Armored Princess - UK Retail Release

by Aries100, 17:51

King's Bounty: Armored Princess is being released by UK publisher, Focus Multimedia for retail sale in the UK.  It will be in stores March 19th 2010.

GamaSutra has the full press release:

March 2010 - Focus Multimedia, one of the UK's leading PC games and software publishers, is bringing the smash hit adventure RPG King's Bounty: Armored Princess to UK retail for the very first time.

King's Bounty: Armored Princess is the standalone sequel to the multi-award winning role-playing game (RPG) King's Bounty: The Legend. Described as "awesome" in a 9 out of 10 review on gamesradar.com and "outstanding" by gamespot.com, King's Bounty: Armored Princess is already garnering critical acclaim.

King's Bounty: Armored Princess unfolds in a rich new fantasy world. Hordes of demons have ravaged the lands of Darion and defeated the troops of King Mark. Darion's only hope is the legendary knight Sir Gilbert, but the celebrated hero left long ago to explore the distant world of Teana. The player takes command of Princess Amelie as she travels to the mystical and dangerous kingdom of Teana in a quest to find Sir Gilbert and bring him home.

Armies of terrifying creatures and monstrous bosses all stand in Amelie's path. Fortunately she has many new skills and abilities to help her overcome the enemies attacking the kingdom of Teana, including her own pet dragon!

The princess and her army of companions travel across a huge continent, communicating with other characters, collecting resources and recruiting an army. Whilst exploring, Amelie is controlled in real-time mode.

When a battle takes place the game switches to classic turn-based mode with a strong emphasis on tactical elements. King's Bounty: Armored Princess is a game with widespread appeal.

With a fascinating storyline, beautiful hand drawn environments and gameplay that is both accessible and immersive, King's Bounty: Armored Princess will enchant fans of the fantasy game genre as well as casual gamers.

King's Bounty: Armored Princess is the first title of a new partnership between Focus Multimedia and leading Eastern European games publisher 1C Company, marking Focus' expansion into the full price gaming market.

Focus is the UK's market leader in impulse price PC games and software. King's Bounty: Armored Princess is available on Friday 19th March from all good games retailers, or may be ordered direct from www.focusmm.co.uk.

To view a list of UK stockists, visit http://www.kings-bounty.com/eng/links.php. The suggested retail price is just £19.99 including VAT.

Hamburg, 08.03.2010 – In Großbritannien, den USA und vielen weiteren Ländern ist King‘s Bounty: Armored Princess bereits seit Ende November 2009 erhältlich. Armored Princess - Review @ ComputerGames.ro

by Dhruin, 21:31

ComputerGames.ro has a review of Katauri's Armoured Princess.  The score is 87% and here's a snip:

If you put The Legend and Armored Princess side by side, you’ll notice that the later is friendlier when it comes to functionality and more complex, both in terms of exploration and combat. But, just like its predecessor, regardless of how much replay value the three classes, multiple difficulty levels, unit abilities and elements which affect the outcome of a battle might offer, it won’t write history.

Not as long as there’s still no multiplayer or at least a level editor, to allow skirmish battles against the AI. And since there’s still no word regarding the third entry in the series, the concepts upon which The Legend and Armored Princess were built leave the door wide open for a possible Heroes of Might and Magic 6.

Armored Princess - Review @ Gaming Nexus

by Dhruin, 20:08

A new Armoured Princess review is up at Gaming Nexus, with a rating of "B":

Gameplay is very similar to that in The Legend. Amelie moves about the colorful and detailed map in real-time, collecting various goodies and gathering her eclectic army. The units available in Armored Princess are mostly all familiar, with a few additions and tweaks thrown in. Enemies also wander these maps, and whenever Amelie gets too close, the game moves to a turn-based, hex-board battle. Here, each stack of creatures or combatants takes turns moving across the board and attacking the enemy stacks, until one side is victorious. Amelie herself never steps on the battlefield, but may spend her precious mana reserves to cast spells on her troops to turn the tide of battle. The spells are very similar to those in The Legend, although many have been tweaked to balance things a bit.

RPGWatch Feature - King's Bounty: Armored Princess Review

by Dhruin, 06:31

King's Bounty was a staff favourite last year, so we looked forward to Armoured Princess with anticipation.  Aries100 brings us his review as a newcomer to the series, with additional comments from the team.  Here's a snip:

I didn't expect to find the turnbased combat as fun and strategic as I did, since turnbased games aren't my usual preference. However, the combat in KB:AP is fun, engaging and challenging - just like a good game of chess. And the combat never becomes trivial or boring, since each troop has their own unique abilities you'll need to put to good use. This ensures varied gameplay in combat.

Read it all here.

Armored Princess - Review @ GameSpot

by Dhruin, 21:35

Major site GameSpot has posted their review of Armoured Princess, awarding a score of 8/10:

King's Bounty: Armored Princess does more of the same really well. The stand-alone expansion to 2008's cult hit King's Bounty: The Legend adds virtually nothing to the original's strategy role-playing game formula, but the game does all of the by-the-numbers stuff so perfectly that you can't help but love the deja vu. While developer Katauri Interactive isn't going to win any awards for innovation here, this is still a must-play for anyone who loves this genre.

Armored Princess - Review @ Gamepex

by Dhruin, 10:03

Gamepex writes in with their review of Armoured Princess, which carries a modest score of 7/10.  Graphics, sound and "constant restocking of troops" are all criticised, with the dialogue and engaging combat among the positives:

This, unfortunately, introduces one of the reasons why this game doesn’t come with a “guaranteed fresh” seal of approval. Let’s say you have 10 units, all of whom you take into battle. After celebrating your victory, you come to realize you only have two left. Two, unfortunately, is too few for the next battle, so you decide to buy more. Trouble is, this particular unit is only available on another island. So, back to the boat you go. Open up your map, click on the desired island, find the store and travel back. After. Every. Single. Battle. Obviously, this gets a bit old.

Armored Princess - Steam Sale

by Dhruin, 07:20

I try not to spam sales but some deals are just too good not to cover.  Steam's holiday sale has King's Bounty: Armoured Princess on offer for $9.95 - an absolute steal (watch out for our review soon).  Only nine hours left as I type, on this one.

The Witcher: EE is also worth a look if you haven't played this gem at $13.59.

Armored Princess - Review @ GameBanshee

by Dhruin, 12:07

GameBanshee has kicked up their review of Armoured Princess with a three-page article.  They seem to have dropped the scores but the text is quite positive:

Armored Princess is a tactical turn-based RPG sequel of sorts to King's Bounty: The Legend, released just over a year ago. GameBanshee gave the original a 9.3 in a thorough review, so how does Armored Princess fare? While it uses the same engine, many of the same monsters, and much of the same music, Armored Princess is still a full-length game with an original story and innumerable small and medium-sized changes since its predecessor. Fortunately, they're nearly all for the better, making Armored Princess well worth your time and this series one that you shouldn't miss.

Armored Princess - Review @ Games Radar

by Aries100, 17:53

A very positive review 9/10 for King's Bounty: Armored Princess can be found at Games Radar. Here's what they say about what makes the game fun:

It’s lunacy that made the original, King’s Bounty: The Legend, lots of fun. Every side-quest you encounter in Armored Princess is like an epic saga; the music swells ridiculously as you rummage through your inventory, and your troops enjoy a survival rate similar to decapitation victims. Thanks to the sense of humour, the surprises, the relentless, tense fights, and that colourful world that rewards every inch of exploration, it’s as enjoyable at the 20 hour mark as it is five hours in.

Armored Princess - Review @ GameShark

by Magerette, 17:06

The latest look at Armored Princess turns up at Game Shark, who despite labeling it as 'more of the same' gameplay seen in  King's Bounty:The Legend, give it a detailed, positive review and score of B+:

If you’re still here then you’re likely new to the world of King’s Bounty. In that case you absolutely should pick up a copy of Armored Princess not because of forward thinking game design or anything like that – you should get it because it’s the kind of game that eagerly sucks away hours of your free time, just like all great strategy games have a knack of doing; this is definitely one of those “Holy cow it’s 2 AM!” types of games.

Armored Princess - Character Planner

by Dhruin, 21:32

The official King's Bounty site is pointing out an interactive Flash character planner for Armoured Princess (and The Legend).  Here's their blurb:

Great news for all English speaking fans of King’s Bounty series!
Colorful and very convenient character planner HeroScreen from Aurelain allows you to think over the hero's development and select the optimal combination of units and artifacts, moreover it can be used as an interactive guide for game.

This interactive guide uses Flash technology and has user-friendly interface. It contains full information about heroes, their skills, units, items, armor-bearers (wives) and medals. HeroScreen is being updated on constant basis and it can become a very effective and useful assistant during your adventures across the worlds of King’s Bounty.

Armored Princess - Review @ RPGamer

by Magerette, 19:41

RPGamer is the latest site to dish up a KB: Armored Princess review, with some complaints about too much similarity to the original title and the difficulty level producing a ranking of average at 3/5:

Once again the difficulty is a considerable issue for the game. A new rune trading dwarf is available, so Warriors stuck with dozens of Rage runes can now swap them into Magic or Mind and thus players are better capable of balancing their characters -- however, this is the only easing of prior frustrations the player will see. While Easy is still considerably easier than Normal and Hard, the game overall is frustratingly difficult. In addition, the Mage class (previously "the" class to play in The Legend due to a great balance of and abilities) is now the underdog class, as magic scales very poorly in relation to enemy troop size. This problem is compounded by the fact that it is incredibly easy for the player to back inadvertently into a corner where they can no longer move forward as they either cannot defeat the enemies, or that the final boss looms and no other enemies are available to fight. Unfortunately, this is simply the product of a game with finite opponents; the irksome part is there is no good way to gauge if or when the player will become trapped like this. Due to the much higher difficulty, players can expect to spend at least fifty hours with the game on the easiest difficulty alone, with a much higher playtime expected on the higher settings.

Conclusion:

Armored Princess cleans up and expands considerably on The Legend but manages to stumble over itself with a punishing difficulty curve and a few errors of its own that manage to pull the game down more than the improvements buoy it...While the difficulty should not scare away fans of the genre and anyone looking for a challenge, in the end it may be more suitable for someone new to the series. Someone preferring a more sedate pace may be best advised to check out the previous entry in the series.

Armored Princess - Review @ Games32

by Magerette, 18:12

Games32 has posted a review of  KB: Armored Princess, Katauri Interactive's and1C Company's standalone expansion to last year's Kings' Bounty: The Legend, scoring it 88% overall. Compared to several reviewers they seem to be fine with the story, but agree with most others in viewing the gameplay as the most notable feature:

Compared to the original title, Armored Princess has a far more engaging story, although the value of this game resides not its narrative, but rather in the rock solid gameplay. Think of it as a bonus, or if you prefer a more cynical approach, as an excuse for an expansion which preserves the high standards set by King's Bounty: The Legend, without adding a great deal of new features. The somehow goofy name, makes it perfectly clear that the main character is a valiant princess, capable of overcoming challenges insurmountable for most people.

Conclusion:

If the name King's Bounty rings familiar, but you didn't have the chance to play the original title, then by all means give this game a go because it won't let you down. Armored Princess is slightly better then it's predecessor, with a more attractive narrative and revamped visual effects and just enough new features to make it a standalone expansion. Fans will probably be somewhat disappointed by the overwhelming similarities with the prequel and the scarceness of novelty, but they'll quickly dismiss any complaints once they start playing.

Armored Princess - Review @ GameInformer

by Dhruin, 19:03

GameInformer has reviewed Armoured Princess, awarding an 8.75/10:

Before playing King’s Bounty: Armored Princess, I’d have called you a dirty liar if you told me a second-tier Russian company buying the rights to the classic title would result in a great game for Heroes of Might & Magic fans. I’m ecstatic to be proven wrong. This title is a solid followup to last year’s under-the-radar King’s Bounty: The Legend, tweaking many things for the better and providing a fabulous setting in which to adventure. The turn-based tactical combat is as entertaining as anything HOMM ever did, and exchanging that series’ empire building for a single-hero RPG-like approach works better than expected.

Armored Princess - Review @ Hooked Gamers

by Skavenhorde, 13:38

Hooked Gamers gives us their opinion on the recently released game Kings Bounty: Armoured Princess with a score of 8.2. They didn't care for the storyline at all, but felt the gameplay was superb. Here is the verdict on the game:

King's Bounty: Armored Princess has a forgettable story and dated graphics that seem borrowed from much older medieval fantasy titles. However, its gameplay is superb. The turn-based combat is the main component of this game and fortunately its strongest draw. While easy to learn, it is deeply strategic and very satisfying, especially when defeating an army that is much stronger than your own.

The overall formula of island hopping also proves to be very addictive. Clearing an island of all of its monsters and loot provides a great sense of pride in your army. Traveling to the next island, and observing the new landscape and atmosphere, results in a sense of wonder. And finally, those feelings of pride and wonder are dashed when you realize the armies on the new island completely outclass your own. Of course, that's what makes the game so much fun.

Armored Princess - Review @ Eurogamer

by Dhruin, 10:04

Alec Meer writes this review of Armoured Princess for Eurogamer, which carries a score of 8/10.  He clearly loves the game but some ever-so-slight disappointment comes through, with this one having lost some of the "absurdist charm" of the original:

I'm both the best and the worst guy to be reviewing this. The best because last year's strategy/role-playing curio King's Bounty: The Legend was comfortably my game of the year, and one I bent the ear of anyone unlucky enough to be in the same room as me about. The worst because, well, that. I know the thing inside out. Armored Princess is a standalone expansion for it, and as such it's pretty much the same game. If I'd come to it without already knowing how good King's Bounty is, I'd have been grabbing people in the street, staring at them with wild eyes, shaking them by the shoulders and shouting, "Princess! Armored Princess! Omi god it's amazing it's a proper PC game you have to play it you have to play it whoops I just had a trouser malfunction."

It is a proper PC game. You do have to play it. I have just had a trouser malfunction. It's just... it's the same game again. When you can pick up the first game (well, not the first - The Legend was a semi-remake of the old 1990s King's Bounty) for less than a tenner, it's very hard to tell you to spend £30 on this one instead. And that's the nub of it - if you haven't played the first King's Bounty, get that. There isn't anything in Armored Princess that's worth spending an extra £20 on, unless you particularly get off on inventory screens showing a girl in chainmail that cuts away to reveal an impossibly flat stomach. She might be an Armored Princess, but she's certainly not a Well-Armored Princess. As for whether you should pick this up if you do know King's Bounty intimately, I'll get into that shortly.

Armored Princess - Impressions #2 @ RPS

by Dhruin, 11:27

The impressions of Armoured Princess continue at Rock, Paper, Shotgun with Alec Meer tackling the major difference in this expansion: the pet dragon.

Maybe it’s a bit too cute, too. It’s a baby dragon, all giant feet and eyes, it falls asleep after its cast one of its powers, it picks apples from a nearby tree that seems to travel everywhere with it while it watches you fight, and it keeps cuddling up to a mysterious snail. I would love it if said snail turned out to be the game’s ultimate big bad. It’s up to something, I’m sure of it. Its inital powers involve a bicycle kick to the face of an unsuspecting enemy and digging up treasure chests like a puppydog retrieving an old bone. It’s cute. Cute-cutey-wutey-cute. I’ve called it Lord Ragington IV in the hope of making it seem a bit less cute, but somehow that’s only made things worse. Well, not worse. Just… cute.

Armored Princess - First Impressions @ RPS

by Dhruin, 19:53

Alec Meer over at Rock, Paper, Shotgun has penned some early impressions of Armoured Princess.  He finds there is less narrative creativity but more polish this time around - at least, so far:

With the exception of some over-enthusiastic lore that goes on and on and on and on and on, it feels significantly slicker than KB did in most every regard. It’s less fun narratively, but more fun, more liberated as a strategy/roleplaying game. Remember how quickly you got roundly beaten in that first area, how you’d be running desperately away from roaming griffons and archers for ages? Yeah, none of that. AP eased me in a lot more gently. I guess knowing the ins and outs of its combat helped a fair bit, but it was a while until I hit something tagged as essentially unbeatable at my current strength.

Armored Princess - Trailers @ GameSpot

by Dhruin, 11:21

Lucky Day points out GameSpot has seven gameplay videos for King's Bounty: ArmouredPrincess and we've only previously covered a couple, so a few of them must be new (at least to us!).

Armored Princess - Review @ Hooked Gamers

by Dhruin, 20:07

I think this is the first English review of Armoured Princess, with Hooked Gamers awarding 8.2/10.  The article doesn't seem to reference the first game much, so it's hard to compare against the first game based on this piece.  A sample:

King's Bounty: Armored Princess has a forgettable story and dated graphics that seem borrowed from much older medieval fantasy titles. However, its gameplay is superb. The turn-based combat is the main component of this game and fortunately its strongest draw. While easy to learn, it is deeply strategic and very satisfying, especially when defeating an army that is much stronger than your own.

Armored Princess - Russian Review Round up

by Skavenhorde, 14:20

King's Bounty: Armored Princess will be released soon. With that in mind I found a few reviews for King's Bounty: Armored Princess at 1C forums. A word of warning, they are all in russian and quite old.

  • Stopgame score: 5/5 - A glowing review of every aspect of the game. They feel the game is a labor of love suitable for casual and hardcore gamers. In addition, they recommend it for children who love to read and solve problems.
  • Asolute Games 1.5 score: 95% - This one was not as easy to understand as the previous review. Too many 'lost in translation' parts to it. From what I can tell they were impressed with the length of the game (around 30 hours on normal difficulty), the stability of it, and found it an excellent game.
  • GamesLife score: 9/10 -  Another great review. Overall, they felt that the difficulty was balanced perfectly and that everything that made King's Bounty great was preserved in Armored Princess.
  • GameGuru score: 88% - Another rave review. They were very impressed with the length of the game and were hesitant to call it an expansion due to the content and the 30 hours of gameplay.

RPGWatch Feature - King's Bounty: Armored Princess Impressions

by Dhruin, 12:10

One of our last articles from the German GamesCom convention, Myrthos brings us an overview of Kings Bounty: Armored Princess after meeting with 1C.  Here's a snip:

There are even more interesting changes - like you not having a wife anymore, which makes sense as you play a female hero. But Princesses don't carry too much themselves, so Amelie gets to choose a boyfriend of her liking. The boyfriend carries all the heavy stuff, such as armor and weapons and you get to choose from more than one possible boyfriend in the game. If you happen to find one that suits you better than the one you have now, you just replace him. And as you are not officially married in the game, you don't lose half of your assets when you dump your boyfriend. He does, however, take the equipment you gave him to wear with him when he wanders off, so you better strip him first before saying goodbye.

Armored Princess - Official Site Launched

by Dhruin, 00:06

1C sent us a press release announcing www.kings-bounty.com/eng/ has been updated for Armored Princess.  Screens, wallpaper, a video, features and a FAQ are all on offer.  Here's a snip from the accompanying PR:

King's Bounty: Armored Princess is a sequel to the critically acclaimed King's Bounty: The Legend. Players will take on the role of Princess Amelie who travels around the world of Teana and searches for the renowned knight, and her mentor, Bill Gilbert. This new world of King's Bounty: Armored Princess is full of mysteries and dangers. The new character, the Princess, will encounter horrible creatures, huge monstrous bosses and a new race, the bloodthirsty Lizards. As in the multi-award winning first game, the player has many options to resist these new enemies. Various new skills and characteristics of Amelie as well as her chance to fly will help her overcome the hordes attacking the kingdom. The Princess is also accompanied by a Pet Dragon, at the very beginning small and amusing, but its abilities develop steadily until it becomes an incredible ally. He will do his best to protect the Princess during the battles, starting with easy blows and treasure hunting and finishing with battle rage and volcano summoning.

Thanks also to Leth for a similar submission.

Armored Princess - Preview @ Hooked Gamers

by Dhruin, 22:57

King's Bounty: Armored Princess has been previewed at Hooked Gamers in a good little overview article:

Many of the old races will return. Humans, Dwarves, Elves, Orcs, Undead and Demons will all make an appearance. In addition to these six, Armored Princess features a new race, Pangolins. These lizard-like creatures have particularly bloodthirsty traditions and are among the most ancient races in the realm. Pangolin warriors are terrifying in combat and, as such, much sought after allies. They are difficult to control but those who are able to find common ground with this fearsome race will find them to be strong allies. In addition to the new race, Armored Princess boasts 5 new bosses, 10 new spells and a new level-cap of 50. There will also be new abilities and talents as well as about 50 new items.

King's Bounty: Armored Princess - Interview @ CRPG.ru

by Dhruin, 23:00

CRPG.ru writes they have an interview with Dimitryi Gusarov on King's Bounty: Armored Princess.  Being in Russian means it's inaccessible to most of us, so they sent along this snip and a link to some exclusive screens:

Here's a translated extract:

CRPG.RU: We know that the prototype of Amelie was the heroine of the film of the same name, by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, and the dragon Drako resembles Stitch from the cartoon of " Lilo & Stitch". Tell us: what else served as your source of inspiration?

Dmitryi: Everything which surrounds people, serves them as a source of inspiration. Amelie - this romantic and clean type, will be similar in the game, and vain and merry dragon, pocket monster, approaches very closely the role of the toy of the princess, as well as her defender. The prototypes of these characters are obvious, but there is a set of smaller things, like type of gremlin in the combat robot from the fantasy film of "Labyrinth", or the atmosphere in new Verona from the anime of "Romeos and Juliet". We, as always, will try to entertain players with a wide horizon and the developed associative thinking.

by Myrthos, 12:49

We've reported about this add-on before, but here is the official annoucnement from 1C:

King's Bounty: Armored Princess in development

Major Add-On for the Multi-Award Winning Title

MOSCOW, Russia November 11, 2008 - Leading Eastern and Central European publisher 1C Company and Katauri Interactive today announced development of King's Bounty: Armored Princess.  This will be an add-on to the critically acclaimed King’s Bounty: The Legend. Players will take on the role of Princess Amelie who travels around the world of Teana and searches for the renowned knight, and her tutor, Bill Gilbert.

This new world of King’s Bounty: Armored Princess is full of mysteries and dangers.  The new character, the Princess, will encounter horrible creatures, huge monstrous bosses and a new race, the bloodthirsty Pangolins.  As in the multi-award winning game on which this expansion is based, the player has many options to resist these new enemies. Various new skills and characteristics of Amelie as well as her chance to fly will help her overcome the hordes attacking the kingdom. The Princess is also accompanied by a tamed dragon, at the very beginning small and amusing, but its abilities develop steadily until it becomes an incredible ally. He will do his best to protect the Princess during the battles, starting with easy blows and treasure hunting and finishing with battle rage and volcano summoning.

The Add-on will contain the following new features:

  • New fascinating story-line and a whole new continent to explore
  • A new female character to play – Princess Amelie
  • Medals giving bonuses can be received for special achievements
  • Tamed dragon which becomes more powerful as the player does
