RPGWatch - Inquisitor Retrospective

by Couchpotato, 02:42

Fluent played Inquisitor and gave his thoughts on the game in a new article.

On paper, a lot of what I would consider ‘old-school’, isometric RPG fans should be on board with Inquisitor. It is, after all, a game that graphically resembles something like Baldur’s Gate or Arcanum, with an isometric perspective and detailed, hand-drawn backgrounds and graphics. Game-play wise, it mixes some elements from a lot of old-school RPGs as well. You can have party members join you and fight alongside you in real-time combat, and you can pause the game at any point, although it is, admittedly, a bit clunky. There is a lot of dialog and text, lots of loot with well-written descriptions, history and lore, a la a Baldur’s Gate game. There is plenty of exploration, various NPCs to talk to, chests to unlock and traps to mistakenly walk into and get insta-killed, having to re-load your last save. There are evil monsters, dark motives and a strong narrative that carry the game along. All of these features are present and here in full force, tied together with a somewhat unforgiving and high degree of difficulty. Yet somehow, the game hasn’t seemed to click with a large amount of gamers.

Inquisitor - 80% Off On Steam

by Couchpotato, 07:13

Inquisitor is now on sale on Steam for 80% off till September 29th. That's only $2.99 in US currency, and it's the perfect time to buy it if you never played the game.

Ultherst was once a peaceful, God-fearing land until the Three Scourges of God came to pass as foretold by Saint Ezekiel, one of the twelve followers of the First Prophet. First came the famine that devasted the populace. Next came the plague that added more unfortunate souls on Death’s abacus. Finally came the great rain of fire, and death fell down on sinner and innocent alike, blood flooding the streets in place of water. The people, in their desperation, turned away from the Holy Mother Church and delved deep into pagan decadence or succumbed to the temptation of the Devil. You have been charged with the office of Inquisitor. It is up to you to investigate crimes against the one true faith and root out heresy--using any and all means necessary. As in all best computer RPGs--the most important choices are yours to make.

Inquisitor is a unique blend of action-oriented combat with a deep and involving tale of betrayal, torture, madness, and infernal damnation. Put your wits to the test as you collect evidence against possible heretics and put them to trial once they have been charged. Use the might of the Inquisition to extract a confession from your subjects, but be warned, use your power wisely or you will face the consequences. If a gritty old-school open-ended isometric RPG is what you looking for, look no further. Inquisitor will provide you with hours of gameplay and a dark, involving story.

Inquisitor - Review @ New Gamer Nation

by Myrthos, 13:00

New Gamer Nation has reviewed Inquisitor and were not impressed as their rating of 5.5 and the followig bit shows:

Far less compelling is the actual action RPG elements themselves. The game boasts a ridiculous length, but most of it can be chalked up to the mind numbingly slow pace and the amount of busywork the game throws at you. First, the speed of your character is based on a stat, and it is atrocious. The simple act of going to town to sell your loot becomes a boring chore until you speed stat is maxed, and even then your running pace is slightly below that of Diablo 2. Similarly, the game uses a Stamina gauge for attacks, which seems like a somewhat pointless addition of downtime. This makes every dungeon romp a matter of fighting a handful of baddies and then waiting over a minute for it to recharge, again and again and again. This can be ameliorated through generous use of potions, but there doesn’t seem to be any reason for including this system beyond padding.

The actual dungeoneering itself is mixed, going from great fun to frustrating tedium and back again. The game uses an extensive loot system that is rather nice (except for the slow trips back to town to cash it out), and the difficulty definitely skews towards old school toughness for those who like a serious challenge. But occasional glitches and minor complaints always dog the adventure, like a critical quest key that didn’t drop and entire skills being nullified by first level spells. Honestly, if I were to list every single minor issue this review could go on for thousands of words, but most of them are not completely game breaking, just annoying.

