Age of Wonders: Planetfall - Invasions Review @Gideons Gaming

by Silver, 07:13

Gideons Gaming reviewed the Age of Wonders: Planetfall expansion Invasions.

loading...

The campaign not only does a great job of showcasing both sides of the Shakarn, but is a great way to be introduced to all of the new features within Invasions. Like other campaigns, you are presented with choices that not only affect the current mission but the next one. I really enjoyed playing with the hidden lizard people concept in the first mission, yet you can still play aggressively instead if you choose.

The Shakarn are not the only new faces to arrive. The Therians are anthropomorphic animal space pirates following in the shadows of their Deer leader. Triumph Studios really have a knack for taking a silly idea and making it work in the game that doesn’t feel odd or out of place.

The Therians are a well designed NPC faction that adds even more variety and choice in a serious manner. Yet to win them over, you may need to complete quests such as helping them research the meaning of “Who’s a good boy”

Age of Wonders: Planetfall - Revelations DLC Reviews

by Silver, 09:48

Some Age of Wonders: Planetfall, Revelations DLC reviews.

OldManMordaith

You Cannot Resist the Call

Revelations is a solid first outing for the Planetfall DLC line. I know many were hoping for a new faction, but with the diversity found in the Heritor technology, I think most will be satisfied. This DLC manages to bring new exciting things to the game without the soul-wrenching feeling of power creep.

8/10 – In Essence, an excellent first DLC. A good job that the team should be proud of balancing so well.

Verdict

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed that Revelations didn’t bring a whole new faction to the game. However, the new secret tech and NPC faction still add a great deal more flexibility to Planetfall. The Anomalous site mechanic is fantastic adding even more strategical choices to the game and the new marauders are nice, even if I find the bio-pigs a strange choice.

You can get a decent amount of playtime from the two new campaign missions and Revelations also adds new locations and pickups across the board on the strategy map and new world scenario based on the Heritors.

Revelations features plenty of new content even without a brand new faction and is worth the price. Planetfall was already great, now it is even better.

Age of Wonders: Planetfall Revelations - Interview with Game Director Lennart Sas

by Silver, 20:14

Wccftech interviewed Game Director Lennart Sas about Age of Wonders: Planetfall Revelations, which has been released today.

...

So the new hidden tech, in the trailer and in the game all have quite a magic feel to them still.

We created what we called a mythologic sci-fi, so it's more like Star Wars as opposed to hard sci-fi, and we did it not just for us but to make the transition easier for our fantasy fans. So the sort of almost magic sci-fi is intentional.

What do you think of the 4X genre at the minute?

It's an ancient genre, coming all the way from the early 90s. And I think it hit a golden age in the late 90s before recently having a resurgence. So I think there’s plenty of opportunities to have a look at the genre. Maybe not as a leader, or nation, or empire but maybe as a corporate overlord. There’s a lot of places the genre hasn’t touched yet that I think would work well.

Are you considering any of these with your IPs?

We are fully committed to keep on developing Planetfall. So there are more expansions down the line, more free events down the line. We liked the reception, and of course, success can be measured in many ways: there’s fan feedback, critical feedback, there’s sales, and play data.

We also really focused on the simultaneous shipping with consoles, which is something we’re really proud of. I don’t think there’s been another 4X game that has simultaneously shipped with all versions being equal across the platforms. We’ve got an entire pipeline running so that when there’s a new build we can spit it out on very console at once. And in the past the way you would do that is to release it on PC and somewhere down the line, once all the bugs were fixed, you get someone else in to do the port. And that’s been a big learning experience for us.

Age of Wonders: Planetfall - Review @ Gamesxtreme

by Hiddenx, 08:46

Gamesxtreme has reviewed Age of Wonders: Planetfall:

Age of Wonders: Planetfall Review

Age of Wonders

I've always sat and watched the Age of Wonders games carefully, eyeing them on various Youtube playlists and channels. I never really felt the urge to jump into an AoW game until now. I got the chance to get a code from PR for Age of Wonders: Planetfall and I have to say, right now, this is one of the best strategy games I've played on my Xbox One since Stellaris.

