Shadow Realms - More Game Details
In-case you were interested in what BioWare's cancelled RPG game Shadow Realms was all about then head over to a site called UnSeen64 who unreleased information.
Shadow Realms was a cancelled online action RPG in development at BioWare Austin. It was originally scheduled for release in fall 2015 exclusively on PC with no immediate plans for a console port. The title’s cancellation was announced on February 9, 2015. However, thanks to multiple anonymous contributors related to the project, we have been able to preserve a plethora of insider information about it that was never disclosed by BioWare officially.
It was a game conceived by BioWare Austin in late 2013 as a 4 v 1 online multiplayer experience; with full production commencing by early 2014. According to one former employee of the company, its realization long preceded the announcement of other 4 v 1 titles, such as Evolve. Despite countless comparisons between the two by the press and consumers alike, our source emphasised that two were thought of completely independently of one another.

Shadow Realms - Cancelling Helped SWTOR
MMO-Play is the next site to respond to BioWare cancelling Shadow Realms, and the sit goes on tio say the cancellation helped Star Wars: The Old Republic.
When BioWare decided to get into the arena of mmorpg games, they did so in a major way with the release of Star Wars: The Old Republic. While the online game was an immediate hit, it did fade somewhat in the months after launch. BioWare eventually turned their eye to creating another mmo, Shadow Realms, that was vastly different in design and tone from SWTOR and their other intellectual properties. This new game was a combination of high magic, technology, and creepy mythology and had some intriguing features. All that came to naught when BioWare decided to cancel development of the game. While some gamers were sad to see this result, it could have a silver lining. Let's examine why cancelling Shadow Realms helps Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Shadow Realms - Canceled By BioWare
Seems the rumors from last year were right about development trouble for Shadow Realms as BioWare has announced today the game is now cancelled.
Today I’m sharing some important news about Shadow Realms and our BioWare Austin studio. We’ve made the decision to not move forward with development of Shadow Realms. We fully recognize that this news is disappointing to some of our fans, so I want to explain more behind this decision.
While the team did amazing work on the game concept and we got lots of great feedback from our fans at events and through other game testing, right now there are other projects for the team to work on within the BioWare studios for the coming year and beyond. We’ve got an incredibly talented team here at the Austin studio, and they are excited and already deep on new projects within the BioWare family, ones that will make some great BioWare games even better.
These include additional ongoing enhancements to the award-winning Dragon Age: Inquisition, as well as the next game in the Mass Effect series and other new IP.
But the biggest focus for our team in BioWare Austin will be on Star Wars™: The Old Republic™. As every Star Wars™ fan knows, this is a massive year in the Star Wars universe. We have some great plans for expanding this epic game this year, and look forward to sharing the news about those plans with our players in the coming weeks.
For all the people that registered for the Shadow Realms Closed Alpha, we’re working on a way to say thank-you for signing up. To all those players that gave us feedback at Gamescom and PAX, and those that shared their thoughts and impressions in the past months, we thank you for being part of the conversation.

Shadow Realms - Possibly Rebooted @ Kotaku
It has been a few months since any news of Bioware's latest game Shadow Realms has been posted, and now it seems the game is being redone. Kotaku has the information.
Shadow Realms, last year's surprise announcement from BioWare Austin, is going through big changes and may have been totally rebooted, sources tell Kotaku.
That Austin branch of BioWare, best known for developing the MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic, originally unveiled Shadow Realms as an online 4 vs. 1 action-role-playing game that would be released episodically beginning in 2015. Although the studio didn't officially say anything about pricing, many believed that the game would be free-to-play.
But things have changed. Two industry sources say they heard Shadow Realms was cancelled, but a third, reliable source familiar with goings-on at BioWare Austin says the game was overhauled in late October and will now have a full campaign. Though some details may be in flux, early plans for Shadow Realms now peg it as a 2017 release for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, according to that source.

