Eschalon: Book 1 - Interview @ RPG Vault

by Dhruin, 2006-08-08 23:24:00
Basilisk Games' indie project 'Eschalon: Book 1' is the subject of an interview at RPG Vault with Lead Developer and Programmer Thomas Riegsecker. Since there hasn't been a lot of coverage for this title thus far, let's start at the beginning:
Jonric: What would you like to say about Eschalon: Book I to introduce it to our readers? What kind of play experience and replayability will it offer, and what inspired you to create this particular style of game?

Thomas Riegsecker: Eschalon: Book I is a role-playing game that features "old-school" RPG mechanics. Since this term is somewhat vague, I will explain what it means; we are making a game that is designed to feel like some of the great computer RPGs of all time - the Ultimas, the Might & Magics, the Wizardrys, etc.

What inspired me to start this project was actually the sheer disappoint that I have felt with the design of most modern RPGs. They are created with the idea of targeting as wide a demographic as possible, and in doing so, they've shut out the niche market that gave birth to this genre in the first place. Today's hardcore RPG fans have an extremely limited number of true RPGs from which to choose. With the Eschalon series, we hope to alleviate this lack of choice by offering an RPG that is inspired by the greatest ones of all time rather than trying to reinvent the genre all over again.

We consider Eschalon to be very replayable as there will be many areas of the game that the player might not discover the first time through, and playing the game as a different character type will offer new insights into the storyline and new challenges to the player.
