I almost never post on the forums, but I have to sing the praises of Helherron.
This game blew me away when I first played it more than 10 years ago, and it's still my favorite dungeon crawler of all time. Anything else I play I compare to Helherron and only KotC really competes. The graphics, interface and everything else are extremely retro (8-bit), but what I said still stands.
numerous disclaimers:
--> keyboard-only interface is a bit time consuming and you have to read/learn the plentiful shortcuts
--> combat is *punishing*
--> if you've never played, party composition is SUPER important. You don't get to swap anyone out later. Want to try out an Orc Priest? Don't.
--> combat can be even more punishing if your magic users get gimped on their randomly provided spells (you find books of new spells in-game though)
--> you're going to have to learn to play it. If you just kind of stumble around and see what happens, what happens is death.
Still on the fence? This game is FREE, always has been.
Happy to answer questions if anyone is interested.
