The Surge - A Walk in the Park Review

by Hiddenx, 10:39

Gamingbolt has reviewed the addon The Surge: A Walk in the Park:

The Surge: A Walk in the Park DLC Review – Ashes of CREOland

A Walk in the Park shows improvement, but is still rough around the edges.

2017 was the year that the rest of the gaming landscape caught up with From Software and we saw more than a few Soulslikes, each taking a mutation of the punishing action RPG series and going a different way with it. While ELEX took that and gave it an open world, and Nioh brought the exacting combat Team Ninja is famous for to bear on the genre in feudal Japan, Deck13’s The Surge decided that a sci-fi setting would be a great fit.

The Surge, while certainly a good time, had a few issues when it launched. Despite that, it was a solid game, and a competent Souls-like with some unique ideas that made it stand out a bit. All of that is also true of the expanded content found within A Walk In The Park, but the setting alone doesn’t drastically change the mechanics or tone of The Surge as a whole.

[...]

THE GOOD
Better world design and a willingness to slow down as it tells its story, good level design, a tighter experience compared to the base game.

THE BAD
The flaws of the original game such as bad storytelling and mechanical nitpicks, persist. The new drops also won't do much for players unless they're on a fresh run.

Final Verdict
The Surge: A Walk in the Park shows the team at Deck 13 are getting better and better with everything they develop, and the expansion as well as the base game itself remains compelling enough if you're a fan of the Souls-like. Whatever the team does next, I'm sure they'll bring something even more absorbing than The Surge.

Score: 8/10

The Surge - Demo Released

by Silver, 14:33

@RockPaperShotgun The Surge now has a demo available.

A demo is now out for The Surge [official site], the new Dark Souls-inspired sci-fi action-RPG from the studio behind Lords of the Fallen. Our boy Brendan declared it a “serviceable” action game, one he had fun with for a bit but ultimately didn’t feel compelled to finish. Which sounds like a game that might be a lark to poke in a demo.

You can grab The Surge’s demo on Steam (look for the ‘Download Demo’ button buried in that page).

The Surge - Getting a demo next week

by Silver, 13:13

@PCGamer The Surge will get a demo next week.

The future-apocalypse action-RPG The Surge is a flawed but interesting game: "Dark Souls in a junkyard," as we called it in our review, although lacking in some of the touches and polish that make Dark Souls stand out. A solid 60/100 review score is a tough place for a game to be, especially one that costs $50. It's too good to easily ignore, but a hard buy at the price without trying it first. So Deck13 and Focus Home Interactive have come up with a plan. A demo!

The Surge - Launch Trailer

by Myrthos, 16:05

The launch trailer for The Surge, which will be launched next week Tuesday the 16th of May, has been put online already by Focus Home interactive.

loading...

The Surge celebrates release next week with action-packed Launch Trailer There’s just one weekend left before hardcore action-RPG The Surge releases for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on May 16! Battle through a world gone mad as Warren, on his first day of work at CREO – a megacorporation that has been hit by a devastating catastrophe. Today, prepare for The Surge’s brutal combat and dystopian setting with the action-packed Launch Trailer.

Balancing risk and reward is key during The Surge’s combat, as the unique loot system gives you greater control over what you claim from defeated enemies. In visceral combat individually target specific body parts, damaging them with a combination of vertical and horizontal attacks before slicing the part off entirely. What you dismember directly determines what piece of equipment you loot! When approaching an enemy, you face a difficult decision: do you target an unarmored body part for a shorter fight, or risk a lengthier, damaging battle for a chance at slicing off a shiny new piece of equipment?

To get the best loot you’ll need to take on the most difficult enemies, so positioning and speed are vital. Use your exo-enhanced dodges, blocks, ducks and jumps to avoid attacks while managing stamina, ensuring you’re always in the right place to strike the limb you want, or ready to avoid a potentially damning blow. The rules of combat apply to both you and your enemy: get hit in an unarmored limb, and you’ll go down faster. Take advantage of the enemy’s weaknesses while balancing your own, and you’ll walk away with their strengths!

Prepare for The Surge next week, releasing May 16, on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 4 Pro, Xbox One and PC – preorder today and receive three exclusive in-game bonuses. Visit the official website for more info.

The Surge - Behind the Scenes Trailer

by Myrthos, 16:05

The next trailer for The Surge provides some behind the scenes insight into how the combat and the settings of the game were created.

loading...

