Labyrinth - Shutting Down

by Hiddenx, 09:20

The card game Labyrinth will be shutting down in September 2019:

The Future of Labyrinth

Warriors, Delvers, Plunderers, and Heroes,

We are sad to announce that Labyrinth will be shutting down in September of 2019. We have made the difficult decision to move in a different direction and will no longer be supporting the game in its current form.

We are incredibly grateful to all Labyrinth players that have joined us on this journey over the last five years. It has been an honor and a joy to be able to make the game that we wanted to play, and share it with such a wonderful community. As a way of saying thank you, everything in game is now free so you can build your ultimate decks and show Starfall what you’re made of.

And, as you fight your way through Starfall once last time, keep your eyes peeled. You never know where Korghan and his band will show up again!

Labyrinth - Progress Report

by Hiddenx, 14:14

Here's the progress report #55 for the Early Access Strategy RPG Labyrinth:

Week 55 Progress Report

Steam Winter Sale

Labyrinth is on sale for $4.99 during the Steam Winter Sale, -50% off! The Winter Sale 2016 runs from Dec 22, 2016 @ 9:50am Pacific to Jan 2, 2017 @ 10:10am Pacific. Grab it for a Stocking Stuffer today!

Development

  • The team has been hard at work getting the Defense Tutorial Update ready for release. It is getting closer and we are starting QA today. In addition to finishing integration efforts to get the game running on the authoritative server and fixing related bugs, the team worked on the following this week:
  • The Engineering Team worked on Server/Back End Architecture; Rewards UI; and Boss Tutorial Rewards UI.
  • The Design Team worked on Tutorial clean-up and polish; Quest integration; and whole set card balance and tuning, with an emphasis on Boss cards, minions, and spells.
  • The Art Team worked on new legendary minion models, interface polish, and numerous card visual improvements.
  • The Audio Team worked on Arcane Protector FX; and Hard Light, Lightning Cone, Lockdown FX.

Upcoming Update

We would like to give you advanced warning that we plan to reset accounts on the next update. There will also be a maintenance period when the game will be down while we update. We will announce at a later date exactly when we will start maintenance and releasing the update.

As for the account reset, we will be resetting all Gold, Stardust, Levels, XP, game state, and Card Collection inventory to the "new account starting state" and then refunding Gold and Stardust equivalent to what you earned previously by playing and building your collections. After the update, when you log in, your gold will be equal to:

Gold = (Card packs purchased * 100) + (Gold balance)

For stardust it will be equal to:

Stardust = (Logins since 9/23 * 5) + (Boss wins since 9/23 * 10) + (Stardust balance before 9/23)

Due to inconsistencies with our Stardust data and bugs in the rewards system, we cannot come up with a Stardust formula as accurate as our Gold formula. However, the method shown above overstates the Stardust we are returning to players because we have more accurate Boss wins data than you would expect, since you did not always get notifications of Boss wins due to the bugs.

Happy Holidays!

Happy holidays to all of our backers and fans! Thank you for your support and warm holiday wishes. Most of us at Free Range Games plan to take a little time off next week and come back fresh to bust bugs and get the update out!

Labyrinth - Preview @ God Is A Geek

by Myrthos, 13:20

God is a Geek have checked out the card collectible game Labyrinth.

Labyrinth is still in alpha, and it shows. The frame rate is pretty low at all detail levels, and there are balancing issues with some cards being next to useless, and the bosses being overpowered. The development team are well aware of this, and have already issued a patch that has improved the frame rate at lower settings, and also lowered boss health slightly, giving you more of a chance to put up a fight.

Another curious omission is the lack of a ‘pass’ button. For instance, you might be too far away from an enemy after moving for you to attack, or even for them to attack you, so you’ll want to just skip your turn as to not waste a card. This is odd because a gameplay clip on YouTube shows a pass button in place next to the each hero’s hand, yet in the current build it is absent. Not the end of the world, granted, but with a finite amount of cards to draw from, wasting cards isn’t good strategy, which is a fundamental part of tactical RPGs.

