RPGWatch Feature - ICY Review

by Myrthos, 23:01

For his next review, forgottenlor decided for something colder and checked out the Frostbite edition of ICY.

I'm nearly out of medicine and that's not good. In the post-nuclear winter world of ICY, medicine is the only way to heal your wounded party members, and it's pretty difficult to find throughout most of the game. So I set about trying to scavenge ruins that don't seem too dangerous, because the last thing I need is to get into another fight with no way to heal up. I really hope that I find some disinfectant or bandages, as those raise up my medical supply. No such luck. I move to the next point on the map and hope I don't trigger another event, since Carlos and Mobolaji seem to be at each other's throats, and while I'd be willing to banish Carlos from the group, I'd rather not lose his wife April. Luckily, no event is triggered, but I do find a house. There is a hole in the floor, but luckily, I have a rope, which I can sacrifice to explore the hole. Inside I at least find some chemicals. With those and some cloth, I can be craft bandages. My medicine supply goes up from 8 to 9. A small victory, but a victory nonetheless. ICY is a survival-RPG, which despite its low budget manages to pull off what few other low budget RPGs do, namely being a full blown RPG, with the all the RPG elements you could wish for, but within a fairly limited scope.

A COMPLETELY REMASTERED EXPERIENCE

We worked to improve every lacking feature of the original ICY, recreating the game from scratch in Unity 5.Thanks to the exhaustive feedback received from our community and the experience we gained from the original game, we have improved ICY’s formula in many different ways to let it offer a real survival RPG experience in a cold post-apocalyptic world.

  • The survival experience was overhauled in order to offer more variety.
  • A crafting system was introduced, allowing the player to create new items.
  • The original plot was improved and new quests and characters have been added to create a longer and more satisfying experience.

ICY - Remastered Edition Update

by Hiddenx, 20:37

The Remastered Edition of ICY will be released soon:

NEWS: The Remastered Edition is close to its release!

Many of you may be wondering what happened to the Remastered Edition we promised and the answer is pretty simple: we had some issues. It wouldn’t be neither fair nor professional to go into detail, so let’s just say that the results were underwhelming and we had to do something to keep our promise: release a completely improved version of ICY.

That’s why a new programmer with 20 years of experience is working with us to deliver what we promised. We had to start from scratch and completely rewrite all the code needed, but we had all the assets we needed to build the game and in a small time frame we already managed to rebuild most of it.

We have no excuses, that’s why we can’t do anything but apologize to all the people waiting for the Remastered Edition and work to give our best. We are working to release a solid and compelling game, improving as much as possible everything that was lacking in the old ICY. If we decided to completely trash the previous work on the Remastered Edition it is because it was completely disappointing. We promised you a real improvement and that’s what we will give you.

Here is a short video showing some of the new features and improvements.

ICY - Remastered Edition announced

by Hiddenx, 20:49

A Remastered Edition for Icy has been announced - from the website:

ICY: Remastered Edition

Hi everyone!

It’s been some time since ICY was released, and we’ve kept supporting it as much as we could, but now we’re announcing our plans to do something more than just a couple of updates: we will create a Remastered Edition of ICY. Not a simple update, not a couple more quests, but a fully reworked edition that will allow ICY to shine at it was meant to.

Why? Because we had to cut out a lot of good ideas due to the lack of funds during development. We also paid for our lack of experience. ICY is not a bad game, but there’s a lot of room for all kinds of improvements, and we want our first game to be as special as when we first imagined it.

Why now? Because we’ve had the luck to meet investors who believe in us and our projects. Remastering ICY is nothing but one of the many things we will do in the future, since we are finally in a better financial situation.

When? Before the end of the year, that’s for sure, but we don’t want to rush anything, and the remastered edition will come out only when it’s ready.

How? We’ll completely rework ICY’s gameplay to offer a better and deeper survival challenge. We will also improve the game’s narrative, following the feedbacks we got over the last months. It won’t be just a slightly improved game – it will be like playing a brand new one that happens to use ICY’s plot (which will be also improved and expanded!)

What about the old ICY? Anyone already in possession of ICY on Steam will receive the Remastered Edition for free, because you people are the ones we have to thank for the fact that Inner Void is still a reality. We owe it to you!

Anyone interested in playing the old ICY will still be able to access it, but we will not support it after the release of the Remastered Edition.

