Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim - Review at Techraptor

by Myrthos, 18:01

Techraptor reviewed Ys Vi: The Ark of Napishtim awarding it a score of 8/10.

From a standpoint of the story, there really isn’t anything special about it. You’ll enjoy some of the recurring characters, along with the lore drops here and there if you’re a fan of the series, but considering that Ys V hasn’t been officially released in the west and probably never will, it’s safe to say that if you’re planning to play Ys VI for the story, you might want to look elsewhere (in that case, I’d recommend XSEED’s other recently released PC Falcom title, The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky). That’s not to say that the story is horrible, it just doesn’t do much. For the majority of the story you are tracking the pieces of a broken mirror, and it’s only at the very tail-end of the game that anything resembling an earth-shattering event occurs.

Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim - Review @ COG

by Couchpotato, 05:21

A new review for Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim was published on a site called Canadian Online Gamers who gave the game a final score score of 82/100. Not bad at all.

Unlike the PS2 version of Ys VI, this PC release, like its PSP counterpart, does not include voice acting. As result, being able to read is extremely important as there are moments in the game where you must interact with other NPCs to discover where your next destination is. While the sound effects aren’t something to truly boast about, the music on the other hand is superb. Whether you’re in a battle, or just passing by a town, the music changes to incorporate the perfect sounds to get you in the right mood. Whatever music starts playing, you know when it’s one to be happy, sad, or to get ready for battle.

Ys VI still has its original charm and classic elements to make it a timeless game. It’s a simple and not overly complicated action RPG which makes it an easy game to experience and love. While its simplicity and common RPG elements does not make it stand out excessively from its competitors, it stays in its safe zone and continues its formula. With the new features available exclusive to this PC release, it has something in store for fans of the game to appreciate and also new comers to experience. If you’re in need for a simple and enjoyable RPG full of exploration and loveable characters, look no further.

Originally the first 3D entry in Nihon Falcom’s acclaimed Ys series, Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim delivers a storyline rich with memorable characters and themes on top of engaging hack-and-slash action RPG gameplay that would later go on to influence other Ys games, setting the foundation that series favorites Ys: The Oath in Felghana and Ys Origin were built upon. In addition to a brand new translation, high-resolution graphics, full USB controller support, and true widescreen gameplay, this PC version also introduces the ability to warp to any checkpoint previously encountered, as well as an optional “Catastrophe Mode” in which healing items can’t be purchased or stored and are instead used automatically on pickup. As a bonus, all copies of the game purchased through Steam and GOG.com include downloadable high-resolution art assets originally offered by Nihon Falcom through an exclusive (and very much out-of-print) Japanese fan disc.

Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim - Localization Blog #2

by Couchpotato, 05:18

Brittany the Production Coordinator at XSEED Games posted a new Tumblr blog about translating, and Localizing Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim for English gamers.

This is Brittany, Production Coordinator at XSEED Games. I was the editor and graphic text monkey for the PC version of Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim. I normally also do Steam achievements for our games (and my early work was…something, let’s be real here), but the honor this time fell to our extremely dedicated in-house tester, Danielle.

I thought I’d take this time to talk about my relationship with Ys. My first real interaction with the series was shortly after I’d started at XSEED as a lowly prisoner intern with Ys: The Oath in Felghana. XSEED as a whole was new to Steam and, to be quite honest, I was not a PC gamer. I definitely wasn’t into high-speed action RPGs, either. I was asked to test the title after being given a brief run of what Ys was (“Red-haired guy goes on lots of adventures”). Everyone was excited.

Except for me.

I hated it! Oh, man, did I hate playing Oath in Felghana at first. Like said, I wasn’t into action RPGS—I was into turn-based battles or slow, methodical strategy games. I didn’t know enough about Ys to really enjoy the characters or world, I never was big on the whole “silent protagonist” thing, and I kept dying! Death, death, death! Death at every corner! My co-worker had added an actual achievement for dying because he kept telling me that was half the fun of Ys, but I was just getting frustrated instead.
