APB - Preview @ Eurogamer

by Woges, 15:02

There's a write-up of a viewing of APB at PAX on Eurogamer that gives several details of the games technical abilities.

Speaking to me afterwards, Chris Collins admits the game won't have the verticality of Crackdown, Realtime's Xbox 360 side project of a few years back, but says it matches and betters other contemporary open-world standards. There's evident variety in vehicle handling, armour levels and speeds, adding a bit of dynamism to car chases when battles go mobile, and combat situations are full of players crouching behind cover and clambering over the surrounding level furniture for a superior vantage point, all while a handsome day-and-night cycle (about eight real hours for a full one) bathes the reasonable draw distance of San Paro's waterfront district in a procession of dusky hues.

But it's the fact of the other players that distinguishes APB. They aren't just working through the content like you are; they are the content. They're responsible for the enormous variety of outfits and vehicles, their actions have unlocked the diversified weaponry that characterises your mission-based combat, and thanks to some cunning VOIP software, their real voices will fill the air between gunshots if you're within a logical radius. Even their taste in music determines the game's atmosphere: thanks to last.fm technology, a gangbanger cruising by in his SUV fills the air with hip hop; he may be listening to Dr. Dre, but you might hear NWA if last.fm's matchmaking tech decides that's the closest equivalent on your hard disk. When you die, you hear death music they wrote in the music creator.

APB - Updated Impressions @ Gamespot

by Woges, 13:39

Guy Cocker writes up a showing of APB.

Long shrouded in secrecy, APB has recently been making appearances everywhere, from high-profile events like E3 to smaller industry conferences such as Brighton Develop. The game is reaching its final stages of development, and developer Realtime Worlds celebrated that fact with the first live demo today at Gamescom in Cologne. A hugely ambitious project, APB is an online, massively multiplayer open world action game that pits the law-makers against the law-breakers in a huge urban war.

The Gamescom demo focussed on the enforcer team, whose job it is to keep the peace in the world of APB. The demo started with a short introduction to the world, with two people playing the game locally joining forces with people in remote locations. They all got into a police car--one of the 30 vehicles that will feature in the game. EJ Moreland, the lead designer, highlighted how the bodykits for the cars will be completely customisable, allowing law enforcement to be just as fashionable as the tattooed criminals we've seen in videos to date.

APB - Beta Registration

by Woges, 20:31

Eurogamer brings to light that the beta reg is open for APB.

Realtime Worlds has opened up applications to take part in the beta test of its hotly anticipated crime MMO, APB.

It's no guarantee of access, naturally, and there's still no word on when the beta might start, although Realtime estimated August when we spoke to them at E3 in June.

APB - Goes Free?

by Dhruin, 13:29

Evil Avatar has noticed an update to the All Points Bulletin FAQ that suggests some form of free model:

How much will APB cost?

The actual price for the game itself is still under discussion but we’ll keep you up to date. We can confirm that APB will not require a monthly subscription.

APB - Dave Jones @ Brighton Develop Conference

by Woges, 13:09

Dave Jones talks about APB and the reasons to go online: article at Gamespot.

Some of the most interesting customisation in APB looks to come from the audio side. Jones confirmed the integration of music-streaming service Last.fm (which is owned by GameSpot's parent company CBS) for the game, so when you link your APB account to the service, you will be able to play your favourite music in the game. There's also a simple music composition tool included in the game, and Jones showed how you will be able to compose 'Another One Bites the Dust' or the theme from Super Mario. You will then be able to play this whenever you kill someone in the game. "You could become the Mario assassin," joked Jones.

On the technical side, Jones said that his new favourite piece of technology was the server that APB will run from. "There will be no lobbies in our game," said Jones. "There will be asymmetrical matchmaking, looking at your skill level and bringing in lots of players or just two depending on the situation. APB will also be a truly persistent world--GTA and Crackdown were not." He then showed how the game world is alive even when you're not on the server, with AI cars and people going about their business in the city.

