City of Villains: The Mayhem Missions @ IGN

by Inauro, 2006-06-18 07:14:00

IGN takes a closer look at City of Villains' Mayhem Missions.

The problem I had with City of Villains when it first launched was that it wasn't sinister enough. As a nefarious flying meanie, I was hoping to be more destructive and disruptive. Instead, I too often found myself fighting thugs and factions just as I had in City of Heroes (where it made more sense to me). Perhaps Cryptic Studios agrees with this sentiment, as Issue 7 of City of Villains introduces Mayhem Missions. We took a guided tour through one escapade just recently and got some cool video clips and screenshots of the anarchy, so don't forget to check that out.

Those of who you've played CoH or CoV know that missions are delivered to you by either visiting a contact or reading the newspaper. Originally, after a few random missions, you would get the opportunity to rob a bank. Basically, Mayhem Missions are bank-robbing adventures on steroids. Instead of running in, beating up a few police officers and pounding on a bank vault door, the action starts as soon as you set foot in the zone. The area will be crawling with police, and Longbow squads will regularly pop in and try to put a stop to you. Since a Mayhem Mission is timed, you don't want to get bogged down searching for baddies to fight, but a successful battle will add more time on the clock, as will destroying groups of parked vehicles, and fire hydrants and pay phones.