Here’s a detailed list of things we’ll do:

  • We will change the travel system: the player will move between different nodes with his/her party, and each node will hide different locations to explore.
  • We will rework the Hunting and Scavenging systems to be more varied and offer a more interesting challenge.
  • We will completely overhaul the combat, creating a new turn-based system in which the player will be able to choose the overall setup of his/her party and use items and special abilities to overcome the enemy. This will offer a combat system that is truly strategic and challenging, greatly improving what was lacking in ICY.
  • We will rework the inventory, allowing the player not only to craft items but also to manage the equipment of the whole party. This will make scavenging much more interesting, and the loot gained will finally be shared among companions.
  • We will add more quests and improve the main storyline, especially the final part, which was a little too rushed. The player will have more time to know Tanya, TJ and Janeve, and will have to face more challenges before reaching the game’s ending.
  • We will add more content related to the party, fleshing out the characters that travel with the player.

And this list is only about the major changes and additions. We are already working on the game from the ground up to give you a 360 degrees improved experience, turning a Visual Novel with some RPG elements into a true Survival RPG, with all the features you would expect from it!

We are also open to suggestions! Is there something you’d want to see in this new ICY? Tell us, we may be able to fulfill your desires!
Thanks for your attention, fellow travelers. We hope to give you a brand new ICY to enjoy soon!

ICY - Released

by Myrthos, 17:19

Here is the official press blurb for the releases of ICY today on Steam now with a 25% discount and later also on Humble Store and others (but can't find it there now).

ICY, THE NARRATIVE-DRIVEN POST-APOCALYPTIC RPG LAUNCHES TODAY!
CAN YOU SURVIVE THE WHITE WASTELAND?

STAMFORD, CT, July 27, 2015 – Digital Tribe Games is excited to announce the launch of Inner Void Entertainment’s narrative-driven, survival RPG, ICY, on Steam, Humble Store and other major digital distribution channels. ICY releases today at the suggested retail price of $12.99. An additional 25% discount will be available for a week in celebration of the title’s release.

ICY presents a full cast of complex characters with diverse personalities and dramatic backstories – each willing to tell you all if players decide to ask. Some characters encountered will even be willing to abandon their chosen path and join the player’s ever-growing nomad family as they make their way across the Frozen World in search of lost friends and a better life. Prepare to hunt, scavenge, trade and sometimes kill in order to obtain what is needed to survive.

In the world of the new Ice Age, players are immersed in the dire struggle to stay alive. The words you say and actions you make send you down branching paths where characters can become new friends, or bitter enemies, based on the tone of conversation you choose. The EXP players invested in Skills, and Items discovered when scavenging, dictate which options are available as they continually face new situations in this post-apocalyptic environment.

ICY began as a little experiment inspired by NEO: Scavenger, which really managed to simulate the harshness of surviving in a hostile environment, as well as various RPGs in which player's choices really matter - Games where dialogue isn’t just something to skip to get back to shooting people.

Survival games are quite popular, but most of them are procedural games in which the player has to survive as long as he/she can. With ICY, we wanted to put a long and complex plot alongside some more standard mechanics of the survival genre, but without using a central hub in which the player had to constantly return to as they slowly gather and build resources to improve their chances of survival.

In ICY, the player is the leader of a nomad family where survival is based on more than just collecting resources. That is just part of the nomad’s daily routine where survival not only consists of hunting and scavenging, but also how they choose to interact with other characters and tackle the situations they face as the narrative of the game plays out.

We worked hard to give it a unique flavor, to create a unique experience. ICY is not a clone of another game, but something with its own identity and we are very proud we have been able to achieve that.
- Nathan Piperno, Inner Void

Key features:
  • Experience an intense and mature story of survival in a unique post-apocalyptic new Ice Age setting.

  • Over 400 pieces of detailed hand-drawn artwork illustrate the backdrop for the story.
  • Customize your character by choosing how to distribute attribute points among 3 main character traits and 10 different skills that effects your abilities and experience through the entire game.

Here we are again! We managed to reach the 7500 dollars stretch goal and that’s a good thing, since the more money we’ll have, the better Icy will be.

In the meantime we received a lot of feedbacks and we’ve been able to fix some bugs. We uploaded a new alpha version and, this time, a Mac build is available.

ICY - Alpha Build Available for Download

by Couchpotato, 04:51

Inner Void Interactive posted a new Indiegogo Update for ICY with news everyone can try a new Alpha build. Here the links, and details for anyone interested.

Instead of annoying all you lovely backers with a hundred updates that no one would have read, we decided to prepare a little surprise: an alpha demo featuring 30-60 minutes of gameplay.

