Pillars of Eternity II - Update #12

Yeah, the way I prefer is to have (all) characters just speak the first line or two so that you can get a sense of what they sound like. Then just be quiet!

"As far as where the relationships can lead, companions may develop strong feelings of camaraderie, loyalty, loathing, fear, contempt, or even love."

Unless they mean the platonic kind, "love" usually indicates romance.
Yes, of course. I was actually referring to the term romance which alone would increase controversial discussions by itself.

Exactly. And to get a sense of how they sound like in the specific situation. Voice can transport a lot of emotion easily.

I hope they've learned to convey lore to the player in a proper way and write engaging rulesets. Third time's a charm.

4 males, 3 females for 7 companions right now …

Looks like I'll be skipping this one friends... can't play a game that's full of misoguny and sexism.

Am I the only one that feels that the amount of companions is disappointingly low? Is that the final (base) number (excluding one or two that might get added through stretch goals)?

Bah, I want to travel with a party of plate bikini females! They should allow us to create our own travel companions.

They want to put more depth into the companions, so yes this is the final amount.

Like in the first game, you will be able to make your own party members. They just won't have any personality.

I thought they had too many companions in PoE. Fewer but better developed companions is preferable.

Yeah, I tend to agree with wiretripped :) I like BG I style companions (preferably with greater reactivity) Generally the more party configuration and banter options, the better. I'm not expecting BG2 levels of companion interaction, but who knows if 3 million is reached? (Currently at 2.73 mil with 8 days left as I write..)

I outlined some of my thoughts on what I'd like to see with companions in PoE II in my White March part one report: https://www.rpgwatch.com/forums/showthread.php?t=30760

Nope, I feel this way, too. But this is a problem in most party-based RPGs like this now. Most people seem to prefer less quantity and gameplay options when it comes to companions and they want more fleshed out story companions instead. Those of us who want more companions to create unique, creative party compositions or different party options in general are the minority, thus developers just don't do it.

Hopefully more party-based RPGs come out that try this approach a bit more.

You know, I want a greater number of NPCs to allow great mix of characters too. I know some of you want well written characters as in "deep meaningful characters" but I want to see some light hearted, silly ones like Minsc. Just a group of NPCs I feel close to as a friend. I'm really sick of dry, politically correct human relationship you experience at work everyday.

I get what they're going for, but eh, being a "spiritual successor" to BG I feel like that is the sweet spot they should be aiming for. BG companions still had quests, had banter and interaction with each other, though yes, they were not as fleshed out as PoE companions, but that was fine honestly.
The greater variety in BG actually meant more replayability, as you'd run through the game with various party compositions (as Fluent mentioned). In PoE, if I want a mage, I am stuck with Aloth (god, I hate Aloth).

Like in the first game, you will be able to make your own party members. They just won't have any personality.

Oh, they did? I seem to have missed that... You mean the adventurers you hire in the inns? I never tried that, actually.

It is going to get significantly more than 3 million just assuming the current rate maintains, but it is fairly likely to get an upswing in the last couple of days. It is tracking better than WL3 at this point and WL3 ended up with 3.1 mil.

You definitely should try that wiretripped - it's very convenient until you can get the desired party you want. For instance, I've made a level 2 rogue in at least two of my parties, as they are certainly the melee powerhouses of the game.

Not sure if it's already been posted, but here's a relatively new twitch video featuring Josh Sawyer and Carrie Patel answering fan questions:

Thanks for the tip.
I'm actually in the middle of a PoE run, but I kind of ran out of steam. The combat is... off-putting. I really hope they improve that for PoE 2.

You'll need to pay up for extra companions. Ever heard of stretch-goals? :) It's the latest in commercial blackmail.

Interesting - the next stretch goal introduces 'sidekicks' …more or less the old BG style less-fleshed-out characters who can join you party (?)

Nice. I hope they end up adding more than 4, though. I'm greedy when it comes to designing my party and having a bunch of options for different party combinations.
