Vikings - Wolves of Midgard - Review

by Hiddenx, 10:17

GameWatcher reviewed the action RPG Vikings - Wolves of Midgard:

Vikings - Wolves of Midgard Review

This is Ragnarok?

The new action RPG from Games Farm and Kalypso was preceded by some degree of hype, after all, it’s not often we get a Viking themed diablo style ARPG. Vikings: Wolves of Midgard pits players at the central events of Ragnarok, the Norse mythos version of the end of the world. As a warrior you must save your clan and the fight for the Asgardian gods to stem the tide of the Jotun onslaught upon Midgard.

[...]

Vikings: Wolves of Midgard just doesn’t do enough to stand out from games such as Diablo 3 or Path of Exile. While the core of the game is relatively solid and the amount of polish is nice. The game still falls into a classic trap of ARPG’s repetition. The core combat becomes boring very quickly and the level design, progression and enemy AI, flat out doesn’t do enough to keep the combat engaging.

Narratively, Ragnarok should be a great story, full of action, drama and betrayal. In its implementation in Vikings however, the game somehow manages to take a story about Giants, mythical creatures, Gods and the world ending and makes the entire thing an apathetic experience. At the end of the day, Vikings is good, it’s just not that good.

Vikings - Wolves of Midgard - Review

Broken Joysticks reviewed the action RPG Vikings - Wolves of Midgard:

Vikings: Wolves of Midgard – a Review

Hack and slash games have been a favorite genre of game of mine for a long time. From Devil May Cry to God of War, they are full of adrenaline fueled excitement and of course, plenty of action and enemies to slay. The newest to the genre is Vikings: Wolves of Midgard and while this may seem like a Diablo clone ready to be forgotten by time, there is a charm and fun to this game that should be given more than just a quick glance.

[...]

Overall, if you are looking for a fun hack and slash action RPG, this will satisfy your craving. Diablo fans will enjoy the gameplay and the Norse setting and story is fun, if not a bit cheesy in the dialogue at times. Try it out, but maybe wait for a sale to pick it up.Unless you are a huge fan of this genre of game, it may be too repetitive and too buggy to warrant buying it at full price.

Vikings - Wolves of Midgard - Review

Worthplaying has reviewed the Hack'n'Slash RPG Vikings - Wolves of Midgard:

PC Review - 'Vikings: Wolves of Midgard'

Norse mythology has been a favorite topic of video games for quite some time now. Even without the recent Marvel movies, the games have gotten many players familiar with the ideas of Valhalla and Ragnarok as well as some of the major characters, like Odin and frost giants. Vikings: Wolves of Midgard is the latest game to take on the Norse theme, placing it in the framework of an isometric action RPG. It isn't perfect, but it's a solid game.

The plot concerns the constant battle between the Norse gods that leaves Asgard rather unstable. Sensing an opportunity, the Jotan awaken the frost giants and coax them into a war with the gods that will likely bring about Ragnarok. Caught in the middle of this is the new chieftain of the Ulfung tribe, who earned the position after an invasion left the previous chieftain dead. Ordained by prophecy, the new chieftain seeks revenge against the Jotan to hopefully stop Ragnarok from occurring.

[...]

In the end, Vikings: Wolves of Midgard is good. It retains most of what makes the genre so appealing, and the other changes, like environmental dangers, amplify the formula instead of watering it down. It doesn't move the genre forward, though, and the lack of a custom preset combined with spotty performance on middle-of-the-road hardware will make some people see this as rather unpolished. For those who want something new in the genre, Vikings is worth a shot.

Vikings - Wolves of Midgard - Combat Trailer

by Silver, 05:52

@PCGamesN noticed a combat trailer for Vikings - Wolves of Midgard.

loading...

Taking footage from the latest build of their Norse hack and slash, Kalypso Media have cut together a new combat trailer for Vikings - Wolves of Midgard. Set following the dreadful battle of Ragnarok, Vikings - Wolves of Midgard has players fighting against fearsome frost giants and undead creatures as they try to keep their village alive during the cold of Fimbulwinter.

As either a Viking warrior or shieldmaiden, Vikings - Wolves of Midgard can have players team up in online co-op to destroy the vile beasts that threaten to destroy what’s left of your homeland. Killing enemies grants you blood, which you can sacrifice at special altars to gain powers from the gods. It’s all suitably metal, as you can wield ridiculously sized axes, hammers and swords to cut pig demons and trolls in half.

Vikings - Wolves of Midgard - Hands-On Preview

by Hiddenx, 11:46

WCCF Tech has previewed the Action RPG Vikings - Wolves of Midgard:

Vikings: Wolves of Midgard Hands-on Preview – Unleashing Hell

[...]
Developed by Slovakian studio Games Farm (known for Air Conflicts) and published by Kalypso Media of Tropico fame, Vikings: Wolves of Midgard is slated for an early 2017 release on the PC, PS4 and Xbox One. It’s also not the usual type of game you’d expect from either the developer or publisher. Straying from preferred genres always has the potential to go wrong. However, a fresh perspective can also lead to surprising results. A perfect example of this is Creative Assembly with Alien: Isolation.

[...]

I should repeat the fact that I took one thing away from Vikings. More than any other aspect, this is possibly the most intriguing and satisfying combat system I’ve encountered in an ARPG for quite a number of years. In just 35 minutes, it’s managed to grip me more than Diablo III ever did. It will feature New Game+ as well as an alternative game mode that focuses primarily on combat, something that will benefit the game greatly.
