Rogue Wizards - Released on GOG

by Silver, 19:53

Rogue Wizards, a turn-based roguelike, has released on GOG.

Something cool for the magically gifted.
Rogue Wizards, a charming turn-based roguelike where you raid densely populated dungeons full of amazing treasures, is available now for Windows and Mac, DRM-free on GOG.com with GOG Galaxy support for achievements and a 15% launch discount.
You cannot isolate magic. Despite what the aristocracy of Rilfanor believes, it can materialize both in its "pureblood" population and among the less privileged members of society. Sometimes, those magically-tuned individuals might even belong to the fairer sex! The scandal!
But once these silly misconceptions are put aside, it's time to deal with the real problem: the evil monsters dwelling inside those randomly generated dungeons. Outfit your fighter with the latest in enchanted equipment, gather materials to craft even more powerful items, and prepare to do turn-based battle against scary monsters with unique traits and abilities. You can choose your spells from six distinct schools of magic and wreak havoc as you delve deeper and deeper into the uncharted depths of the ever-changing dungeons.
Indulge in your dungeon-crawling instincts and send your Rogue Wizards to destroy hordes of monsters and hoard piles of loot, DRM-free on GOG.com.
The 15% discount will last until December 11, 10:59 PM UTC.

Rogue Wizards - Review @ GameSpew

by Hiddenx, 09:03

GameSpew has reviewed the dungegon crawler Rogue Wizards:

Rogue Wizards Review

Deep into a dungeon, surrounded by foes, allies defeated, and health low, I fear my time is up. My health bar is depleting, the dungeon’s boss can smell my fear, and I must act quickly. On my turn, I cast a spell, and I’m transported several tiles away with my health somewhat replenished. My allies are subsequently revived, mirroring the rekindling belief that I can win this battle. I pull out my bow and defeat two enemies, the tide of battle is turning. Similarly, my allies each slay an enemy and only the boss remains. Over the next couple of minutes, an epic turn-based battle takes place, a clash that will become legend in the hearts of the inhabitants of Antarit, the hidden, mysterious city-hub.

It is encounters like these that define Rogue Wizards. These fantastic, nail-biting moments of tension create a palpable sense of apprehension leading into each new dungeon. The fear of the unknown, heightened by procedurally generated levels, lends itself well to the game’s great moment-to-moment gameplay, something which is complemented well by solid gameplay systems and light RPG mechanics, despite the game’s frequent difficulty spikes.

Score: 7/10

Positive

  • Memorable, self-created moments of excitement
  • Satisfying blend of loot and exploration
  • Brilliant combat

Negative

  • Derivative story
  • Difficulty spikes

Rogue Wizards - Release Day

by Hiddenx, 07:42

The RPG Rogue Wizards will be released today:

loading...

The Council oversees the elam families, aristocrats who are descended from the first humans in Rilfanor, and the banlits, who were originally people born without magical abilities. The Guild has never admitted banlits because of their lack of magical capacity; and they've never admitted women because they believed women were too weak-minded to control such power.

Now, many generations later, the elam magic is weakening, and latent magic talent has reappeared among the banlit population. Many of the elam are in denial, but some of them want to take the radical step of allowing banlits, including women, into the Guild.

In your quest you'll explore randomly generated dungeons, collect treasures, master magic, avoid traps, solve puzzles, and of course cleanse the dungeons of all the evil minions within. Every dungeon is unique, no two locations will ever be the same.

It's not all dungeon-crawl. Feel at home in your very own Wizard Tower where you can enhance and customize the way you play by building a thriving town, brewing your own reagents, crafting or buying your own gear, powering up your magic, and recruiting help.

Rogue Wizards - Review @ Twinfinite

by Hiddenx, 11:32

Twinfinite has reviewed the upcoming rogue-like Rogue Wizards:

Rogue Wizards Review

Rogue Wizards on PC

There’s always been a certain something about the “roguelike” genre that’s appealed to me. Rogue Wizards, a turn-based RPG packed with elements of this often-used approach, is no different. A colorful, lively world and plenty of randomly-generated dungeons and loot to comb through, Rogue Wizards presents a somewhat lighter take on the formula. Of course, a lighter take doesn’t mean that the task of saving the world is going to be easy.