The Surge's brutal combat and unique setting are explored in behind-the-scenes trailer

Prepare for The Surge May 16

Hardcore Action-RPG The Surge comes to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on May 16, 2017. Go behind the scenes in today's trailer, as the Deck13 team discuss how they created the game's brutal combat and unique sci-fi setting.

Delve into The Surge's industrial, near-future Earth setting, which tackles issues of environmental destruction, corporatism and misuse of technology relevant to our own world. Taking control of the exo-suited Warren, players will explore rich, secret-filled environments and venture deep into the heart of tech company CREO's devastated facility - all while battling crazed employees with fried cranial implants and robots gone haywire.

Using the limb-based targeting system, players can exploit enemies' weaknesses – though as Deck13's Thorsten Lange states, “the same rules apply for the enemies.” Positioning is of the utmost importance, and even the smallest misstep can end in death. Warren isn't an “overpowered superhero”, and combat animations were given credibility through extensive motion capture sessions with a stuntman, resulting in combat that feels weighty and satisfying.

Prepare for The Surge, coming May 16 to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 4 Pro, Xbox One and PC.
Set in a heavily dystopian future as Earth nears the end of its life, those who remain in the overpopulated cities must work to survive as social programs become saturated by an ageing population and increasing environmental diseases. As the intelligence of technology incrementally increased over the years, many jobs for the human race had been made redundant, forcing Earth's citizens to head out into the suburbs seeking labor, aided by exoskeletons to improve their efficiency. The world of The Surge offers a very grim vision of the future, where the evolution of our technology, our society and our relation with the environment led to a decadent state of the Human civilization. The Surge features innovative combat mechanics and an original character progression system based on modular upgrades gained through tight, visceral combat.

Watch The Surge's Hardcore Action RPG Combat in New Trailer

April 20, 2017 - Deck13's upcoming hardcore Action-RPG The Surge comes to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on May 16, 2017. Today's Combat Trailer challenges you to survive the deadly CREO facility, making use of The Surge's fast, technical combat system.

As showcased in the Target, Loot & Equip Trailer, make use of vertical and horizontal attacks as well as strike power to target and dismember specific limbs and loot what you cut off. Looting upgrades for your exo-suit is key to progression, and surviving challenging combat situations is a matter of skill.

Positioning and speed are vital, so make use of your exo-enhanced dodges, blocks, and jumps to avoid attacks while managing stamina-ensuring you're always in the right place to strike the limb you want or to avoid a potentially damning blow. The rules of combat apply to both you and your enemy: get hit in an unarmored area, and you'll go down faster. Take advantage of the enemy's weaknesses while balancing your own and you'll walk away with its strengths.

Throughout your journey you'll be assisted by your industrial drone, with abilities once used for CREO's industrial needs, now manipulated into a fighting machine. Shield yourself or burn, knock down, pull, and blast enemies in The Surge's brutal melee combat.

The Surge arrives May 16 to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Visit the official website for more info.

by Myrthos, 22:10

There is a new trailer for The Surge.

The Surge - "Target, Loot and Equip" Trailer

Coming May 16 - Pre-orders now open for consoles and PC

April 6, 2016 - Deck13's upcoming hardcore action-RPG The Surge comes to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on May 16, 2017. Today, the "Target, Loot and Equip" trailer highlights the game's limb-slicing loot system in all its bloody, brutal glory.

The Surge empowers players by giving them control over what they loot from defeated enemies. Target specific body parts before damaging them with a combination of vertical and horizontal attacks; the dismembered part then determines which piece of equipment is looted―the schematic corresponding to the sliced armor part, salvaged materials for crafting the corresponding piece, or even the weapon wielded by the enemy. This means that when approaching an enemy, players face a difficult decision: do they target an unarmored body part for a shorter fight, or risk a lengthier, more damaging battle for a chance at slicing off a shiny new piece of equipment?

Balancing risk and reward is core to succeeding in The Surge, and bold players can walk away from a fight with amazing rewards. The toughest enemies drop the most powerful weapons and armor, so if you see a piece of equipment you like, you'll need to fight hard for it―or die trying.

Sci-Fi Action RPG The Surge Unveils 14 Minutes of Uncut Gameplay with Developer Commentary

February 17, 2017 - Upcoming sci-fi action RPG The Surge today reveals 14 minutes of gameplay with commentary from Deck13 Game Designer Adam Hetenyi. Explore the dystopian environments in CREO's mysterious industrial RND complex, the Abandoned Laboratories.

