The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie - Review

The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie Review

Overview
When someone talks about a piece of media being basically impenetrable to newcomers, usually it involves a movie or book that is part of a long running series. That generally doesn’t happen when it comes to video games but if there was ever a game that would serve as the benchmark for continuous storytelling, it is The Legend of Heroes. For the most part, previous entries in the franchise may have been a way to step into the series in some regard but now with The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie all of that comes to a head in one final hurrah for a storyline that has spanned over the course of six large RPGs. Centering itself solely as an RPG for fans that have seen what the Cold Steel and Crossbell series has had to offer, does this culmination serve as a worthwhile send off to this immense cast of characters?

[...]

Overall
The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie serves as a solid conclusion to a long running series of games that is bursting at the seams with characters and enjoyable moments that longtime fans of the games will enjoy. It is completely impenetrable to those who have yet to play any game in the series but that doesn’t stop this lengthy RPG from doing what it does best, even if it takes quite a bit of time to get there with an overarching story and unique mechanic that don’t quite live up to expectations.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie review

When it comes to RPGs, there’s no other series that can compare to the Trails games when it comes to universe building. By telling a story that spans multiple games, Falcom have created a fantastic world that is almost impenetrable for newcomers but beloved by those dedicated fans who have played hundreds of hours of these RPGs. Never had this divide been more apparent than with The Legends of Heroes: Trails into Reverie, which is a fantastic game that frankly I am not the target audience for.

Essentially Trails into Reverie is a continuation and ending of two different story arcs, the Crossbell arc (made up of the recently released Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure) and the Cold Steel arc. That’s six massive games that you pretty much need to have completed to fully enjoy the newest entry in the series, or you’ll be as lost as I was thanks to my lack of Cold Steel experience. I at least recognised Lloyd and the other SSS members though, so at least that’s something.

Recognising a few characters in a game with this many people in every scene is simply not enough, especially once you leave the first story route focused on Lloyd and his Crossbell friends. From start to finish big reveals were lost on me, but if you’re up on your Trails then this game is like Avengers: Endgame on steroids. Even without that required knowledge though, Trails Into Reverie is an epic tale with sensational turn based combat.

[...]

The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie is clearly an epic RPG set in a deep and interesting universe, but unless you’ve played through at least six massive games before this one you won’t really understand what’s going on. Even if you’re a Trails veteran though I wouldn’t recommend you play the Switch version, and instead find another way to enjoy this brilliant and much anticipated game.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie - Review

by Hiddenx, 05:21

RPG Site has reviewed The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie:

The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie Review

This review will mention minor spoilers from The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV and Trails to Azure, as well as general discussion of the story premise of Trails into Reverie

More than any other game in the series thus far, The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie is not at all a game for series newcomers. That's allowed, of course, but it makes it somewhat tricky to write about.

The majority of people reading this review likely already know the ins and outs and nitty-gritty details, but for the gap of individuals who don't, Trails into Reverie is the tenth mainline entry of the Trails series, which started all the way back in 2004 with the release of Trails in the Sky in Japan.  Without going into the complete history of the series, each game comprises one long continuous narrative that is still ongoing.

While the specific sub-arcs have shifted perspective and setting, each individual entry is referenced in subsequent games with the assumption that the player is aware of past events, having ostensibly played them. Outside of the recommendation of starting from the beginning and playing in sequence, certain entries are better suited as entry points than others -- most notably either with the recently localized Trails from Zero or with Trails of Cold Steel, as each introduces a new primary cast with a new part of the overall setting.

[...]

As someone who is a bit of a lapsed fan of the Trails series and greatly enjoyed the recently localized Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure, I was partially hoping to have Reverie be the game to reignite that spark I used to have for this series. Instead, after completing Trails into Reverie, I find myself mostly grateful to move onto brighter pastures after Reverie ended up spending most of its run-time spinning its wheels, while its few contributions to the overall series largely fell flat.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie - Release Day

by Hiddenx, 05:24

The J-RPG The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie will be released today:

The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie

The empires of Zemuria have narrowly managed to escape the Great Twilight, a curse that threatened to end the world, thanks to the valiant efforts of those known as heroes. This has resulted in a ripple effect of events that hurtles the series toward its thrilling conclusion.
Following the Great Twilight calamity, the three protagonists across the Zemurian continent find themselves drawn together by the thread of fate.

