Game of the Year Awards 2019 - Most Promising RPG
Here are the games our readers and editors look forward to most.
Gamers' Choice and Editors' Third Place: Cyberpunk 2077
Cyberpunk 2077 Was also the most anticipated game in 2018. So its no surprise that many gamers still have high expectations for Cyberpunk 2077 when it will hopefully be be released in 2020. Based on the Cyberpunk tabletop game, the game takes place in a dark future where megacorporations control the world and the masses are intoxicated by virtual entertainment.
This offers new opportunies for CD project's narrative talent, and seems to fit in well with their strengths. We hope Cyberpunk 2077 is able to live up to both the hype and its potential.
Gamers' Runner Up And Editors' Choice: Vampire - The Masquerade: Bloodlines 2
Despite being released as a buggy mess and sealing the fate of the developer Troika, the original Vampire- The Masquerade: Bloodlines, fully patched and with community material is considered a cult classic and a one of the greatest rpgs of all time. The game offered a number of ways to finish quests dependent of the characters skills and vampire clans, and it included well designed characters, places, and quests. The game's haunted house quest is at least for me one of the most memorable in any game I've played.
It will be very hard for the developers to live up to such an excellent predecessor, but we are hoping that Bloodlines 2 will be a worthy successor, and so far what we have seen looks promising.
Editors' Runner Up: Realms Beyond
Relams Beyond: Ashes of the Fallen is using the D&D 3.5 OGL license and lists games such as the Gold-Box and Ultima sries as a reference for developing the game. It offers turn-based combat, with a party of 6. It offers a world you can interact with and which responds to your actions. And it does all that in a world with creatures and races we know from previous D&D experiences. The game is to be released in parts, where each part is big enough to be a game on its own. Looking at the map that was recently released, it looks like the game with all chapters is bound to be enormous.
It was scheduled to go into Early Access on Steam late 2019, but that has been delayed
Gamers' Third Place: Wasteland 3
Wasteland 3 was runner up for the most anticipated Game of the Year in 2018. At that time we figured it would be released last year, but that did not happen. The hopes of our visitors remain that it will be a game that can live up or even surpass its predecessor. Set in the post-apocalyptic American west, a small group of rangers tries to police the irradiated wastes. Its your job to try to protect resurging civilization from bandits, mutants, and other threats. We are looking forward to what post-apocalyptic Colorado has to offer