I'm a bit of an armchair ruler to be honest, and whilst some of the systems often go over my head in many of these games - and they always did on PC. Often, these strategy games are presented as so-much obscure gameplay mechanics, with little or no help for a new player, and oft appear as opaque as smoky coloured glass.

Age of Wonders: Planetfall isn't like this, and it's hugely accessible for a first timer like me from the get go.

I really appreciate this in a game as deep as this one.

Must Buy
AoW Planetfall is a fantastic entry to the 4X genre. It is the perfect jump-in point for new fans to the series or the genre. It is packed with replay value and has a fantastic soundtrack which is worthy of the best video game OSTs of this year so far. Hugely fun, extremely accessible and loaded with tactical options. I cannot recommend this game enough.

Age of Wonders: Planetfall - Review @ PC Gamer

by Hiddenx, 18:14

Age of Wonders: Planetfall has been released today - PC Gamer reviewed the strategy game:

Age of Wonders: Planetfall review

Age of Wonders: Planetfall injects fast-paced, tactical fun into the 4X's aging conquest model.

Revenge is a dish best served cold, the ancient Klingon saying goes, and nobody knows this better than penguins. Having made the interstellar journey to this dusty backwater planet alongside my rugged band of frontier fighters, the penguins quickly proved themselves admirable fighters in our war against the vicious psychic bugs who had showed up first. As my troopers fell prey to the insects' virulent battle vomit, the 10-foot penguins swooped in to tear the bugs apart with trisected beaks.
[...]
My complaints, though, are minor. Age of Wonders: Planetfall offers not only a welcome change of scenery from the fantasy landscapes of its forebears, it manages to use its sci-fi setting imaginatively and meaningfully. With a fun story campaign and highly granular customization options for one-off scenarios, there's plenty here into which to sink your teeth—or chittering mandibles, as the case may be.

Score: 85/100 - Age of Wonders: Planetfall, while a bit opaque in some areas, is the most entertaining 4X I've played in years.

Age of Wonders: Planetfall - Preview

by Silver, 05:19

Dualshockers has previewed Age of Wonders: Planetfall.

While Age of Wonders: Planetfall remains a strategy game once a battle between two units begins, the style of strategy game changes. Instead of being a Civilization style 4X game, things change to a turn based strategy game more akin to XCOM. This style worked well for Age of Empires III, and it maintains its luster in Age of Wonders: Planetfall, even if it may end making late game last for a long time. I had access to a variety of different units: regular soldiers, snipers, tank characters, etc. These all had distinct advantages and disadvantages, and can be used to resolve battle swiftly if the right strategies are used.

I was facing off against a giant mech that could easily take out smaller enemies. To avoid this, I made sure it stayed focused on my unit that fulfilled the role of the tank and hit it with everything my stronger units could do. It was satisfying to take down the giant mechanical beast, but several enemies still remained before I could progress. As just one part of one turn, this portion of Age of Wonders: Planetfall was quite lengthy consider my units were upgraded to fit the late game. Almost half of my demo time was spent in this section, and this was just one battle on one turn. While I don’t mind that, it’s obvious that Age of Wonders: Planetfall will be a gigantic timesink for anyone who picks it up. For a 4X strategy game, I can’t even say that’s a bad thing.

Age of Wonders: Planetfall - Interview @VentureBeat

by Silver, 08:41

VentureBeat interviewed Lennart Sas about Age of Wonders: Planetfall.

GamesBeat: Which engine are you using? Is this something you built inside?

Sas: It’s our own engine, the Creator engine we call it. It’s a 64-bit native engine. It’s tailored to this type of game. We have an entire modding engine for the fanbase. It’s our own engine.

GamesBeat: How you do you view the landscape for turn-based strategy games these days?

Sas: It’s still going very strong. If you look at the position of turn-based strategy as opposed to RTS, for example, there’s been a renaissance of turn-based strategy over the last couple of years. Starting off with Civ and XCOM breaking through a long way. If I look now at what Age of Wonders 3 compared to the sort of golden age of Age of Wonders games, the late ’90s and early 2000s, Age of Wonders 3 outsold that by a big factor. Not 20 percent, but a couple of hundred percent more. That says a lot, I think, about the genre. The audience has grown a lot because of digital distribution. It[‘s a lot more accessible compared to those old days where you had limited shelf space and a lot of these niche titles between brackets. They managed to stay on the shelves for a lot shorter time. It’s a very good time to make turn-based strategy games.