Platforms and online:

He also talked about looking at developing for other platforms. "We looked at Wii, and it's great for Nintendo, but I like to make games that I play and so does our team," said Jones. "iPhone is also interesting, but I think it's for the up and coming guys--a great one for students to cut their teeth in."

Eventually, the team settled on an online, next-gen game. "Next gen is still the dollar leader," he claims, "and online has huge scope for innovation. If you look at Gears of War and Halo then you see [online] is truly where players spend their time." There are also selfish reasons, he admits. "Client piracy is not an issue, and the economics are more favourable to developers."

APB - Enforcers & Criminals

by Myrthos, 12:09

MMORPG has made an editorial about the enforcers and criminals in APB.

Law and Order is on the brink of collapse in the famous metropolis of San Paro, the major city of All Points Bulletin (APB). But before you start playing one must first choose your allegiance with the city. Will you be there to protect the city from becoming corrupt, or have a hand in its criminal uprising?

While creating a character in APB, the user must choose their faction from either an Enforcer or a Criminal. Once this faction is chosen, the player will not be able to switch sides to the opposing faction. Since APB is not going for the original MMO feel there will be no leveling. Characters will only progress by enhancing their own gaming skills forcing players to build reputations within the gaming world. This will lead to unlocking clothes, items, cars, and of course more powerful guns. Also, by forcing the players to build a reputation, the game will feel like it's a more persistent world. Both factions Enforcers/Criminals have missions that will help them build a reputation in addition to the fight against one another. Once players build a high enough reputation they will be able to create there very own squads or gangs, complete with there own tattoos, clothes, colors, and the ability to fight for control of turf in the city.

APB - Leading The Design of @ Gamasutra

by Woges, 20:23

Lead designer EJ Moreland interviewed by Christian Nutt.

The concept behind much-anticipated PC online game All Points Bulletin (APB) is more accretive in nature, taking in action games, console and PC innovations, and coming up with its own solutions to gameplay questions.

Here, he talks about the process, the dangers and opportunites in creating an contemporary urban online game outside the typical MMO territory, and working with Dave Jones, the Grand Theft Auto creator who has talked passionately to Gamasutra about the opportunities online gaming offers on multiple occasions.

The interview, conducted at this month's E3 Expo in Los Angeles, is essential reading for those who would consider breaking the rather staid boundaries of the MMO genre, and also provides a window into the design process for developers who have spent their time working on very disparate genres until this point -- and now are trying to marry them.

APB - John Walker on

by Woges, 18:17

RPS's John Walker has penned a lenthy preview of Realtime Worlds' E3 showing of APB.

Of everything I saw at E3, APB stood out as the project with the greatest concentration of inspiration. Ignore the surprisingly crappy images that have been released so far - this one deserves your attention. During the presentation a colleague sat next to me leant in and said, “Bloody hell.” A minute or so later I replied, “This is the first original idea I’ve seen all week.” It’s very easy to think of APB as an online GTA. It certainly is a game focused around either committing or preventing crimes in an open city. But what makes APB stand out is just how damned smart it is.

APB - Preview @ 1up

by Woges, 16:52

1up have a look at APB at E3.

What's the game about? Calling APB "online multiplayer cops and robbers" might be selling it a bit short. It's more like "massively multiplayer cops, bounty hunters, SWAT teams, car thieves, arsonists, murderers and robbers who all moonlight as fashion designers, auto detailers, and tattoo artists." Blinging yourself out, drawing flaming skulls on your car, and just generally making yourself look distinctly, individually badass seems like it'll be as much fun as capping a bunch of guys for messing with your turf. APB is looking more and more like Spore for asskickers, except with, you know, an actual game in there.

APB - Closed Beta

by Woges, 12:41

Final phase of internal testing since mid september, facebook intergration and a new logo for getting the rights back. So say Develop.

In the firm's latest mailout to fans, Realtime Worlds has revealed that its new MMO APB will use Facebook as a 'major community tool'.

The game, which was unveiled at GDC, is a multiplayer game in the GTA mould, but offers players the chance to take on either the role of cops or robbers.

