Dragon Fin Soup - Reviews

by Myrthos, 12:21

Eye found some reviews for the recently released Dragon Fin Soup.

The Escapist:

All in all, bugs, dodgy controls and an overreliance on side missions detract from an otherwise great game that features addictive combat mechanics and gorgeous visuals. If you have a time to spare and patience to make it through the grind, Dragon Fin Soup will offer experienced roguelike fans a rewarding experience. If you decide to buy the game, though, it might be worth waiting for all the bugs to get patched out.

Indie Game Magazine:

Dragon Fin Soup carries a significant amount of replay value, which comes from the challenging monsters players will face, as well as the randomly-generated dungeons, levels, and even missions. Each playthrough feels different, and requires players to explore a new level each time, sometimes dealing with a whole new host of monsters. Though the game can move quite quickly and smoothly, there is no doubt that it is primarily a strategy game. Players that rush through this game without carefully looking over their surroundings or checking for enemies may find themselves quickly and easily ambushed long before they can react effectively. For those playing with perma-death, this can start to feel a little frustrating, especially since players will need to replay the prologue and introductory mission each time they restart their game.

The Outer Haven, 5/10

Though Dragon Fin Soup had a promising concept, the implementation can be rather shallow at times. Deaths often feel undeserved and the combat feels rigid and heartless more often than not. The game has a great deal of potential in theory, but at the moment, this soup is under-cooked.

And there is already a patch out, with a whole range of fixes.

Dragon Fin Soup - Released

by Hiddenx, 23:05

The crowdfunded action RPG Dragon Fin Soup has been released on Steam:

Dragon Fin Soup seamlessly blends genres to create a fresh experience:
half story-driven tactical RPG and half high-stakes roguelike, with a pinch of crass humor and a heaping helping of murder & madness set in a procedurally generated fantasy world.

Meet Red Robin - a charming, yet raging alcoholic bounty hunter, who’d rather get into a bar fight than deliver baked goods. Players must take up Robin’s blades and set out across Asura, a lushly colorful fantasy world that sits on the back of an enormous space turtle, on a journey to discover the secrets of her bloody past.

WARNING!!!
This game is not for the casual player and can be highly addictive.
Dragon Fin Soup contains the following:

  • Superfluid turn-based tactical combat
  • Raging alcoholic bounty hunter heroine
  • New procedurally generated world each time you play
  • Mercenaries for hire and awesome pets to collect
  • Over 60+ hours of roguelike gameplay in Story, Survival & Labyrinth modes

Dragon Fin Soup is hand crafted by a 5 person indie development team -
Grimm Bros LLC.

Dragon Fin Soup - PAX News roundup

by Myrthos, 13:00

Spotted a few PAX articles about Dragon Fin Soup. The roguelike game that features Robin, the hooded girl, with an alcohol problem (although she might not see it as a problem).

PSNation

Probably my favorite addition, to the Rogue-style gameplay, is that in each dungeon or level there are giant enemies that appear to be probably four times the size of your character. These giants are simply frightening when you come across them for the first time, since enemies a usually only takes up a single tile in these types of games. This is definitely the only Roguelike game I’ve personally played that has had huge enemies like this, and I think it’s a great addition.

PlayStation Lifetstyle

The crafting system is actually far more advanced than I ever thought it would be. I already knew that players will be able to create a variety of weapons and items from found materials, but the developers took this one step further. Instead of simply being able to take, for example, logs and create a sword out of them, they first need to be crafted into something else, like a board, which can then be crafted into the hilt of a sword, while other pieces will be used to craft the rest of the sword. Not only does this make crafting in Dragon Fin Soup complex, but it also makes it harder, since crafting can sometimes fail (especially if you are low level), resulting in no new product and the destruction of the old product.

iDigitalGames

The gameplay has been hashed out over the past three years by Strutz and the rest of the five-man dev team at Grimm Bros, and although the characters and setting might be unconventional the format is anything but. RPG fans will recognize immediately the massive amounts of storage, crafting, randomly generated levels and complex enemies. Strutz explained that players will learn a lot about how to win as they interact with the world around them.

