- Funcom and Cabinet Group LLC establishes HEROIC SIGNATURES, a joint venture that will manage the interactive rights to rich worlds and characters -
- These properties will be available for other developers to license, as part of Funcom's increased focus on co-development and publishing partnerships -
OSLO, Norway - December 18th, 2017 - Game developer and publisher Funcom is excited to announce that it is teaming up with Cabinet Group LLC to establish HEROIC SIGNATURES, a new company that will hold and manage the interactive rights to numerous attractive intellectual properties from the writings of Robert E Howard and the Swedish original pen & paper and board games. These properties include Conan the Barbarian, Solomon Kane, and Mutant Chronicles, all of which have been made popular through motion pictures, comic books, novels, tabletop games, miniatures, and more. Other properties include Dark Agnes, Kult, Kull of Atlantis, Mutant: Year Zero, and El Borak. HEROIC SIGNATURES' portfolio includes a total of 29 different intellectual properties making up several decades worth of rich worlds and characters.
"Heroic Signatures is now the guardian and caretaker of a veritable treasure chest of incredible worlds, each of them ready to be brought into the interactive space," said Funcom CEO, Rui Casais. "Any developer or publisher will be able to license these properties, and our ambition is to see a multitude of games grow from these worlds and to see the properties strengthened across the board to the benefit of everyone who works with them."
Cabinet Group LLC controls the overall rights to all properties. Funcom and Cabinet Group LLC will each own 50% of HEROIC SIGNATURES, which will control and manage the interactive rights to each property, i.e. the right for video gaming on all platforms.
Funcom will utilize these properties, in addition to the Company's internal properties, as part of an increased focus on co-development and publishing partnerships with third party developers. Funcom has previously shared that it will be going into select publishing partnerships with developers, and these partnerships are intended to be targeted to leverage the core strengths and markets of Funcom, with focus on quality over quantity of projects. The first of these projects developed by a third party and published by Funcom, will be revealed next year.
To fund publishing partnerships with third party developers, and secondarily to have more flexibility in investing in production of new games internally, Funcom has secured a 10.6 million USD investment from SwedBank Robur Fonder AB which has previously invested in several other major game developers and publishers.
"We see this as a new giant leap in Funcom's turnaround," says Erik Sprinchorn, fund manager at SwedBank Robur Fonder. "Building on its impressive recent development, multiple new revenue sources from IP and strategic expansion into publishing will increase cash flow robustness and boost further growth. Combined with additional funding and a reverse split the company is now really well positioned as an attractive long-term investment."

Conan Exiles - Early Access Jan 31st 2017
@Gamebanshee Conan Exiles early access date has been announced as January 31st 2017. Funcom has released a video to show off gameplay.
Very soon gamers on both PC and Xbox One will get to journey to that very age in Funcom’s upcoming open-world survival game ‘Conan Exiles’. Starting January 31st 2017, players on PC will get to unleash their inner barbarian in Early Access. Soon after, Xbox One players too can jump into the fray as ‘Conan Exiles’ hits the Xbox One Game Preview program in the spring same year. Inspired by the great Robert E. Howard stories, ‘Conan Exiles’ will have players fighting to survive, build, and dominate their enemies in a vast and treacherous open-world in both single- and multiplayer.
To celebrate today’s announcement, Funcom is releasing a brand new trailer showing how the game looks in action. This is the first ‘Conan Exiles’ video released in almost six months and shows the results of the hard work the developers have put into both graphics and gameplay since June.
“The open-world survival genre is ripe for Conan’s conquest,” says Game Director Joel Bylos. “If there ever was a world that can truly test your strength and skill, it is the brutal and savage world of Conan the Barbarian. ‘Conan Exiles’ is not just an empty sandbox, it is a world rich in history where you must discover the secrets of ancient civilizations as you struggle to build your own.”loading...