Age of Wonders: Planetfall - Interview @PCGamesN

by Silver, 19:12

The developers of Age of Wonders: Planetfall were interviewed by PCGamesN.

PCGamesN: You mentioned that Planetfall was partly a response to certain criticisms of Age of Wonders III. Which criticisms specifically?

Tom Bird: One was that the world map layer felt underdeveloped – specifically, its economic aspects. In Age of Wonders III, you plonk down a city to capture nodes, those nodes give you income, you use that income to make more cities, to capture more nodes, and it’s a circle.

People wanted more; they wanted more decisions, and more decisions that meant something, beyond simply ‘what do I grab next, and how do I grab it.’ So a lot of work has gone into ensuring that the game offers those kinds of choices; risk, reward, and alternatives, optimal paths here but also a sub-optimal path that is optimal in other ways.

The new exploitation system is an example of this, right?

Benny Arents: Yes. Different terrains and different biomes will all determine the potential of sectors that you acquire. But you don’t have to use these sectors to their full potential if you don’t want to – it might be better for you to make a sub-optimal choice now to increase the growth of your colonies, and then maybe switch that over later on. We also have landmark structures that give strong bonuses in single resources. Players will be fighting over territory to claim these landmarks, which can really boost their empire and get ahead of others.

Age of Wonders: Planetfall - New Dev Diaries

by Silver, 11:04

The latest Age of Wonders: Planetfall dev diaries focus on Diplomacy, the Marauders, and the Dvar faction.

Diplomacy Goals. With its war-game roots, the AoW series featured rudimentary diplomacy systems which generally resulted in you either being at war with others or in an alliance, with little in between. For Planetfall we want to take diplomacy to a new level and set the following goals:

  • Support Multiple Roads to Victory: Base game Planetfall offers alternate roads to victory in addition to conquering other players. In AoW3 basically every war resulted in a fight to the death. Diplomacy should help people achieve alternative victory goals, by protecting them from aggressors and achieve short- and longer-term goals through non-combat means.
  • Foreshadow Behavior: The diplomacy systems should clearly manage and communicate the changing disposition between players and foreshadow likely (AI) behavior like war declarations. In AoW3 wars were often declared with no forewarning and with few counter balances.
  • Increase Player Survivability: Keep the game fun through diplomacy even though the player might not be the ultimate victor.
  • Living AI Factions: The diplomacy system should make AI players and NPC factions feel like living entities through logical behavior and situational messaging.
  • Meaningful Trade: The diplomacy system should facilitate meaningful Trade between factions. Find peaceful resolutions to border disputes by exchanging provinces.
  • Non-Mutual Relations: The Player vs Player relation should be a non-mutual relation. This gets around the problem that a trespassing player would start to dislike the faction whose land he/she’s trespassing. Every player has its own view on other players. They are only connected with each other through their diplomatic state.
  • Expose the Diplomacy system with variables and modifier rather a black box approach with fuzzy messages. This helps people understand the mechanics behind the systems and is in line with approach taken with other game systems.

[...]

Marauder Behaviors
  • Marauder armies become active after 5-10 turns. It is very important to scout the surroundings and know if you need to prepare for attack. Of course, the new scan-range helps give an early warning of movement in unexplored or fogged terrain.
  • Marauders can be both opportunistic and suicidal, but there is some prioritization in their targets: First they prioritize Armies (Scouts), then Sector Bases and then Colonies
  • When they first enter an area, they’ll pause, given you one turn before they attack.
  • Marauders will park on resource nodes, denying income.
  • Marauders will raze sector bases. This takes 3 turns so there is a possibility to stop them.
  • Marauders taking over Colony Centers, plunge the settlement into anarchy. If the anarchy timer expires, the colony will be reduced to a camp.
  • Marauder strength scales as the game progresses.
    • Typical marauder units have two mutations, equipping them with mods of increasing power
    • Also, marauder army composition changes during game. More and higher tier units will spawn.
    • The overall threat level the timing these mutation event can be changed with the World Threat Level difficulty setting.