Fitted with an industrial exoskeleton, you must fight your way through CREO, equipping the spoils of combat to your suit. Take advantage of The Surge's unique limb-targeting system to attack and cut off parts of the enemy you want to equip or craft.

Targeting a part of the enemy that is armored will deal less damage, but you will earn the opportunity to deal a finishing blow that will cut off the limb intact, allowing you to loot the spoils, blueprints, and tech scrap used to level up your exoskeleton.

The Surge features vertical and horizontal attacks, which are used in combination with parries, ducks, jumps, as well as boosted dodges-courtesy of your exoskeleton-culminating in swift, snappy, precise combat situations unlike anything you have experienced before.

At CREO, you will meet survivors who need help or who can offer assistance. Accepting missions can yield extra rewards, but you will have to balance that against your desire to go deeper into the complex, as the stakes grow ever higher-once dropped, your tech scrap will diminish over time.

Face the dangers of CREO and set your own challenges. Accept missions, learn more about CREO's history and lore, and fight various mini-bosses, or play it safe and struggle to survive- it's up to you.

The Surge slices its way onto PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in May 2017.

The Surge - Bad Day at the Office

by Myrthos, 16:19

A new trailer has been released for The Surge.

The Surge's New Trailer is a Bad Day at the Office

Deck 13's new hardcore action-RPG The Surge today unveils a CGI trailer exploring Warren's first day on the job at CREO, the megacorporation on a mission to save a dystopian world from itself.

Freshly recruited as an augmented worker at CREO, Warren's first day coincides with a catastrophic event during the routine surgical operation meant to graft-through flesh and bone-employee exo-suits. This marks the first in a series of brutal events, turning this first day at CREO into a hellish nightmare of robots gone haywire, crazed employees with fried cranial implants, and artificial intelligence who all want Warren dead.

Now equipped with a state-of-the-art exoskeleton, you'll have to improvise in order to survive-tools manipulated by CREO workers, while not originally meant for combat, make for effective lethal weapons. The equipment pieces compatible with your exo-suit will make you faster, stronger, and sturdier. During battle, target your enemies' limbs, slice them, and retrieve the attached equipment to improve and power-up your own suit-allowing you to delve deeper in the CREO complex and attempt to put an end to the madness initiated by the Surge.

Make the most of your exo-suit, armors, and almost limitless armament combinations to survive CREO when The Surge slices its way onto PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in May 2017.

The Surge will be showcased to international press during the What's Next de Focus taking place in Paris on February 1st and 2nd.

The Surge - New Screenshots

by Myrthos, 20:51

Here are three new screenshots for The Surge.

Sci-fi action RPG The Surge shows off CREO's modular exo-armor.

Deck13's upcoming sci-fi action RPG The Surge today reveals the industrial armor sets of international corporation CREO, a company that set out to save the world. Set on a dying Earth in a not-so-distant future, something went very wrong inside CREO, and you, as a new employee find yourself trapped in a sector of the company overrun by malfunctioning drones, robots, and security personnel.

The LIQUIDATOR, featured in the first screenshot, is fitted with industrial attachments for use in areas prone to hazardous material spillage. Built around the slogan "quality protective gear for the safest workplace", the Liquidator offers super-human resistance to radiation, fire, and toxic spills, with mobility aided by the exo-skeleton.

The second screenshot features CREO's PROTEUS medium physical protection armor set. An experimental set equipping certain of CREO's security personnel, the PROTEUS is an advanced and light-weight armor granting a small health regeneration effect. It also only needs medium core power cost allowing for a little extra juice for implants.

This last screenshot features a mix of armor sets. LYNX was developed for workers requiring speed, flexibility, and precision. Far from standard issue, few CREO workers would benefit from its inherent advancements in hydraulics. It features low core power cost, but this comes at the cost of physical and elemental protection against radiation and other environmental hazards. We also see elements of MG GORGON and BLACK CERBERUS armors, designed for heavy security and riot control actions.

Each item in The Surge serves a purpose for CREO, often originally separate to combat. Be it industrial, manufacturing, for lifting or handling hazardous materials, or on-site security, the player will cut off and equip thousands of combinations of items salvaged in battle.

The Surge will release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC in 2017.

The Surge - Impressions @ FextraLife

by Hiddenx, 09:42

FextraLife has checked out the Action RPG The Surge:

The Surge Gameplay Impressions: Visceral Combat, Weapons, Armor, Implants & More

Last month at Gamescom, we were given the opportunity to play Deck 13’s upcoming mechanized Action RPG, The Surge. Upon seeing the game at E3, we were blown away by the beautiful graphics and fast-paced combat and we couldn’t wait to get a chance to dismember some enemies and find out how the game plays. Having sat down with the game, we have a ton of impressions on what we experienced.