In this interview, Shadowrealms Senior Producer Dallas Dickinson discusses the different co-op and single player elements of the game, the character customization options, and the differences between Bioware’s title and another upcoming 4 vs. 1 experience, Evolve. He also describes the unofficial “no controllers” rule the development team is using, and how the action-oriented game is being designed as “a really good mouse and keyboard experience.”

Shadow Realms - Preview @ Hardcore Gamer
Hardcore Gamer has a new preview from Pax Prime 2014 for Shadow Realms. The articles writer Geoff Thew calls it one of Bioware’s most engrossing game.
Between versus multiplayer, episodic storytelling and a contemporary setting, Bioware is trying out a lot of things they’ve never done before with Shadow Realms. Indeed, no one has ever attempted anything quite like this. It’s exciting to see a big developer try something so new, but it’s also a little worrying. I’ve talked before about how episodic stories are inherently different from contiguous ones, and it remains to be seen if Bioware’s writers will be able to make that leap. There’s also the question of multiplayer balance. It may be that I just suck at playing the Shadowlord, but it seems right now that heroes have a distinct advantage. Asymmetrical balance is tricky, and at the moment Shadow Realms can’t really compare to the fine-tuning of Evolve. If Bioware can pull this off, though, it could be the studio’s most unique and engrossing game to date.

Shadow Realms - Preview @ Worldsfactory
Worldsfactory had a chance to play an early version of Bioware's new Co-op online RPG Shadow Realms, and shared their opinion of the game online in a new preview.
Oddly enough, the dungeon we were able to try didn’t feel like “modern fantasy” at all, but that’s because it was set into the parallel world of Embra, which is where magic (and monsters) roams freely. Also, there wasn’t really any story in what we played and given that Bioware always produced story-heavy games, you might be puzzled about Shadow Realms; however, it seems like story will be delivered episodically and mostly relegated to “solo instances”.
This is quite perplexing, as most games are now trying to weave story into gameplay as much as possible, while Bioware appears to be doing the exact opposite with Shadow Realms.
As you probably have deduced by now, we already have a few doubts about Shadow Realms as a whole, but ultimately we had fun playing, which is very good news for a game still in Pre-Alpha. Bioware told us that a few lucky gamers will be entering the Closed Alpha later this year, and hopefully the developer will listening carefully to their feedback in order to polish and tweak the game wherever needed.
Shadow Realms will release on PC some time in 2015, and I reckon there’s a good chance we’ll see it on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One too at some point (Bioware already said that there’s no reason why it couldn’t be on consoles later).

Shadow Realms - Preview @ Eurogamer
Robert Purchese of Eurogamer has a new preview of Bioware's new online Co-Op game Shadow Realm, and calls it a a pleasant surprise.
What EA and BioWare have in Shadow Realms is far more competent, far more compelling, than the game's announcement had me believe. It's not a traditional BioWare experience but then what these days is? Multiplayer crept into Mass Effect 3 and now it's in Dragon Age: Inquisition; and on the other side of the fence storied single-player content set SWTOR apart, and will be ably implemented in Shadow Realms by a well practised team.
But do people really want storytelling in their action-RPG? And can that modern day setting ever be as visually striking as science fiction or high fantasy? There are questions Shadow Realms still has to answer, but BioWare has time, and if the promise of transparency is to be believed, perhaps we won't have long to find out.

Shadow Realms - Preview @ Ausgamers
Ausgamers has a new hands-on preview of Bioware's new online Co-op game Shadow Realms after posting the interview from last week. So read on if you're interested.
Four-versus-one asymmetrical multiplayer is, seemingly, the new sub-genre on the block, with Evolve leading the charge in the shooter space, and Fable Legends rearing its Molyneux-less head to balance the action with a healthy dose of RPG elements. As of Gamescom 2014, BioWare unveiled its new secretive title, Shadow Realms, which turned out to be a 4v1 action-RPG that, at first glance, looked eerily similar in terms of concept to Fable Legends. After sitting through a short behind-closed-doors presentation at the event and playing a round as the coveted Shadowlord (the ‘1’ in the 4v1 offering) role under the tutelage of Studio Creative Director James Ohlen, it’s clear this pre-alpha product has a lot to offer.

