Crown Wars: The Black Prince Review – Not a Hundred Years In the Making

Turn-based games can be quite the challenge, with their diversity of units and skills providing many ways of approaching the battlefield. And a true battlefield it is in Crown Wars: The Black Prince, a game set in medieval times where the Hundred Years’ War is revisited but with a supernatural twist. In theory, this is a recipe for some interesting skirmishes where steel and magic collide, but ultimately this game is brought down by some issues that are impossible to ignore.

[...]

Ultimately, the battles in Crown Wars: The Black Prince end up being extremely long, somewhat dull, and worrisome due to some of the issues described above. It’s not necessarily a bad game and the gameplay loop can be interesting if you stick to it, but it lacks polish and fine-tuning, resulting in a flawed offering that will quickly make fans of the genre start looking elsewhere for better alternatives.

Score: 6/10

Crown Wars: The Black Prince - Review @ TBL

by Hiddenx, 19:36

The Turn Based Lovers reviewed Crown Wars: The Black Prince:

THE ONE HUNDRED YEARS WAR WITH A DARK TWIST IN TACTICAL RPG – CROWN WARS: THE BLACK PRINCE – REVIEW

CROWN WARS: THE BLACK PRINCE (CW: TBP) combines the fairly unique SETTING of The One Hundred Years war with a dark fantasy theme of the occult. They bind together an interesting STORY with strategic and tactical elements that set it apart from other turn-based tactical (TBT) strategy games.

Play takes place on a WORLD MAP, a historical representation of the territory where the Hundred Years War took place. The map is filled with tokens representing story-driven missions and supporting quests, which pop up and disappear with regular vigour throughout the game. Only a limited number of squads can be sent out to fight encounters. It is possible to send out parties whose journey time will take them past the expiry date.

With so many supporting battles, the player can dictate how ready and prepared they want their parties to be which contributes to the length of a game. Once sent, squads cannot be recalled even if sent out in error. A combination of time constraints and a lack of extra reward kills any incentive to attempt side quests further away from the base of operations

The actual CAMPAIGN would be short if only story missions were counted, despite taking place over five acts. Gameplay is puffed out with filler battles required for the resources to build up the infrastructure of the castle, the soldiers under the player’s command and consumables needed to give an edge in battles.

VERDICT
Crown Wars: The Black Prince (CW:TBP) is a playable medieval-themed strategy game that aptly demonstrates the experience it could become with additional balancing and QoL.

It is hampered by an unbalanced campaign that would seem on the short side were it not for the constant availability of filler battles. It is also beset by an unforgiving combat model that makes for a harder challenge than it should be. Despite these, a set of complimentary TBT combat mechanics, plus a streamlined and relevant strategy layer, make good bedfellows. Together, these give the player plenty of leeway to play the game their way.

Right now CW:TBP is something I would MAYBE consider. A few more of the right patches would take it beyond that recommendation.

The dark forces will work to infiltrate other factions so players may need to intervene to prevent their controlled factions getting too powerful and gaining full control of the kingdom.

Following its take on The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk, French developer Artefacts Studio returns with another tactical title in the form of Crown Wars: The Black Prince. The game combines history and fantasy with its take on the Hundred Years’ War between France and England. Artefacts Studio is aiming to build on its experience with The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk to dive a bit deeper into the tactical side of things.

Crown Wars: The Black Prince is set following the disastrous 1356 Battle of Poitiers where the French king was captured by Prince Edward, the eponymous Black Prince. However, the game introduces a dark supernatural twist of evil lurking in the shadows. The game begins with a tutorial prologue where the secret base of a group fighting back against is raided by opposing forces. After this, players are invited to select one of four French noble houses to play as. After falling on hard times, a friend gives players the opportunity to reestablish their family with a small feudal domain, while working for the greater cause of reinstating the French kingdom. However, this will eventually lead to them encountering a greater evil power lurking in the shadows.

The main campaign sees players sending their recruited units on missions across France. There will be some strategy to this, as players will need to consider the time taken to get to missions as well as which units to send on them. The campaign is not static, with a calendar system in use where missions may disappear after a certain amount of time. In addition, players will need to give time for units to recuperate, as they don’t automatically heal after each battle. It’s certainly not a case of being able to rely on a single powerful party, players will want to have plenty of units available to step in where needed. A campaign is intended to last around 25 hours.