Design

Immediately after picking up the controller and beginning the first stage, you will notice that the game world looks vibrant, moderately futuristic and very industrial. You begin the game as the protagonist, Warren (there is no custom charcters), who has just awoken from a blackout to find that things in his work environment have gone extremely wrong. The area is littered with broken machinery and your coworkers have similarly devolved into violent, zombie-like husks.

You work uniform is a mechanized suit that can be customized and upgraded throughout the game to transform it into a suit of destruction. Each limb, chest and head can be switched out, modified and enhanced. Players will collect parts to do this by dismembering enemies, using Deck 13’s new targeting system that works a lot like Bloodborne’s, only here, you can target various parts of the enemy while you remain locked on.

The Surge - Interview with Deck 13

by Silver, 08:48

@RPG Site they interview Deck 13 Interactive about The Surge.

RPG Site: For people that are not familiar with The Surge, what do believe is the main appeal of the game?

Jan Klose: I think the main appeal is the close combat in a futuristic environment. Which is something that is really new, and we are going very deep into this combat system. It is very tactical, and there is a lot of choice; especially because you can target individual body parts and even cut them off and craft items with what you pick up.

RPG Site: I noticed in the demo during the boss encounter that there were several ways to go about the fight. In this case the easier path to victory was taken, however the harder path grants you better loot. So is there a risk/reward system in play when it comes to obtaining items?

Jan Klose: Exactly. So with our combat system, you can target the weak body parts on an enemy to bring them down faster. However you will probably see enemies carrying stuff you want to have, so you will need to target the parts of their bodies that make the fight much harder, but the reward for beating them is much bigger.

RPG Site: The Surge has a very unique aesthetic, why did you decide to go with a look that encompassed many vibrant colors?

Jan Klose: Well for our game we think it is important that it is a very hard and harsh setting. It is dark and grim, but we did not want to be taken over-serious, so there's some tongue and cheek to it. We wanted to tell a serious story without the visuals being too bleak with the visuals.

[...]

RPG Site: The Surge features a lock on system similar to that of Zelda or Dark Souls, is combat best in one on one engagements?

Jan Klose: In our game it is, because we really like dual based combat. Sometimes there will be 1 or 2 additional enemies but normally there will be only duals.

RPG Site: Crafting was mentioned several times during the demo, does the game feature a crafting system that players can really lose themselves in?

Jan Klose: Well you can craft a lot because there's no shop in game for you to buy supplies and equipment. So every time you want something you will need to make it yourself, and you will need the right ingredients. There is a lot of weapons, armor sets, and items you can craft in game; it's a pretty deep system.

RPG Site: Is there are final words you have for people interested in The Surge?

Jan Klose: If you like hardcore games, close combat, and smashing your enemies into pieces then you should take a look at The Surge.

The Surge - New Screenshots

by Aubrielle, 03:12

New information continues to trickle about the upcoming sci-fi RPG The Surge.  GameBanshee has some new screens for us.

There are a few promising sci-fi RPGs coming down the pipeline yet this year, and one of them is Focus Home and Deck 13's The Surge. To give us another brief glimpse of what's to come, the publisher treated us to two new screenshots from the game, which we've uploaded to our image gallery. These images depict some of the security forces we'll be going toe-to-toe with, and word is:

They use the same exo-suit technology as you but have tools built for combat, making them incredibly deadly foes. In The Surge, you will not just be facing opponents your own size; towering mechanical enemies armed to the teeth are ready to face against you.

More.

The Surge - Interviews and Previews

by Myrthos, 23:01

Eye spotted two interviews for The Surge.

Vice:

What lessons has the team taken away from the experience of making, releasing, and reading the feedback to Lords of the Fallen? That game was loved in some quarters, but criticised too, and you obviously want the next game to be bigger. Is there anything you know you didn't quite realise on Fallen that you're definitely making up for with The Surge?
Yes, a lot. Firstly we were of course happy that so many people played and enjoyed Lords of the Fallen; we would never have dreamed that this would actually happen. But with a lot of gamers come a lot of opinions, and of course criticism. So we tried to listen to this as much as possible, and mix it with our own observations and ideas. Take the level design, for example. It's a bit open at the beginning of Lords but then it becomes rather linear. With The Surge we're creating levels in a completely different way, all revolving around game design and story to create a vast world that opens up as you play. You don't just "revisit" locations you already encountered, but you need to "dig deeper" later in the game to harvest its full potential. Attentive players will always find the path leading through the levels; but every level consists of a lot of different layers that can't be explored on the first visit. You'll need to come back there later with your newly acquired powers and skills to unlock all of the secrets. Well, at least most of the secrets. Unlocking them all will be really tough. If you just try to find the fastest way through the game, you'll most likely become beaten up rather badly by the final opponents.