It's not yet known how exactly Facebook will integrate with the game, but when revealed the game at GDC Realtime Worlds head Dave Jones said the game would be using social music site Last.fm for in-game audio content, proving that the studio is keen to embrace already popular and established online services when building its game - rather than build its own.

APB - Using PhysX

by Woges, 16:53

Dave Jones announces Nvidia's PhysX for APB.

"APB is a vastly ambitious project, combining the key elements of action gameplay in a living, breathing world with millions of players around the globe. In order to fully realise the vision of APB, it was essential to include next-generation physics in our game world. This is why we choose to standardise our development on GeForce GPUs and NVIDIA PhysX technology, the combination of which has given our developers the power and freedom to deliver the first action and physics based combat gameplay into the massively multiplayer online space."

APB - Looming

by Woges, 22:12

Sooner than you think says Realtime Worlds' Colin Macdonald.

Speaking to videogaming247 at the Develop Online conference today, Realtime Worlds' Colin Macdonald revealed that the Crackdown developer is making another game alongside crime MMO All Ponts Bulletin.

"We've got a couple of projects on the go, but in terms of our next-to-market, it's APB," he said.

He also revealed that the PC and 360 MMO might get to market sooner than you'd think. "We're not that far away," he said. "Things have been going really, really well. But it's a mammoth game: what's still to be done isn't going to be done overnight."

Macdonald also promised news on the APB beta test before too long, and said that going it alone with APB and not having a boxed product - as CCP has done with EVE Online - would be "risky".

APB - Realtime Worlds gives $1,000 to Fansite

by Woges, 12:51

Fansite gifted cash to help with increased traffic. Spotted at Develop.

In a post on APB-Evolved.com, Realtime Worlds' community relations manager Chris Dye wrote: "Realtime Worlds feels you should all be able to focus your efforts on continuing to build and run this awesome site which we hope will 'evolve' alongside the game.

"As such, we would like to donate the $1000 required to secure the hosting of this site for the next 12 months and beyond. You have also offered a great place for new fans of the game to come and not only share their ideas and learn more about the game from yourselves, but have provided them with a friendly supportive group in which to do this."

APB - Impressive Character Gen Video

by Woges, 01:27

Kieron Gillen raves about the first video (that I've seen) of APB's character generation capabilities. Rave at RPS video from GameVideos.

What the video shows is that the world of APB is going to be exactly like GTA at its best, magnified by a mass of human mind’s imagination. Sure, there’s going to hyperdefined poseurs - but, put in the context of people dressed only in their awesome underwear, the universe is going to feel surprising every time you turn a corner. Anyone trying to be cool is entirely undermined, which - of course - probably makes the game even cooler, y’know?

I’m a big fan of completely meaningless customisation in games. Sure, proper feedback from your decisions is a great thing too - but completely surface level changes can be deeply compelling, especially in a world where you get to show off these meaningless decisions.

Looks like APB is set to go more public as Realtime Worlds hires CRM.

Realtime Worlds today announced that Chris ‘Ulric’ Dye has joined their team as Community Relations Manager for the highly anticipated MMO APB (www.apb.com).

Chris will begin the process of building the already growing community interest around APB through various channels including, but not limited to, fan sites, community forums and social networking sites.

“APB is at an extremely exciting and important stage, and we can now begin the process of introducing to the gaming community the various aspects of what will make up this genre defining MMO”, commented Chris.

APB - Interview @ Warcry

by Woges, 20:36

I've just included this game into the database so here is a slighty older than normal news post to start off the games coverage.

In the past week, Realtime Worlds (RTW) has announced that it secured $50 million in financing and reacquired all rights to All Points Bulletin (APB), their upcoming cops-and-robbers MMO. The brainchild of CEO David Jones - best known as the creator of Grand Theft Auto - this game promises to bring open-world, urban mayhem to a massive scale, but since its announcement in 2005, RTW has been extremely tight lipped. WarCry had the chance to speak to Senior Vice President of Business Development Walter Kong about Realtime Worlds and their upcoming flagship title, APB.
