A Farewell to Dragons - Review @ SquareGo

by Magerette, 17:49

Reviews for A Farewell to Dragons are still rather scarce, but SquareGo adds one to the list with an over-all score of 3/5:

As with most Action RPGs A Farewell to Dragons focuses on combat and this is unfortunately where the game suffers.  Fights boil down to doing damage to an enemy and healing comrades.  There is little variety in the battles and even after playing for a considerable number of hours it can feel unintuitive when choosing targets for spells...

Overall A Farewell to Dragons is a nice, story based adventure which suffers from a lack of ambition in the fun aspect of the game.  Whilst the exceptionally interesting world and fascinating plot help drive the experience forwards, the badly designed combat system slows you down too often for this to be remembered as a classic.

A Farewell to Dragons - Review @ gameSlave

by Dhruin, 20:00

gameSlave has a new review for A Farewell to Dragons that carries the pretty ordinary score of 5/10.  There's not a huge amount of detail beyond the graphics and bad VO but here's a snip:

The game is pretty much a rip off of every point n' click RPG which has come before it. You have to assemble your team of witty outcasts and move from place to place, looting, killing and pillaging as you go.

While there is an aspect of morality it's pretty underplayed, with most of your decisions having little or no effect on the outcome of your journey. There is the occasional decision which can come back to haunt/help you - leave the bandit alive and he might come to your rescue later, for example - but for the most part it's just killing your way one location after another.

A Farewell to Dragons - UK Retail Release Dated

by Dhruin, 19:51

Excalibur sent out a PR announcing they will be bringing A Farewell to Dragons to UK retail on February 26th.  No word on whether there are any changes from the current digital release at Steam and the like:

Excalibur Publishing Ltd. keen to release new sci-fi fantasy RPG to the UK market

Excalibur Publishing Ltd is set to release classic action role-playing game ‘A Farewell to Dragons’ in the UK. As of February 2010 you will be able to follow Victor’s story and have hand in his fate.

Midworld, created in a Russian fantasy book by authors Sergey Lukyanenko and Nikolay Perumov, set the scene for the game and Victor is it’s hero. He is an ordinary doctor who finds himself in Midworld after being attacked and losing consciousness. This is where the player comes in. After a series of initiations you will master the power and the magic of the four elements, having learned how to use them to your advantage.

Guided by the sorceress Telle you will make new friends and come across numerous enemies who you must destroy. You will explore this mysterious world where anything can happen and pass numerous initiations in order to proceed. Your final destination is the faraway Outer World Castle in which you will be put through your last test and seal the fate of Middle World.

Robert Stallibrass of Excalibur Publishing says: “In collaborating with 1C, the leading Eastern and Central European games publisher and developer, we have been given a great opportunity to bring an epic dragon-slaying adventure to the UK market. We are looking forward to the gamer’s responses as we really enjoy this adventure.”

The product will retail at £24.99, is available on pre-order at www.excalibur-publishing.com and will officially hit the shelves in all major game retailers on 26 February 2010.

RPGWatch Feature - A Farewell to Dragons Review

by Dhruin, 22:49

Steam's current sale makes A Farewell to Dragons a tantalising prospect, so we have a comprehensive review just in time.  Not quite an action/rpg, not quite living up to the old school cRPGs it attempts to emulate, A Farewell to Dragons is a game full of good ideas lost in unsuccessful execution.  Here's an excerpt:

AFTD takes up Arcanum’s mantle of steampunk with a vivid and nicely imagined 19th century-style setting full of period locomotives and gunslinging bandits leavened with colleges of arcane magic wielders and wild clans of catwomen. Dwarves are - as usual - the masters of technology, and in this incarnation rather than being ponderous, they’re agile and nimble scientists as well as miners or smiths. Dwarven gearmasters will provide your party with a large array of potent WMDs, including explosives, poisons, flamethrowers, machine guns, muskets, rifles, pistols, and chain saws, including one entitled The Blood-Stained Maniac Saw. Not everyone can master these weapons, however, and not every NPC fits the bill. Victor is unique in the game in having a variety of skill paths, able to be master of all four elemental magics, a fighter, gunslinger,  or any hybrid of the three.

by Myrthos, 08:58

We used to have this game in our database as Not the Time for Dragons but it went of the radar. Leth informed us that this steampunk party based RPG is going to be released tomorrow through GamersGate. There is however little we know about it at this time as all the news we have is about screens.

Not the Time for Dragons - Screens @ Strategy Informer

by Dhruin, 00:47

Strategy Informer has 16 screens from No Time For Dragons, which turns out to be the action/RPG we have in our database as Not The Time For Dragons.  We have at least half a dozen newsbits about screens at Russian site CRPG.ru, so these may not be new, but the fact that these come via UK publisher 505 Games is news to us.

505 Games lists "2008" for the release date.