Gamewatcher:

GameWatcher: Can you talk about the exoskeleton the player wears? How does that affect him? Presumably it makes him stronger and harder to kill…

Jan Klose: Basically it makes it much easier to do stuff than you would be able to otherwise. It’s a physical enhancement. You can move and jump very quickly, and it also has armour parts so you can’t be hurt that easily. The exoskeletons have different functionalities, so you can equip the one that you think is best for the situation you are in. When you see an enemy and you see they are wearing something you want, you can kill them and take their armour. It’s a cruel, basic system of the game, but they are also very mean to you, so you won’t have a guilty conscience doing that! You will also meet good characters who you can do deals with and complete side quests for, so it’s not all just you and the monsters.

And then there are also these two previews.

Escapist Magazine:

The combat is quicker than Lords of the Fallen. Much quicker. Even basic dodges can carry you half the length of a room, so getting distance on deadly enemies isn't that hard - but they're either deadlier or faster to compensate. There's an extra layer of combat to manage that I thought was really clever, as well. When you have an enemy locked on, you can then target their individual limbs and parts - letting you try to bypass your enemies' most armored bits. Which limb you destroy using custom finishing moves also determines what loot you get from enemies. Limb targeting gives the game's fight-die-repeat gameplay some extra staying power: If you die and go back, you've got another shot at a complete set of gear from those enemies. In the example we saw, an untimely death to a wandering security robot let the player pick up a few extra parts for a full suit of heavy gear.

The Sixth Axis:

Your time into facility is likely to be haunted by voices of others, coming through to you via the radios. You’re not the only survivor and others are trying to escape or simply keep moving forward. The chatter of two such survivors being cut short as some big, dreaded thing descends upon them once more neatly foreshadowed the boss character in the demo.

Admittedly, it’s not particularly horrifying as a giant many limbed ring with jet thrusters to fly comes in to attack, but it looked to be a typically exacting challenge to beat. It’s purpose in the facility wasn’t clear, but it certainly didn’t like any living humans passing through.

The Surge - A challenging RPG

by Hiddenx, 20:32

Pongo spotted this interesting VG24/7 article about The Surge, a sci fi Dark Souls type game by the devs behind Lords the Fallen:

[...]

Again, like the limb targeting system, implants must be sufficiently developed and (seemingly) limitlessly diverse in order to convince players that the careful management of them is worth the time and effort it’s sure to take to uncover them. The Surge’s setting is one that radiates a lust for experimentation and progression free from the prison of ethics and human compassion and, hopefully, that will result in the provision of implants that are more than simple health, strength and status effect modifiers.

No matter what, though, this is a genre in need of a different aesthetic gimmick and The Surge seems to be on course to provide that. Whilst that might be enough to cause people to take notice of what Deck 13 is trying to do, any long term success is going to rest in those elements that have the potential to differentiate this game from a crowd that is dominated by the superlative work of From Software.

The Surge - First Images Released

by Silver, 21:02

Focus Home Interactive have given fans a first look at The Surge and its main character.

The surge exoskeleton

Deck13's upcoming action-RPG today released its first screenshot, along with a render artwork of the main character.

Set on a dystopian Earth nearing the end of its life, The Surge offers a grim vision of our future. Accelerating advancements in technology and our abuse of the environment has led to an overly decadent civilization that now lies on the brink of collapse.

The Surge features innovative combat mechanics with a unique character progression system based on modular upgrades gained through the tight, visceral combat.

The images released today show The Surge's hero, equipped with his exoskeleton which serves as a base to upgrade your equipment. When fighting enemies, you can target specific parts or limbs to recover specific pieces of armor, weapons, or equipment you want to attach to your own exoskeleton. Of course, the best parts will often be the hardest to cut off - and they'll usually be attached to the most dangerous enemies! Even the most common enemies can prove deadly, and the game features imposing bosses who will truly put your wits, guts and reflexes to the test.

Be sure to stay tuned as we unveil more information about The Surge over the coming months.

