Dark Envoy - Patch 1.4

by Hiddenx, 18:21

Couchpotato spotted patch 1.4 preview for Dark Envoy:

Patch 1.4 Preview

Get ready for an exclusive sneak peek at what's coming in the upcoming Patch 1.4!

Get ready for an exclusive sneak peek at what's coming in the upcoming Patch 1.4! In addition to addressing reported issues and refining game balance, Patch 1.4 will introduce exciting new features detailed below.

Narrative changes
One of the main features introduced in Patch 1.4 includes narrative changes. We have listened to your feedback, which is why we made cutscenes more dynamic and less janky. These changes are particularly significant in the first act of the game. For example, now you start the game by controlling two characters instead of just Malakai, as it was before. This adjustment allows for seamless co-op play right from the beginning. Additionally, we've added a scene where Vasso, one of the characters who will join us later, helps us deal with enemies.

New Unique items
We have prepared new unique items, including unique items for each of the available bosses, as well as those that can drop randomly from chests or enemies. We expanding on the feature from the last patch, introducing even more weapons that will have their unique abilities.

When creating new items, we aimed to ensure that these new abilities are directly associated with bosses. For example, defeating the Bob, who is one of the first bosses, will reward you with the one-handed hammer "Fallen Rat King's Scepter" along with a new weapon skill "Rat Toss" allowing you to throw it at enemies dealing 200% weapon damage and poisoning them additionally it will also provide us with an passive skill that will add immortal rat companion that will assist the wearer in fights.

Weapon Rebalance
We've received a lot of feedback indicating that ranged attack-focused builds are much stronger than melee variations. Therefore, in Patch 1.4, we have made significant changes to melee weapons. To rebalance them properly, in the newest update, they will now deal approximately 60% more damage than ranged weapons. Additionally, we've buffed 2-handed ranged weapons, especially the two-handed crossbows, which were underutilized despite their explosive effect.

Additionally, with the 1.4 update, we make graphical improvements such as an enhanced map and a new look for mining deposits, which will now vary in appearance depending on the resource obtained.

Thank you to all who provide feedback on Discord and Steam. Remember, you can directly share your ideas using the in-game "report issue" tool, ensuring they reach our team for consideration.

Dark Envoy - Adept Class

by Hiddenx, 22:25

Learn more about the Adept class in Dark Envoy:

Adept Specializations Highlights

Unleash the power of the Adept Class

Unleash the power of the elements, control your enemies, or summon ancient spirits to fight alongside you. Dive into the diverse world of magic in Dark Envoy with these three distinct Adept specializations!

Elementalist
The Elementalist in Dark Envoy is a traditional mage harnessing the combined power of the elements, to decimate enemy formations. With abilities like Meteor, allowing for massive AoE damage, the Elementalist is a force to be reckoned with. The Immolate skill, on the other hand, scales with the enemy's total HP, making it a perfect tool for dealing with bulky high-priority enemies and bosses.

Combat Medic
The Combat Medic is a sorcerer who wields the powers of both life and death. Their very presence serves as an inspiration, granting vitality to allies and enabling them to surpass their own limitations. Not only does this specialization possess abilities capable of dealing Chaos damage, making it unique among adept specializations, but it's also one of few classes capable of seizing control of an enemy's mind, turning them into an ally thanks to the skill "Mind Virus" .

Summoner
The Summoner is a druidic adept who utilizes their bond with spirits to summon them onto the battlefield. Beyond their summoning abilities, they possess the unique capability of transforming themselves into a powerful entity called the Colossus, serving as the last line of defense. Depending on your choice, your transformation can be more defensive, buffing allies around you, or offensive, with skills that allow you to pull enemies towards you.

The Elementalist, Combat Medic, and Summoner are just three of 12 specializations available in Dark Envoy. Each offers a unique playstyle and range of abilities for you to master.

What specialization do you think is the best? Is there any particular combo you use during the game? Let us know in the comments!

Dark Envoy - Patch 1.3

by Hiddenx, 22:05

Henriquejr spotted a new major update for Dark Envoy:

Patch 1.3 is Live!

New challenges, rewards, revamped random dungeons, and much more!

Get ready for an epic update packed with thrilling content! Prepare to tackle new challenges in the Challenge Arena, explore revamped random dungeons, and experience a multitude of improvements across the board. One of the main changes in this update is the shortening and standardization of player ability cast times, ensuring smoother gameplay.

We're committed to making Dark Envoy as close to perfect as possible, so please continue sharing your feedback with us. We appreciate your support and input.

Thank you for being an integral part of this journey!

Should you have any issues in this patch, or want to play through the game with previous balance, you can always continue your journey on the public beta branch “previous_version”.