Marooners Rock (from before PAX)

The game is played in a top down, two dimensional perspective and is the movement and combat are turn based. Each time the character moves, every other NPC in the currently procedurally generated map moves as well. This leads to having to plan far ahead because the game is a rogue-like with some scripted events. There is also a survival mode with permanent death.

Dragon Fin Soup - Preview @ The Escapist

by Myrthos, 22:43

The last time I saw Dragon Fin Soup was at Gamescom 2014. Unfortunately they weren't there this year. They are however at PAX Prime this year, where we are not. However others are, like The Escapist.

For the uninitiated, Dragon Fin Soup is a bit of a twisted take on the Red Riding Hood fairy tale, with Red being a badass, drunken bounty hunter, rather than hapless innocent girl. She comes ready to fight with guns, bombs, and, of course, plenty of booze. The drunk mechanic is an interesting implementation of health potion restrictions, which are often simply limited to some number of potions in a specific time frame. Despite Red's affinity for hooch, even she has her limits, so if you quaff too many spirits to keep your health up, her drunk meter will fill up, which triggers a drunken rage. In the rage, you lose control of the character, and she will recklessly throw herself at enemies, regardless of the probability of success. It's an easy way to get yourself killed, but sometimes, you need that health boost, so you'll need to take the risk.

Despite relatively simple gameplay, there is a surprising amount of depth to DFS, with 27 equipment slots, as well as several action bar slots for spells and consumables. You've got a deep crafting progression system, with simple recipes being discoverable by trial and error, and more advanced recipes dropping as loot throughout the game. Recipes have levels, which aren't strict limits, but do impose harsh penalties to your success rate, if your crafting level is too far below your desired recipe level. I didn't get to see any of the craftable gear, but given the apparent depth of the system, I expect it to be a fairly robust means of boosting your survivability.

Dragon Fin Soup - Languages, QA and Launch

by Myrthos, 12:45

The Dragon Fin Soup Kickstarter page has been updated with information about the languages that will be available for the game, which are: English, French, Italian, German, Spanish and Japanese. Furthermore there is some information about the QA team and that the game will be released simultaneously on PC, PS3, PS4 and PS Vita.

So most indies like us typically release on one platform at a time, such as STEAM or iOS in English and then do staggered ports to other platforms over time. It is pretty crazy and almost unheard of for a 5 person indie team, on their first RPG title, to even attempt to launch on 4 major platforms in 6 different languages worldwide! But Sony has faith in us as veteran team and we have a great partner with BlitWorks who are working hard on the Sony platforms.

Due to all of the localization and ongoing QA efforts on PC, PS4, PS3, and PS Vita, our partners at Sony have requested we take just a bit more time to proofread, double-check the languages, and conduct additional extensive playtesting on all platforms to ensure DFS is the best we can possibly make it. Our new launch window is now scheduled for Fall 2015. We seriously appreciate your understanding.

To give you a sense of scope of Dragon Fin Soup, our current QA Team estimates put DFS as over 60+ hours of gameplay in Story, Survival and Labyrinth mode combined. And as mentioned before we have roughly 75,000 words that are being translated in 6 languages. That is a TON of content to test and triple-check!

Exact official launch date will be announced to you once we receive confirmation from Sony. We sincerely appreciate your understanding, patience, and support. As an indie, giving you our best means everything to us.

Dragon Fin Soup - Gamescom & PAX Prime

by Couchpotato, 04:06

The Grimm Bros next kickstarter update for Dragon Fin Soup has informatiion about the game from Gamescom & PAX Prime. Here are the details.

Gamescom & PAX Prime Madness!

Apologies for the delayed update, it’s been an incredibly busy time for us this entire month. Grimm Bros just wrapped up presenting Dragon Fin Soup at the debut IndieMEGABOOTH at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, and now we are back in the United States hustling to get our booth ready in time to present at PAX Prime!

Gamescom Report

Gamescom is one of the largest gaming conventions in the entire world. This 2014 convention hosted over 400,000 attendees (holy crap)! The Grimm Bros team had over 40+ meetings with European press featuring hands-on demos and interviews, including 2 video interviews! We were booked non-stop for five days from 10am-8pm with not only press, but fellow backers, devs, and our amazing gaming community.

Our time at Gamescom was a mix between a collaborative and inspiring experience presenting amongst cool indie devs who share a common love of games. We were able to exchange ideas, talk shop, hang out, and have a bit of fun as well. There was a great feeling of all of us being a part of the indie collective and helping one another out.

Dragon Fin Soup - Post-Funding Update #26

by Couchpotato, 06:03

The latest post-funding kickstarter update for Dragon Fin Soup has news from developer Grimm Bros about adventuring sheep, murderous mummies, and a new Wiki.

Adventuring Sheep, Murderous Mummies & New DFS Wiki... Oh My!

Gameiki is a new game wiki site that focuses on indie developers.  They have done a great job building out the initial wiki for us, adding over 140+ pages of content! The Dragon Fin Soup Wiki is now starting fill up with all sorts of goodies, lore and subtle details about the world of Dragon Fin Soup. Gameiki diligently researched and gathered information from all of our news updates, gameplay videos and dev diaries to date.

The Dragon Fin Soup wiki is also integrated/linked with our DFS forums, online store, and Twitter so you can easily keep connected to our latest news & forum discussions. Check it out!

Crowdfunding Update

Grand Total raised to date: $125,940 (Including Adjustments & Add-ons)

Development Update

It has been a great week and the team was able to get a LOT of things done.

Diagonal Walking was added to keyboard and pad controls both as 4 separate keys and also by pressing 2 of the up/down/left/right keys. A new option was added to the config where you can now toggle auto attack on or off. Traditionally, many RL games trigger attack with the directional buttons; in our game, however, since we have tall walls and tall props, you can often accidentally attack things when you walk around. With the auto attack mode off (by default), you now have to press an attack button on your joypad or keyboard to perform an attack, like in an action RPG, basically. Opening doors still works with the directional keys and the mouse controls have not changed since they work differently all together.

New sprites were created for the Playable Sheep (aka “Adventuring Sheep”) and we have also added more playable monsters to the labyrinth and survival mode. Now you can be a murderous Mummy out for carnage :D

We know we have not yet reached the next stretch goal but we now added the playable undead characters anyway! Enjoy, and we hope to see you on our forums - http://grimm-bros.com/forum/

Dragon Fin Soup - Labyrinth & Sheep Update

by Couchpotato, 04:17

In the next post-funding update for Dragon Fin Soup we gets news on the new labyrinth mode, and playable sheep from the games developer Grimm Bros.

Labyrinth Mode & Playable Sheep Update!

Grimm Bros was at the TooManyGames event this weekend where we got the chance to meet a bunch of cool gamers :D It was really great to share with everyone a bit about Grimm Bros and Dragon Fin Soup. Best of all I think we made some new friends with over 100+ new FB Likes and Twitter Follows. Thanks everyone for your support!

Crowdfunding Update

Grand Total raised to date: $125,835 (Including Adjustments & Add-ons)

Dev Update

The team is working hard on the Endless Labyrinth Mode, we are making good progress there, it is already playable and some of the characters are unlockable.

Playing with the sheep will be pretty tough as you will not be able to equip weapons and most of the armor except for the earrings, rings, arm wrist and body slots. The sheep will still be able to use magic, crafting even and buy and sell things to vendors, it is after all an intelligent sheep that wears a scarf :P

We are also working on a surprise feature that was part of some stretch goal we did not reach but we decided to add it anyway so Randis been working on some weekends on that one. Things are pretty busy but we are making good progress.