Inquisitor - Review @ Just Adventure

by Dhruin, 22:13

There's a screenshot-ladden review of Inquisitor at Just Adventure. The rating is 'C' and the author doesn't recommend the game:

All things considered, I can only recommend the game to fans of old-school RPGs who are prepared to deal with unbalanced, highly-challenging gameplay and are okay with the possibility of encountering bugs -- possibly show-stopping ones -- that, as of this writing, will not be fixed. Anyone who does tackle Inquisitor should do so at his/her own risk.

RPGWatch Feature - Inquisitor Review

by Dhruin, 11:07

Corwin takes a detailed look at Inquisitor, a text-heavy action/RPG with an unusual premise developed in the Czech Republic that we've been following for over 10 years. Here's a sample:

Strange things are occurring and people are being murdered. It’s your job to discover what is really happening, why are people being killed and who is committing these crimes. You have to gather clues, evidence and eventually hold a trial. Thus the need to talk with everyone. Once you have gathered all the available information you can begin exploring for more clues, while also completing several quests you will have obtained. Some of these quests are necessary before an NPC will divulge essential information; fairly standard RPG procedure. Some people will readily tell you everything you want to know, while others will want a bribe first. If you build your character a certain way, you can often intimidate people rather than bribing them. Different character types will have different options which does give the game some replay value.

Read it all here.

Inquisitor - Review @ RPGCodex

by Myrthos, 12:48

RPGCodex has reviewed Inquisitor reaching the conclusion that you should stay away from it.

Bluntly put, Inquisitor is a bad game. There is not a single gameplay aspect it excels at. Far from that - it actually manages to implement many of the common hack and slash mechanics in such a haphazard manner that the end result is naught but an unplayable mess. It is evident that the developers lacked focus and did not know what it was they were trying to convey and what the strongest aspects of their project could and should be. It is as if they had picked the wrong medium for their goal. With its excellent art direction and the decent story it tells, Inquisitor could have been a good illustrated novel or comic book. As an interactive medium, however, Inquisitor fails miserably simply because its creators did not know what makes a good game. I appreciate the developers’ effort and wish them good luck in the hope that their next endeavor will be better thought through design-wise, but I cannot in good faith recommend this game to anyone.

Inquisitor - Review @ GamerLive

by Myrthos, 00:12

Boring gameplay, that is the overall conclusion of this review of Inquisitor at Gamerlive, resulting in a score of 6 out of 10.

The game has a few interesting parts, such as dynamic music depending on location, level design that truly rewards and demands exploration as well as interesting locations. However all this is marred by the actual gameplay. Most mechanics are not well explained well, if at all. Character progression is a joke because if you try to build anything other than the best combatant possible you get destroyed in combat, but that still doesn’t stop it from being boring as hell. Also, you have stat called speed, it grants a buff to defence but it mostly just controls how fast you move. When moving in a large environment, I don’t want to move like a slug just because I choose to make a character that is strong not fast.

Inquisitor - Review @ GameBanshee

by Aries100, 16:32

Eric Schwarz from Gamebanshee has penned a 3-page review for this game. As always, the review is scoreless. However, it seems clear that he doesn't find it very good:

Unfortunately, though Inquisitor has all the right ingredients to put a smile on an RPG fan's face, Inquisitor is let down by some colossally bad design choices which result in a game which is one-quarter charming and engrossing, but three-quarters frustrating, repetitive and monotonous in the extreme. With some of the worst game balance I have ever seen in an RPG, overly linear quest design, a lack of player influence on the story, awful combat, and massive amounts of filler content, Inquisitor's ambitions never amount to anything that can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the classics of the genre. While it does have its strong points, it will take an incredibly strong-willed player to endure the dozens upon dozens of hours of torturous gameplay it takes to reach the good parts.

Inquisitor - Review @ Gamasutra

by Myrthos, 23:37

Gamasutra takes a long look into Inquisitor and bring us their views of the negative points of Inquisitor, with a promise that they will bring another article soon with the positive elements.