Some are heroes, others are liberators, and yet others live as hermits. The cross-story gameplay system allows players to switch between three different characters, depicting the story from separate perspectives within the same timeline.

What will the people of Crossbell think of their newfound independence? What will become of an empire which has lost one of its mighty limbs? And what of Ouroboros’ leader, the Grandmaster, and his ominous Eternal Regression Plan?

***

What destinies await these three fateful figures? Use the Trails to Walk system to switch between Rean Schwarzer, Lloyd Bannings, and the masked figure "C", and determine the fates of key characters and locations within Zemuria. Dive into refined tactical combat with new features such as United Front, and discover new allies and challenges within the halls of the True Reverie Corridor!

About

Where one trail ends, another begins...

The intertwining fates of three figures in Zemuria will be decided in this climactic chapter of The Legend of Heroes series! Follow the footsteps of the war hero Rean Schwarzer, the liberator Lloyd Bannings, and the masked enigma "C", and switch between each of their paths freely with the Trails to Walk system.

- Lloyd Bannings, leader of the Crossbell Police Department’s Special Support Section, finds himself fighting for his city's freedom once again after Crossbell's independence celebrations are interrupted by the sudden reappearance of an old threat.

- Following the events of the Great Twilight, Erebonian hero Rean Schwarzer and his students return to life at the branch campus. However, this fleeting peace is disturbed by the emergence of a new threat.

- When the former governor general of Crossbell suddenly returns and lays claim to the city state, four figures carry out a secret mission to investigate his actions. Their leader is "C," a masked individual who seems to be using the same codename as the leader of the Imperial Liberation Front. But to what end?

The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie - Review

RPGFan reviewed The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie:

The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie

After nearly burning myself out on Trails of Cold Steel IV, I wasn't sure what to expect, but Trails into Reverie sparked my fondness for the series all over again.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie is a challenging game to review, but not because it’s terrible. Far from it! But given how deeply established the lore of The Legend of Heroes: Trails series is and the built-in fanbase the game already has, it’s challenging to pin down my thoughts succinctly. Plus, to avoid spoilers, there are many late-game plot reveals I can’t discuss. Trails into Reverie serves as an excellent epilogue to both the Crossbell duology of Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure, as well as for the four Trails of Cold Steel games that precede it, all while simultaneously being an excellent prelude to adventures yet to be seen. In that regard, this game is a resounding success!

[...]

Pros
Excellent epilogue to two compelling The Legend of Heroes: Trails story arcs, entertaining battle system, wealth of content to uncover, amazing music.

Cons
Pacing can interrupt story immersion, some aspects of the True Reverie Corridor aren't as memorable or engaging as others, suffers from character bloat, sporadic voice acting in story scenes.

Bottom Line
The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie is a solid addition to the series, serving as an excellent epilogue to the Crossbell and Erebonian arcs.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie Review

One More Wishy with Mishy

It’s been a busy period for The Legend of Heroes fans in the west as NIS America works hard to catch up on Nihon Falcom’s series. After finally getting the two games in the series’s Crossbell saga, western RPGamers are now able to move onto the capstone that is The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie. The game acts as a highly satisfying, somewhat fanservicey, epilogue to both the Trails of Cold Steel saga and the Crossbell duology. While some of the deeper world-building feels increasingly convoluted, and it’s time for the series to move on to new pastures, it is great to have one final episode of glory with most of the cast as the game celebrates the series’s combat evolution and at least partially ties up some of its numerous unresolved plot points.

[...]

With its placement as a capstone on the titles that have come before, The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie is very much one for the fans. It’s largely a celebration of all that’s come before it, both narratively and in its combat, and ultimately successful for doing so. It’s nature means Trails into Reverie is lacking some of the fun investigative parts that have helped players inhabit the world, but being able to see all of the main characters interact again is a pleasure, and it once again pulls off an impressive emotional finale. With all that said and done, it’s definitely time the series headed for new pastures and hopefully western fans won’t have too long to wait before finding out where it goes in Kuro no Kiseki.
