I wasn't quite sure what to expect, going into Asterigos: Curse of the Stars. It is, after all, the debut title from Taiwanese developer Acme Gamestudio, so there's practically no pedigree to speak of.

However, even with all the other big RPGs from big brands releasing around the clock, sometimes it's nice to experience something new & unknown, something a bit more focused and smaller-scope, and something not tied to any existing brand or property.

And honestly, I enjoyed Asterigos much more than I expected to.

The playable character of Asterigos (that's pronounced AST-terr-reh-gohs) is a young woman named Hilda, a warrior of the Northwind Legion who travels to the cursed city of Aphes to find her missing father & tribemates. Aphes has been stuck in time for centuries, due to the titular Curse of the Stars. As Hilda seeks out her brethren, the history of Aphes & its curse slowly comes to the forefront, and Hilda's actions will unavoidably shape its fate.

Asterigos: Curse of the Stars is a better experience than I expected it to be. Despite its shortcomings, such as excessive dialogue, translation oddities, quest issues, and some awkward area design, for those looking for a comfortable action RPG with a satisfying story & competent combat, Asterigos deserves a chance.

Asterigos is a 3D action RPG set in a high fantasy world, featuring exhilarating battle encounters, interconnected maps full of adventure for you to explore and an immersive story.

Acme Gamestudio, developers of Asterigos, have been interviewed about the setting, storytelling, combat, and more by Gamingbolt.

"It takes up to 15 hours to beat the game if you run straight for the main quests. If you consider all collectables and all explorations, it might take up to 35 to 40 hours."

How much of an emphasis does the game place on storytelling? Hilda clearly seems to be quite an important pillar of the story, but what should players’ general expectations be from the overarching narrative?

Asterigos has very heavy storytelling, if you compare it to the general action games. We try to design our unique way of narrative. And so we make our protagonist, Hilda, a girl with a love to draw graphic diaries. So as you play through the game, she would write down and draw the pictures of what she experienced, making every player’s diary unique to read. Other than this, there are also historical documents, letters, or other written diaries to let you explore the lore of Aphes. And whenever a conversation starts, we also grant Hilda options to ask more questions should you be interested in knowing more of the story. There are also flashback echoes where when you triggered, an event of the past would replay again right before your eyes to let you re-experience what had happened.

And there’s motion graphic cinematics, told from another important characters’ perspective, to conclude a story when Hilda finished a stage’s main objective.

We hope with these components piecing together, we can bring an immersive and enjoyable storytelling experience to the players.

RPGSite reports the announcement of Asterigos, an action-RPG by ACME Gamestudios. The game is planned for release in late Spring 2022, on PC and PS4.

Taiwan-based independent developer Acme Gamestudios has announced Asterigos, an upcoming action RPG drawing thematic and stylistic roots from the real-world Greco-Roman historical periods. The game is slated for a simultaneous PS4 and PC release in late spring 2022, followed by a PS5 version toward the tail end of autumn.

Story

Hilda, a brave North_wind Legion warrior, seeks to find her lost father and enters the mythical cursed city. She will come to realize the rise—and fall—of a great city, witness history in the making, and face difficult choices which will shape the entire kingdom’s fate.