New Features / Highlights

  • Player ability cast times have been shortened and standardized for greater responsiveness. Most skills will now cast faster and it should no longer be possible to accidentally cancel a skill before it is cast, resulting in a waste of mana and cooldowns.
  • Added 6 new challenges to the Challenge Arena:
Explosions? Explosions! - Face off against waves of explosive drones. Don't let them get too close!
Krannite Troops - Stave off an attack of empowered krannites, whose weapon damage and attack speed have been increased. You can rely on your increased movement speed within the challenge.
Armageddon - Face off against waves of enemies while dodging the constant shelling from above that only affects your party.
Miniboss Showdown - Face off against a selection of minibossess accompanied by their allies.
Boss Showdown I - Face off against the joint forces of Technomancer Atia and a pair of Vault Guardians in this boss rush challenge.
Boss Showdown II- Face off against the joint forces of Technomancer Ragna and the Rogue Agent, followed by Madman and Theran in this boss rush challenge.
  • Introduced new rewards for the challenges, both new and previous ones, including unique items that can only be found there. All rewards have been reset on your current playthroughs so even if you already finished a challenge, you can replay it now to gain the new rewards.
  • Added a new side objective that can now generate on random dungeons - the Ancient Generator that rewards the player only if they successfully protect it against incoming enemies.
  • Added 4 new miniboss units for the Scorpion, Wild Elementals, Manaless and Crazed Robots families that can now spawn on randomly generated dungeons.
  • Added 4 new biomes for randomly generated dungeons: Mountain Pass, Dark Mountain Pass, Caves and Shattered Lands.
  • Overall cutscene and animation polish including a complete overhaul of top down dialogue cameras to minimize issues with view-blocking environment pieces as well as general camera work and atmosphere improvement.
  • Updated run animations on all humanoid characters.

Dark Envoy - Patch 1.2

by Hiddenx, 17:57

Dark Envoy gets a patch today:

Patch 1.2 - Preview 2

Prepare for our biggest patch yet!

Challenge Arena
The Challenge Arena is a new feature that players can unlock early during their first visit to the City of Bones. To access it, simply find the Arena board in any city or directly enter the Arena on the world map. Unlike the main game, where items drop randomly, the Arena has predetermined rewards, making it an excellent place to acquire unique items, resources, and gold.

As you progress through the game and reach certain level requirements, new challenges will unlock. These challenges range from simple ones, such as defeating a few waves of bandits, to more extreme ones, such as engaging in battles against multiple notorious bosses simultaneously. It is worth noting that when you start a challenge, the obstacles on the arena are randomly generated.

These challenges offer increasingly difficult battles, but they also provide more valuable rewards. In the Arena's enemies are not scaled to your character's level, so taking on harder challenges early on can give you access to higher-tier equipment sooner than you might otherwise obtain it.

We are planning to add even more challenges in the future, featuring unique items that can only be found here. Before you accept the challenge, it would be nice to have a space where you can practice your builds. That's why as a part of patch 1.2, we've also prepared for you the Training Room.

What is the Training room?
It is a space on your ship where you can practice your builds and team compositions. After you pass the door on your skyship, you will enter a special arena equipped with five buttons. Three of these buttons will spawn a target dummy of your choice, allowing you to select from armored, single-target, or multi-target dummies. You will also find buttons to change your party and stop the test.

When you start, you will have 30 seconds to test out your skills. The elapsed time will be displayed at the top of your screen. When you stop the test or the time runs out, the game will show a battle summary with detailed statistics, allowing you to compare the effectiveness of your combos before embarking on your next adventure.

Random Dungeons Changes
Since we have received numerous requests to make Random dungeons more engaging, we have also enhanced them with fresh bioms. With Patch 1.2, you will also encounter new enemies like minibosses that are unique to these randomly generated dungeons.

Additionally, we have increased the number of random events that can happen here and even created a new one that, depending on your score, can give you a greater reward.

What else?
Patch 1.2 is scheduled to be released on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, along with all the features mentioned above and all the animation changes in our previous Steam post. It also brings bug fixes, MAJOR balance changes, and a new NPC that will allow you to respec player characters for gold.

Hope you like the incoming changes. We are committed to making this game as perfect as it can be.

Dark Envoy - Released

by Hiddenx, 17:17

The steampunk RPG Dark Envoy has been released:

Dark Envoy | Launch Trailer

Dark Envoy is live

Dear Players,

Our team is excited and proud to share the result of many years of hard work with you.

Dark Envoy is our attempt to breathe new life into the RPG genre by creating a more dynamic gameplay experience and introducing our own RPG systems that encourage creativity and experimentation. We aim for players to feel as if they are in a sandbox of possibilities.

As an independent, self-funded company without a publisher, we had the freedom to take such risks and break away from genre norms. We know this approach comes with its challenges, but we believe that without risks, there can be no great adventure.