If there is one problem that permeates just about all of Inquisitor, it's direction.  The game is simply not very good at telling the player what to do, where to go, and when.  When you're given a quest, most of the time you're on your own in figuring things out... which is both rewarding, and occasionally extremely frustrating.

Inquisitor starts out with your character standing alone in a forest, on a dirt road.  Although some vague instructions are given during the introduction, it's not one second into the game and already things are a little unclear.  Exactly where am I?  Where am I supposed to go?  How do I know how to get there?  Following the road north soon reveals the gate to the town of Hillbrandt, which is barred shut by the guards, who insist that I go fight some giant bats pestering the town walls before I'm let in.  Not more than a few seconds into the game and already I have my first side-quest.

Inquisitor - Reviews

by Myrthos, 00:23

Here are three reviews of Inquisitor, the recently released game at GoG.

Snackbar Games 4/5:

Despite using archaic D&D-style gameplay, most of it holds up extremely well because of how well it is implemented. The only aspect of the gameplay that was frustrating was the way stamina works. As you’d expect from other action-RPGs, stamina is required for physical actions, and running out is a very bad thing. That’s not the problem, as that’s the way all games have handled it. The problem is that once it runs out, it takes forever for it to regenerate unless you have potions to use. And you can’t walk around or look through your inventory or journal while it refills, because moving or opening a menu stops the regeneration.

GripYaJoystick 4.5/5:

Inquisitor’s game play is really where it feels like Diablo 2. You pick from 3 different classes (yes I know there are more then that in Diablo 2): a paladin, a priest, and a thief. All 3 can learn spells but the priest will learn more knowledgeable spells. Paladins learn better melee combat, and thief’s are better at ranged combat. Your inventory is slotted where weapons and armor could take up between 3 to 8 squares. Potions and scrolls take up a square a piece. Unlike Diablo 2 you get 5 pages for your inventory. You can recruit members to your party to help you fight, and I will tell you this is a game where you want a party. The game is pretty difficult on medium, I’ve died probably over 30 times. Enemies swarm you from about every direction.

Gameranx:

And so we come to the ultimate question: should you buy this game? 14.99 is a wonderful price for a product with so much content. It's atmospheric, unique, mature, and also a little hard to recommend without some caveats. Inquisitor is an investment, both in terms of time and sometimes patience. But if you want a deep role-playing game that absolutely does not hold your hand, that's gritty and dark and full of believable but lengthy lore, then Inquisitor may be the RPG you've been waiting for.

Inquisitor - English Beta Launches

by Dhruin, 22:36

Several RPGWatch readers are doubtless playing the Inquisitor beta right now, which launched Monday - but Cinemax has just now publically announced:

The Inquisitor RPG launches the English beta

After ten years of development, three years of translations and several months of proofreading, the closed English beta of the old-school RPG game Inquisitor begins. The beta will run throughout August with the release aimed for this autumn.

About Inquisitor
Inquisitor is a dark medieval drama with maximum style and great emphasis on details.

The game brings you, a medieval inquisitor, to a gloomy world full of heresy, betrayal and devilish plots. You will hunt for perpetrators of the most atrocious crimes and you will meet a lot of cunning enemies. You will find yourself in the midst of a powerful conspiracy striving to destroy even the foundations of the thousand-year old Empire. As one of the three main characters you will explore all the mysteries of this depressing world and gain reputation of a fearless inquisitor and a witch hunter. Carry out dozens of secondary quests and develop your potential in order to face the more powerful and dangerous enemies and challenges. And remember—everything you do depends just on your own choice!

The main pillars of Inquisitor are primarily a fast action and a catching storyline supplemented by an original game system and unique skills and abilities of the main heroes. The authors have inspired themselves with the high standards of the RPG genre and added an inexhaustible amount of their own ideas and inventions. The result is an attractive and easy to control game with an intriguing potential. And it's only up to the players which of these possibilities they will discover and utilize.

The storyline is based mainly on the investigation of various crimes, thus the core components of the game are to expose malefactors, gain evidence against them and prove them guilty in court, using both the canon law and the secular law of the Empire. One of the most important laws is the Inquisitional Codex which lays down the rules and principles of the inquisitional process. And it's the codex that governs your methods and actions while hunting for heretics and witches who threaten the whole Empire with their obscure plots.

A very important part of the inquisitional process is the torturing. It allows you to use up to four torture instruments (a rack, a strappado, a pillory and an iron maiden) when interrogating the worst criminals.

• High-resolution state-of-the-art graphics
• Original artistic presentation
• Extensive locations and large areas to explore
• A credible story from the medieval fantasy world
• Spectacular soundtrack
• Three playable characters (priest, knight, thief) with three unique independent stories
• Surface areas and gloomy underground locations
• Interrogation, torturing, sentencing
• Massive RPG system
• Combat, occultism, sorcery

Inquisitional statistics:
• 3 playable characters, 90 monsters and 180 NPCs
• Animations of the game characters, reflecting every change in the equipment, consist of almost one million sprites (i.e. graphical elements)
• 34 surface areas with deep forests, green pastures and extensive towns
• 1.2 million square meters of exteriors
• Dozens of interiors, buildings, temples, palaces and forts
• 37 extensive dungeon complexes (including multilevel dungeons)
• 100 kilometers of twisting corridors
• Game environment design uses 50,000 manually finished sprites
• More than 200 weapons and projectiles, including many magical ones
• 80 spells with spectacular effects, 7 different schools of magic
• Huge amount of potions
• More than 5,000 pages of text

Inquisitor - More Beta Details

by Dhruin, 00:35

Looks like things are actually coming together for Inquisitor, with more detail on the expected beta posted on Facebook:

The beta will be launched at the end of July, it will run through August and the game will be ready for release in September (the exact release date being affected by negotiations with digital distribution sites).

Inquisitor - Beta Soon?

by Dhruin, 22:04

News from the the Inquisitor Facebook page of significant progress that might see the beta released by the end of the month!

We are sure you would like to hear some news, so here it comes: The proofreading of both the non-dialogue texts and the priest’s dialogue texts was finished. We compiled the first beta build (with priest only) and uploaded it to our FTP server, but then we found out that the adaptation of priest’s dialogues for paladin runs much faster than we ever hoped for, and thus we decided to postpone the beta a bit and launch it with all three characters available from the very beginning. We need about one more day to have the paladin’s dialogues ready and a few other days then to prepare the dialogues for thief. I believe it is safe to say that the beta will be launched full-scale by the end of this month.

...and a small, subsequent update:

In accordance with the plan (for a change), the paladin's dialogues are now ready and implemented in the game. Based on your character, you meet different people that say different things to you, and you can also visit different places. You will get the most content when playing as a priest (for example, there are "only" 191 dialogue files for paladin, while there are 322 of them for priest). And now let's focus on the thief...

Thanks, Wulf!

Inquisitor - English Site Launched

by Dhruin, 10:03

Well, well - my preorder may yet come to fruition. Cinemax has launched a new official English website for Inquisitor, saying the release is getting "closer":

As the release of the English version of Inquisitor is getting closer, it is the right time to launch the English website. Don’t be afraid to check everything it offers to you, such as an extensive introduction to the game world, basics you should know, as well as the details about the main characters or an in-depth overview of all seven fields of magic (both permitted and forbidden). There are even several new screenshots from the English version waiting for you in the Gallery! And even though you have probably seen the official trailer already, you can always watch it again

Inquisitor - Site Updates

by Dhruin, 21:02

Minor news, I know, but Cinemax' official Inquisitor page has been tidied up and the Facebook page has a couple of updates - a new cover photo and shakycam footage of Inquisitor running on a 4-monitor setup @ 3820x 2400 res.

Casual readers won't see anything new on the official page but the outdated preorder offer has been removed and text has been tweaked. Hopefully this means we're slowly getting somewhere.

Inquisitor - Proof-Readers Needed

by Dhruin, 22:41

Cinemax needs some proof-readers for Inquisitor, according to a Facebook post. Sounds like you'll need to read a lot of material, so don't put your hand up lightly:

I'm wondering... is there a native speaker here that would be interested in helping us with the proofreading of those accompanying texts (Book of Armor and Weapons, Codex Inquisitorium, Revelation of Ezekiel and the Inquisitor novel)? Ben is overwhelmed at work right now and doesn't have enough time for that.

Friday - March 09, 2012

Inquisitor - Development Update

by Dhruin, 21:19

A minor update on Inquisitor, which is inching forward it seems:

So... both intro and outro videos are now in English (subtitles only, there is no voice-over in them, nor in the game itself). And now that ingame text...

Also, if you have Steam account and would like to see Inquisitor there, please join our community group (see below). It could help us to get Inquisitor onto Steam if there is a group full of fans (and potential customers for Valve) there. Thanks.

Inquisitor - English Version Updates

by Dhruin, 08:56

I check the Inquisitor page every few days and, every now and then, the official Facebook page - what I'd missed was a stream of comments and responses under some screens posted last August on that Facebook page. So, here's a selection of replies from "Inquisitor (RPG)" over a period of months that gives a much better sense of the situation. The last was January 18th, bringing us right up to date.

Last August, on the possibility of new things in the English version:

Unfortunately not. The original developers from Wooden Dragon went their separate ways a long time ago and so there is no one to add any new content to the game.

We'd previously heard that all the "in game" text had been translated but now it becomes clear there's a lot more to do - only one of the three class translations has actually been added to the game:

We still want to launch the English beta this October and if everything goes right the game should be released by the end of this year. The English translation is done already, all priest's texts are in the game, now we have to get paladin's and thief's texts into it as well. It is a bit complicated and lengthy due to the way the texts were translated, but it's nothing we won't handle:-)

Late October and other issues are getting in the way:

And we are glad to hear that. But I'm afraid that the English version won't be released this year after all - even though I promised that. The release of Gyro13 and server crash recovery took more time than I originally assumed and since the beta test (= check of English translation in the game) will need some time, I don't think there is a chance to make it all by the end of this year. At least it will give us time for other things (like to translate the Inquisitor prequel novel).

Someone suggests they release the game with the one class that is finished but that won't work:

As the original development team practically doesn't exist anymore, we can't do any changes in the programming code, so to release the game with one playable character only isn't really an option. Moreover, to release any part of the game in English, a thorough test is necessary to fine-tune the translation directly in the game. For that we need a web interface, as I assume, for testers to submit their corrections. And we still don't have that either. We have to wait for Lukas to find some time for that. Meanwhile, I've finished the Book of Armor and Weapons that is currently waiting for proofreading.

Early January now and they haven't actually progressed:

As far as the ingame text is concerned, there is no progress whatsoever. But we discussed it over... a few... glasses of beer with the guy that wrote the whole text in Czech and learned about what we should be careful about when transfering the translation of priest's texts to other characters. And as far as other texts go, the proofreading of the Book of Armor and Weapons should start soon and the Revelation of Ezekiel should be translated by the end of this week.

January 9th and we learn only one person is working on it, although again it isn't clear how much actually remains to do:

Well, yes, I'm the only one who is working on the translation, but it's the translation of "other" texts that is left to be done, the ingame text was translated quite some time ago and while I'm waiting for a programmer to prepare a system that would allow us to adapt the priest translation for paladin and thief, I'm making use of this time for the translation of some supporting texts (halfway through Codex Inquisitorium now).

January 18th and everyone who preordered should get a beta invite...eventually:

Yes, I assume that everyone who will have Inquisitor pre-ordered at the moment the beta is ready will receive an invitation to it.

