Dark Flame - Interview @ Guelstie

by Myrthos, 2015-12-01 12:08:52

Eye found this interview with the Dark Flame developer (the game currently being Kickstarted and which requires a miracle to succeed).

Tell us more about the game, "Dark Flame".

You play as a crusader from the Baltic Crusades who has a different role: to protect the realm from the Dark Flame. You see, the Dark Flame is something that has been kept in secrecy by a high ranking clan of knights called the "Keepers of the Flame". What the Dark Flame is, exactly, nobody knows. What they do know is that it holds a great power that no one can control. Taharial is one of the candidates to become the next Keeper, but before he is tested, something bad happens within the sanctuary of the Dark Flame. Most townsfolk and other crusaders begin to lose their sanity and attack each other causing great chaos ...and Taharial is dispatched by the church to investigate it.

What were your influences for the game style?

As I mentioned before, Dark Flame is heavily influenced by both Castlevania and Dark Souls. There are many other influences that help shape the development of this game in various ways. One of them being Diablo; I always loved how that sprite-based game (speaking of Diablo II) was able to change armors on your characters as I believe that greatly enhanced the experience of the game! It was a way to show you that "hey, I just got way better armor!" ...in a way. Even in Diablo III, I really liked the addition of the "Transmog" feature that allowed you to use in-game currency to change the looks of your armor.

Oh, and the dyes! Final Fantasy VII is probably my favorite game ever made. With that being said, one of the influences was the "Materia" (magic) system. The magic system in Dark Flame will be very similar to that with an extra "magic creation" concept! As far as the storyline goes, Warcraft 3/Frozen Throne wins with the unfortunate story of Arthas and the path that he takes... but I won't go into detail on what we have planned..
