Space Rangers HD - Update, Screens

by Dhruin, 11:50

Contrary to previous statements 1C won't be releasing Space Rangers HD simultaneously in Russian and English. From their Facebook page the Russian version should have been released by now but the English version has been delayed:

It’s time for an official statement to clear any confusion: March 15, 2013 is the release date of the Russian version of the game. Due to a large amount of translation the English version will be announced later.

Some new screens were also released in February.

Space Rangers HD - Development Update

by Dhruin, 21:28

Here's a development update for Space Rangers HD from a couple of days ago. This post announces a (surprising) simultaneous release in Russian and English and we should see it this first quarter:

We saw few comments to previous entries, where you guys were asking about how things are going. Well, we were working hard for weeks, but now we have time to share some details with you!

At the moment the game is almost done and being translated to English and other languages. We believe that this translation will be much better than previous one in Reboot.

Release version of the game will be available sometime in Q1 of 2013 simultaneously in Russian and English. You will be able to purchase the game in retail stores and through Steam as well.

Stay tuned, follow us on Twitter and Facebook, and you will never miss a thing!

Space Rangers HD - Playable at Igromir

by Dhruin, 22:34

I imagine the number of our readers who can make it to the Russian gaming show Igromir to check out a playable build of Space Ranger HD is rather small but for the rest of us, it hopefully indicates good progress on the game:

We are glad to announce that playable build of Space Rangers HD A War Apart will be presented at “Igromir-2012“, which will take place on October 4th-7th  at “Crocus Expo” center in Moscow, Russia.

And as a cherry on top of the pie, you will be able to meet some of game’s developers in person! Don’t waste your chance!

Space Rangers HD - Interview @ Play Scifi

by Dhruin, 01:20

There's an interview with Sergey Gerasev from 1C at Play Scifi to talk about the Space Rangers 2 HD project:

PSF: Sounds promising. What sort of new content can we expect in A War Apart? More of the same?

Sergey Gerasev: As I have mentioned above A War Apart is a new side scenario. In addition to war with the Dominators one of the pirate clans starts its war against the Coalition. Players can now choose from additional options: become a bloody pirate without honor or try to work as an agent under cover. As for the main scenario we have new text quests, planetary battles, ships, devices, etc. Battles in the hyperspace (arcade battles) now have a special button in the main menu for gamers who want to play them apart outside the main game.

PSF: Why did you decide to expand piracy in the game? Was it something you felt was lacking from previous releases?

Sergey Gerasev: The entire history of mankind clearly states that in wartimes bad guys become a powerful force. It was easy to imagine their urge to bring anarchy to the world.

PSF: Fans seem keen to have as many new text quests as possible. Will you be providing them?

Sergey Gerasev: Apart from the newly made text quests we also have some quests, which were never translated for the original game. We will try to include them as well.

Space Rangers HD - Official FAQ

by Dhruin, 00:17

1C has releasd a FAQ for Space Rangers HD, mostly responding to accusations they will b releasing the same game for the third time and similar questions:

Q: Are you so out of fresh ideas that you’re going to sell the same game third time already? Isn’t there already a free expansion pack with HD-patch?
A: We’ve always wanted to work on SR franchise, and when 1C Publishing gave us the green light, we happily agreed. And no, “A War Apart” isn’t the same “Revolution” made by some of SNK-Games’ employees back in 2009.

Q: Are Elemental Games or Katauri Interactive, original developers of SR series, somehow involved?
A: No, they are not, though they’ve supported idea of the project.

Q: How about full-scale sequel? How about Space Rangers 3?
A: That’s something you should ask owner of the Space Rangers franchise – 1C Publishing company.

Q: Will game be published for MacOS, iOS or Google Android?
A: Our top priority is PC release. We do not plan to port the game to any other platform at the moment.

Q: When game will be released and for what price?
A: Retail prices are TBA. Estimated release date is 2012 Q4.

Q: What’s new besides graphics and technical improvements?
A: New sideline story about space pirates, which will allow the gamer to either play as real bad guy or to feel true “undercover agent” way of game.