Inquisitor - Forum Update

by Dhruin, 23:51

Roland sends in an Inquisitor update from their forums, where someone who preordered back in January asks for a release update (my preorder is so old I can't remember what year it was). Last we heard they were aiming for beta-testing back in March, which of course didn't happen. Now it appears their focus is other games but perhaps the end of the year is the suggestion:

Hello Jean,

thanks for pre-ordering the English version of Inquisitor. Even though we are currently working on other projects (Gyro13 among others), we would like to release the English version of Inquisitor by the end of this year. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Inquisitor - Forum "Update"

by Dhruin, 23:26

Roland sent us an Inquisitor forum link that's actually old (March) but, hey, it's nice to have an update every year or so. Here's Cinemax' Martin Kovár responding about languages:

For the time being, yes. But Russian and English versions are in the works. The start of closed English betatest was promised for this March. Let's hope it will make it:-)

I think you missed it, Martin.

Inquisitor - Official Page Update

by Dhruin, 23:57

Nothing we don't already know but Cinemax has finally updated the dates on the Inquisitor official site - surely the slowest update in internet history.  Last year's preorder deadline has been changed to December 2010 and the release date has been updated to "2011".

Inquisitor - English Version Update #4

by Dhruin, 10:21

Good heavens, a new Inquisitor update.  This just landed in my inbox:

We apologize for the delay

Most of ingame text is now translated to English. It has been difficult and a real challenge in our lives. We have been working very hard on Inquisitor for more than 10 years. We are currently working on preparing English beta version; we appreciate your patience and support. We look forward to having beta version until end of year. Than we will start closed beta test.

Inquisitor - English Version Update #3

by Myrthos, 16:15

Our reader Roland spotted that on the Inquisitor forum Martin Kovar said the following:

We are waiting for Akella, so that we could work on Russian and English versions simultaneously. Unfortunately, I don't think any more that the English version will be released this year.

This means that they can update their website and replace the 2010 by 2011.

Inquisitor - English Version Update #2

by Dhruin, 21:05

Every day I breeze past the Inquisitor page and glance at the "preorder before December 31st 2009" text that still remains.  Our reader Roland wrote to them in May and finally received a brief response (this gives me hope I might get an answer from my emails from five years back) on the current progress, which he was kind enough to pass on:

We are still working on English version of Inquisitor. It's really huge game.

Inquisitor - English Version Update

by Dhruin, 11:18

Here's a rarity - an Inquisitor update.  Cinemax' website still promises a Q1 release date for the English version but this arrived in my inbox not long ago:

Inquisitor - Czech Release?

by Dhruin, 19:55

Hisvin writes of updates to the Inquisitor page, including a score of 80% (with some sort of Baldur's Gate comparison) that would seem to indicate the game has been released somewhere.  The Czech is otherwise impenetrable to me, so if any readers want to help out, drop by the comments.

Inquisitor - Signs of Life - First Trailer

by Dhruin, 22:26

Remember Inquisitor?  We've followed this for years across our two sites and every now and then it shopws signs of life and then dies off.  Cinemax has now released the first trailer, which can be found at VoodooExtreme.  Word is the Czech version should be released late this year and the English version in Q1 2010 but I'll believe it when I see it.

Thanks, Leth!

Inquisitor: English Site Launched

by Dhruin, 22:47
Thanks to Todd for pointing out that Wooden Dragon has opened an English site for Inquisitor. It's some time since we had any meaningful news on this title, so here's their description as a reminder:
The game Inquisitor is being developed by a new Czech team Wooden Dragon under the aegis of Cinemax, Ltd. Our common goal is to create a game that will never let the player quit until the last hellish monster or evil heretic is slain!

Inquisitor would like to reach the quality of such legends of PC RPGs as Dungeon Master, Ultima Underworld, The Elder Scrolls: Arena or Baldur's Gate.

The creators of Inquisitor were inspired by novels of well-known Italian writer Umberto Eco, especially by his famous novel The Name of the Rose. However, the inspiration lies not in the story (of course), but in a dark atmosphere and the way of story telling. On the other hand an attentive player will have a chance to find a lot of similarities with this literary masterpiece as well as with some other Eco's novels (Foucault's Pendulum, Baudolino).