Dragon Fin Soup - Help Us Name a Monster!

by Couchpotato, 00:25

In the latest kickstarter update for Dragon Fin Soup the developers ask for help from all who backed the game to name a new monster. Here are the details.

Help us name a Monster!

Summer is finally here for most of the team now. Its super hot in Bangkok and finally warm enough not to wear a sweater in Philadelphia and Chicago. Of course our team members in San Francisco have been enjoying sunny weather for awhile now :P
Everyone is feeling good and is hard at work on the game.

Crowdfunding Update

We have been making slow steady progress in our Slacker Backer campaign towards our next Stretch Goal and are just over ½ way there. For those of you who already backed us that means potentially more cool features for you!

Here is our Grand Total raised so far!
Grand Total: $125,305 (Including Adjustments & Add-ons)

Game Info - Monster

Scavenger Snail

This giant Land Mollusk is commonly found in the Cherberry Marshes and the Bleemshroom Forests. The Scavenger Snail is a Carrion-Eater but will not shy away from attacking Adventurers when hungry (always) or during mating period (always). Its tough shell is a popular crafting material for Orcish Armor.

We don’t have a cool name for this Monster yet so feel free to contribute some ideas in the forum thread! http://grimm-bros.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=121&p=1265#p1265

Next week we will pick 10 of the suggested Names and create a Poll where you can decide the final name :)

Dev Update

We have added 2 new types of interactive Objects to the world. The Mysterious Crystals!

We will not spoil the exact purpose of those Crystals as we would like you to figure out what to do with them by yourself later! All we can say is that they will involve some simply minigames, rewards, punishments and possibly even combat related mechanics. We have also started working on the haunted mansion dungeon and related missions and will be able to share a screenshot with you in our next update!

Dragon Fin Soup - Marching Forward!

by Couchpotato, 05:35

Its time for the next post-funding update for Dragon Fin Soup. This time the games developer Grimm Bros has a general update on the games progress.

Marching Forward!

Hope you all had a great and relaxing weekend. Here are some new updates!

Crowdfunding tracker and next Stretch Goal!

We have finally been able to setup a counter which tracks all of the backers and funds raised from our Kickstater and Slacker Backer campaign on our Dragon Fin Soup website - http://dragonfinsoup.com/store.html Please keep in mind the counter does not include any adjustment or add-ons to pledges as we track those manually.

Here is our Grand Total raised so far! $124,935
(Including Adjustments & Add-ons)

Dev Update

Among other things, last week we have added a Combo Counter to the game, it will need some more testing and tweaking but this is basically how it works:
Each time the hero lands a successful hit with a melee attack the counter goes up by 1, giving the hero a X% damage bonus for every 10 hits. If 5 turns in a raw are spent without landing a hit the counter resets. This way it is possible to build up momentum by attacking one foe after another.

The maximum % damage bonus is of course capped and hitting plants or props does not count as a hit (unless a hit is caused by a falling tree) Multi-hit weapons generate more hits of course. The combo counter will be located on the right of the screen, right under the mini map.

Thanks everyone for your support and as always please feel free to send us any ideas, suggestions, feedback or questions :)

Development Updates

Still working on various the control inputs, making great progress there, pad controls are working for the most part of the game but will need more tuning. Fun controls are very important so we are not rushing it.

We started some asset production for a palace and another village, lot’s of work to be done… Will share some screenshots when we have more final results, this will take some time. More optimization, tweaks and bugfixing happened this week, also some new, additional gameplay designs were made. (Random encounter with Bandits)

Jade is working on a new music track for a new Sakura Forest level, a new location that will be added with Morgiana. Much work, very concentrate, so ongoing, wow!

Dragon Fin Soup - Podcast @ Games Abyss

by Couchpotato, 05:22

Games Abyss shares a new podcast from PAX 2014 about Dragon Fin Soup.