What there is here, though, is a lot of promise. The game looks decent and has a great collect-them-all hook that comes with the CCG style of game. It just needs a little bit more development time to iron out the niggles, and an implementation of a tutorial to help to people grasp the basics. It’s not really fair to compare it to the likes of Hearthstone and Magic: The Gathering because Labyrinth ploughs its own furrow, and Free Range Games has created a neat little game here, and one that I sincerely hope it lives up to its potential.

Thanks Eye.

Labyrinth - Alpha is live!

by Hiddenx, 09:34

The alpha version of Labyrinth has been released - feedback is coming in:

Alpha

The Alpha is live!  And people are documenting bugs already. :)  Alpha Key holders are streaming it this weekend, please check it out.

Development

We were busy trying to get the Alpha build out the door this past week.  It was a little bit rocky to get the streaming event going, but it's well underway.  This is some of what we were working on:

  • The engineering team worked on syncing timeline with display, windup display and sequencing, server to db interface; new db issues, rendering options, sprite replacement on cards, matchmaking server, leaderboard scoring, and bugs including ones affecting mac on Steam, ios autobuild, PlayFab connection issues, prefab batch call options, 3D characters, sounds, collectibles, portraits, HUD, shaders, confirmation dialogs, deck editor.
  • The art team worked on Blademaster trailer, Fireheart trailer storyboards, art for investor presentation; Card Backs 2 & 3; Ninja card; Animations for Giant Queen windup loops and Priestess of the Sun melee; effects for priestess melee and provoke; UI polish for settings screen, deck builder, HUD, Play button, and character gallery.
  • The audio team worked with partners Somatone and the Blademaster trailer.
  • The design team worked on alpha balancing, new cards, test cards, equipment display; and card features like: post action draw, stealth bug, tank AI, removed draw from talents, more summoning space, cantrip cards, don't act flag use, full passes on text, triggers, buff expiration, visual overlap, stance review, discard at start of turn rather than end of tick, structure armor types, multiple summons.

The demo for Labyrinth shows that they know what they’re doing and in just the single match that I played I’ve already found myself addicted to such a strategic depth that I rarely see in games these days. I most certainly look forward to getting the chance to see the full game in action. And if you want to see it in action for yourself, check out the video above below.

Labyrinth - Kickstarter Updates

by Myrthos, 22:37

Eye noticed that there are two new Kickstarter updates fo Labyrinth. The Kingdoms of Karakuul update talks about the setting of the game and the other update is about defense and bosses in the game.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned by playing games, it’s that every dungeon has a boss. Labyrinth is no different. What heroes are to offense, bosses are to defense. You can collect cool bosses, and customize your deck and dungeon in pretty much the same way you do your offensive party. The difference is that your dungeon is always active and earning you rewards even when you’re not playing the game!

The fact that you aren’t actively controlling your dungeon doesn’t mean you don’t have control over your dungeon, though. You are able to set up the most difficult dungeon you can imagine by choosing rooms, setting up traps, choosing different structures and, of course, selecting your own special combination of imposing minions and bosses.

That’s right… bosses. Plural. Your dungeon can have more than one boss!

Dungeons with multiple bosses provide a lot of strategic depth for players.. If you choose wisely, they complement each other similar to the way heroes do. While any boss might have weaknesses to some teams of heroes, other bosses might be particularly good against that same team. When you build your dungeon, you can shore up some of the weaknesses and set up a defense that has a whole greater than the sum of its parts by creating an interesting and challenging experience for your fellow Labyrinth-dwellers.

Also, thanks Oracle.

Labyrinth - Preview @ TCG

by Hiddenx, 20:37

Trading Card Games has previewed Labyrinth - a collectible card RPG currently on Kickstarter.

Labyrinth – Early Preview

It appears that mixing other genres into CCGs is all the rage with developers at the moment! Free Range Games, a game design studio with a successful history, are the latest developers to have a go at this. Their latest project Labyrinth is a game that combines the strategic depth seen in Collectible Card Games (CCGs) with the turn-based, tactical combat seen in Role Playing Games (RPGs). All of this is delivered in an immersive 3D world that brings the tactical battles to life.

