Don't know historically accurate or not but the game doesn't allow me to name my female character. Everyone constantly reminded me that I'm a woman so I shouldn't try to do what men do but then listen to my command without any quarrel which was quite immersion breaking.
I see what you mean now. I've restarted as a female and you can't choose your first name, even later - you only have your family name and what they called a nickname.
I think I read something like that, or at least that the first name was always the same if there were several girls, they would be called Julia the younger, Julia the elder and so on (Julia being a very frequent choice). Searching a little bit further confirmed me that there was no way a woman could be part of the army in the Roman civilization - if some were disguised, there is apparently no written account. It seems unlikely.
So the choice of playing male/female feels a little forced. On the one hand it's a historical RPG, and on the other hand they try hard to justify what was not possible back then to please everyone. A character like Lucullus didn't blink when I said I wanted to participate to the battle, for example. From what I read I think that historically, if he had done that, he would have lost the respect of his men.
A few dialogue options allowed me to ask if it was all right for me to fight, but it seemed like they were put there just in case someone needed a justification, and the problem is quickly swept away.
So if anyone wants to play a female character, it's best to take that with a grain of salt, and not to care too much about historical accuracy (and after all, other civilizations had no issue with that).
Something else I hope is addressed in the full game is the party balance. This time I chose a sagittarius (archer), hoping that the later party member (in particular Julius Calidus) would take a complementary role. But no, he remained a sagittarius too, which led to quite the unbalanced party, and much more difficult fights later on.
I also chose another perk (driver for the dialogues like authority/logic/charm) and found different branches with authority than I had with logic, which was nice. It's purely cosmetic so far and the outcome remains the same, but it was a nice touch even if it was just occasional.