History:

The Dvar originate from mining consortia sent out to strip worlds of their natural resources. Dvar pride themselves as being the hardest of survivors. Visitors to their home world will support that claim, as after the collapse the Dvar’ were marooned on a barely habitable planet with an elliptical orbit, causing it to be scorched during short blazing summers and then frozen by eternal winters. To make matters worse, their world passes through an asteroid belt, causing a yearly bombardment of giant rocks. This environment made the Dvars to evolve as a bunker dwelling species and see nature as something that needs to be distrusted and looted as soon as a window of opportunity arises.

The Dvar are organized in Consortiums, where each Dvar is a partner in securing their group’s survival and wealth. The Consortiums are led by an upper class Oligarchy of the richest families. Although the cynical, hard-working drinking Dvar regards the rich with distrust, their sense of company community is strong. They live for the competition with the other Consortia and work hard to further their Consortium’s wealth and standing.

Age of Wonders: Planetfall - NPC Factions and Diplomacy

by Silver, 02:53

Some new updates for Age of Wonders: Planetfall. Dev Diary #10 looks at NPC Factions and Diplomacy while Dev Diary #11 looks at Faction Customization.

Hi there! Welcome to this week’s development update where we’ll be discussing the role of NPC factions and the all new PvE (Player V Environment) Diplomacy system in Age of Wonders: Planetfall.

I’d like to emphasize the game is still in development so everything is subject to change; this diary includes some WIP interface stuff and onscreen text.

As you visit the collapsed worlds of the Star Union, you’ll notice they are filled with survivors. The game recognizes the following NPC Factions. (NPC is short for Non-Primary Combatants)

· The Spacers – Mutated descendants of the urban populations. Their society and religion were shaped by gaming culture, as the empire population was entertained extreme VR experiences. With the networks gone, they seek their thrills in the physical world.

· The Paragons – The former governing and elite classes. They’ve survived the collapse through life extending augmentations and therapies which are now faltering. They haven’t lost their arrogance and entitlement though.

· The Growth – Intelligent plants escaped from biotech company Terra Tech. They strive to live in a symbiosis with other life forms, not for people with tenctaclephobia.

· The Automons – Robots from the emergency services that have developed their own autonomous AIs after the central network of CORE went down.

· The Psi-Fish – Mysterious floating aliens that have become more prevalent after the collapse.

· Marauders - An umbrella term for the monsters and pirates that are beyond reason and cannot be negotiated with, not a true NPC Faction.

The NPC Factions are far from the sitting ducks from previous AoW games, they can’t be ignored. They might have alien savage societies, but are in the majority at the start of the game.

[...]

Hi there, welcome to this week’s Planetfall Journal where we’ll be taking a look at Commander Creation. The Commander is your in-game avatar, the embodiment of your empire in the making. Commanders come from variety of backgrounds, but all are sent out to claim a former Star Union world for their respective faction. The type of Commander you are has a great impact on how you achieve victory.

In this journal we’ll be taking a look at the game mechanic part of the customization process. As we go through the Customization Process, you’ll get a good idea of how gameplay mechanics and content is distributed in Planetfall. You can start a game either by choosing a pre-made commander or creating your own.

Age of Wonders: Planetfall - Dev Diary #7 and #8

by Silver, 14:06

Some new development diaries for Age of Wonders: Planetfall. Diary #7 focuses some more on Combat Units (P2) while Diary #8 looks at Global Resources.

Hello there! Today we're going back to the world map, and starting with an overview of the global resources in Age of Wonders: Planetfall. Next to some familiar items from Age of Wonders III you’ll notice that there are many changes and additions.

