Labyrinths

Hello Backers! Today we would like to pull back the curtain a bit to offer our first detailed look at defensive gameplay--starting with the game’s namesake: Labyrinths.

Before I get into down into the weeds of design and mechanics, I’d like to talk a bit about the setting. When you join the game, you take on the role of one of the secret Lords of Starfall--an elite group of shadowy individuals that vie for control of the city. As you may know, Starfall is our central setting, a cosmopolitan but dangerous place steeped in magic.

At the center of the city is a great crater, formed when an otherworldly comet, known by scholars as the Prophet’s Tear, crashed down from the heavens onto Hylea. The impact tore a hole not just in the earth, but in reality itself. Surrounding the crater, scattered across and within the landscape are smaller tears in reality known as Keyrifts. Those who are properly attuned to the magical nature of the Keyrifts can draw on the energies emanating from within, giving them unfettered access to Stardust at its source. Many Keyrifts are also linked, creating a maze that connects distant locations in time and space.

Your labyrinth is a portion of that maze. As you grow in power, you will increase the number of Keyrifts under your control, expanding the size of your labyrinth and your access to Stardust. However, this comes at a cost. Adventurers from rival Lords will attempt to pry their way into your Labyrinth, seeking to carry off a portion of what is yours.

Labyrinths start with a single location. This is the heart of your domain. You defend this location with a single Boss and his deck. When your labyrinth gains a level, you gain your first Keyrift, connecting to a new location on a second ring surrounding your domain. This increases the amount of Stardust gathered from your labyrinth each day, but it also adds to the territory you must defend.

As your labyrinth continues to grow in size, new locations are added to the second ring until it fills, unlocking a third ring. Raiding adventurers must fight their way through one Encounter in each of your rings in order to completely conquer your defense. (If you’ve noticed that this layout looks similar to our Backer Quests, that’s no coincidence. We’ve modeled that part of the campaign after a raid on a rival labyrinth.) The reward for all of your trouble is a bounty of Stardust, gathered each day. Stardust is one of the two key resources of the game, for uses such as buying card packs and crafting cards, to name two.

Of course, there’s a lot more to say about labyrinths than we have space for here, and many details are still in flux as we continue our work on the game. Feel free to share any questions you may have in the comments, and we will do our best to answer them.
