Fort Triumph - Review @ COG

by Hiddenx, 18:13

COG checked out Fort Triumph:

Fort Triumph Review – Light and Fluffy

This one was like a roller coaster for me. Or a Katy Perry song. I was hot and then I was cold. I’d go through a period where I was an absolute yes, and then I’d realize I was an actual no. It’s a bit difficult to decide how I felt about Fort Triumph overall. At the end of the day though, I think it has the most to do with who the game was made for. What I’m trying to say is, I’m sure there is a target audience for Fort Triumph, but I am not it.

[...]

Funny Game

I don’t mind a somewhat simplistic tactical RPG if I get into the story or the world. And this is one of the places where I fear Fort Triumph may not be the game for me. It’s got jokes. It’s very funny™ is what I’m saying. I’m not friends with any thirteen-year-olds who love Deadpool, but if I was, I might recommend this game to them. It’s fast, light, and easy. The game seems somewhat aware of fantasy tropes and isn’t quite deconstructing them so much as acknowledging them as they whoosh by.

This kind of writing can be nails on a chalkboard if it is done wrong, and Fort Triumph never gets quite that bad. That makes me think that people who enjoy this kind of lightheartedness will be really charmed. But I had trouble engaging with the flat story. No one really wanted anything, it was just a bunch of fantasy archetypes going through the motions and then wryly observing how they were going through the motions.

So who should be playing Fort Triumph? Young folks, I’d say. The sense of humour and simplicity make it sort of a slog for veterans of the genre. But the flexibility of the terrain system and the breeziness of the writing make me think this would be a great way to introduce someone to this style of game. They can work their way up to those more complicated experiences. For now, they get to live in a world where everything is simple, and magical wind can blow your problems away.

Score: 70/100

Fort Triumph - Review @ Screenrant

by Hiddenx, 20:52

Screenrant has reviewed Fort Triumph:

Fort Triumph Review: A Smart, Well-Executed Genre Blend

Fort Triumph deftly blends the genres of turn-based tactics and strategy, neatly wrapping them up in a masterfully deconstructed fantasy package.

Exiting Steam Early Access after two years of player feedback and iteration is Fort Triumph, a turn-based strategy-tactical RPG hybrid with a lot of personality and robust, engaging gameplay. The ambitious title was developed by CookieByte Entertainment, a small Tel Aviv studio who crowdfunded the project on Kickstarter. Its roots run deep in the Dungeons & Dragons Western RPG tradition, relying on the genre's well-trodden themes, faces, and design conceits, while its simple, refined art style rests between that of its digital cousins World of Warcraft and League of Legends. Despite its familiar comforts, the game boasts a disarmingly sharp sense of humor and self-awareness, and its multiple campaigns provide more replayability than its $25 price tag lets on.

[...]

Aside from those minor complaints, CookieByte Entertainment has built a rock-solid composite of turn-based strategy and tactics gameplay, and the end result is easily on-par with the XCOM franchise and Obsidian Entertainment's best modern efforts. Its combat is smart and entertaining, its story and humor are exemplary, and most of what little it currently lacks or could improve upon will likely be ironed out post-launch, as the game has been well-supported and player-focused since its early access development period began. Fort Triumph is worthy of any PC player's time, especially lovers (or even haters) of the fantasy RPG genre.

Fort Triumph - Release Date Announced!

Open the gates! Fort Triumph exits Early Access on April 16th

Long due and finally coming - Fort Triumph will be officially released on the 16th of April for PC!
Later this year, it will also be released on consoles (PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch).

So, what changed since we've set out on this journey, on the first days of Early Access? Let's look at all the major changes that are about to feature in the upcoming launch:

  • Three story acts—the game now has a story campaign that is filled with 10 to 20 hours of gameplay
  • The 8-player Skirmish mode—players can now pit themselves against up to 7 AI enemies or their friends in local co-op (hot seat)
  • More than 30 events and over 80 artifacts added to the game—the events are special locations offering multiple choices that can lead to different results. Artifacts often grant new special abilities to a hero
  • Four hero classes (Paladin, Barbarian, Mage, Ranger), each with 12 upgradable abilities, and four races (Troll, Goblin, Human, Undead), with their own castles and upgradable buildings
  • Massive changes to UI and UX. A lot of graphical improvements
  • All strategic maps are now fully procedurally generated and support having much larger maps
  • Inventory, skill trees and town management, as well as resource management, implemented

The full version of the game, interface and subtitles, will be available in English, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.
