Pyre - Big Update

by Silver, 01:03

Pyre recently received a big update which introduces a new gameplay mode and an extended soundtrack. Pyre is currently 25% off.

Free 'True Nightwing' Update Out Now!

Since the launch of Pyre back in July, we've been taking stock of all the wonderful response and feedback from players around the world, as well as getting busy figuring out what's next! By way of saying thank-you to everyone who's supported the game, we're pleased to announce a free update and bonus soundtrack, available now!

About the 'True Nightwing' Update
The centerpiece of our latest update is a new Campaign mode that's unlocked after you reach the end of the Campaign (if you've already finished the Campaign, it should be unlocked automatically).

Reminiscent of an 'Ironman' mode in other games, this new way to play really amps up the challenge, and emphasizes many of the unique aspects of Pyre's campaign -- notably in how the story has no 'Game-Over' state, and keeps moving forward, taking your choices and outcomes into account.

It's designed to enhance playing through the Campaign successive times, whether you want to visit your favorite characters again, or experience all the many millions of event combinations in a whole new way.

Pyre - Review @ Wccftech

by Hiddenx, 09:03

Wccftech has reviewed the Fantasy Sports RPG Pyre:

Pyre Review – A Fresh Take On Fantasy Sports That May Leave RPG Fans Feeling Burned

Pyre is a bit of a departure for developer Supergiant Games. The small 12-man studio was quick to establish a brand with their first two titles, Bastion and Transistor, which were both isometric RPGs with a focus on action, innovative mechanics, and gorgeous art. Supergiant’s third game builds on those acclaimed titles in some key ways, but also veers off into new and uncharted territory.

Make no mistake, Pyre has the look and sound of a Supergiant game, but its gameplay is a quirky mix of party-based RPG, sports game, and visual novel. That’s not an easy combo to pull off, so does Pyre further build upon Supergiant’s legacy, or burn it to the ground? Let’s find out!

[...]

Pyre is an admirable attempt to create a new hybrid -- part sports, part RPG -- but only one of the game’s halves is a true success. Surprisingly, that’s the sports half. Pyre’s world is an enticing one, it just isn’t conveyed in the best way. If you’re a sports game veteran willing to try something a bit different or somebody who mostly enjoyed past Supergiant games for their sumptuous audio and visuals, Pyre should light your fire. Unfortunately, those hoping for another full-bodied action-RPG experience similar to Bastion or Transistor may be left a bit cold.

Pyre - Review @ Gizorama

by Hiddenx, 19:12

Gizorama has reviewed the Indie RPG Pyre:

Beautiful Purgatory – Pyre Review

If I was cast into The Downside, condemned to perform the rites of Pyre, I think I’d have a pretty good time. It’s all adventures in a wagon with your mates and throwing a ball about. Supergiant Game’s latest title is yet another unique genre hopping game that explores a twisted new world of lore, ritual, and redemption. You’re a ‘Reader’, an oddity and an outlaw in the world of the commonwealth, and so you find yourself exiled in the Downside. Able to read the Book of Rites handed down by the Scribes, you help a ragtag group of masked wanderers to participate in a series of trails known as the rites, to prove themselves worthy and ultimately gain their freedom.

[...]

Pyre is a beautiful and unique party based RPG. Supergiant Games have shown time and time again that they’re happy to do their own thing in the world of gaming, and as a result Pyre is clearly the game that they wanted to make, no compromises. It’s not the flowing narrative of Bastion or Transistor, instead it’s the choices you make that define your experience.

Pyre - Review @ RPGFan

by Hiddenx, 19:42

RPGFan has reviewed the party-based RPG Pyre:

Pyre

Pyre is the third gorgeous concoction to come out of Supergiant Games, a small studio known for two other hit titles, Bastion and Transistor. This third project maintains the same sense of flair, oozing style in a unique and fascinating world. Unlike its brethren, which relied heavily on one or two core characters and the environment for cues, Pyre world-builds through a tome of text delivered piecemeal and its exceptional cast of characters. I emphasize the lore because that seems to be what Supergiant Games does best, and that remains true here. While it is a beautiful and fun experience, Pyre suffers from issues Bastion and Transistor didn't have, such as pacing and simple gameplay.