[...]

While its story and approach play it safe, the smooth gameplay and optional “perma-death” Hard Mode still bring plenty to enjoy. With a wide variety of weapons and spells to choose from and a unique experience behind each randomly-generated door, it keeps things fresh without stepping too far outside of established comfort zones.

Score: 4/5 – Great

Pros:

  • Great variety of weapons and spells.
  • Randomly-generated dungeons.
  • Bright, vibrant aesthetic.

Cons:

  • Story lacks originality.

Rogue Wizards - To be released Next Week

by Myrthos, 12:11

News reached us that Rogue Wizards will be released next week the 27th of September. Here is its trailer.

loading...

Rogue Wizards is built on dungeon crawling and procedurally generated playthroughs; yet beneath the chasms of these core details are a few fantastic spins on the genre. Combat is turn-based which adds a more clinical thought process to keeping your character alive on a deep run. This is also supplemented by building out your own assets with a town-building mechanic in the Wizard’s Sanctuary of Rogue Wizards. As you rescue lost NPCs in dungeons, they’ll move their shops into town which gives you access to new spells and weapons. Sell off your excess loot to bring shop prices down for a chance to even score sweet stuff for free!

Rogue Wizards - Impressions

by Hiddenx, 08:09

RPGamer checked out the Indie games Rogue Wizards and A Curious Tale:

A Curious Tale

[...]

The game controls with either keyboard and mouse (with WASD movement) or a controller. Although several types of potions can be crafted — including straight-up offensive and defensive potions, healing draughts, and other versatile potions — these are limited, with up to ten of each being taken on explorations. However, being a crafty young lady, you can pit enemies against each other, helping to reduce direct usage of offensive resources. During my demo I positioned a spider to spit poison on nearby enemies, which defeated them without using up one of my precious cache of potions!

[...]

Rogue Wizards

[...]

As the story progresses, players will be able to rescue NPCs from the dungeons, who will move into town and create buildings with new services. The more quests that the player undertakes, the more they can level up these NPCs and thus their buildings. During the main story, players will be resurrected in town with no penalty. However, for those who desire a more hardcore experience, a gauntlet mode is also available to test those with the mettle to challenge an increasingly dangerous set of dungeons.

The game is strictly keyboard and mouse, with no controller support planned at this time. Launching on September 20, 2016, and clocking in at about ten hours to complete the main story, those who want to continue playing have more ways to challenge themselves.

Rogue Wizards - Alpha and November Update

by Hiddenx, 20:08

Here's the November update for Rogue Wizards:

Alpha + November 2015 Update

Greetings Wizards,

We’re happy to announce that Rogue Wizards closed alpha program has begun. If you backed us on Kickstarter at the Shaman level or higher, you’ll be receiving a Steam key to join and play the alpha over the next couple of weeks to try out the game and provide us feedback and report issues. We’ll be adding users into the alpha in groups every week; so if you don’t receive your key right away don’t worry, it will arrive soon.

Missed the Kickstarter but still want to play the open beta when its ready? Subscribe to our Spellbind Studios Newsletter and we’ll be recruiting players from that list to join the open beta in 2016.

What’s in the Alpha?

  • Play through the main storyline until defeating Gaderian, the Guild Wizard of Fire
  • Build the Wizard Tower, Blacksmith, Armorer, and Jeweler
  • Run through 4 basic story quests plus random dungeons are available after building the Armory
  • Find several item types with dozens of randomized magic properties
  • Fight against 9 different monsters (and a few more that are incomplete with just melee attacks)
  • Learn low to mid level spells across 6 schools of magic
  • Play through the randomized Dungeon, Cavern, and Cosmic environments

What’s coming next?

  • Storyline quests, NPCs, and structures beyond the Rift of Fire
  • Creating special and magical attack for monsters and bosses that don’t have them yet
  • Colorable character variations
  • Town presentation experimentations

Now on to our regular development update for November 2015.

