The Metronomicon - Review @ Gaming Age

by Hiddenx, 10:05

Gaming Age has reviewed the Rythm RPG The Metronomicon:

The Metronomicon: Slay the Dance Floor review for PS4, Xbox One, PC

Sometimes the marrying of two distinct game genres just works, and I think The Metronomicon: Slay the Dance Floor, is a pretty great example of that. Billed as a “Rhythm-RPG”, Metronomicon takes the combat mechanics of popular RPG titles like Final Fantasy, and combines that with a control method akin to Dance Dance Revolution or PaRappa the Rapper. Featuring a whole host of indie and chiptune musical tracks, it’s a surprisingly robust indie release on Xbox One, PS4, and PC that I definitely think is worth checking out.

The only other issue I had was that I felt like the UI could be improved just a bit. Some of the messages were a little small and difficult to read, which is likely less of an issue on the PC with a monitor. But a bigger issue with the UI, at least for me, was being able to tell what status effects were currently benefiting or plaguing my team, and what element the enemy I was fighting was strong against. It certainly isn’t impossible to see these things, but the icons could be bigger, and maybe positioned a little closer to the scrolling inputs so the player doesn’t need to take their eyes off the action as often.

Still, The Metronomicon: Slay the Dance Floor went from being a game that wasn’t on my radar, to being one of the more engrossing blends of video game mechanics I’ve played all year long. The stellar soundtrack combined with a solid base of RPG trappings makes for a really enjoyable time, and something that I doubt many developers could stick the landing on as well as Akupara Games and PUUBA have done here.

The Metronomicon - Review @ New Game Network

by Hiddenx, 00:18

NGN has reviewed the Rythm RPG The Metronomicon:

The Metronomicon Review

Before games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band created a more standard template for rhythm games, it’s easy to forget that the genre’s early days often ventured into more quirky territory. Numerous Japanese developers would often attach intentionally ridiculous window dressing and stories like in Space Channel 5 or Elite Beat Agents, Even PaRappa the Rapper, the game most commonly labeled as the genre’s proper debut, revolved around a paper-thin dog rapping with onions to woo a flower.

While I wouldn’t say that developer Puuba’s latest title, The Metronomicon, tries to be as unabashedly weird, its genuine mixture of note-matching gameplay and role-playing battles, complete with an actual plot set in a fantastical music-powered world, is refreshing in how unashamed it is to try something completely different. While the gaming industry is no stranger to having promising-sounding experiments turn out more flawed than fun, this is not the case. There’s a shocking amount of substance, polish, and well thought out elements contained within this indie title, and there’s little reason to pass it up if the premise interests you.

Score: 87% - Great

With an impressively novel and well-done approach to gameplay, as well as a great tracklist and campaign to back it up, The Metronomicon is one of the best rhythm games in recent memory.

The Metronomicon - Review @ WGTC

by Hiddenx, 22:06

We Got This Covered reviewed the Rythm RPG The Metronomicon:

The Metronomicon Review

When you think of rhythm games, you don’t usually think of RPGs. If you did, maybe the rhythm action genre would be in ruder health than it currently is. With The Metronomicon, L.A.-based indie studio Puuba is looking to try something new, bringing the fast action of the music experience together with the more careful and considered approach of an RPG.

The way the game is played is probably the best place to start when considering The Metronomicon, given that it’s a genuinely new concept. On the left of the screen, your four-character party stands below four individual music tracks. Arrows come down the tracks and in traditional rhythm game style, you need to press enough indicated inputs at the right time in order to trigger an attack. Once this is done, a cooldown period comes into play for that specific character so that you can’t just spam the same attack over and over. At this point, you can tap a button to switch to one of your other characters, picking up the beat and performing one of their actions in the same way.

Score: 4/5 - Great

The task of combining rhythm action and RPG gameplay styles is not one that many developers would have been able to pull off as well as Puuba have with The Metronomicon. As well as a stack of great jams and entertaining gameplay, there’s plenty of polish and enough depth here to keep you stepping back to the dance floor.

The Metronomicon - Review @ TechRaptor

by Hiddenx, 13:23

TechRaptor has reviewed the recently released Rythm RPG The Metronomicon:

The Metronomicon Review – The Dancing Queen is in Town

Combining RPG and music game elements isn’t the most original idea. Square Enix has put out two Theatherythm Final Fantasy games on the Nintendo 3DS that did it quite well. Looking on Steam, both Before the Echo and Crypt of the Necrodancer manage to fill this particular niche with style. Despite the competition, Puuba and Kasedo Games are the latest to test their skills on the dance floor with The Metronomicon. Is this game the new dancing queen, or does it trip and fall?

In a world where parties that attract monsters are springing up all over for an unknown reason, only one school is taking the fight to them. Studying from a tome known as the Metronomicon, a recent group of four graduates begins taking quests to discover what’s causing these parties and how to stop them. Along the way they’ll meet up with other people studying the parties, sneaking around and making trouble, or just being weird, and will have their ranks grow as they continue their quest. The Metronomicon‘s story is silly, which is exactly what I expected, but it’s well told. Part of the reason is thanks to some particularly good voice acting, with characters carrying their personalities through their lines well. The game is also funny, jokes about the character’s inability to keep quiet during long speeches made me chuckle, while an old character who goes out of his way to stay fit was entertaining. It’s not amazing, but the plot is consistent with the game’s tone and is good enough to keep me interested.

Score 9.0 - Amazing

Summary

The Metronomicon has a few faults, but nothing that stops it from being my favorite rhythm RPG mash-up to date. With a killer soundtrack, some fun mechanics, and quite a lot of content, The Metronomicon is a beat worth getting down to.

  • Solid RPG Mechanics
  • Funny Story with Good Voice Acting
  • Plenty to Do After Finishing The Story

Cons

  • Managing Multiple Currencies
  • A Bit Too Much Going On At Times