I enjoyed my time with Pyre; I'm glad I played it. The world inspires thought and curiosity, and I'm left with something to mentally chew on for a while. I already miss my new friends. Due to the "check box" nature of getting to know characters and building relationships, I have considered giving it another go with vastly different decisions, but I think I got what I needed out of this. I also wish the history wasn't delivered through chronologically discordant segments of text. Initially, the game feels like a lore dump and there's a lot to know if you want to dive in. I had difficulty wrapping my head around the world's history, and it seemed relevant. The sports matches are fun, but lack the depth or intensity I think the developers were trying to accomplish. I could easily see this being the type of game some people will adore and obsess over, while others will struggle to finish. If what I've described piques your curiosity and you're a sucker for well-written characters and inspiring worlds, this is likely worth a go.

Pyre - Review @ Slant Magazine

by Hiddenx, 09:42

The Slant Magazine has reviewed the Sport RPG Pyre:

Pyre

Don't let its nearly 200-page rulebook fool you: Pyre isn't some burdensome, overly complicated action RPG. If anything, its sports-like combat favors loose experimentation and quick thinking, not rigid theorycrafting and preplanned plays. The length of its Book of Rites, an illuminated manuscript with sparkling calligraphy and pictures, stems from all of the details that fill it out. The book is a labor of love, not a litany of laws, and the majority of its pages present enjoyable (and entirely optional) elaborations on the various arenas, locations, and competitors. In many ways, this applies to the game itself, which, like Bastion and Transistor before it, crams colorful, technical details into every hand-drawn frame.

Pyre isn't uncomplicated, but the precision that Supergiant Games brings to the project makes the finished project seem effortless. There are some obvious inspirations behind the choose-your-own-adventure wagoneering; the three-on-three rituals in which players must find a way to plunge a celestial orb into the other team's pyre (or goal) calls to mind the over-the-top dodgeball of Stikbold! But Pyre uses familiarity only as a touchstone. The remainder of the game is spent ensuring that it feels wholly unique and, more importantly when it comes to gameplay, well-balanced: a fast-moving cur may be able to double- or triple-jump around foes but has a tiny aura with which to block opponents; an equally swift, slithering wyrm can't jump but can lay down a watery aura trail that he can whip back across at any point.

Pyre - Reviews

by Hiddenx, 20:30

Here are the first reviews for for the party-based RPG Pyre that will be released tomorrow:

EuroGamer:

Dazzling and mysterious, this ambitious party-based RPG is a masterpiece.

Kotaku:

Pyre is interesting enough to play multiple times, but it can also be played just as a one-on-one sport. In the game’s versus mode, which pits you against either an AI opponent or against a friend on your couch. In the story, there’s a lot of narrative pressure to do well in the rites. Against another person, I was a bit freer to just enjoy banishing my enemies, or passing the ball down the court, or flying over an aura blast. When I played against Kotaku editor-in-chief Stephen Totilo in the office, he banished me just as I was about to score on him and I shouted, “you motherfucker.” Pyre is good in many ways. It’s even good enough that it made me call my boss a motherfucker.

GameSpew:

I wouldn’t be surprised if we never see another game quite like Pyre, and that’s perfectly okay. Simply describing its spectacularly outlandish battle system doesn’t do it justice; upon playing it, it doesn’t take long to realise that it works – and that it works incredibly well. Pair that with a wonderful cast of characters, a riveting story, and enthralling music and visuals, and you have nothing short of a compelling game that demands your time and attention. If you are at all curious about Pyre – and you should be – then you owe it to yourself to check this one out.

The Verge:

Pyre is a mishmash of a game. Its world is culled from multiple influences, and the core of the experience feels like two very different titles stuck together. But, as with Supergiant’s past work, it all comes together in a very satisfying way. It’s an adventure where it only feels natural that you’d spend as much time poring over ancient books as you do throwing a magic orb around an arena, and I enjoyed chatting with swamp witches almost as much as I did turning them into powerful warriors. I may not know how to say “boomshakalaka” in harpy, but I know what it feels like to dunk over a massive demon.