Free Range Games has taken this project to Kickstarter, the crowd-funding website, in order to finalize the project. It is storming ahead with backers so far and looks set to be a huge success, which comes as no surprise. There are many people out there, including myself, who love turn-based RPGs and to mix this in with a CCG is just icing on the cake. I was able to get some early information about the game and I am eager to share this with you.

Will Labyrinth live up to the hype, or has it got lost in a labyrinthine mess of influences? Read on to find out…

[...]

First Impressions

Labyrinth is a bit like a classic Dungeons & Dragons PC game mixed with the strategic depth seen in CCGs to bring a completely unique gaming experience. There is plenty of support out there from your casual gamer right through to professional Magic: The Gathering players. Their endorsement of this project should be enough to encourage you to back it.

To have the expertise of Justin Gary and Stoneblade Entertainment who are responsible for Ascension, one of the most praised deckbuilder games available today, means you are assured a quality title. The attention to detail and graphics are impressive so far.

I cannot wait to take on Knights, Dragons, and god-like monsters once the game is launched. Of course I’ll be backing to make sure I get it as soon as possible – will you?

Labyrinth - Kickstarter Update #6

by Hiddenx, 21:39

In Labyrinth Kickstarter update #6 the labyrinths are explained:

Day 6 Results

Thank you all very much for your support, yet another day of solid growth! A few more of you clicked through the links below and assisted getting the word out. Keep it up and we’ll unlock those extra rewards in no time! Please click the links below:

Labyrinths

Hello Backers! Today we would like to pull back the curtain a bit to offer our first detailed look at defensive gameplay--starting with the game’s namesake: Labyrinths.

Before I get into down into the weeds of design and mechanics, I’d like to talk a bit about the setting. When you join the game, you take on the role of one of the secret Lords of Starfall--an elite group of shadowy individuals that vie for control of the city. As you may know, Starfall is our central setting, a cosmopolitan but dangerous place steeped in magic.

At the center of the city is a great crater, formed when an otherworldly comet, known by scholars as the Prophet’s Tear, crashed down from the heavens onto Hylea. The impact tore a hole not just in the earth, but in reality itself. Surrounding the crater, scattered across and within the landscape are smaller tears in reality known as Keyrifts. Those who are properly attuned to the magical nature of the Keyrifts can draw on the energies emanating from within, giving them unfettered access to Stardust at its source. Many Keyrifts are also linked, creating a maze that connects distant locations in time and space.

Your labyrinth is a portion of that maze. As you grow in power, you will increase the number of Keyrifts under your control, expanding the size of your labyrinth and your access to Stardust. However, this comes at a cost. Adventurers from rival Lords will attempt to pry their way into your Labyrinth, seeking to carry off a portion of what is yours.

Labyrinths start with a single location. This is the heart of your domain. You defend this location with a single Boss and his deck. When your labyrinth gains a level, you gain your first Keyrift, connecting to a new location on a second ring surrounding your domain. This increases the amount of Stardust gathered from your labyrinth each day, but it also adds to the territory you must defend.

As your labyrinth continues to grow in size, new locations are added to the second ring until it fills, unlocking a third ring. Raiding adventurers must fight their way through one Encounter in each of your rings in order to completely conquer your defense. (If you’ve noticed that this layout looks similar to our Backer Quests, that’s no coincidence. We’ve modeled that part of the campaign after a raid on a rival labyrinth.) The reward for all of your trouble is a bounty of Stardust, gathered each day. Stardust is one of the two key resources of the game, for uses such as buying card packs and crafting cards, to name two.

Of course, there’s a lot more to say about labyrinths than we have space for here, and many details are still in flux as we continue our work on the game. Feel free to share any questions you may have in the comments, and we will do our best to answer them.

Labyrinth - Kickstarter Update #4

by Hiddenx, 14:05

The Labyrinth Kickstarter had a good start, but some help is welcome:

Day 4 Results

We had another spectacular day for Labyrinth! Thank you all very much for your generosity. The number of backers is growing, but we still need your help in spreading the word and helping everyone get more rewards by completing the Backer Quests.

