Moon Hunters - Replaying Value

by Hiddenx, 09:01

Gamasutra analyzed the replaying value of the adventure RPG Moon Hunters:

Replaying value: A unity of mechanics and theme in Moon Hunters

“We remember something new with each telling. Together, let’s tell the story again and again.”

With those words begins another session of Kitfox Games’ Moon Hunters, a puzzle-box myth that was recently selected as one of the PAX 10. Each playthrough is a variation on the theme of an epochal event that sees moon-worshipping tribes pitted against an ascendant, militaristic sun cult bent on destroying them. A single session in this game--once billed as a “co-op personality test” for its heavy emphasis on taking the measure of your character--will last between 75 and 90 minutes, but it’s not meant to be played once.

This is, more than most RPGs, a truly mythopoeic game from top to bottom. It is about playing through every possible embellished variation on the same mythic story, a ludic rendering of how our own real myths come to be. In this, the repetition serves an expressive purpose. There isn’t much in Moon Hunters’ mechanics or its emphasis on replayability that’s strictly new; what impresses is how they are used to draw the game’s theme into sharp definition. Moon Hunters is a prime example of a game that harmonizes its themes with its “gamey-ness.”

Moon Hunters - Review @ RPG Fan

by Hiddenx, 15:19

RPG Fan has reviewed the Action RPG Moon Hunters - multiplayer seems to be broken:

Moon Hunters may not have the most enticing name when combing through the thousands upon thousands of titles shoveled onto Steam, but Moon Hunters is anything but shovelware. Although it's left Early Access, Moon Hunters is still a work in progress, but not necessarily in terms of the design itself. Kitfox Games' latest title boasts a heavily immersive multiplayer experience, but with port forwarding woes and enduring problems connecting to friends, wide-eyed consumers may find themselves flying solo — to the Steam refund system.

[...]

Now, I have to caution about something that I alluded to earlier that makes this title difficult to recommend: the multiplayer — or lack thereof. Moon Hunters plays best as a multiplayer experience, but setting up multiplayer requires a trip to the forums. Novices in networking will feel a tinge of frustration, and even after following those steps, the game may not support multiplayer. I spent hours (yes, plural) trying to get multiplayer to work, but I never got it running. After chasing down strangers on the forums, I got a taste of the multiplayer experience, and I really enjoyed it. Is this the kind of experience the developers envisioned? I don't know, because the developers rarely ever responded to the slew of complaints on the forums as people who bought their game sought assistance.

Moon Hunters is a novel, simple experience with a fresh, chill vibe mired in technical issues. I hope this review is out-of-date at some point and readers tilt their heads a bit when they read my fussing over multiplayer, but as Moon Hunters stands now as a purchasable title, I can't recommend it unless the single-player experience sounds enticing. Personally, I'll likely hunt the moon again once the multiplayer is definitively fixed, but until then, I'll watch the stars and remember heroes past.

Score: 65/100

Moon Hunters - Available for Mac and Linux

by Myrthos, 12:49

Moon Hunters is now also available for Mac and Linux on Steam and also on GOG.

OSX Minimum Requirements:
OS: OS X Lion 10.8.5
 Processor: Dual Core CPU
 Memory: 2 GB RAM
Graphics: OpenGL 3.0 compliant with 1Gb of video RAM. 1024 x 768 or larger resolution
Storage: 2 GB available space

Linux Minimum Requirements:
OS: Ubuntu 12.04+
Processor: Dual Core CPU
Memory: 2 GB RAM
Graphics: OpenGL 3.0 compliant with 1Gb of video RAM. 1024 x 768 or larger resolution
Storage: 2 GB available space

Online Multiplayer Fixes (Cross-Platform!)

By the way! Mac and Linux users can (as far as we can tell) play Online with all other desktop players. Play together! No need to segregate yourselves. Unless you want to, I guess.
With the desktop compatibilities out of the way, for the next two weeks, Marcelo will be working hard on figuring out how to make the Online component easier to use and more robust.
Easier to use? You see, we seem to have overestimated the number of people willing to go through with (and underestimated the variety of routers involved in) the arcane nonsense of port forwarding, so we are going to explore Steam lobbies to see if it helps us "punch through" the firewalls.
They are also working on a PS4 version.

Moon Hunters - Review @ WGTC

by Hiddenx, 08:49

We Got This Covered reviewed the action RPG Moon Hunters:

If last year the indie scene was, once again, dominated by roguelikes and survival games, 2016 seems to be all about hacking ‘n’ slashing through worlds of high fantasy rendered in glorious pixel art. While release dates for the likes of Death’s Gambit, EITR, and Below remain hazy, the first of a gorgeous bunch is already upon us with Moon Hunters, and, if Kitfox Games’ sophomore effort is any indication, it’s going to be a vintage year.

An action RPG for up to four players (playing locally or online), Moon Hunters‘ surface simplicity belies a host of original ideas and some refreshingly oddball mechanics. It is, also, an exceedingly hard game to describe. The setup is conventional enough: on the night of a major festival, the moon, worshipped as a goddess by your tribe, fails to rise. You have just three days to seek out neighboring tribes, explore nearby ruins and temples, and, perhaps even contact the dreaded Sun Cult to find information about her disappearance.

[...]

Though the hardcore crowd may scoff at its unsophisticated combat system and the lack of a serious challenge, Moon Hunters' gorgeous presentation and unique brand of storytelling will absorb anyone who wishes to explore the countless sagas of an enchanting fantasy world.

Score: 4/5 - Great

Moon Hunters - Delayed to March

by Myrthos, 23:40

Moonhunters has been delayed with two weeks and is now scheduled for March 10.

