ICON - Review @ CRPG Addict

by Arhu, 09:30

CRPG Addict played ICON: The Quest for the Ring, an early Action-CRPG from 1984 based on Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen operas.

[The game] doesn't do terribly well on my GIMLET, particularly since it lacks NPCs and any kind of real economy. I gave it 5 points for its highly original setting and 3 points in "encounters" for its moderately-challenging puzzles. It does okay (3) in "quests" and fairly well (4) in "gameplay" for its quick pace and somewhat satisfying difficulty. The final score is 22. (..)

ICON might not be a great RPG specifically, but Bohrer and White deserve to be remembered along with developers like Stuart Smith for breaking the Tolkien mold and drawing from classical sources.

  1. Game 197: ICON: The Quest for the Ring (1984)
