The DioField Chronicle - Review @ Destructoid

by Hiddenx, 17:09

Destructoid checked out The DioField Chronicle:

Review: The DioField Chronicle

You thought it was turn based, but it was me, DioField

The DioField Chronicle is an odd one among the cavalcade of tactics we’ve seen this year. It’s real-time, rather than turn-based; it’s about tight, compact skirmishes rather than drawn-out battles. DioField mixes wyvern and rifles, swords and sorcery, and even some airships for good measure.

Throughout the 20-ish hours it took me to finish The DioField Chronicle, there are some pretty cool concepts and ideas on display, though they’re not always framed the best. There’s a solid story, but some odd choices in direction. DioField is an interesting strategy game to play, even when it’s not at its best.

Jade in the rough

The DioField Chronicle feels destined to be called a hidden gem years from now. Despite some faltering and misgivings, I can’t help but enjoy the loop. Sending your units into combat, raining magical power down on enemies as your cavalry charges in and assassin tears up the backline, just feels good in DioField.

It hasn’t hit the heights of other strategy RPG contenders, but The DioField Chronicle shows a lot of promise. It’s different, it’s engaging, and it’s got a fast pace that moves from battle to battle. I felt like I got a good, interesting strategy RPG experience out of this first game, and I really do hope there’s more in store. DioField certainly has the space for it.

Score: 7/10

The DioField Chronicle - Review

by Hiddenx, 19:04

Exputer has reviewed The DioField Chronicle:

This Is eXputer's Review Of The The DioField Chronicle.

This DioField Chronicle Review covers one of the latest additions to the increasingly popular genre of ‘Fictional Countries In A Fantasy World Fighting for Dominance.’ And if that definition brings up a number of franchises to mind, rest assured that you’re not alone.

It is evident from the very first glance that this title is inspired by a number of extremely popular games of the past. And when I say this, I mean this in terms of both the narrative and the gameplay. Think Final Fantasy Tactics, Vlakyria Chronicles, XCOM, and even the record-shattering series that is Fire Emblem.

But while it borrows from a lot of these, the end product is fairly unique, and I’m not sure that it will appeal to everyone. So with this review, we intend to give you a better idea of what this game is and help you decide if you should invest time and money into a full-priced $60 title.

[...]

The DioField Chronicle is going to be a polarising game because while it does make use of a number of really solid ideas, it has little to no unique aspects to speak of. The core combat is really fun, and the slew of abilities, summons, and tactics you can utilize give a much-needed depth to your battles. The maps where encounters take place are also really beautifully created in the style of dioramas, making you feel like a general overlooking a model battlefield.

But if you’re here for the story, then don’t hold your breath. None of the main characters are relatable or unique, and they act like they never really belong in a scene. There’s also a surprising lack of detail in everything from the character models to the interior of your HQ.

All in all, this is a solid RPG that should keep you occupied for a few weeks, after which you’ll probably never think about it again.

The Good

  • Great Core Combat.
  • Selection Of Fun Skills And Summons.
  • Mission Structure.
  • Diorama-Style Arenas.

The Bad

  • Boring Story.
  • Bland Characters.
  • Lack Of Detail Outside Arenas.

The DioField Chronicle Verdict – 3/5

The DioField Chronicle - Preview @ Polygon

by Hiddenx, 06:52

Polygon checked out the upcoming tactical RPG The DioField Chronicle:

The DioField Chronicle is a tactical RPG that goes off the grid

Fresh combat and stale conversations abound in this curio from Square Enix

It used to be that tactical role-playing games were an esoteric and underrepresented genre that existed mainly in the 16-bit past. Not so now, thanks in large part to Square Enix, which these days loves nothing more than to place low- to medium-budget bets on every niche nook and cranny enjoyed by its fandom and represented in its back catalog. Earlier this year, the publisher released Triangle Strategy with Nintendo. In November, it will publish a remaster of the classic Tactics Ogre. Sandwiched between them, on Sept. 22, comes The DioField Chronicle, an unheralded, humble, and curious diversion from the genre orthodoxy.

In contrast to those other two games, and other genre stalwarts like Fire Emblem, The DioField Chronicle dispenses with a movement grid, and with turns. This is a loose, free-flowing, mildly hectic game that plays out in real time. You field a squad of four units and control them rather like the hero units in a real-time strategy game or a MOBA. You point and click to move them around the battlefield and flick restlessly from one unit to the next, commanding to use their abilities, heal, or get out of trouble, always with one wary eye on what’s happening on the rest of the field.

The underlying mechanics and mathematics might be similar to those of a turn-based tactical RPG, but the feel is very different. This is not a game of chess in which you carefully plot and optimize your every move. It is a game of multitasking and quick, on-the-fly prioritization. One thing hasn’t changed, though: Placement is everything. Many of your units’ skills do damage over an area, in a cone, or in a broad swath, so you’ll want to line these up carefully to pick off as many enemy units as possible. Additionally, if one of your warriors attacks an enemy from behind, you get an ambush bonus that doubles your damage, so flanking and manipulating the enemy with MMO-like pulling and tanking tactics are essential.
