Death's Door - Review @ RPGFan

by Hiddenx, 18:40

RPGFan checked out the Adventure-RPG Death's Door:

Review

We continue to live in a long, arguably golden age of retro-inspired games with modern twists. Death’s Door is an example of that, with clear homages to classic 2D Zelda titles mixed with its own extremely unique audiovisual flair. This results in a title with mostly familiar and simple gameplay mechanics repackaged in a way that makes it more memorable than most, though still falling short in some areas.

Death’s Door begins in the Reaping Commission Headquarters, which has a neat aesthetic that reminds me of Chrono Trigger’s End of Time. The player, a crow working as a reaper, is assigned the task of reaping a soul from a being that’s lived past its expiration date—which incidentally causes them to become a formidable monster. You begin what should be a routine mission; however, it quickly goes south when the soul from the vanquished beast is stolen by a haggard looking crow and secreted away to the Lost Cemetery, the game’s main hub. What’s worse, failure to retrieve the soul will lead to entrapment and eventual death for our hero.

Overall, Death’s Door is an enjoyable homage to 2D Zelda games with some additional quirky flair thrown in. It is a satisfying experience whose main drawback is its overall safeness, plus a lack of replayability. Some may also be turned off by the lack of extreme difficulty, which can be another source of replay value for many similar games. I would recommend Death’s Door to those looking for a nostalgia fix that won’t try your patience or just want to enjoy a memorable and contemplative audiovisual style.

Death's Door - Review @ Kotaku

by Hiddenx, 17:30

Kotaku checked out the RPG Death's Door:

Death’s Door Is As Good As Everyone Says

The Legend of Zelda-like is dungeon-crawling without the baggage

Within five minutes of starting Death’s Door I knew I was going to love it. The combat was basic but weighty. The visual presentation was sparse but bespoke. Its music, sometimes pastoral and serene, sometimes grim and despairing, made no secret that something special was going on, and my love for the indie action-RPG only continues to grow.

Currently out on PC and Xbox, people have been raving about Death’s Door and they are right to do so. There’s nothing shocking about its story or mechanics. What’s shocking is just how good it is at everything it does. The attention-to-detail is striking: for example, when you chop a wooden sign in half and then try to read it, the top part of the text will be missing. I loathe completionism in games, but this is one where after 10 hours I still want to hunt down every weird side collectible and story secret.

In Death’s Door, you play as a crow who’s part of a grim reaper bureaucracy tasked with collecting the souls of those passing on to the afterlife. There’s a conspiracy afoot, however. Soon, like X-Files’ agent Moulder, you’re off investigating witches’ mansions and swamp castles, trying to find missing comrades and capture powerful souls to uncover the truth behind the afterlife. The rest unfolds like a classic 2D Zelda that’s been stripped down and polished so that only the essentials are left—and they gleem so much, they’re practically glowing.

Death's Door - Review @ Screenrant

Screenrant checked out Death's Door:

Death’s Door Review: A Gorgeous Action RPG About Death

Death's Door is a gorgeous and responsive action-adventure with a best-in-class soundtrack, and an easy recommendation

For the diminutive crow at the center of Acid Nerve’s Death’s Door, reaping pesky souls and delivering them to the afterlife is all in a day’s work. As coworkers busy themselves at desks or loiter about in the mostly monochrome and dream-like Hall of Doors, the unnamed protagonist is off scouring nearby lands for the souls who got away. In a preview of the Devolver Digital-published Death’s Door last month, it impressed with its cozy environments, snappy combat, and generous attention to detail, and the finished game follows suit with those first impressions. Death's Door is a beautiful, refined, and digestible action-adventure with particularly stunning visual and audio design.

[...]

If Death’s Door is not mentioned in a list of the year’s best indies, it will only be due to its finer focus and lack of complexity or significant depth, which also speaks to the game's utter lack of bloat. Those who are looking for the cavernous biomes of Hollow Knight or the lore-rich epistolatory storytelling in a Souls game may feel shorted by the 10 or so breezy hours on offer here, but Death’s Door is a precisely engineered and immersive adventure which will fully satisfy anyone seeking that exact experience. Isometric action RPGs are a dime a dozen, but rarely are they polished to such a brilliant sheen.
