Ziggurat - Review @ GamerHeadlines

by Hiddenx, 09:14

Sebastian Fisher (GamerHeadlines) introduces us in his review to the Shooter/Roguelike-Mix Ziggurat. Some snippets:

First-Person Speller

Similar to The Binding of Isaac, you begin each playthrough by selecting a character with unique attributes and items, unlocking more as you meet certain criteria while playing. While you start off with a well-rounded apprentice wizard, your options increase drastically later on, ranging from a novice spellcaster with extremely powerful basic attacks but lower starting stats, a character who has incredible damage potential but is extremely frail, and a vampire who can sap health from enemies. Each of these choices has a unique starting weapon and bullet pattern, making them play differently from each other, so that every run through the game feels new and interesting since your tactics have to be different.

Even when you die to these swarms of opponents, it’s rarely ever in vain, because as long as you’ve cleared one floor or made it to the boss room, you’re guaranteed a new weapon or perk to discover in future runs. Death is not only a learning experience in Ziggurat, it’s a chance to watch your item pool grow and make you excited for what sort of magical power you can find ahead, prompting you to play just one more run to see if you can discover anything new. This presents a somewhat addictive quality, trying out new combinations of perks, characters, and weapons to see if you can reach new limits of power, or just find new ways to fail hilariously. It makes getting revenge on the boss or enemy that killed you rather fun if you find a new toy to slaughter enemies with, and provides incredible replay value for subsequent games.

Final score: 8/10 - Awesome
