New Dawn - Interview @ gry.o2.pl

by Dhruin, 09:12

Polish site gry.o2.pl has an interview with Undead Society about their now canceled post-apoc project, New Dawn.  This was news to me but it isn't surprising to learn the project was too ambitious, however, they plan to pursue something easier to solidify their finances and come back to New Dawn later:

Klecha (Gry.o2.pl): Why did you cancel it? You did promise to release the demo.

Slawomir Szynkowski (Undead Society/EvoWare): There have been a lot of factors contributing to this decision. Firstly, it's the game engine. As time went by it became clear that the engine was not going to cope with such a huge project without ridiculously high system specifications. We just couldn't give up on some design elements, including graphics quality, because we believed it would hurt the game.

Secondly, we've had no secure financial support. We reached a point from which it was impossible to go on, unless we had some serious external financial aid. Even though we were optimistic, it became obvious that it is very hard to find support for such a game as ours, which in addition, is not competing with modern high-end RPG games.

We could either finish this kind of crippled game and disappoint our fans and ourselves, or suspend the whole thing, which we eventually did.

New Dawn - Demo Delayed

by Dhruin, 01:15

From the New Dawn site:

We regret to inform you that the highly anticipated playable New Dawn demo will not be available at the time we had planned it to be. Even though most of the works have been completed we are not fully satisfied with the results so the decision was mad to put back the release of the demo. We do our best to fulfill both your expectations and our concepts, that is why some additional work needs to be done. This is a busy but also an exciting time for us and we will continue to inform you about the development of the game.

New Dawn - Demo Coming

by Dhruin, 00:10

Well, in November, anyway.  Undead Society dropped us a line to say they are working on a demo of their post-apoc RPG, New Dawn.  Apparently the demo will have its own story rather than being pulled directly from the full game. I can't quote from the Flash, so head over to read about it yourself.

New Dawn - Render @ Official Site

by Dhruin, 23:10

Undead Society pointed out a new render for New Dawn at their site.  Since I can't link directly because of the Flash (head to the Gallery), here's the blurb they sent over:

Today appeard a next news at our official website: www.newdawn-game.com. We decided to show something about NPC and uncover a gardener. Although he isn't a very important NPC, he's a good example of the approach our team has towards such characters - even less significant ones are detailed and well-documented.

New Dawn - FAQ @ Official Site

by Dhruin, 23:52

Thanks to Lead Designer Paul Sasko for letting us know Undead Society has added a detailed FAQ about their party-based post-apoc RPG New Dawn to the site.  Questions were gathered from the media and this thread - here's a sample:

How big is the world of the game?

The world is divided into locations of up to 15 square km (5.8 mi?) each. Many types of surfaces, plants and animals which are going to featured in the game require such vast areas.

How are you going to combine fantasy and the postapocalyptic vision?

The game shows quite a special world after a great disaster. Human kind declined so tragically that superstitions and new religions took over people's minds. Evolution caused different populations to adapt to new conditions. Accordingly, there appeared some elements that resemble fantasy to a casual gamer. However, their existence is justified and well documented. The plot will explain many of the questions a player will dare to ask when playing the New Dawn.

New Dawn - Updated Website

by Dhruin, 20:34

You may not recall the Polish post-apoc project New Dawn but developer Undead Society has updated the website with a new Flash-y one offering English info.  As always, Flash is difficult to quote but the project offers both turn-based and realtime-with-pause combat, up to six party members and unusual features such as a smell skill and its own language in the gameworld.

There are no screenshots at the site, which probably highlights the current level of development, but there are some concept arts and renders and here's a snip from an earlier CRPG.ru interview to help set the scene:

Tell us, please, about New Dawn in general, so we can get acquainted with the project and prepare for further discussion.

New Dawn is a cRPG game which is set in the future. The world is recovering after a comet hit the Earth in 2029. As the plot is set a couple of hundred years after the disaster, the world has already had the chance to diversify significantly. In the game you can see elements from both post-apocalyptic and fantasy games. Along with new civilizations and ideologies a new history is being born and you won't find any old world's cities. All the settlements were started after the cataclysm when people started to set up new societies.

Main character's name is Seth. He lost his memory and is trying to discover his true identity. In his quest a player can gather a group of up to 6 characters. Combat can be either turn-based or real-time with a so-called active pause. So far we have been working on a PC Windows single player version both in Polish and English. We use TrueVision3D engine.
