Final Fantasy VI - Review @ RPGamer

RPGamer has reviewed the Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster:

Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster Review

Future Nostalgia

Nostalgia is a curious thing. It can manifest as you fold an old sweatshirt from college or come across a favorite book, tucked away on a shelf. Our memories of these cherished experiences grow stronger with time, even if things never quite hit the same as we remember. Clothes don’t fit like they used to, and favorite intellectual properties have been cynically rebooted or remade endlessly with diminishing returns. With its Pixel Remaster series, Square Enix attempts to deliver the experience of the 8- and 16-bit era Final Fantasy games with marginal refinements. Remakes are not the goal with this series; instead, it appears Square Enix wants to take players on a stroll down memory lane. Featuring tweaked graphics, improved map functions, and an updated soundtrack, Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster finally delivers the definitive version of a classic title through an experience that not only capitalizes on nostalgia, but looks, plays, and feels like revisiting a memory of an old favorite.

Final Fantasy VI stars over a dozen characters set in a fantasy steampunk setting that effortlessly blends science fiction and high fantasy with a fast-paced story that leaves players breathless. The story has players start as Terra, a brainwashed agent of the Empire who is sent to the mining town of Narshe in order to retrieve a frozen Esper (a magical being from another realm), which has been unearthed in the mines. In Narshe, Terra has a reaction to the Esper that frees her from captivity and joins with Locke, a treasure hunter and member of rebel faction the Returners, to take down the Empire. From there Terra and her growing group of allies work to prevent the Empire from destroying the balance of the world.

Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster brings the definitive version of a 28-year-old game to today’s audiences by looking at modern enhancements and embracing the past. The spirit of the beloved original is honored here, with love of the game showing in every wisp of smoke or hiss from a strike of thunder. Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster doesn’t play exactly like Final Fantasy VI did in 1994 when I first played it, but the experience of this Pixel Remaster certainly looks, sounds, and feels like it did all those years ago. Unlike that old sweatshirt from college, this always fits. That’s the best kind of nostalgia, isn’t it?

Final Fantasy VI - Review @ RPG Site

by Hiddenx, 11:21

The RPG Site reviewed the pixel remasters of Final Fantasy IV - VI:

Final Fantasy IV-VI Pixel Remaster Review

With the much-anticipated re-release of Final Fantasy VI, the Pixel Remaster series is at last complete. Finally, the SNES golden age of Pixel Remaster games can be enjoyed by PC and mobile players, in this aesthetic.

While these three games are well-known classics among genre veterans, these re-releases are also a great opportunity for newer generations to experience these titles for the first time. For those who haven’t had the pleasure before, here’s a brief rundown of these three games.

[...]

Otherwise, these Pixel Remasters have been wonderful treats for longtime fans and incredibly welcoming to an all-new generation of players going on these adventures for the first time. I wouldn’t call these the definitive ways to experience the games due to the lack of additional content that came with previous versions of the titles, but they are by far the most approachable and easily accessible today. With the helpful tips, additional healing points, and fancy features, they are great versions for folks to sink their teeth into, but I’d also recommend moving onto the GBA versions of FF5 and FF6 after and the PSP version of FF4 if they want more.

Fans of JRPGs should buy these games, hands down. They have been and will always be exemplary representatives of what this genre can offer. Now if only they’d do ground-up HD-2D remakes with all previous bonus content…

Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster - To launch on February 23

by Redglyph, 12:58

Destructoid saw an official announce for the release of Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster.

Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster will launch on February 23

The last of the announced Pixel Remasters arrives near the end of the month

The last of the six previously announced Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters has a firm release date. Square Enix confirms that the Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster will go live for Steam and mobile on Feb. 23, 2022.

With Final Fantasy VI, Square Enix closes out the gradual rollout of the retro remasters it announced last year. The first Final Fantasy up through the fifth have all been brought to both Steam and mobile stores, though no console plans have been announced just yet.

Square Enix had previously moved its plans for the last Pixel Remaster into February 2022 to allow some extra time for polish. The news today came with some screenshots of the Pixel Remaster, so you can see how it turned out:
