Thanks to its wildly customizable weapons and versatile Iron Man-like jetpack, Outcast: A New Beginning actually does feel like the start of an open-world adventure that’s different from pretty much everything else out there. It’s clearly not a big-budget game, but the freedom it gives you and its ability to laugh at itself make up for a lot of its weaknesses, such as character animations and some overly long questlines filled with busywork. Once you get to know the Talans and appreciate their goofy sci-fi babble, this becomes a charming and colorful world to spend a few dozen hours blasting robots in.

The original Outcast was revolutionary. Released in 1999, it was one of the earliest truly open world games and featured a distinctive voxel-based graphical style that really stood out. An enhanced version appeared on Steam in 2014 whilst a full remake was released in 2017 – although we were less than impressed with that effort. Nevertheless it’s a testament to how fondly remembered the game is that it has had such a pattern of remakes and rereleases. Now, seven years after that last remake, Cutter Slade returns for a new adventure in Outcast – A New Beginning.