But beware, we talking about an alpha version and your journey may lead you to discover unknown bugs. And, right now, the game UI works properly only with 16:9 and 16:10 resolutions, so you may want to run it windowed if you don't have a screen with such ratios.

You can download this demo from the following mirrors. Right now, only PC version is available.

by Couchpotato, 04:54

Inner Void Interactive posted few more Indiegogo Updates for ICY this month, and the game has managed to earn $6,738 of the $2,500 goal with six days left.

Let's take a moment to discuss about the strange or peculiar things that you may face while playing at Icy. The game will have a strong plot that will lead you across the world, but there will also be room for exploration and there will be plenty of secondary contents that will enrich the overall experience.

ICY -New Indiegogo NPC Update

by Couchpotato, 04:12

Inner Void Interactive posted a new Indiegogo Update for ICY this week about the games NPC's. The game has maganged to earn $5,992 of the $2,500 goal in 12 days.

Today’s update will explain more about NPCs in Icy, especially about the companions that will follow the player all around the world.

Being an RPG, Icy is mostly about roleplaying a character in a world that coherently reacts to what the player does or says, creating a dynamic context that will offer consequences on many levels. Most of those choices are made inside dialogues and that’s why we need characterized NPCs to properly create a reactive world in which the player can really feel to be an actor and not just a spectator. This is even more important when we’re talking about major NPCs, like the player’s companions. There will be a hidden relationship value that the player will be able to affect during the game, improving or damaging the relationships with his/her followers.

ICY - Indiegogo Campaign Updates

by Couchpotato, 04:21

Inner Void Interactive posted a few more Indiegogo Updates for ICY this week. The first update has information the game has reached its $5,000 Stretch goal.

Today we reached the $5000 stretch goal, meaning that the final game will feature more dynamic events, capable of delivering a deeper survival feelings. Right now scavenging and hunting are quite simple, but after reaching the 5'000 goal we'll be able to partially rework them, adding more events and making them more compelling.

The latest update mentions the game is Greenlit, and shares a new video.

The campaign is not over yet and for every penny we get, the better Icy will be on its release date. This gameplay enhancement is only one of the many things we could do to deliver a better game to all of you!

ICY - Indiegogo Update

by Couchpotato, 04:50

Inner Void Interactive posted the first Indiegogo Update for ICY, and answers a few questions from backers. The game is also more than half funded as of right now.

Warning: The link has NSFW content so you have been warned.

First of all, when this update is getting posted the game is already 44% funded, and we have to thank the 97 backers that helped us getting so far in less than 2 days. Yeah, we love you all (in a platonic way)! It's now FAQ time, because we're getting bored of repeating the same things all over the internet, that's why we need to place them on the main page. And in this update, just to fill all this empty, white space.

Will Icy be DRM-free?

Yes, there will be DRM-free version of the game, at the same price.

Onwhich platform will Icy be released?

On PC (Windows, Mac and Linux).

Why are you asking only for 2500$?

The game is in an advanced phase of the development, we just need some more money to be able to fully polish it. Being gamers we know how annoying could be to buy an incomplete or bugged game, that’s why we want Icy to be fully enjoyable since day one.

by Couchpotato, 05:11

Nathan Piperno the Writer and game designer of Inner Void Interactive notified me he has  launched a new Indiegogo Campaign for his new RPG game ICY asking for $2,500.

Icy is an RPG set in a post-apocalyptic world witnessing a new Ice Age. The player will create his/her own character and live an adventure across the White Wasteland, struggling each day to survive, without losing hope to find a better place where to thrive. Icy mixes role-play and survival dynamics, allowing the player to lead a nomad family in their fight for survival, and to take care of all the responsibilities a leader has, such as keeping the group together and planning how to face a hostile world.

Don't forget he was the man behind the RPG game from last year called Zaharia.

ICY - Development Diarys #4 & #5

by Couchpotato, 04:50

Developer Inner Void released two more updates this month for ICY. The first update is from February 7th, and talks about how you will have to survive in the game.

Today’s post will cover the basics of survival in Icy. The player will be the leader of one of the many small groups of nomads that live wandering around the Frozen World. The daily routine of a nomad consist mostly in hunting for food, scavenging hoping to find something useful and walking, walking and even more walking.

Tne next update was posted today, and talks about hunting.

Today we’ll speak about a core feature of Icy: the hunting. Hunting is of the utmost importance to all the people living in the Frozen World, for the simple reason that the cold climate prevents to grow any kind of food, since even during summer’s nights is not rare to have temperatures below 0 degrees.

