Expeditions: Rome - Demo Released

Why the hell are they supporting an OS whose support expired almost 2 years ago?
I saw the discussion on Discord, I'm not sure how many are impacted by this but it's nice they do something about it. They seemed aware of the problem, and they apparently have Windows 7 available on a test machine. Perhaps it's a minor issue and they're better off fixing it, or they're just very helpful (I believe they are).

I wonder how much Windows 7 is still used today. If I hadn't had to change my PC last year, I would probably still use it, Microsoft hadn't stop providing updates last time I checked.

It's not the first OS to see its life extended even though MS said they would stop any support.

Yeah, but anyone who understands a little about computers (as this game's devs) should simply discourage using an out of date OS.
Windows 7 just doesn't get any security updates any more. (Except for customers buying the extended security updates, which I guess 99.9% of gamers using Windows 7 don't.)

Yes, security update issue is the reason I switched to Win10 even though I liked Win 7 more.

BTW, I thought some of you might like to see some screenies so I attached them here

I wouldn't be so sure about updates, I was receiving regular them a few months ago, long after the so-called end-of-support date (without paying any extra support). It will surely decrease with time and come to a stop, and other software will support it less and less, so I wouldn't risk keeping a PC I need to rely on with an outdated OS. But if it's just for gaming or secondary tasks it's still fine. And it's not up to the game devs to encourage OS migration, their role is to sell their game. :)

Despite being a great version of Windows, Win7 alone has never been secure, you'd need an anti-virus and probably a firewall plus other network protections. Security software like Kaspersky and others are still supporting Windows 7. Which is good, not everyone is willing to pay for a new machine to support all the extra junk that Win10 is running.

And some more screenies

Thanks for the screenies!

Yes, the battles are a little unsettling at first. I wasn't too sure if there was anything to do, like clicking on the icons appearing all over the place for example. It's fine for me though, it's like an animated vignette and not much more (you can go faster by clicking on 'proceed' to get to the next phase). It's beyond the game's pretention to do anything like a strategy game from what I understand.

I wasn't blown away by the "choice and consequence" for the last fight,
the attack on Mytilene. There is an option, and the two outcomes only vary with the initial positions in the city.
Well, it's a change, but I was expecting more, I hope there are more substantial variations in the whole game.

I also spotted this at the top of the screen, since the demo update :-/

It only shows the directions to the few buildings in the camp, but still, I don't like the idea. I'd really like to mask it, as well as the current goal on the top right. Not a big deal though.

Don't know historically accurate or not but the game doesn't allow me to name my female character. Everyone constantly reminded me that I'm a woman so I shouldn't try to do what men do but then listen to my command without any quarrel which was quite immersion breaking.

I see what you mean now. I've restarted as a female and you can't choose your first name, even later - you only have your family name and what they called a nickname.

I think I read something like that, or at least that the first name was always the same if there were several girls, they would be called Julia the younger, Julia the elder and so on (Julia being a very frequent choice). Searching a little bit further confirmed me that there was no way a woman could be part of the army in the Roman civilization - if some were disguised, there is apparently no written account. It seems unlikely.

So the choice of playing male/female feels a little forced. On the one hand it's a historical RPG, and on the other hand they try hard to justify what was not possible back then to please everyone. A character like Lucullus didn't blink when I said I wanted to participate to the battle, for example. From what I read I think that historically, if he had done that, he would have lost the respect of his men.

A few dialogue options allowed me to ask if it was all right for me to fight, but it seemed like they were put there just in case someone needed a justification, and the problem is quickly swept away.

So if anyone wants to play a female character, it's best to take that with a grain of salt, and not to care too much about historical accuracy (and after all, other civilizations had no issue with that).

Something else I hope is addressed in the full game is the party balance. This time I chose a sagittarius (archer), hoping that the later party member (in particular Julius Calidus) would take a complementary role. But no, he remained a sagittarius too, which led to quite the unbalanced party, and much more difficult fights later on.

I also chose another perk (driver for the dialogues like authority/logic/charm) and found different branches with authority than I had with logic, which was nice. It's purely cosmetic so far and the outcome remains the same, but it was a nice touch even if it was just occasional.