  • Energy. Energy is the main universal currency in the game. It is used for the production and upkeep of units, colony structures, unit modules and operations. Energy is generated by your colonies and no empire can go without it. Energy can be traded, and can be found as nodes and pickups on the map.
  • Cosmite. This rare material has an origin beyond the void and is required for advanced units and unit modules. Cosmite is mainly gained from map nodes (Craters!). The rarity of this material means that high tier units can’t be mass produced and Sectors containing Cosmite are highly contested.
  • Influence. Influence is the diplomatic currency used to manipulate other players and NPC factions, it can be used for things like asking NPCs to surrender locations, hire NPCs mercenaries, and to make diplomatic pronouncements. Influence is gained by performing Quests and from an inherent generation of your empire. Cooperative Doctrines and friendly play styles give bonusses on Influence generation.
Quest for The Growth NPC Faction with influence among the rewards.
  • Reputation. Your reputation determines how other Empires and NPC factions see you. Reputation modifies your Influence gain and Global Morale. Similar to AoW3’s alignment, your Reputation is influenced by your in-game actions.
  • Knowledge. Knowledge is used to rediscover and apply the lost technologies of the Star Union. You might notice there are two Research like slots in the top bar of the latest screenshot, more on this later!
  • Tactical Operation Points. After feedback on AoW3 we’ve decided to split “Casting Points” for Planetfall in two. Tactical Operations Points are used to launch the Operations (Air strikes, Psi Storms, etc) you can call in during tactical combat, when a battle takes place within your Operational Coverage. The Tac Ops value resets every turn.
  • Strategic Ops. Used to launch Strategic Operations that are used on the world map. Strategic Operations include summons, sector (de-)buffs, and covert actions.
  • Doctrine Slots. Determines the amount of global doctrines (e.g. empire wide bonuses) you can have active at once.
  • Global Morale. Overall morale of your empire affecting Unit Morale and the Happiness of your colonists. It is influenced by the wars you enter and how justified they are perceived to be.
Note there are more variables but they are not global. Like colony food and production capacity.

Got Questions? Feel free to ask them. In future journals we’ll be going in-depth on the topics these resources govern.

Finally I’d like to use this space to give my thanks the community members sending the flowers and the well-wishes for the birth of my second child! Much appreciated. Everybody is doing well. Now I’m back to the relative quiet of the office

Thanks Farflame!

Age of Wonders: Planetfall - Dev Diary #5&6: Combat

by Silver, 14:31

The dev diary #5 for Age of Wonders: Planetfall focuses on tactical combat. For dev diary #6 the focus is on tactical combat mechanics and units!

Hello everybody! Today's Dev Diary is about the basics of tactical combat. Just like in Age of Wonders 3, combat is a very important part of playing Planetfall and one of the biggest challenges we had was keeping the feel of AoW3 combat whilst developing a system that is more focused on ranged combat than melee combat.

Dome.png
A group of marines approach a Psi-Shrine guarded by Spacer pirates

Accuracy and Hit Chances
One of the first things we decided was that we needed to bring hit chances back into the game, having ranged weapons always hit makes combat feel stale and predictable, while the chance of an attack failing adds a level of excitement and tension. It also allowed us to add more gameplay to the combat environments, long range attacks would have their accuracy reduced, as would attacks on units behind cover. The terrain now has different height levels, and shooting at a unit that's lower than oneself grants a bonus to accuracy. Units can also deploy smoke screens to protect their units in areas without cover.

Shootup.png
Aya Sashimi, a Vanguard hero, takes a pot shot at a distant Dvar walker.

One issue is that many people really, really dislike missing attacks. To help fix this every attack has a chance to Graze a target instead of missing it. Grazing shots do half damage, and any special effects attached to the attack are either weakened or disabled entirely. The chance of a graze happening is up to 25% of the chance to miss, so:

Code:

Chance To Hit | Chance To Graze | Chance To Do Nothing
90% | 10% | 0%
75% | 25% | 0%
50% | 25% | 25%

This gives the player more of a sense of control, since if a shot is good enough it's guaranteed to do something, only the most reckless and ill-advised attacks have a high chance of achieving nothing at all.

Overwatch and Staggering

Overwatch was another feature that we decided early on to add. Units in overwatch guard an arc of hexes in front of them, and the first enemy unit to act or move in one of those hexes will get shot at. Melee units get a special type of multidirectional overwatch which they enter even if they attacked during their turn, giving them a free attack against any unit who tries to move past them or shoot them at point blank range.

In order to counter overwatch, we added the Impact system. High Impact attacks, such as explosives and melee attacks, can Stagger the units they hit, knocking them out of overwatch and allowing your own units to act safely. Staggering will also knock units out of guard mode, and reduce their action points, limiting their options in their next turn. Stagger a unit enough times, and it will not be able to act at all!