ICY - Development Diary #3

by Couchpotato, 06:21

It has been a while since the last Development Diary was posted for Frozen World, and thanks to daveyd I have the next update from the developer Inner Void.

After a couple of months of silence, here we are again with some updates on the development of Icy, the post-apocalyptic RPG that was previously named Frozen World. We didn’t spend the last months “building snowmen”, we worked on our game and we can finally start to show it to the world. And we will start with the dialogue system.

Frozen World - Development Diary #2

by Couchpotato, 05:25

Innervoid posted the second development diary update for Frozen World.

In Frozen World the player will be a nomad and we aim to create a satisfying experience to fully express the cruelty of this world. The player will face unexpected dangers, ruthless people and mysterious legacies from a distant past. He will need to lead his companions in a struggle for survival, fearing both the external world and the internal issues, because the group needs to stay close and everyday problems will regularly threat its harmony.

Frozen World - Development Diary #1

by Couchpotato, 02:59

Innervoid posted a new development diary update for their next RPG Frozen World.

In this first dev. diary we’ll talk about Frozen World main features.

In general, Frozen World will be a narrative and interpretative experience: the player will create his/her character and play through a branching story with a free gameplay, allowing for a deep and satisfying roleplaying experience. This is easy to say, but usually hard to create, so let us give you some more detail about the gameplay structure.

Frozen World won’t appear so different compared to a visual novel and there will be a lot of common features, since the game will feature a narrative built with lots of texts and 2D images. But dialogues won’t be the only gameplay mechanic, because Frozen World is a game about survival in a dangerous world, where humanity is scattered and few in numbers. The player will be able to freely travel around the frozen waste moving his party on a map, which will also allow the player to hunt for food and scavenge in search for ancient treasures. Travelling is part of a nomad daily routine, but that doesn’t make it less risky since the world is full of dangers of any sort and quite often those dangers are born from other humans actions and needs.

Frozen World - Innervoid's New RPG Project

by Couchpotato, 01:23

The last update from Inner Void on Zaharia mentioned a new game called Project Frozen World. They have more information on their new website for the game.

Project Frozen World, our New Project

We are glad to announce that we are currently working on a new project!

Sadly we didn’t manage to find any investor interested in developing Zaharia with no multiplayer or free-to play features and we didn’t have enough funds to develop it on our own, so we decided to work on a lower budget  project.

The new project, temporary called Project Frozen World, will be settled in a post-apocalyptic world where the remains of humanity are facing a new Ice Age. Project Frozen World will be a roleplaying experience in which the player will constantly struggle to survive, leading his/her  party across a white wasteland.

We won’t throw away all the work we did on Zaharia and working on Project Frozen World will allow us to develop various gameplay mechanics that we’ll be able to use in future games, we will also be able to use some of our time to further improve the setting of Zaharia, in order to create a better game in the future. We still hope to develop Zaharia and maybe Project Frozen World will be profitable enough to let us start again working on Zaharia.

What about Zaharia? Will we see it in the future?

We hope so, we worked a lot of time on Zaharia’s setting and we don’t want to trash everything. As soon as we will have enough funds to fully develop it, not an anonymous game, we will resume its development.

Why are you developing another game if you don’t have the funds to develop Zaharia?

Because it will cost us a tenth of Zaharia. That doesn’t mean that it will be a bad game or a extremely simple game, simply Project Frozen World has a completely different design and it will need fewer resources to get completed.

Will Project Frozen World be a RPG?

Yes. We love RPGs and we love how they let the player live a personal adventure, shaped by choices of any kind.

Will Project Frozen World be a survival sandbox game with just a couple of branching dialogues?

No. We are not working on a sandbox experience, we think that there are enough sandbox survival games on the market, we will explore the narrative dimension of survival in a post-apocalyptic world. This means that we will create a complex and satisfying survival gameplay, but our main focus will be the roleplaying and narrative experience. Project Frozen World will feature a lot of dialogues, it will let the player explore the world from a different perspective compared to a sandbox game, going beyond the mere gathering of food and resources.

Will you start a crowdfunding campaign for Project Frozen World?

We are not sure about that, we hope to fully develop the game with our  own funds, but starting a Kickstarter campaign with a really low goal could help us expand the game, providing a better gameplay to the players.

How long will the development of Project Frozen World last?

It’s hard to precisely define the release date, now we only have a little prototype, but we won’t need more than a year to fully develop it.