Continuing our discussion on our most favorite indie game experiences from PAX East 2014, Matt and I return to gush about three more titles: Dungeon Defenders 2, Prodigy, and Dragon Fin Soup. With the common thread of fantasy role-play, these three games really made us realize just how important the indie scene is to us and to the gaming community as well.

Broken Cartridge has another audio interview this week. This time they interview one of the founding members of Grimm Bros Ash Monif to talk about Dragon Fin Soup.

by Couchpotato, 04:30

Grimm Bros has another update for Dragon Fin Soup with information on the games first stretch goal, and they recommend another kickstarter called Toby’s Island.

We’ve almost hit our 1st Stretch Goal!

We hope you all had a nice weekend. Its very exciting to see that we are almost at 200%, getting close to our 1st Stretch Goal! Thank you all for backing us and helping us achieve our dream!

Shipping dates and Goodies

We have gotten a lot of questions about when the game will ship and wanted to clarify. Our plan is to launch Dragon Fin Soup in 2014 and the 2015 April date that is listed in our Rewards is our deadline for all of the physical goods. There is a very high chance that people will begin to receive their backer rewards much earlier than this date. We will add this info to our FAQ.

Project spotlight - Toby’s Island

Today we would like to give a shout out to Toby’s Island - A 2D RPG adventure involving monster-raising, town-building, puzzles, classic turn based combat & exploration. If pokemon and harvest moon had a love child, it would probably be this :)

Thanks again everyone for backing Dragon Fin Soup and support getting the word out about the game. We appreciate all of your comments and questions. Please feel free to ask us anything, we love hearing from you.

Dragon Fin Soup - Update# 5, To Infinity & Beyond

by Couchpotato, 05:43

Dragon Fin Soup was funded, and has recived $37,146 of the games $24,000 goal. The developers Grimm Bros have posted a new update with more information.

To Infinity and Beyond with New Tiers!

Last Wednesday was a FANTASTIC day for us! We were approved on Steam Greenlight, we hit our initial Kickstarter funding goal, and we announced our game on the official Sony blogs all on the same day! So far we have received a lot of very positive feedback from the Sony Playstation blog posts and we are very grateful for all your support, comments and encouragements! http://blog.us.playstation.com/2014/03/19/dragon-fin-soup-coming-to-ps4-ps3-ps-vita

Now lets look to hit a few of those Stretch Goals and really make Dragon Fin Soup shine!

New Ghost Edition & Artisan Edition Tiers

After getting lots of requests and messages we decided to create two new lower range tiers for everyone - the Artisan Edition and Ghost Edition. We were considering adding Add-ons but were advised by many other developers to avoid that as they would add a lot of extra work on our side, mixups and chaos :D We are just 5 guys who work remotely and one of us will have to manage all that…

We also received many requests regarding a printed Artbook! We would love to do it but adding it to lower tiers or as an add-on is very risky because unlike prints we would have to order a high minimum number of books and (hundreds/thousands). Perhaps we can consider this in the future :)

We are now getting into the swing of our updates and will look to provide fun interesting information for everyone.  Adding a bit more formatting and layout for better readability.

Randis has been so excited about the Kickstarter that he can’t sleep these days.  So he decided to make this video to share with you all of how he goes about creating a new paintings of a poster for Dragon Fin Soup.

Dragon Fin Soup - Update# 3, Almost Funded

by Couchpotato, 04:20

The kickstarter for Dragon Fin Soup only needs another $3,000 to get funded , and the developers Grimm Bros have posted a new update with more information.

We are getting there!

We have some exciting new updates!

We are in the Top 50 in Steam Greenlight and almost 75% towards our initial goal on Kickstarter! This is insanely exciting for us and to thank you all for backing us we are sharing with you a FREE Dragon Fin Soup Wallpaper!

You can download the wallpaper at multiple resolutions here: http://dragonfinsoup.com/wallpaper.html

Dragon Fin Soup - Update# 2. Half Funded

by Couchpotato, 04:37

The Grimm Bros happily announce their game Dragon Fin Soup is half funded in just four days in the games latest kickstarter update.

