Review:

SaGa Frontier is a game whose original release could best be described as unfortunate. It came not long after Final Fantasy VII had made many new players interested in RPGs, only to give them a game that was almost the exact polar opposite of what FF7 was: non-linear, obtuse, story-light, and filled with gameplay elements that defied genre norms. Many who bought SaGa Frontier on the Squaresoft name alone were blindsided by just how goddamned weird it was when all they wanted was another FF7. The backlash to Frontier would taint the SaGa series’ reputation in the West for years as impenetrable trash. Yet there were still folks who carried the torch for SaGa Frontier, embracing its obliqueness and brutality and singing its praises for years. Those people were no doubt elated when Square-Enix announced a SaGa Frontier remaster on modern platforms, eager to see their much-maligned favorite get a chance to shine once again.

SaGa Frontier Remastered - Review @ Toucharcade

'SaGa Frontier Remastered' Review – A Wonderful Hot Mess, Remastered

I don’t know what has been in the water at Square Enix the last few years, but I’m happy for it. The 8-bit and 16-bit Final Fantasy games can only be re-released and/or remade so many times, I suppose. We’ve received localizations of classic games I never thought we would see like Romancing SaGa 2 and Romancing SaGa 3. We’ve seen the latest SaGa, SaGa Scarlet Grace, get a release on new platforms and in new regions. Even the classic Game Boy games that kicked off the SaGa series (unbeknownst to those of us in the West at the time) got reissued on the Nintendo Switch. And now things come full circle, after a fashion. SaGa Frontier Remastered ($24.99) sees the very first game in the series that was localized under its original title make a return, hopefully to a warmer reception than last time.

What happened last time? Well, it’s complicated. To start with, SaGa Frontier is a SaGa game, with all that implies. It’s a very, very quirky series by nature, often confusing players with esoteric rules and non-standard systems. SaGa Frontier was the seventh game in the series, and as such it was built with the idea that the players would have a basic understanding of the off-beat nature that characterized SaGa. It’s considerably harder to get into than almost all of its predecessors. Western players didn’t have that context, of course. We missed out on the three Romancing SaGa games, and while the Game Boy games had their devotees they were also a bit closer to a familiar JRPG structure.

SaGa Frontier Remastered - Review @ We Got This Covered

by Hiddenx, 18:06

We Got This Covered reviewed SaGa Frontier Remastered:

SaGa Frontier Remastered Review

Square Enix’s mid-to-late 1990’s output is one of the strongest runs by a single publisher I can remember. From the iconic Final Fantasy releases to cult hits such as Parasite Eve and Brave Fencer Musashi, it seemed like top-notch titles were dropping every few months. Smack dab in the middle of that was the PSX debut of the SaGa franchise. Akitoshia Kawazu’s cult series flourished in Japan but has struggled to find an audience here in North America. Perhaps sensing there was still untapped potential, the series is being born anew with the release of SaGa Frontier Remastered.

Originally released after Final Fantasy VII blew up the charts, SaGa Frontier must have been quite the surprise for those unaware of its origins. Square chose to follow up its mega-smash with an esoteric, brutally uncompromising RPG that was unlike anything else on the market. It’s a game that refuses to hold your hand, hardly explains any of the complicated systems in it, and can be soul-crushingly tough if the wrong decisions are made. I avoided it when it first came out, due to both my young age and the mediocre reviews it garnered. Having now played through it, I can safely say that its unique take on the genre is still worth experiencing today.

20 years later, and SaGa Frontier Remastered is just as off-beat and original as it was upon release. The combat engine is convoluted and difficult to understand, but incredibly enjoyable once you put the work into it, and the open-world design is remarkably well done. To top it off, Square Enix has done an excellent job of bringing the title into the modern era. From the beautiful sprite work to the added extra content, the studio has added plenty of content to an already cherished game. There are still issues to be had — particularly how poorly explained some of the mechanics can be — but it’s still a great release that newcomers and veterans alike should be able to enjoy. We can only hope this will lead to later installments in the series getting the same excellent treatment.