Space Rangers 2 - Reboot Gets UK Retail Release

by Dhruin, 19:58

Excalibur Publishing sent out this press release, announcing a retail release of Space Rangers 2: Reboot - at least in the UK.  It's been available from Impulse for some time now but if you'd prefer a boxed version, it's set for October 30th:

Excalibur Publishing Ltd. to introduce upgrade of fantastic multi-genre PC adventure Space Rangers to the market

Space Rangers 2: Reboot is the enhanced version of the highly anticipated sequel to the multi-genre computer adventure Space Rangers. Besides being packed with new text quests, galaxy map sectors and new graphics, the game now offers all planetary battles in full 3D.

The game is set in the year 3300 with combat robots known as The Dominators wreaking havoc across the galaxy. It is up to you and a coalition of five allied races to destroy The Dominators and restore peace in the galaxy.

You become a Ranger, and once you have chosen your character and race, and get your ship and equipment, you engage in a real world where your choices and actions determine the path you take. The player can choose to become an evil pirate, making trades between outlaws easier, or become a hero and have a whole different reaction to your character. You are also not tied to a single character, but can change professions throughout the course of the game. The outcome is wholly unpredictable and any side could win.

Robert Stallibrass of Excalibur Publishing says: "At Excalibur Publishing we believe Space Rangers 2 is a great game. For those players who have already discovered it, Space Rangers stays on their hard drive for a long, long time - and there are not too many games you can say that about!. "

The product will retail at £24.99. Further information is available at www.excalibur-publishing.com . Space Rangers 2: Reboot will officially hit the shelves of retailers on 30th October 2009.

Space Rangers 2 - Reloaded Review @ ComputerGames.ro

by Dhruin, 09:38

ComputerGames.ro has a review of Space Rangers 2: Reloaded, although the article approaches it as new product rather than comparing Reloaded to the original release.  The score is 93% and here's a bit on text adventures:

But perhaps the most exciting type of mission is the so-called adventure. These are nothing but text puzzles which can be solved by selecting the presented course of action. Variety is again the key-word here, and you will need to use logic, mathematics, memory and imagination in order to solve them.

If for example winning a rock competition, with only a few hundred rockadollars to your disposal, or winning a motorcycle race may be somewhat normal, the slightly disturbed imagination of the producers can be observed in other such adventures. Such as the test for a sex-change, where you need to let yourself be transformed into a six-eyed raccoon, and battle your peers. Or cooking a gross-pizza for a hungry Maloq.

Space Rangers 2 - Arthur Stone and the Rusty Nail

by Dhruin, 23:48

If you haven't played Space Rangers 2, this After Action Report / blog at roBurky illustrates the game's capacity for creative approaches.  Introducing Arthur Stone:

I’ve been playing a lot of Space Rangers 2 lately. I first played it after reading Kieron Gillen’s Eurogamer review three years ago. But I bought the complete version recently with added expansion pack as part of the Impulse sale.

I had completed the game before, so this time I wanted to try something a little different. I decided that I would try a crazy plan I’d had the last time I played, but never seriously put into practice.

I would become the best space ranger in the galaxy. But I would do it by assassinating every ranger above me in the rankings.

Space Rangers 2 - Expansion Coming to TGN

by Dhruin, 22:13

Back in September the Elemental boards had news of a "Gold" edition of Space Rangers 2 that would include additions and improvements:

New features:

- 20 new text quests!
- 27 new maps for planetary battles!
- New government tasks.
- New equipment and unique hull designs, including three super spaceships.
- New game modes: step-by-step progress through text quests and planetary battles.
- Expanded interface of ship’s hold and information center.

...and a few days ago, Stardock quietly let forum readers know TotalGaming.Net would have the exclusive on the "expansion pack":

Hey guys - just a heads-up on the down-low that TotalGaming.net will have the exclusive on the Space Rangers 2 expansion pack.   More info should be available in a couple weeks.

