I think that's because there's never been an official definition (*), yet aficionados all have their own view about the features that make up an RPG, according to their experience. Like Tim above and other influencers... and many of us.What's so difficult? It's a game. It has action mechanics. It has progression and possibly a story beyond "Narrative 101". We can figure it out neural networks and we cannot tell what kind of game we play?
