The fixed driver improves performance by up to 5% but on average it's a +1.5% increase so it is fairly negligible.

Lets hope so otherwise it doesn't even seems to match GTX 970 in some reviews :(

The GTX 970 runs faster than a 390X in some games too…

Based on HardwareCanucks and Techpowerups graphes, the RX 480 is on average 5% better than a GTX 970 in DX11 games and 25-30% better in DX12 (basically GTX 980 performance) at 1080p.

I'm much more worried about the card apparently drawing too much power form the PCie bus and consuming more than the GTX 1070, but I've seen other reviews showing total system power draw way lower than the GTX 1070 too. So that part is confusing right now and could be related to the driver issue.

update:
Looks like AMD is looking into the PCie power draw issue after reviewers brought up the issue they were having, the card was passing their internal tests though.

So basically TL;DR, the RX480 is a card for someone who has anything earlier than a GTX970 to get something similar to a GTX970 at around $200-$240.

Yub, pretty much. Apparently also in VR slightly weaker as shown at Pauls Hardwares Video.
And the prices in Germany aren't that nice. Around 270€ for the 8GB version.
For 250€ you can get the cheapest gtx 970 cards.

The RX 480 is cheaper in Canada than the gtx 970 for the base models with the later having instant and mail-in rebates applied. It's strange that it's the opposite in Germany (and basically all of Europe from what I've been reading).

On another subject, PCGamer did (well updated with the RX 480) an aggregate chart and AMD bought a software company: HiAlgo.

Pretty much. It's on average slightly faster than a GTX970. If you wait another 2-4 weeks you can expect partner cards with less noise and another 5% more performance.

As someone building a new system, I am initially disapointed but I think waiting a few weeks to see retests with new drivers us a good idea.
It looks like you have to go crossfire to beat the 1070 and it wont be beating the 1080 anytime soon. I am thinking the 1060 probably comes at about the same price and has same or better results.

Where this card really shines is in DX12 games, so will actually get better with time. If your going 4K then it wouldn't be ideal no.

However running one of these with a 29" Ultrawide 2560x1080 will handle any game currently out there maxed (a bonus if your lcd supports Freesync). A pretty good deal. Hopefully they fix their PCIe power consumption issues though.

It quite probable factory o/c cards and new driver will unlock a few percent more.

Crossfire or SLI is almost always a bad idea. If you know you need the performance it's better to buy one bigger card. The RX480 is made for the mainstream gaming segment. The 3 things which prevent it from being a great offer are (1) the PCIe power problem, (2) it's 5% too slow and (3) 20€ too expensive.
It seems nVidia stopped competing on price this generation. It's completely unclear how they'll position the 1060.

The PCIe issue is starting to get somewhat interesting. AMD said the card passed the independent PCI-SIG testing to get the PCIe certification and Sapphire said that the Nitro RX 480 (that's a factory OCed card) won't need more than 150W to work (but will come with 8-PIN).

Also, HardOCP doesn't have the issue, his RX 480 is at 127.1W under load. Adantech seems to have similar result as well for total system.

That's ~7550w under what people with the issue are reporting.

edit: I fail at math this morning, it's more a 50w difference. Also, the GTX 970 is a 145w card and its consumption is usually similar to the RX 480 in most of the reviews. PCper has nice overtime chart as well.

It's completely unclear how they'll position the 1060.

The current rumors are a base price of $250 USD for 3GB of RAM and $299 for 6GB of RAM (both 192bit bus and probably lower clocked than the RAM in the 1070). The performance is estimated at GTX 970 level.

Well, it looks like I'll get the 1080 I guess, I was expecting a bit more from AMD.

If it's price will be $300, I don't see anyone buying GTX 1060.
RX480 according to tests can't "dethrone" GTX 970. Those buying a new card soon, with $50 less price on AMD's side, shouldn't wait for GTX 1060. Basically those who's pocket is not deep enough for GTX 1070/1080 would be crazy to buy GTX 1060 with RX480 around.

GG what will you use 1080 with?
I bet Star Wars: Battlefront, FIFA 17 and Titanfall 2. :p

If it wasn't at such a premium and supported Freesync i'd consider the 1080, but right nowI think it's still worth it to wait to see what AMD puts out for the high end in the next couple months.

Also, i'm not sure I can justify the $500 price/performance premium just to run hairworks. Is it really that worth it?

I find it a bit strange that you compare the equivalent to a Mercedes C-Class to the equivalent of a Porsche 911. Different market segment and different price.
