Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes - Review

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes Review | PC

Command over 100 heroes in an epic and semi buggy adventure.

Remember the days of playing Final Fantasy 7, Dragon Quest, or even Fire Emblem? Those were the days of spending hours on a JRPG that just keeps you hooked with its combat and story. Well, Rabbit & Bear Studios is a Japanese studio that had a vision to create something with a fun and retro feel but with a more modern feeling. However, nothing in life is ever free and their first release is a monster on its own. So, a few months after being founded in 2020, they started up a Kickstarter for some crowdfunding to get Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes off the ground.

Well, almost 4 years later, and with every Kickstarter tier funded, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is officially ready to be released into the wild on 23 April. Lucky for us, we got to have a little sneak peek at this beast of a release and just how much work went into its creation. The very first thing to know is that Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is a JRPG down to its core, but it comes with a few incredible features and a huge roster of playable characters.

[...]

Overall, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is so close to being the feel-good JRPG for 2024 but it still needs a bit of work before it can shine. If you can look past the issues, there’s a whole world to explore and a literal ton of heroes to recruit and experiment with. Let’s not forget the incredible story that you’ll get to experience too as things unfold while you’re exploring.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes - Review @ RPGamer

by Hiddenx, 17:42

RPGamer reviewed Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes:

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes Review

The term “apparitions” refers to “a remarkable or unexpected appearance of someone or something.” When Rabbit & Bear announced Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes in 2020, and that it was being penned by Suikoden series creator Yoshitaka Murayama, there was huge excitement from fans of the long-gone series. Suikoden fans would finally be able to get lost in one of Murayama’s worlds again, even if it wasn’t Suikoden VI. The problem for Eiyuden Chronicle is that it is the ghost of a series long gone, and while it attempts to stand on its own, it’s hard not to recognize the similarities it possesses to the classic RPG series it pays homage to. However, knowing this, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is an old-school experience chock full of interesting storytelling, adorable weirdos, and tons of content to explore. Where it falters comes from needing just a bit more time in the oven and a few more modern conveniences.

[...]

Playing through Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes was an addictive and wonderful experience. When I stopped playing, I was constantly thinking about the characters, story, and the world-building that Rabbit & Bear has created. The game is very much a love letter to JRPG and Suikoden fans, and while there are a lot of similarities, I personally didn’t find that detracting. After putting more than fifty hours into the game, it reminded me of both the joy of being in one of Murayama’s worlds, and the sadness that he will never pen another game in this series. While there are elements of the game that needed more time in the oven, I cannot deny the happiness I felt every time I booted up the game.

Score: 4/5

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes - Sequel planned

by Hiddenx, 18:18

Gematsu reports that a sequel for the upcoming Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is already planned:

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes sequel planned

"We are moving forward with a sequel," studio says.

Rabbit & Bear Studio is “moving forward with a sequel” to strategy RPG Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, the company said in a Reddit AMA held earlier this week.

Asked if the recent death of Suikoden creator and Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes scenario writer Yoshitaka Murayama has put any potential plans for a sequel on the backburner, Rabbit & Bear Studio responded:

“We are moving forward with a sequel. It is very sad that Murayama is not with us anymore, but we have discussed many things with him. I hope we will be able to carry on Murayama’s legacy, and I always want to treasure his last work. I hope many people will support this game.”

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes - Preview

by Hiddenx, 18:05

Siliconera checked out Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes:

Preview: Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes Offers Classic JRPG Vibes

I played a lot of old school PS1 classics on my PSP back in the day, since I never owned the JRPG-centric console, but one of the most memorable games I played was Suikoden 2. As such, my hype for Eiyuden Chronicles: Hundred Heroes couldn’t be higher, and it fortunately seems to lives up to the hype so far.

Ahead of launch, I checked out a recent PC demo build of the game on my Steam Deck that let me see a solid chunk of what seemed to be an early part of the adventure. The story elements felt a bit light, despite the frequent cutscenes, which left me very little to go on. That said, what I know without a doubt is how stunning its visuals seemed.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes bears some similarities to the HD-2D stylings of the Octopath Traveler games, minus the pixel art. It has a beautiful mix of the 2D hand-drawn characters and colorful 3D environments. The world looks stunning, from what I saw. This build included a neat mix of places to explore, such as a smaller town, a more open world map area, and mysterious ruin dungeon.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes - Beta Impressions

by Hiddenx, 07:29

RPGamer checked out Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes:

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes Beta Impression

Murayama’s magnum opus feels like it’s going to be special.

The wait for Rabbit & Bear Studio’s flagship RPG, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, is almost over. A beta version that covers the opening hours of the game is available on PC for Kickstarter backers. After watching the opening video and playing through the first section of the game it was clear: Yoshitaka Murayama’s magnus opus feels like it’s going to be special.

Sadly Yoshitaka Murayama will not be able to enjoy Eiyuden’s success, as he passed away in early 2024. The founder of Rabbit & Bear Studios and the creative force behind the game’s script, Murayama leaves behind both grateful fans and a legacy of cherished RPGs. Murayama was also responsible for creating the Suikoden franchise, as he worked on the first three mainline games, a Suikoden card game, and the two Suikogaiden side-stories.