No other info, so we are assuming the expansion content is the same as the additions to the Gold version, but we'll have to wait for details - including the versions this TGN release will be compatible with.

Space Rangers 2: Review @ Armchair Empire

by Dhruin, 22:15
8.8/10 is the score for Elemental's Space Rangers 2 in The Armchair Empire's review:
Either as part of a mission or part of the exploration process, the element that sets Space Rangers 2 apart from its galactic exploration and conquest brethren are its mini-games. Invading hostile planets enables a great RTS mini-game that includes the ability to take control of a mech 1st person shooter style. Slipping into a black hole fires up a old school arcade action game that reminded me of the early vector classic Omega Race. I enjoyed all of the mini-games, but by far my favorite were the text adventure ones. For instance, in the aforementioned scenario where your ranger is sent to prison, the game gives you an option of playing his or her experiences there. If you choose to do this, you are faced with a simple text adventure in the Scott Adama mode. Each day the Ranger is faced with a number of choices. Which choices are made will determine just how damaging or rewarding the stay in prison will be. I found the whole experience charming. It was great to drop out of the modern gaming world and into the past for a few minutes every now and then.

Space Rangers 2: Review @ Gamepyre

by Dhruin, 23:44
Gamepyre has reviewed Space Rangers 2, awarding 86%:
Role-playing: the RPG aspect of this title comes through the types of ships that can be bought, the level and power of the equipment which they can hold, and of course, the six talents of your pilot. These six talents are Accuracy, Mobility, Technical, Trade, Charisma, and Leadership. Beginning with the types of ships available, there are essentially three classes a fighter, freighter and merchant. Fighter crafts often feature the best armor, highest speeds, and most weapon mounts, but unfortunately have terrible space for cargo. Unlike the nimble fighters, the freighters are usually large and slow, making up for their relative inability to defend themselves with tremendous room inside for cargo. For those players who need a mix of the two, merchant class ships provide just enough for the player on the go, allowing them to hold up in a dogfight against pirates trying to drain the load of fresh cargo that's ready to go. Dependant on your location within the star system, and the design of the ships, different equipment will be available to you, which, of course, will take up more room, but allow for things such as much greater firepower, a huge fuel capacity, the ability to fly far and fast, and shields so that you can take a beating without skipping a beat. These features will be crucial for players who are trying to finish the game, as the dominators are an unrelenting bunch, and considering how fast the very first waves of them can cream novices, I'd be willing to wager that the advanced forms of their life can tear even experts to shreds. Now, a perfect ship will be nothing against this race unless the pilot knows what hea "!s doing, or has a fleet available. Dependant on those six talents listed off, each pilot will be able to do his own thing, whether it's going in single handedly and ripping a fleet apart, or sending a wave of his buddies in. Dependant on what you're doing to finish the game, it may be worth balancing your skills, as they will only expand with a certain amount of experience, which is awarded for kills, trades, and successful missions. As the experience points pile up, and friends flock to the wing, your skills will grow too, but just make sure to keep it all in balance, or youa'll soon fall victim to your own success.

Space Rangers 2: Review @ ESCMag

by Dhruin, 22:22
ESCMag serves up areview of Space Rangers 2, while wondering where Europe is. The score is 8/10 and here's the summary:
Space Rangers 2: Rise of the Dominators was a surprise only because the game came out of nowhere (or Europe) and features and impressive amount of dynamic content allowing gamers to really dive deep into their own persona and live it out virtually. There's quite a bit to see and do here and the immense replay value and RPG elements provide an incentive to keep on flying. While the game won't win any awards in its presentation, it certainly shall for being one of 2006's sleeper hits, as long as we're allowed to skip over the introduction.