We hope you enjoy our game!

Thank you.

Dark Envoy - About Enemies

by Hiddenx, 16:16

Let's learn more about the enemies in Dark Envoy:

Enemies

Facing Factions, Enigmatic Hybrids, and AI Strategies.

In the world of Dark Envoy, the Empire and League factions, along with the monsters of mysterious origin called Hybrids, will present players with unceasing challenges. Each of these adversaries brings its own blend of strengths and strategies, ensuring that players must adapt and devise innovative tactics as they embark on their adventures. These are but a few examples of enemy families you will encounter, each with distinctive units, skills, and behaviors.

Empire
The Empire faction stands as a formidable force with its array of robots and heavily armored human units. Their mastery lies in harnessing the destructive power of electric and fire-based damage, making them a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield. However, be cautious when engaging the Empire, as they employ blinding grenades and stunning skills to outmaneuver their adversaries. A particularly explosive twist is their robots, which detonate upon destruction.

League
Within the League faction, a blend of Elementals and agile units represents the three races of Krannites, Shadows, and Elves. These warriors rely on Poison and Cold damage, with the added intrigue of being able to summon elementals that represent a diverse range of elemental forces. Their speed and agility are matched only by their cunning, making it vital to stay vigilant against melee units that can quickly close the distance with dashes and deliver swift attacks. Among the League, the druids take on the critical roles of healers and supporters, providing aid to their fellow units from a distance.

Hybrids
The enigmatic Hybrids have recently emerged throughout the land of Jaan, shrouded in mystery and uncertainty about their origins. These creatures wield a unique and potent weapon—chaos damage, which bypasses the armor of their enemies. What sets them apart is their ability to devolve into weaker forms when vanquished, eventually giving rise to two Crawlers. Careful and methodical elimination of these creatures, one by one, is imperative, as failure to do so may lead to a swift.

Dark Envoy - Assassin Class Preview

by Hiddenx, 20:55

Henriquejr spotted a preview of the Assassin class in Dark Envoy:

Assassin - Class Preview

I strike from the shadows

Assassin is an elusive shadow master who is prepared to devastate their mark with a flurry of strikes. Using deception and tricks, they cause confusion among their foes and avoid punishment. We present you with 3 out of the 6 active skills that the Assassin has, giving you a taste of their formidable abilities and making you eager to explore the rest of their deadly arsenal.

The showcased abilities only scratch the surface of the Assassin's capabilities. With three additional active skills and four passive abilities in their arsenal, the Assassin excels at establishing area control before combat begins. Once it does, the Assassin can snipe out strong ranged DPS (damage per second) before reentering shadows. Invisibility does not break on certain skills, allowing for a flexible approach to how the Assassin can be played. It's not the only class with Invisibility, so you can have more classess in the party that can wreak unparalleled mayhem on unsuspecting enemies.

Featuring 4 Base Classes and 12 Specializations, each equipped with their distinct array of active and passive skills, your possibilities for gameplay are virtually boundless. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to describe this RPG as 'sandbox-like' when considering the breadth of available mechanics and systems.

Dark Envoy - Summoner Class Preview

by Hiddenx, 09:05

Henriquejr spotted a preview of the Summoner class in Dark Envoy:

Summoner - Class Preview

Take a closer look at one of the adept specializations.

Summoner is a druid-like Adept who uses their bond with spirits to summon them onto the battlefield and has a strong link with the destructive power of nature. As a last resort, they can become a living vessel, turning their body into a mighty colossus. We are pleased to present you with 3 out of the 6 active skills that the Summoner has, giving you a glimpse of how different Dark Envoy aims to be compared to other RPGs.

[...]

The skills mentioned above are just a small portion of what a Summoner is capable of. There are 3 more active abilities and 4 passive abilities. The Summoner is a valuable addition to any party, serving as a highly versatile support, damage dealer, or tank/off-tank (via its summons).

With 4 Base Classes and 12 Specializations, each having its own set of unique active and passive skills, there is truly no limit to how you can play. You could even say that this is a 'sandboxy' RPG from the perspective of available mechanics and systems.

Dark Envoy - Magic and Technology

by Hiddenx, 15:38

Discover the land of Jäan in Dark Envoy:

The Harmonious Blend of Magic and Technology

Discover the land of Jäan in Dark Envoy

Welcome to the realm of Jäan, a world that shares familiar threads with our own, yet is woven with the touch of arcane wonders and the marvels of advancement.

Within the heart of Jäan resides a delicate equilibrium between two contrasting powers: magic and technology. In the backdrop of medieval fantasy, the League's territories find themselves entangled in the evolving currents of technology. Picture a world where technology stands tall as a contender against the dominion of magic. The Empire, driven by the desire to match the League's mystical might, embarked on a technological journey, sparking a rivalry that fueled the flames of war. Beneath this intricate tale lies the lurking influence of an ominous force, casting shadows over all.