Speaking of Suikoden, the similarities and homage seen within Eiyuden Chronicle is clear and evident in almost every aspect. From the six-party member battles, to running sprite seen during loading screens, to recruiting a large assortment of unique and colorful characters, Eiyuden Chronicle channels Murayama’s Suikoden in everything except the name. Eiyuden Chronicle benefits greatly from the quality of life improvements that have become commonplace since Suikoden’s run, such as auto advance dialogue, fully voiced English or Japanese language options, difficulty options, and map markers, among other niceties. Eiyuden Chronicle blends the best elements from old and new-school style RPGs into a brand new adventure.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes Preview - A Hundred Reasons To Believe In The Power Of RPGs

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes looks to remind us of how magical RPGs can be.

Being a spiritual successor to a legendary title is a pretty damn tough act to follow. One that few have managed to live up to. Bloodstained, the spiritual successor to Symphony of the Night, has plenty of fans, but it is generally not considered to have matched the quality of its inspiration, and the less we say about Mighty Number 9 the better. But those games and their 2.5D graphical styles always felt like compromises. Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, on the other hand, has many Suikoden 2 fans excited for the opposite reason: there isn’t a compromise in sight.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes Preview – A Promising Spiritual Successor to Suikoden

One series that continually captivates me, yet remains criminally underrated, is Suikoden. Be it the first release, fifth installment, or spin-off titles like Tierkreis, I’ve explored the rich worlds with unwavering enthusiasm. Unfortunately, the dissolution of the creative team and Konami abandoning the series, it shattered hopes for a continuation, or revival of the series.

[...]

Based on my initial impressions, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes shows great promise as a spiritual successor to Suikoden. With the release date rapidly approaching, I anticipate thoroughly enjoying the full game. While it’s premature to say Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes will attain the same revered status as the Suikoden series; my early experiences instill confidence, and I have high hopes for its success based on what I’ve played thus far.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes - December 2023 Update

by Hiddenx, 09:46

Couchpotato spotted the December update for Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes:

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes Dec ’23 Update

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is approaching its April 23, 2024 release date. Since our last update, the team shared a video showing something off. We will share that video below as well as the update for December 2023. December’s update is shorter as we start to get back on track. In this update, we get some information about the PC edition, Murayama’s monthly update, a sneak peek from Komuta, and news about the update schedule. So let’s get into December’s update for Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes!

The team wanted to start, by talking to the fans and community. So they started by saying this about Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes and Rising:

"Hey there, Heroes!

The end of 2023 is nearing and that means… a new year and more importantly the year Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is released to the masses. We have certainly had our ups and downs but continue to work on making the best game possible. We know it’s still a few months away so if you are looking for something to play over the Christmas break you can always pick up Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising and get an introduction to some of the key characters (and wield a giant sword as a kangaroo!)

Wish you and yours the happiest of holidays!"

Eiyuden Chronicle Hundred Heroes Pc Edition
The team wanted to clear up any confusion about physical copies for PC. So to clear that up they said this about Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes on PC:

"Regarding the PC physical edition, the game will be provided as a code in a physical PC box, not as a physical disc. Mastering a PC version, creating the installer, checking that version, and manufacturing the CDs make the code in a box the most viable solution. We thank you for your understanding."

Update Schedule
With the end of the year being kind of crazy for the team the updates haven’t been on their normal cadence. So the team had this to say about their update schedule in 2024 leading to the release of Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes:

"While we largely kept to the last Wednesday of every month up until recently, platform selections and other logistical updates knocked us off track a bit. Due to the year-end holidays, the next update will be on January 10th. From there we’ll return to our regular end-of-month updates straight up until launch."

Eiyuden Chronicle Hundred Heroes Hands-On Preview – First Steps Towards Greatness

Eiyuden Chronicle was first unveiled three and a half years ago, but players haven’t had many opportunities to get their hands on this fabled RPG. It was billed as a spiritual successor to Konami’s Suikoden series, the signature title from Rabbit & Bear Studios. To fill the void from the announcement until its inevitable release, Eiyuden Chronicle launched a spinoff action RPG known as Eiyuden Chronicle Rising to set the stage.

Part of the main draw to the Suikoden franchise lies in the number of recruitable characters, with the narrative itself billed around the 108 Stars of Destiny. Eiyuden Chronicle Hundred Heroes takes it more than ten percent beyond with a roster of more than 110 characters in total, and 505 Games teased that one will be very difficult to unlock. To accommodate the large roster of willing collaborators, players can bring up to ten people in their hunting party. This is broken down into three characters each in the front and rear rows, one support, and three attendants (which we didn’t get to take a look at given how few party members we had during the preview). Some characters can be eligible for both battle and support roles, while none of the original four characters recruited can be given a support role. 505 Games also mentioned offhand that there will be large characters that can take up two slots in the battle party. For Suikoden veterans, this would be reminiscent of exotic party members such as Abizboah the Kraken.