I sincerely apologize for the delay, but I also guarantee that the wait will be worth it! The game is coming along swimmingly and those 2 weeks will mean the world to the stability of the game, especially in online play.

Because of this delay, we were able to overhaul the online save/load system and support dropped connections much better. Previously, there was a chance you'd lose all of your progress if someone disconnected! So, I'm glad Marcelo has that extra time to make things clean and tidy.

(Mac & Linux will come in the weeks following the PC launch.)

More info at the link, or watch the video instead.

Moon Hunters - On Steam This Month

by Myrthos, 12:50

Moon Hunters is coming to Steam on the 25th of February.

loading...

The good news is that the game is only 5 weeks (ed: since the 20th of January) away (for PC on Steam -- Mac and Linux to follow shortly after.. then certification begins on the PS4 version). The even more good news is that everything looks like it's pretty much on track!

It might feel long to you if you've been waiting for a while, but to us it seems like it's looming tomorrow and there's an infinite amount of little improvements we want to make...! We're trying not to panic...!

Moon Hunters - Lessons On Procedural Storytelling

by Myrthos, 12:11

Moon Hunter's Lead Designer Tanya Short shares three lessons on procedural storytelling with us, in this article on Gamasutra.

The game is a co-operative RPG that tasks players with finding out what happened to the moon, which has gone missing. Against the backdrop of fantasy version of ancient Mesopotamia, players explore a world in which environment is randomized, but so are the story beats and characters they encounter along the way. Across short play sessions, players retell the same myth with different characters the way that a storyteller might continually recast Pandora, The Monkey King, or other ancient heroes. It's a tradition dating back across many cultures, including Polynesian storytelling and classical myth making.

In searching for an opportunity to have players experience “the multiple truths of storytelling,” Short hit upon 3 fundamental lessons for investing players in a randomized quest.

1) Break away from duality

To start, Short explains that nailing the “multiple playthroughs, multiple stories” tone for Moon Hunters depended on successfully introducing what it means for a story to have different retellings. To her, those carrying versions ultimately represent a wide variety of possible truths, with each tale's telling having a different moral or point depending on the context of when it was told....

Moon Hunters - Preview @ The Escapist

by Myrthos, 22:57

The Escapist have checked out Moon Hunters and have, amongst others this to say:

As you're adventuring, you'll be presented with choices in various situations. You'll camp, for example, and have to choose between going out hunting, tending the campfire, sleeping, or any number of other options. Depending on what you choose as well as the results of your attempt, you'll garner some reputation points in one or more of 11 personality traits. Once that playthrough has ended, your reputation will be immortalized as a legend, based on the trait values you've accrued. These legends appear in game as constellations in the night sky, making the game's entire universe seem fuller and fuller as you commit to more playthroughs, and the night sky is enriched with these constellations....

As before, I think the greatest strength of Moon Hunters is its ability to engage players with vastly different motivations for gaming. Occasionally, I get really sad when friends come over because they rarely want to watch me play a single-player story-focused RPG. Moon Hunters lets you share the experience with your friends, regardless of whether their affinity is for action or story.

Moon Hunters - Live Streams & Pre-orders

by Couchpotato, 00:32

Kitfox Games latest post-funding update for Moon Hunters has news on a new live stream, pre-orders, surveys, and talks about an updated poster print.

Pre-orders

If someone you know wants to support us, or reserve a copy, send them to http://www.moonhuntersgame.com/ ! If you scroll down, you'll see pre-order links for the game, 2-packs, 4-packs, and the soundtrack.

Surveys

Many of you have received your backer surveys; others are waiting a bit longer.

We originally thought we wouldn't ask for platform confirmation until closer to launch, but we really want to send out those t-shirts, postcards, posters, and fabric prints as soon as possible! Besides, many backers are helping contribute to the game with characters or systems, so we need their contributions sooner rather than later. And since Kickstarter won't let us send out more than one survey per tier... here we are.

The main reason many of you haven't received surveys yet is because we're finalising the look of the fabric prints, specifically revising the 'world map' to better-reflect our vision of (one version of) the ancient world. So once we have that settled, the rest of the surveys will go out.

If you aren't entitled to any physical rewards, and want to wait a few months to fill out your survey, that's totally fine by us! We'll be busy working on making the game in the meantime. :)

Moon Hunters - Art & Stretch Goals

by Couchpotato, 02:55

Kitfox Games latest kickstarter update for Moon Hunters has information about a change to the to the PS4 stretch goal, and shares some new songweaver art.

PS4 Stretch Goal

After a team discussion we realized that with a tiny core team of 4, we realistically don't have the resources to support both the PS4 and PS3. We want to focus on making the best game we can and deliver it to our backers on time! It was a really difficult decision to make, but we simply can't afford to be on the PS3 as well. Some of you may be upset, and we apologize, but we'd rather correct it now than after the campaign.

We also want to clarify that the PS4 version will be released after the PC version. We don't want to divert our attention from the game itself so that we can release it on time! :D Then we can focus entirely on making the best PS4 version possible.

Songweaver Art

Introducing... the Songweaver in her complete form! Thanks everyone for joining the Twitch livestream last Friday! Mike and I had a really good time drawing and chatting with you guys! We hope to have another one this week :)

As an initiated priestess of the Moon, the Songweaver understands each of the elements, bringing together Wild harmonies, Blood rhythms, Dark dissonance, and Bronze strength. When the world was created, we invented music to remember and mourn.

The Songweaver is a complex support class. It is not technically impossible to play as her alone, but without a friend, you're in for a challenge.