Pledges jumped up to over $64,000 on Day 4, taking us to 43% funded. The number of backers grew by 10% again over the last day. Please consider increasing your pledge and reaching out to friends and asking them to back for even $1, so that we might possibly reach 50% funded in the first week.

Highlights of Day 4

Please keep sharing and this Kickstarter will be a huge success!

The Spirit Plane

Hello Backers! It’s time for the first of our updates that look into the world building that we have done to make the setting for Labyrinth an interesting and cool place to spend your time. In the spirit of today’s spooky holiday, what better time to talk about the Spirit Plane?

As you may know, Labyrinth’s setting is a world called Hylea, which sits fixed in the center of its own universe. In the heavens above Hylea are three more planes of existence which surround the world like layers of an onion. The nearest to Hylea is the Spirit Plane: home of Hylea’s two moons Vylar and Inos, the lands of the eternal souls of the dead. [...]

Labyrinth - Kickstarter Update #2

by Hiddenx, 23:06

Labyrinth started very well on Kickstarter - here's an update:

Day 2 Results & A Look at Gameplay

Day 2 Results

We had a second great day for Labyrinth! Thank you all very much for your generosity and spreading the word! We sincerely appreciate your support in bringing this game to life.

Easy things to do to spread the word:

As I mentioned in yesterday’s update, this is the first ever Kickstarter campaign for Free Range Games, so we are incredibly pleased that we have reached nearly $52,000 on Day 2. We have an impressive number of the highly committed backers. The number of backers also jumped up 35%. We’re now over ⅓ of the way to our goal in just 2 days! Thank you for helping us reach another milestone!

Highlights of Day 2

Support from fans, friends and family continued to be very strong yesterday. We are humbled by the enthusiasm and appreciate everyone’s assistance getting the word out about the Labyrinth Kickstarter campaign. More solid articles were written about our game and TCG royalty also tweeted about Labyrinth!

Activity of note:

We talked to hundreds of more people yesterday and many are helping in a multitude of ways. Many of your questions will be answered in the FAQ that we will update today. It’s impossible to list all of that support here and we cannot possibly express enough sincere thanks. Please keep doing what you are doing and this Kickstarter will be a huge success and we will have created something very unique!

Gameplay

On the game design side of things, we have an update for you today from John Fiorillo, our Lead Mechanics and Card Designer. John will go into greater detail on the inner workings of combat, and give you a taste of Warfare, one of our four disciplines of magic. I’ll let John take over from here:

Hi everyone!

To give you a little background, I’ve been designing games for quite a while now. I started my career in game design after a few years on the Magic Pro Tour when I met Justin Gary, my esteemed colleague and best friend. I expressed interest in working on games with him at Upper Deck Entertainment and the rest is history. I worked on VS System, the World of Warcraft Miniatures game, and a few other projects before founding StoneBlade Entertainment with Justin over five years ago.

Whew, okay… now that that’s out of the way. I’m excited to finally get to talk about Labyrinth! It’s a very exciting project made by a talented bunch of people and I’m thankful to be a part of it.

As you know, Labyrinth is a tactical dungeon crawl where players can collect cards to bolster the power of their raiding parties and dungeon defense. I’m here to tell you about the game play and how you actually go about doing battle…and maybe show you a card or two along the way. Just keep in mind that we’re still in development, so anything I tell you right now is still subject to change. [...]

Labyrinth - New Kickstarter

by Hiddenx, 20:14

Free Range Games has started a Kickstarter campaign for Labyrinth:

CCG meets tactical RPG

With Labyrinth, embark on a new Collectible Card Game (CCG) adventure: Assemble powerful decks of Heroes to invade rival dungeons and engage in epic player vs. player 3D battles--then, use the loot from your conquests to customize your own dungeon and put together a powerful deck of bosses, minions, and traps to defend your riches at all costs.