Shadow Realms - Interview @ Dual Shockers
Dual Shockers posted a new video interview with Shadow Realms Creative DirectorJames Ohlen, and asked him a few questions about the game.
To the surprise of almost no one, considering the weeks of teasing, BioWare and Electronic Arts announced Shadow Realms at Gamescom, a 4 vs 1 online RPG set in a supernatural setting by Star Wars: The Old Republic’s studio BioWare Austin.
On the show floor we caught up with Creative Director James Ohlen, and asked him a few questions about the game, the inspiration behind it, its episodic nature, and the possibility of console ports down the line.
I also couldn’t resist the temptation to derail the discussion a bit on Star Wars: The Old Republic, especially considering that Ohlen covers the role of Creative Director there as well. Luckily, he didn’t seem to mind too much

Shadow Realms - Interview @ Ausgamers
Ausgamers interviewed BioWare Austin General Manager Jeff Hickman about their recently announced new online co-op game Shadow Realms.
AusGamers: Yeah, I got to play Shadowlord.
Jeff: F**k yeah. When you play the game, you go, ‘Oh, okay’. And you get that core slice that we’re showing without everything else. When people don’t do that it’s, like, okay, let me start from the beginning and try to get you to understand what we’re trying to do here. It’s a concept. My time is yours.AusGamers: Actually, on concept, what came first: was it the idea of 4v1 multiplayer, or was it the idea of wanting to do a co-op based RPG?
Jeff: I think there are a couple of things that came really fast on each other and… I try to think back, I mean, it’s been two years since we started talking about this game, and we’ve been in production for about a year and a half now, so it’s been a little while. The lore came first. Here’s what was going on. If you think back a bit and I think back to that me and James [Ohlen] and Gabe [Amatangelo] and Matt Romberg and a couple of other people, we have a lot of the same thoughts and experiences, we’re all kind of nerdy D&D guys, we grew up in the 80s playing games, and we’ve come off Star Wars: The Old Republic and we’re just getting ready to launch the free-to-play aspect and we’re saying, ‘What’s next?’ We’ve got guys on this team who’ve been working on Star Wars: The Old Republic for seven years. They love the game, but they’re going crazy, to be frank.
AusGamers: They want something new.
Jeff: Yeah. What’s new? How do we get the studio moving forward? We have an opportunity to do something kind of cool and neat. At the time, some of us were playing first-edition D&D again, literally.
AusGamers: Wow.
Jeff: It’s actually the only D&D that I’ll play, just because it’s very nostalgic to me. I play with my kids. We’re reading some very… so we’re all readers, and I don’t know if you’re a reader, but if you’re a reader who has friends who are readers, you’re always kind of swapping books. At the time, we were all reading a similar book. So it’s like, here’s this book we’re reading, and also we game inside the studio, so we’ve got a couple of tabletop war games we play. So that’s our life, it’s what we do. We play games.

Shadow Realms - Might Be F2P on Release
Kotaku has news that Bioware's online Co-op game Shadow Realms might be F2P on release. Seems they learned their lesson after the last MMO they launched.
Specifics haven’t been decided yet, but it’s pretty evident that BioWare will be looking at non-traditional monetisation models for its new online game, Shadow Realms - whether that’s full free-to-play or something closer to an episodic model.
“We are not ready to talk about specifics, but I’ll talk about some things,” said BioWare Austin’s General Manager Jeff Hickman, when we spoke about Shadow Realms at Gamescom. “When we look at games like this the very first thing that we do is think about the passion that we have for building whatever the game is. We don’t go, what could make us money at EA? We want players to feel like it’s a fun game that they love to play, and they are glad to pay for it, in whatever way. Then we’ll worry about what the monetisation is.”
