Americana Dawn - JRPG Set in Colonial America

by Aubrielle, 07:05

There aren't too many games set in early America.  There are even fewer compared to Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy Tactics, or Chrono Trigger.  But Americana Dawn is.

But aesthetically it's a snazzy-looking throwback to the style of classic Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre games with a little Chrono Trigger thrown in, albeit starring characters who don't need pixelated step stools under stubby frames. Here's how the game's creators describe it:

"Americana Dawn is a role playing game which explores over two centuries of early American history using a new tradition of folklore and tall tales. Throughout its story, we follow Foster, the spirit of the sea, a gentle and innocent being who arrives in America with no apparent heritage or home. Lost to the wilderness of Shenandoah Valley, he lives in complete isolation for a hundred years until he is found and recruited in the provincial militia. Thus begins his strange journey, spanning across three wars and the entire eastern seaboard of North America: from the French and Indian War to the American Revolution, from the colony of Georgia to Quebec City."

"Foster witnesses once loyal English become American rebels. He fights against dear friends turned foe, watch mortal companions blossom and wither, bears witness to the chain of events that would create the United States, and is left with revelations both inspiring and woeful."

The team creating Americana Dawn is made up of both Japanese and American developers, so that should make for an interesting fusion of influences. I like that more games are digging into early American history, too. Sure, Assassin's Creed III didn't hit the hay bale dead-on and landed with a not-entirely-pleasant splat, but the time period is rife with possibilities for neat gameplay moments.

It's on Steam Greenlight.

Mordheim - Coming to Early Access

by Aubrielle, 18:07

Mordheim, the famous Warhammer 40K-esque tabletop war game, will soon have its PC debut.  Fans of the game will be delighted at its imminent early access release.

The Mordheim Twitter account has Tweeted with news of an imminent early access stint, which is interesting news to those of us that have been saying for ages that Games Workshop's overlooked tabletop game deserves a digital incarnation in the XCOM turn-based strategy mould. You can sign up to their email newsletter if you want to know the very moment it pops up on Steam.

Mordheim is a game about skirmishing warbands in a city destroyed by a magical asteroid. Disparate hopefuls from every corner of the Warhammer universe visit to loot the city or battle its demon infestation.

The best thing about it is your squad. Good performances can see your footsoldiers promoted, but if you take a battering your men can lose limbs, gain scars that inspire fear in enemies, or just lose their minds entirely. We'll hopefully see a few similar mechanics in Rogue Factor's take, which is certainly starting to look the part if their screenshots are anything to go by.

Pier Solar HD - Coming to PC

by Aubrielle, 07:10

Pier Solar, the (somewhat) famous 16-bit Sega RPG from 2010, is being released for PC on September 30.  It'll be available on Steam.  Here's the full scoop on PC Gamer.

Did you know they still make games for the Mega Drive? (And, for that matter, the Dreamcast, and a few other popular consoles?) Not many, sure, and they tend to be mostly shmuppy in nature, but the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis did receive a purportedly massive RPG in the year 2010. It's called Pier Solar, and it looks a bit like Lunar: Silver Star Story mixed with a SNES Final Fantasy (or at least, it does to me). The devs claim it's the "biggest 16-bit RPG ever" due to its whopping 64MB cartridge, and it's finally out on PC next week. We'll be getting an 'HD' version that blends pixel art with high definition art in a clashing and kind of ugly way, but you will be able to swap back to pure pixel art at the touch of a button.