  • PvP game which marries CCG & RPG
  • Your Offense deck forms a party of Heroes to raid a dungeon
  • Your Defense deck forms a dungeon with Bosses to defend your loot when you are not online
  • Tactical turn-based action fused with CCG strategy
  • Boss cards define their own uniquely themed dungeon rooms
  • Free to Play with hundreds of cards to win, craft, and purchase
  • Releasing on PC and Mac; iOS and Android to follow

What we strive to build:

Bring 'action' to collectible card cames: With the inclusion of a turn-based 3D combat system, we are excited to bring more action and tactical thinking to the battlefield, upending many conventions of traditional card games. Every card is more than a means for achieving victory: it's also part of a living, breathing world. This also plays to our studio’s experience in making AAA action games.

Design for deep CCG strategy: The combination of tactical action with familiar CCG strategy opens the door to a new kind of adventure game. We are happy that the creator of Ascension and Solforge, Justin Gary and his team at Stone Blade have joined us to add their decades of experience playing and designing CCGs to our own. Together we are exploring this new frontier and discovering new possibilities for rich gameplay.

Create an expansive world rich in culture--both magical and familiar: We are passionate game developers.  We want that to shine through in Labyrinth. In crafting the diverse world of Hylea, whether we are describing the Cosmos and creation story of Starfall or the jewelry of a Giant from the Northern Clans, we strive to have our passion and attention to detail reflect in every facet of story and art.

Build a game that will last for decades: First and foremost, Labyrinth is a collectible card game. With their hallmarks of creative play, endless combinations, meta-game thinking and the potential for vast expansion, CCGs offer the best and longest-lasting experiences in gaming. We've captured these proven qualities and folded them into an exciting new game. [...]

Labyrinth - Greenlit by the Community

by Hiddenx, 20:53

Labyrinth succeeded on Steam Greenlight. The release is planned for early 2016.

loading...

What is Labyrinth?

Labyrinth is a love letter written to the classic fantasy role-playing adventures that we all enjoyed when we were growing up.  It’s a new kind of collectible card game that looks and plays like an RPG, where you play the roles of both adventurer and dungeon master.

How do the cards work?

Every card in Labyrinth has two sides.  When raiding other players, you play with the front side of your deck, which represents your Hero and his abilities.  When opponents attack you, they play against the back side of your deck, which represents your dungeon with is bosses, monsters, and traps.

What is the story?

The opening events of Labyrinth are set in the city of Starfall, on a world called Hylea.  At the center of city is a hole in reality– a gateway to other planes, which has made Starfall a hub of magical trade.  You play an adventurer, one of many that come from the farthest reaches of Hylea to seek their fortunes in Starfall.  But it’s a dangerous place.  Rival gangs prowl in the streets.  As you settle in and   gather your riches, you’ll need to build ever-better defenses to protect them.

Your journey starts with a single Hero deck and a one-room dungeon.  As you collect additional cards, you may add more Heroes to your party, and more rooms to your dungeon.

In creating the setting for Labyrinth, we’ve put a lot of effort into making something much larger than the core game.  Hylea is a vast world with its own rich history.  As we add to the game, you’ll be introduced to different cultures and factions, each with its own Heroes and powers.

What is innovation does Labyrinth bring to collectible card games?

Labyrinth brings a huge amount of innovation to the genre of collectible card games.  Each card is much more than just an image and rules text– it’s an animated creature, or an effect, or a heroic character within a 3D world.  From the start, we wanted to capture the feel of tabletop adventures, and this led us to a different kind of game that is driven by collectible cards, but with the animated characters and 3-dimensional combat that you would expect in an RPG.

How does Labyrinth play differently from other collectible card games?

Labyrinth also brings a completely new style of play to the CCG genre.  Player vs. player raids are asynchronous.  This means that only you need to be online when you are delving into another player’s dungeon.  Our intent is to capture the feel of a PvE adventure within a PvP game.  Just like traditional CCGs, you are matched with other players, giving you infinite dungeons to explore.  Because the world is persistent, even when you are not online, your defenses continue to work for you, using your deck.
