Remnant 2 Review - The Final Verdict
Remnant 2 is the sequel to Gunfire Games' breakout third-person shooter Souls-like, offering new worlds to explore, enemies to fight, and mysteries to solve. The gameplay will feel familiar for those who enjoyed the first game's combat and pacing.

Here's why I'm very keen for Remnant II (Hands-on impressions)
Remnant II certainly is more Remnant, but it's by no means resting on its laurels. There are some big changes coming to core elements of the experience - from class design to visuals to procedural generation and more. Based on my hands-on time with it, all the new stuff is paying off - big time.

Remnant 2 - Preview @ Techraptor

Remnant II Preview
In all of gaming, there’s a certain beauty in grinding for loot. Watching your damage numbers get higher so you can kill bigger things to get even better gear never really gets old, whether it’s the recently released Diablo IV or the upcoming Remnant II from Gunfire Games and Gearbox. Though I missed the prequel, I was able to preview Remnant II at Summer Game Fest and get a good taste of what I’ve been missing.
If you’re not familiar, Remnant: From the Ashes is a third-person shooter that launched in 2019. In a little over a year, it sold more than 2.5 million units, so it’s no surprise to see a sequel. I played it alongside two developers from Gunfire, and they walked me through a mission to show off the gameplay loop. We explored a procedurally generated map, looking for the boss at the end.
To start off, we all picked from four archetypes. I chose a long-range sniper class called the Gunslinger, which could scope in and do high damage from afar. Each archetype also starts with a special ability, and the Gunslinger's was essentially wall hacks, granting everyone in the party the ability to see enemies through walls.
As we explored the stage and entered new arenas, enemies came at us from every direction, even behind sometimes. As far as gunplay goes, it felt pretty great to mow down waves of enemies. With headshots, I could take down most of the small fry in a hit or two.
For any enemy who got close, I swapped to my pistol or, as a last resort, used my melee weapon. I didn’t find the melee attack to be as effective, but to be fair, once the enemies are that close to you, it only makes sense that you’re at a disadvantage. One of the other developers was playing a tank-like archetype called the Challenger, and he seemed far better equipped for close-range encounters, if that’s your preferred playstyle.

Remnant 2 - Interview
Shacknews interviewed a level designer about Remnant 2:
Remnant 2 - Creating a Sequel, Deigning Levels & New Archetypes
When the original Remnant: From the Ashes launched, its mix of third-person shooter action and Souls-like difficulty struck a chord with many a Shacknews staffer. The action was intense to say the least and provided a nice 3-player squad-based experience akin to that of the Destiny series. Now, Gunfire Games is ready to take all the goodness from the original title and crank it up to the next level with the upcoming Remnant 2, which is looking chock-full of new features and quality of life improvements. I had a chance to go hands-on with an early PC build of the game during GDC 2023 and it has left me wanting more.

Remnant 2 - Designed as a Co-op Experience
Like its predecessor Remnant 2 is designed as a co-op game:
Remnant II is aiming to be more of the same, and that's alright
Co-op shooters with RPG elements feel like they're a dime a dozen these days, but when Remnant: From the Ashes released in 2019 it did so to widespread critical acclaim; now with Remnant II, Gunfire Games aims to build on what was already a solid foundation by delivering an expanded and upgraded experience. We had the chance to get hands-on with the upcoming release last week during Summer Game Fest, and we're interested to see more in the weeks and months head - especially when it comes to co-op multiplayer.
Between all of the above changes, and the improvements to how your playable character controls - that alone would be enough to make us excited for what the rest of Remnant II has in store for us. That being said, we do have a number of concerns after our hands-on with the game. Namely, the lack of crossplay at launch. Now, Remnant II is far from the only title to have skipped crossplay; but with recent games releases putting much more of an emphasis on the feature, especially upcoming titles that were also at SGF, it's hard not to feel at least a little awkward about its absence. The reason this sticks out to me, namely, is that while other press had the opportunity to play Remnant II in co-op, my session is singleplayer only - and while I had a good time, and I do believe that the game will be worth playing even solo, it's undeniable that Remnant II has been designed as a co-op experience first and foremost.
