Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA - Delayed again

by Hiddenx, 00:10

Henriquejr spotted on PC gamer that Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA will be postponed again:

Ys 8: Lacrimosa of Dana's PC release delayed indefinitely because of performance woes

Publisher NIS America is bringing another developer on board to optimise the PC version.

Ys 8: Lacrimosa of Dana's PC port has been delayed indefinitely, just 10 days after it was given a concrete release date of January 30. The game is suffering from massive framerate drops in certain sections, and publisher NIS America is bringing in a new developer to sort it out.

It's disappointing, especially since the game has already been delayed by a few months because of localisation problems. NIS America said all of its PC builds had suffered from "low framerate issues and memory leak problems" but admitted that it "underestimated the severity" of the issues. It wasn't until the latest beta test (presumably during the past week or so) that it became clear that the game could not release in its current state.

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA - Review @ COG

by Hiddenx, 20:03

COG has reviewed Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA:

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA Review – Charming, Heartwarming & Visually Rough RPG

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA Review

Take a deep breath. Soak in that ocean air, the slight chill in the breeze. It’s the scent of adventure, something you are all too familiar with. Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA is the latest adventure in the Ys series, an ongoing tale of adventuring around the world. While the game has a lot going for it in the way of charm, heart, and excellent handling, its presentation doesn’t live up to what it could have been.
[...]
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA is a heartwarming and interesting journey with fantastic characters and a balanced combat system. Playing the game reminded me of classics like Monster Hunter with the heavy reliance on scavenging, side quests, and traveling from zone to zone. It plays much like older games I am familiar with, but that can be a two-edged sword as newcomers might not find it up to their expectations. With the original graphics porting over from the Vita, it feels like a game that – if it didn’t have its charm – would be quickly forgotten. It’s a title for last generation but that doesn’t mean it should be overlooked; like any good adventure, this game is about the journey and it’s a trip worth taking.

The Good

  • Charming Characters
  • Excellent Combat System
  • Monster Hunter-esque

The Bad

  • Feels Outdated
  • Graphics so so

Score: 82/100

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA - Better Localization

by Hiddenx, 20:21

Dualshockers reports that the localization of Ys VIII will be fixed.

NIS America President Apologizes for Ys VIII Localization, Promises to Fix it

[...]

To All Customers of Ys VIII,

Thank you for all the feedback and support we have received since the launch of Ys VIII. It has come to my attention that the quality of the Ys VIII localization has not reached an acceptable level by our own standards, but most importantly by yours. As president of NIS America, Inc. I want to apologize to you personally for this grave error. This situation should not have happened – especially to a game as wonderful as Ys VIII and by a company that strives to deliver the very best customer experience in each title. We have begun internally to investigate the causes of this situation as well as to implement steps to ensure that a similar situation does not occur again. As for Ys VIII itself, we will have a new translator and editor go over the entire localization to fix grammatical errors, typos, inconsistencies, and also to take a fresh look at the dialog and characterizations. For the script, where necessary, we will re-translate and re-edit the game including updating voicework to reflect these changes.

We plan to have this work done by the end of November and will offer the updated localization free of charge for both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita versions of the game via patch. The Steam version of the game will include this localization in its initial release.

We humbly request your patience in this process. Again, as the president and CEO of NIS America, Inc, I deeply apologize and vow to you that we will bring the quality of the localization of Ys VIII up to the high standards that it and you deserve.

Please allow us this opportunity to restore your faith in NIS America, Inc.

Sincerely,

Takuro Yamashita

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA - Review @ Kotaku

by Hiddenx, 10:35

Kotaku has reviewed the upcoming J-RPG Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA:

Review

The Ys series has been setting the bar for combat and music in action role-playing games since 1987. The latest game, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, is no different, but it does have something more recent entries have lacked—a memorable story.

Adol Christin is one of the most enduring heroes in gaming. For three decades now the eternally-youthful redheaded swordsman has been hunting for adventure. He’s constantly getting himself embroiled in schemes to destroy the world, fighting dark gods and foiling foul plots. His exploits are the stuff of legend.

But Adol exists in a space similar to all classic Japanese action role-playing games, where defeating gods and saving the world are everyday occurrences. His legend is cobbled together from RPG tropes. He’s the hero whose coming was foretold by prophecy. The chosen one of several ancient cultures. He’s even started off one of his adventures suffering from amnesia, which is about as JRPG as you can get.

Type of game

Action RPG Extraordinaire

Liked

Tons of exploration, fast and responsive combat, unique story with wonderful characters and lots of little things to see and do.

Disliked

The secondary story is nowhere near as compelling as the first.
