HoMM Inline Update
Over the weekend since I handed this in, three changes. Mainly, I made it to level 70+ so I was able to try the PvP portion of the online version. For-pay portions of the game were launched. And I got well into "Chapter Four" of the quests (250 out of 700+ completed) so I could finally see where the quests were going. Turns out they were going nowhere.
If you are an RPGer, like me, sadly you will become disappointed in HoMM Online after a while. It is quite fun for a while because you are expecting something like the original missions to evolve. The lack of any goal or continuity just reduces the quests to a looooooooong series of grinds after 250+ quests. The game is based on one concept — grind through hundred of missions to pimp out your toon for the real goal, PvP.
At chapter 4 quests continue to be same old same old — and all too easy. With the exception of one particular mob (elven archers who get the first shot) you can go through most quests with zero losses, even on autoplay. For an RPGer, version 37 of the same quest to kill 60 armies of seven stacks each, losing perhaps a quarter of one stack, gets old. (BTW, in fairness PvPers seem to
enjoy the grinding!)
The initial enjoyment of the missions is based on the anticipation that something like the original HoMM 1-4 missions are going to evolve. It never does. Just grind, grind, grind. There are special equipment bonuses for repeating the same mission three, six, and nine times— all designed to get you the best equipment for PvP.
They also launched the pay-for portions of the game the day after I handed in the article to RPGwatch. Wow — I admit to be a noob in for-free games, but this one is expensive to play! The "Dragon Soul" I mentioned that is needed to make your equipment upgrades permanent costs about 13 $US each! Upgrading a spell one level costs a couple bucks. Lotteries and equipment beckon for your "Erathium" I have got to believe that a serious PvPer will spend well over EQ/WoW/LotR/Etc. monthly fees.
PvP was comical. The game says you will be pitted against someone of "equal level."
- Try One — My level 71 toon with 7 stacks of 65 monks enters bravely. Opponent is an level 110 with stacks of 300+. He casts some high level spell (I think death ripple, but it happened so fast i am not sure!) and one-rounds my entire army!!
- Try two — no one shows! I win! Woot, me!
- Try three — L95 barbarian. I do much better. I killed half a stack before I wiped.
- Pass four — Wow! An equal level 71! I have a chance!! Not! He was much better at equipping his hero (attack and defense stats both over 200 while mine were around 80 each). I somehow managed to kill three of his stacks before wiping.
Oh well. I am so bad at PvP!

On the positive side, if you like HoMM
and PvP, I suspect you will really enjoy HoMM Online.
Hi Angelspit— aye, back from the dead. The impact of 911 knocked me onto a very different track for a frew years
Dhruin — nope, still very fractured English.
Wahwah — thanks, all reviews I have done are only after significant time, usually a complete play-through