- Brand new trailer showing pre-alpha gameplay now available, new screenshots -Oslo, Norway - June 9th, 2016 - Funcom, the independent developer and publisher of computer and console games, today announced that the company's open-world survival game ‘Conan Exiles' will enter into Early Access on September 13th, 2016. The company cut the ribbon to the official Steam page today, where Early Access will kick off, with full launch on PC and consoles to follow. The company also released the first ever trailer featuring pre-alpha gameplay footage, finally giving fans a glimpse at how the game looks in motion. The video is available in eight different languages.
"We're very excited (and a bit nervous) about launching our first Early Access title," said Funcom CEO Rui Casais. "The team wants to give the players the best possible experience, and while we are used to working on a game for several years before letting players in, this time around we will let players in just nine months after development started! As with any Early Access games, some features and content will be more finalized than others, and players will be able to help us focus on what's important to them so that we can improve the game and flesh out content and systems before full launch."
‘Conan Exiles' will first become available as an Early Access title, meaning certain content and features will be more complete than others when first available. Over time Funcom will work with the community and players and focus on what is important to them when deciding what to improve, what new mechanics and content to add. Players can expect the game to improve significantly over the course of the Early Access period, on everything from graphics to content and systems.

Funcom - CFO Resigns
CFO resigns, as losses rise, according the The Edge.
Norwegian MMO developer Funcom reported a $22.8 million impairment charge during its fiscal Q4 ended in December, due to lower-than-expected revenues of Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures.
Funcom said in a Monday statement that it continues to "invest heavily" in Age of Conan, which released in May of 2008, as 120 employees (not including customer service) continue work on the game.
The number of Age of Conan subscribers declined during the quarter, although Funcom said the subscriber base has been "relatively stable" in 2009, which is believed to be a result from improvements to the game implemented last year.
The developer continues to market the game in new territories, and aims to "revitalize" interest in the core markets as well.
Operating loss for the quarter totaled $23.4 million, compared to the comparable quarter a year ago, which saw losses of $2.8 million. The impairment charges related to Age of Conan were the main driver.
The company reported $40 million in cash as of December 31, 2008.

Funcom - The Secret World
Funcom has announced a new MMO entitled The Secret World which they have been developing for the Xbox 360 and PC.
Durham, USA – May 11th, 2007 – From the creators of ‘Age of Conan’, ‘Anarchy Online’, ‘The Longest Journey’ and 'Dreamfall' comes a brave new massively multiplayer online role–playing game for the PC and Xbox 360. Taking place on our earth, in our times, ‘The Secret World’ (TSW) is inspired by history and mythology, modern conspiracy theories and ancient mysteries.
For there really is a world within ours, a secret world, where magic exists, monsters roam and ancient forces are fighting for the dominance of earth. It is a world of legendary stories, ageless conflicts and powerful cabals. In this world, even modern cities hide secrets. In this world, players can take part in the greatest conspiracies of our age, and battle the forces of darkness across the world and throughout time.
“We started envisioning this contemporary online world more than ten years ago, and as the years passed the ideas grew and improved,“ said Ragnar Tørnquist, Producer and Director on ‘The Secret World’. “We always wanted a different kind of online world, something scary and contemporary, something deeper and closer to our reality. Our goal now is to create a detailed world where players feel empowered and part of something big, something mystical and epic.”
“We believe there are millions of gamers out there who want to explore something beyond traditional fantasy and sci-fi games,“ said Trond Arne Aas, CEO of Funcom. “'The Secret World' is just that – a fantastic new setting that will fuel the imagination of online gamers, and keep players busy for years. We have a golden opportunity to bring something fresh and exciting to the genre, and we firmly believe the game is an ideal extension of Funcom’s MMO portfolio.”
‘The Secret World’ has been in development since last summer and the game is in a playable state. It is produced at the Funcom studios in Oslo and Beijing. A release date is not being announced at this point, but players are already getting involved in the fast-growing community. Through a complex web-based mystery launched on May 6th, players are being led to a series of websites, including www.DarkDaysAreComing.com, where – after solving a puzzle – concept art from the game is being unveiled.
As a gamer you can become a member of the first wave community, and through pioneer forums you can discuss and explore the intriguing backstory. To access the forums and learn more about the mystery make sure you check out: www.darkdemonscrygaia.com

Funcom - New MMO Revealed
Well...sort of revealed. FiringSquad has the news that Funcom has signalled they have a new MMO in development. It's a short piece, so here's the whole thing:
During the demo for their MMORPG Age Of Conan, Funcom project director Jorgen Tharaldsen informed the press group that the company is already deep in development of yet another MMO project for the PC and Xbox 360 platforms. The game is actually being shown to publishers at GDC (although not to the press). The game is using the same graphics engine as Age of Conan and Tharaldsen told us that the unnamed title takes place on Earth in the present day, making the game one of the first, if not the first, MMO project that uses a real world present time setting. We hope to get more info on the title in the months ahead.