Quick Q&A

When this Dev Diary was announced, I got an awful lot of questions and requests for explanations, far more than I could fit in today. So, I've picked a few of the most interesting questions to answer:

Will some races (such as space dwarves) be able to drop turrets and deploy them during battle?

The Vanguard specialize in drones and autonomous robots, their engineer unit can deploy a turret while their T4 specializes in launching various types of drones in combat to provide defensive and offensive support.

Will there be the possibility to burn battlefields down, effectively creating fire barriers?

The Promethean specialize in weapons that leave areas of the battlefield on fire, providing area denial abilities. They can also mod their units to be immune to this fire, or even gain buffs from it, allowing them to reshape the battlefield to their advantage.

The Promethean Phoenix Walker can set large swathes of the battlefield alight, and regenerates health while standing in flames

Are there any insta-death abilities, like disintegrate in AoW3?

There are indeed! For example, the Plasma Disintegrator Module is an end game mod for laser weaponry, allowing attacks to strip armor and giving a chance to insta-kill tier 1 and 2 units.

What formula will be used to calculate damage?

AoW3's damage formulas use flat damage reduction, which does not cope well with the wide range of damage values we need for this game, so we're using a formula that reduces damage proportionally.

I = Incoming damage
D = Actual damage taken
R = Damage resistance (sum of shields, armor and elemental resistance)

D = I x 0.9^R

The formula also has diminishing returns; the first few points of resistance reduce damage by roughly 10% each, but as more is stacked, this decreases rapidly. The difference between 10 and 11 resistance is only 4%.

And that's it for this week. In next week's dev diary we'll be taking a closer look at tactical combat mechanics and units!

Age of Wonders: Planetfall - Dev Diary #1

by Silver, 15:36

Over on the Paradox forums Age of Wonders: Planetfall gets its first development diary.

Hi there! and welcome to the first Age of Wonders: Planetfall development journal. From here on, the team at Triumph will be giving you weekly updates on our progress and revealing details of the game along the way.

Join us at the Paradox Forums: First a request to the AoW3 community: we kindly ask you to join us here on the Paradox forums, as the old Age of Wonders ones will be closed down later this year. This way Triumph can spend more time making games and less on fighting spam-bots. Please create your account here.

Inspiration: By Gandalf’s beard - A sci-fi Age of Wonders? Yes - It’s been a long-standing wish from many of the team to do something with our love of sci fi: Starwars, Dune, Fallout, Starship Troopers have all been an inspiration in one form or another. We feel our beloved war-focussed 4X game formula is a great fit for sci-fi themes - and futuristic weapon arsenals. At the same time, nothing gets the creative juices flowing like a new setting.

Premise: As one of the heirs to the shattered Star Union, you emerge from a cosmic Dark Age to craft a new future for your people. You travel to one of the many lost worlds of the old empire, where you will find marvels among the remnants of this once great civilization. You will need to develop / rediscover technologies and social doctrines for your colonists to thrive on these hostile worlds, for you are not alone here. Other houses compete with yours to rebuild the Star Union, and you will need both a carefully crafted arsenal, and a firm grip on diplomacy if you are to have a chance at victory.

Our Goals:

  •  Build a new setting filled with lore and new gameplay opportunities.
  •  Transform the melee centered fantasy battles to new ranged sci-fi clashes with cover, overwatch and destructible terrain. Hit chances are back. It’s familiar and vastly different at the same time.
  •  Develop Planetary Empire building: Compared to AoW3, we want to added new layers of depth to the economy and diplomacy systems. Sessions now play on wrapping planets which are procedurally generated.
  •  Roll out the fourth generation of Triumph’s Creator Engine, which is 64 bit, has a PBR renderer and a new toolset. This allows us – and eventually you through modding – to create a better looking worlds, that contain more content, more efficiently.

There is nothing that reflects the fusion of the gameplay and the setting better than the unit line up. So here is one in pre-alpha state for you: A Vanguard Liberator with Flechette Ammo and Jetpack mods called the Screaming Eagle. How would you name this unit variant?
