Final Fantasy IX - Review @ RPGFan

by Hiddenx, 18:59

RPGFan has reviewed the remastered version of Final Fantasy IX:

Final Fantasy IX (Remaster)

"The fun and magic that made the game memorable are still present, but also improved upon in many meaningful ways."

I finished high school about 15 years ago, as of this writing. My memories of those days are fond, talking Magic: The Gathering and video games and just letting my nerd flag fly. My friends and I revelled in the golden age of RPGs, so the work of Squaresoft was a hot topic for us. One particular quote from my good friend Eric, which I can only paraphrase, has always stuck with me, as he summed up the three main Final Fantasy entries of the era:

"Final Fantasy VII is like an anime, VIII is the emo afterschool special, and IX is the Saturday morning cartoon."

I did not play Final Fantasy IX for many years after high school, and I could only question why it took me so long when I eventually did! Final Fantasy IX was a truly magical experience that returned to the roots of fantasy established in the first entry of the series. Bright and bouncy, with a decent level of drama and a memorable cast, the game lived up to my friend Eric's assessment at the time. However, a little older and wiser though I may be, I'm not sure his reductive statement holds true anymore.

Final Fantasy IX - ESRGAN AI-enhanced Texture Pack

by Silver, 19:56

DSOGaming reports that Final Fantasy IX has received a ESRGAN AI-enhanced Beta HD Texture Pack.

Since the reveal of ESRGAN, an AI technique that can enhance the textures of older games, a lot of gamers have been waiting for HD texture packs for the classic Final Fantasy games. And while there is currently one in the works for Final Fantasy 7, a beta version of an HD pack is currently available for download for Final Fantasy 9.

Created by ‘Ze PilOt’, this AI-enhanced HD texture pack can be downloaded from here. Now since this is a beta release, the modder stated that there might be some issues with it.

For example, gamers may experience corrupted backgrounds or bad animations. In case you experience such issues, you should report them to the modder (obviously with a screenshot and the location).

Final Fantasy IX - PC Port Analysis @ PC Gamer

by Hiddenx, 20:45

PC Gamer has reviewed the PC port of Final Fantasy IX:

I still have a little trouble believing Final Fantasy IX on PC is real, even as I play it. Unlike Square's other PlayStation 1 Final Fantasys, IX never got a PC port back in 2000. The company's archival practices in the PlayStation era were notoriously spotty, and as years went by and (nearly) every other game in the series showed up on mobile and PC, a modern port of IX seemed less and less likely. But here it is—and given what they had to work with, Square Enix and Silicon Studio Thailand have built a surprisingly good PC port of Final Fantasy IX, which could easily become a great one with a couple patches and help from modders.

[...]

Final Fantasy IX isn't a perfect port, but it's far better than I expected. The audio issue and control bugs should be fairly low effort to patch, and the bigger problems like slow battle animations and low-res pre-rendered backgrounds were likely never going to be fixed without a complete remake.

The overall state of the port makes me hopeful that a small but dedicated mod scene pops up around IX to fix and improve its weaknesses, then to actually mod the content of the game. Final Fantasy IX is one of my favorite games ever made, but I know it has its weaknesses. Modders, if you're reading: that Trance system sure could use an overhaul.

Final Fantasy IX - PC Port Requires Android Plugins

by Myrthos, 22:09

Couch spotted that WCCFtech has news about the PC port of Final Fantasy IX, which is already available on Android and iOS, will need Android plug-ins in order to run on a PC.

According to the Square Enix website, Final Fantasy IX PC will require additional Android plug-ins to run, something that doesn’t inspire much faith in the port.

Final Fantasy IX - Disable Random Encounters

by Aubrielle, 04:12

Final Fantasy IX's Steam page went live today, and apparently players will have the option to disable random encounters.  As for a release date, Square Enix simply says "Early 2016".

Credits to Couch for tonight's news.

The PC version of Final Fantasy IX, announced last week in Japan, will be out this month according to Steam. And, critically, it’ll let you turn off random encounters.

Says the Steam page, which just went live today:

Additional Features

  • Achievements
  • Seven game boosters including high speed and no encounter modes.
  • Autosave
  • High-definition movies and character models.

This is wonderful. FFIX is without a question one of the best Final Fantasys Square ever put out, but it’s always been marred a bit by the super-high random encounter rate. And anyone who’s played FFVII on PS4 knows just how valuable these “game boosters” can be.