Space Rangers 2: Review @ Ent Depot

by Dhruin, 02:33
8.5/10 is the score for Space Rangers 2 in The Entertainment Depot's review:
There is something respectable about Space Rangers 2. It might not have the best music, the shiniest graphics, the most detailed combat system, or even a polished localization, but it's got so much character and stuff. Truly an everything-but-the-kitchen sink title, Space Rangers 2 gives you space exploration and combat, trading, Subspace-style arcade sections, text-based adventures, and even real-time strategy portions. Everything that has been implemented isn't left to find its own way into the design; even when something is fairly basic, it is given a little extra to make it unique and worth your time. This is one of those titles that people bring up when they talk about games of yore, when imagination and character met with an ambitious and well-executed design.

Space Rangers 2 - Review @ Games First

by Kalia, 20:36
The latest review for Space Rangers 2: Rise of the Dominators is up for your pleasure at Games First. Scoring 4/5 stars, the reviewer said:
Any old-school players that enjoyed Pirates! Gold on the Genesis will be right at home here. The same turn based exploration and combat, the loose goals and numerous means to the end are here in vivid color and detail if you can withstand the steep difficulty and learning curve. The addictive and something-for-everybody nature of gameplay, plus the budget price tag and inclusion of the original Space Rangers, make this a wise purchase for any PC gamer.

Space Rangers 2: Review @ 1Up

by Kalia, 15:47
1 Uphas a review of Space Rangers 2 today. 1 Up editors rate the game an 8.0/10, while users rate it a 7.8, giving it an overall score of 7.9.
The only serious flaw of the game is kind of a subjective one. There are some optional tutorial missions when the game starts, but it's not long before the player is thrust into the universe without much in the way of hints as to where they need to be and when. Wandering too far from home too early can result in repeated ass kicking. It's the usual penalty paid by open-ended games, and it makes for one of those infrequent modern cases where reading the manual is a must and easy mode is actually worth playing for a bit. For those who don't like being babysat this is hardly a flaw at all, of course.

Space Rangers 2: Review @ Games First

by Kalia, 02:26
Games First has posted their review of the recently released, Space Rangers 2. Giving it a VERY nice score of 4/5 stars, the reviewer said this:
Space Rangers 2: Rise of the Dominators really surprised me. The depth and breadth of the game is on par or grander than Freelancer or even The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, but lacks the internal storyline to project the player toward the end. The goal of defeating the Dominators isn't easy, and requires lots of preparation, upgrading, questing, and discovery that open-ended games thrive on, and that Rangers 2 provides. The amount of things to do in Space Rangers 2 is staggering, sometimes daunting, but the friendly training mode (be sure to go through it) allows players unfamiliar with the genre to get into it. Rangers 2 allows for near limitless gameplay with no hand-holding, making it truly an epic, addictive experience. Though it has some flaws, the scale and depth of gameplay make Space Rangers 2: Rise of the Dominators one of the best space adventure games to come along in years.

Space Rangers 2: Review @ Game Chronicles

by Dhruin, 07:16
Game Chronicles has posted their opinion of Space Rangers 2, rating Elemental Games' space trading strat-RPG at 8.5/10:
Often times, you may be a tad lost as to where you are supposed to be during the game. Obviously, the non-linear aspects of Space Rangers 2 may lose some gamers early on, but once you start running a few missions, the natural ebb and flow of the living universe, will force the gamer to adapt. For example, if you destroy a ship, you can salvage parts of it, to either sell, or use on your own vessel. This in turns adds items and/or money to the dynamic economy, which affects future purchases or sells. Now extrapolate that across countless star clusters, and you just have to say Wow

Space Rangers 2: Review @ GameZone

by Dhruin, 06:49
8.8/10 is the score for Space Rangers 2 at GameZone:
Overall, the game is simple to figure out and jump into, but ita's hard to master and even more difficult to quit playing. There are literally tons of things that you can do and get into, and the game leaves it so open ended that you can play it multiple times without it ever being the same game twice. Add in the mini games, and little add-ons like playing out a prison sentence or a pilot-ranking system that allows you to hire Rangers ranked lower than you to act as your wingmen and you have a solid title that will offer tons of sci-fi enjoyment for a LONG time. While it may be a little slow for you die-hard action gamers, those of you who enjoy these strategic games and have the time to sit down and get wrapped up in it should definitely check it out.