Woot! We are ½ Way There! - Update #2

Ash & Randis here. We hit the 50% mark in our initial goal! Thank you all once again for backing us!

Your comments and support on getting the word out about Dragon Fin Soup is great - Please keep it up! All of your comments are very much appreciated as they help with discoverability of our project on Kickstarer and we get a chance to get to you know you! Please feel free to ask us more questions or give us feedback! We love to chat :)

We also want to share that Today we just broke into the Top 100 in Steam Greenlight as well! Right now we are ranked at #91. If you can please take a quick moment to vote for us on Greenlight that would be great - every bit of support helps :)

One of many ideas we would love adding to Dragon Fin Soup is Beast Transformation for Red Robin!

Taking damage or consuming drinks slowly fills up the Limit Bar. When the bar is full, for a number of turns Robin transforms into a mighty, uncontrollable beast! As powerful as this Beast is, its completely out of control and adds a new tactical element to the gameplay…

Players will need to ask themselves "Should I drink this potion and risk a Rampage?" Who knows, maybe there even will be ways to control the beast with some ancient binding magic or potions.

Thats it for now! Thanks again for all of your support and keep sharing with us your feedback. We are getting there!!! More updates coming soon.

Dragon Fin Soup - Update # 1, We Love You Guys

by Couchpotato, 04:46

Grimm Bros has posted the first update for Dragon Fin Soup with a thank you to all backers who helped make the game half funded in three days.

We love you guys! - Update#1

Ash and Randis here!  First of all we want to thank you all for backing us and believing in our dream!

We got some great tips and feedback from some of you and it would really help if you can leave a comment on our project.  The more comments the better - it helps set the tone and keeps the conversation going.  As a small indie with just a few people its tough getting the word out.  Please help us get the word out about Dragon Fin Soup!

We have some cool updates to share with you all. Here is an image of the 1st poster that backers can get in the Blood Ring Edition!

A few people voiced concerns about DRM and Linux/Mac version that we wanted to clarify.  We have updated the project Stretch Goals and added additional info in the Rewards section.

All backers will have the choice of platform:
- Steam
- DRM Free for Windows, Mac, Linux
- PS3, PS4, and PS Vita

We will port the game for Linux and Mac but there will be no simultaneous release of DFS for all platforms.

As a 5 person dev team we simply can’t manage to port the game to every platform at the same time, this would be tough for us to manage unfortunately. We will do our best but Linux and Mac version will come out a bit later!
As you can see, the Stretch Goals include some porting costs as well, that is because adding new features to the game will require porting those features for all the planforms as well, it does not mean that Linux version will not be released but it would greatly help and accelerate the process.

Dragon Fin Soup - Kickstarter Now Live

by Couchpotato, 11:36

Grimm Bros have launched their kickstarter for Dragon Fin Soup asking for $24,000. The game is described as a turn based tactical action RPG with roguelike elements.

We see Kickstarter as a great platform to connect with gamers and are here asking for your backing to help us finish the game and make Dragon Fin Soup a phenomenal experience!

Grimm Bros is a new indie RPG game company of veteran developers. We are very small and 100% indie. Our entire team is spread around the world with members located in Philadelphia, Bangkok, Chicago, San Francisco, and London. We all work together online making games from our home offices, pubs, cafes... basically anywhere with a power outlet and wifi.

As an indie studio it's important to be in control of the development without not having to bend and compromise from outside influences. We are indie because we really want to make the kind of games we would personally enjoy playing and not doing work for hire or work on projects where the focus is on the business model.

Our development has been funded so far with the help of our amazing friends and family in addition to our own personal money, time, and efforts.

Dragon Fin Soup is our debut title that we've been pouring all of our time, efforts, and hearts into over the past year in order to craft a fantastic game experience to share with you. Every day we proudly sacrifice our souls to the elder gods of gaming to bring you yummy RPG goodness!