Jäan reveals two distinct magical facets: innate magic interwoven into the very fabric of the planet, and enigmatic chaos magic, whose origins remain a mystery for now. This chaos magic, deceptively unassuming, nurtures an insatiable hunger for dominance, and succumbing to its charms can lead to destruction. This subtle divergence weaves the destiny of Jäan.

As we traverse Jäan's diverse landscapes, stark contrasts emerge. Vast deserts sprawl, bearing the whispers of civilizations long-lost to the annals of time. Amidst this harsh expanse, pockets of life thrive in settlements dedicated to trade and exploration.

Brace yourself for encounters with scorpions, marauding bandits, and the enigmatic riddles hidden beneath the shifting desert dunes. Venture into the grandeur of majestic temples and awe-inspiring laboratories. These sites are a dance of enlightenment and peril, where scavenger tales mingle with whispers of dormant creations, waiting to challenge the mettle of those who tread upon their sacred soil.

Discover the mysteries unfurled by Jäan's lush forests and enigmatic swamps. Here, native magic courses through every leaf and branch, weaving a captivating tapestry that masks the lurking presence of predators. Amidst the beauty lies caution, reminding us to tread carefully and remain vigilant, as danger often accompanies enchantment.

Intrigued? Ready to set forth on a journey through Jäan's realms, where both spells and steel forge a path of adventure that you won't soon forget.

Dark Envoy - Dev Update #1 - Motion Capture

by Silver, 10:58

The first dev update for Dark Envoy explains how the developer is using motion capture.

Perhaps it is an overkill for an RPG game to have hundreds of motion capture animations, but we do not compromise on anything. After all:

"He will win whose army is animated by the same spirit throughout all its ranks."
Sun Tzu

loading...

This is a clip from one of our motion capture sessions in-house. It is taken directly from the capture software and unedited in any way, so you can see that the base quality is already great. We usually spend 1 hour for each animation clip (2-4 seconds) to clean it and make it perfect.

Compared to a laborious process of creating animations by keyframes, which can take between 1 and 3 days (depending on complexity), it is a great time saver and let's us focus more on other features and mechanics.

RPGWatch @ Gamescom - Dark Envoy Preview

by Myrthos, 12:27

At Gamescom I visited Event Horizon to check out Dark Envoy, a game where time is a scarce resource and where tactics play an important role in combat.

Dark Envoy is a game that mixes real-time exploration with turn-based tactical combat. By itself that is nothing special, but they have added some extras to this mix. The setting of the game is a combination of magic and technology, which the developers have labeled as Technomancy and to help with the story they work together with Michael Chatfield, an American author of Sci-fi, fantasy and LitRPG books.

You start the game with two characters, a brother and a sister. They want to fix a sky ship and travel the world. But unwillingly they are pulled into something that is much bigger than they are. As they go along, they will meet other NPCs that they can recruit, each of which has their own side story. At the moment there are 15 NPCs designed using different classes. Some of them are very rare special NPCs that are hard to find, but that players probably will want to have in their team. Next to the NPCs, mercenaries can be recruited, who have no story and will fight for a share of the loot.

Cologne, Germany - August 20, 2019 - Building off the positive response to the announcement of Event Horizon's upcoming title Dark Envoy, the developers have released a new trailer showing a taste of what gameplay awaits Gamescom attendees this week. A non-linear RPG, Dark Envoy offers free world exploration with an emphasis on tactical combat layered with lore and strategy.

Explore the world using a Skyship as your base of operations. Seek mythical locations, and procedurally generated dungeons with optional tactical objectives. Choose wisely where to travel however, as the world map adjusts with the passing of in-game time. Locations will randomly respawn, becoming progressively more challenging for you and your party.

As the Human Empire fights for dominance against the remnants of the Old Races, Dark Technology clashes against Magic — neither side is good and just. The strong prey on the weak taking whatever they please. This is total war, where the defeated will be entirely wiped from the pages of history.

Against this backdrop, Kaela and Kiros aspire to repair their parents’ broken airship in order to travel the world, seeking to face whatever dungeons, challenges, and riches may come their way. They are hungry to learn how to fight, build, and forge alliances and friendships across the known lands. Together, they search for ancient relics and forgotten places. Together, they look to leave a legacy in their wake…

Yet, their journey begins in blood and tragedy.

Your choices are everything and they can reshape your life in this place, even the world around you. Will you become strong enough to survive the journey and reach the end? Will you find the power to change this grim reflection of our own world? Will your legacy be one of peace and honor, or stained by bloodshed and destruction?

When you look in the mirror at the end, what reflection will you see there?