Over the past month we’ve been working very hard to get ready for the alpha. The biggest change in the gameplay comes in how the player acquires spells. Spells now rarely drop in the dungeons and instead the player acquires spell points when they level up. Spell points can be spent at the Wizard Tower in town to upgrade existing or learn new spells. Rogue Wizards - Development Update

by Hiddenx, 00:21

Rogue Wizards is now visible in the Steam shop. Here's the September development update:

September Development Update

Greetings Wizards,

During the month of September a lot of artwork has come and is starting to really fill out the content for the main storyline of the game.

Alex has completed the final artwork for the Owl pet and now he’s ready to be animated. We’re still not quite sure what kind of help or abilities the pets are going to have, but we’re looking forward to your ideas and feedback as the alpha and beta programs start in a month or two.

We’ve also spent a huge chunk of time getting some new environment visuals online, but they’re not quite ready to show yet; So we decided to give you a little behind the scenes look at the tech used to create the environment and game world. Below is a screenshot of how all the 2D images are laid out in the 3D game engine Unity.

Normally the camera is looking straight on the images making the set of 2D images appear to be 3D due to the forced perspective in the art. However, here we’ve altered the camera perspective and position so you can see what the world looks like when viewed from the side which just a bunch of 2D perfectly flat images.

Although most of the environment is built by the random generator, we also have a set of tools that allows us to create small pockets of a level using a hand placed layout. This screenshot shows a small arena we’re building for a boss battle in the Rift of Fire using hand created placement for floors, walls, and all deco objects that can then be inserted into a larger level by the random map generator.

Below are the development highlights and details from the past month. Visit the Spellbind Studios September 2015 development blog post spellbindstudios.com to see the full on details or talk about the changes in our Online Forums forum.spellbindstudios.com.

Rogue Wizards - Cosmic Magic Update

by Couchpotato, 04:38

Spellbind Studios next update for Rogue Wizard is about Cosmic Magic.

Cosmic Magic: The Singularity Spell

We’re thrilled to see all the excitement from the Rogue Wizards Kickstarter community. We couldn’t have gotten this far without the help and support of fans. Thank you.

As Rogue Wizards moves forward, we feel it’s important to share news, updates, and answer any questions. Have a specific question? Send us a message or leave a comment through the Kickstarter page.

The Singularity Spell

For our first update we wanted to showcase the brand new cosmic Singularity spell. Singularity is acquired once the player reaches a higher level in Cosmic Magic, and is a powerful spell to have at your disposal.

Casting this spell on any visible location in the world opens up a portal to the cosmos and summons a cosmic singularity. Once it arrives, the massive gravity of the singularity will pull and deform the landscape around it, after which cosmic rays emerge attaching themselves to nearby targets and then pull them inside.

Rogue Wizards - A New Fantasy RPG Game

by Couchpotato, 05:26

Rogue Wizards is another kickstarter looking to get funded by a studio called Spellbind Studios made of veteran developers of various games.

Brought to you by developers and creators of Diablo 3, Marvel Heroes, Command & Conquer: Generals, Nox, Nox Quest, Hellgate: London, Dungeons & Dragons Online, Lord of the Rings Online, Might and Magic 4, 5, and 6, Heroes of Might and Magic 1 & 2, Hammer of the Gods, Nightmare Creatures, Dark Reign, Mechwarrior Mercenaries.

Here is the usual video, and game description that goes with the post.

Rogue Wizards invites players to battle creatures, collect loot, master magic, and build a Wizard Tower in a rogue-like, dungeon-crawling, town-building RPG. At the heart of Rogue Wizards’ unique approach to these game genres, lies its dungeon mode. Featuring procedurally generated environments and loot, no two dungeons or weapons will be the same, offering players an incredible amount of re-playability and character progression as they uncover the mystery behind a series of portals appearing in the world. Although combat features a traditional turn-based combat system, fans of the genre will notice a remarkable increase in terms of pacing; battles feel fast and furious while still requiring strategy and planning.

In between rounds of exploring dungeons, slaying creatures, and discovering new loot, players can also look forward to a complex and rewarding Town Building experience at the Wizard Tower. Here, players can enhance and customize the way they play by building a thriving town, brewing their own reagents, crafting and buying their own gear, powering up their magic, and recruiting help in order to further strengthen their Wizard for diving into deeper and more difficult dungeons.