The Surge - Interview @ Gamereactor

by Hiddenx, 09:56

Gamereactor interviewed Deck13 CEO and Creative Director Jan Klose about The Surge:

Fighting the Future: Jan Klose on The Surge

We were recently offered the opportunity to talk to Deck13's Jan Klose and find out more about the studio's follow up to Lords of the Fallen. With the studio ditching the fantasy setting of their previous game and parting ways with that game's publisher, we wondered what The Surge was all about, and how the team would take the lessons learned from their last outing and make them count in their next.

[...]

GR: The universe you're creating for The Surge looks very much like a dystopian future. What happened to make the world look like it does?

JK: We really want to use trends that we have in our world today and want to transform them into the future. So we are not doing a sci-fi game, but it's really like you just said, a dystopian near future. And our idea is really to think about what happens to the world if things were to go on in a bad direction. So what happens if technology advances but it's not in our favour? What happens to the environment under the pressure of worse conditions? So all these things we try to combine together and create some vision of the near future where we place the hero in. And we also think about the companies, the big tech companies, that we have today. What might become of them if they don't turn out to help the people, but maybe harm them? We really want to tell a grownup story and in the end what you see in the pictures is something that was once working and maybe positive, but has taken a terrible turn. The name, The Surge, this is something that happened to the world, but I cannot right now explain exactly what it is. But also the player will only find out in the course of their journey through the game.

The Surge - 5 Things You Need to Know

by Aubrielle, 03:17

The dev team behind The Surge shares five things they want us to know about the project.

Hey guys! This is Jan Klose, CEO and Creative Director at Deck13. You may know us from Lords of the Fallen, but we’re back with The Surge, our new action-RPG.

We know we haven’t talked about The Surge much since we announced it earlier this year, but today we’re here to tell you a little more about the world, combat and upgrade system, and talk a little about what inspired it!

So without further ado, here are five things you absolutely need to know about The Surge:

1. The world is inspired by the worst-case scenario for today’s problems

Earth, in a dystopian future where robotics and mega-corporations work hand-in-hand in an effort to preserve what’s left of Earth’s fragile climate. Quite frankly, the real world is what inspired us most.

I mean, take a look at recent trends in technology, robotics, AI, renewable energies… but also the political, environmental and economic development in the last 30 years. Where will all this end? If it were to end badly… welcome to The Surge.

There’s also an element of philanthropy we’ve touched upon in the story; where corporations fronted by internationally lauded characters claim they’re working for the greater good, but each year encroach more and more into the creepy. Drones to deliver goods, advertisements that seemingly read your mind, where would that all go in a few decades?

More information.

The Surge - Interview @ Gamereactor

by Aubrielle, 03:40

Gamereactor talks to Deck13's Jan Klose about The Surge, the follow-up title to Lords of the Fallen.

Gamereactor: Lords of the Fallen was something new for your studio, do you want to move in the same direction with The Surge or will it be something completely different?

Jan Klose: It is in part something new. We want to keep the things that we really liked about Lords of the Fallen and that players liked. And still, on the other hand, we want to present something that feels totally new. We will keep the core gameplay which for us this duel-based one-on-one combat that we had with Lords of the Fallen. We want to extend this and put it in a whole new universe. So we will deliver new things gameplay wise, as well as setting wise.

GR: Do you want to create a new universe because you're done with Lords of the Fallen, or is it because you have new ideas that you want explore?

JK: There are two things. One thing is that we really felt like we would be repeating ourselves telling another Lords of the Fallen story, and the other thing of course is that publisher CI Games and Deck13 decided that we would not go together for the second instalment of Lords of the Fallen. So we are with a new publisher now with Focus Home Interactive. And of course it makes sense to think about a new universe. It gave us the chance to do something completely new. Like really thinking from scratch.

The Surge - Video Interview (German)

In a German video interview we get more information about Deck 13's The Surge. The game for which they could not show much more than a single screenshot, with an equal amount of info at Gamescom.

If there are any German speaking watchers who can give the run-down on what is said, don't hesitate to do so.

RPGWatch Feature - Taking an Early Look at The Surge

by Myrthos, 22:33

One of the games at Gamescom I checked out was Deck 13's new action-RPG The Surge. Unfortunately there was not much that could be shared about the game. Still I managed to jot down a couple of paragraphs.

The game is set in the near future, some 60 years from now when the technology that humanity has come to depend upon has turned against it. The world has becoe a  devastated place where enhanced humans and inhuman creatues live among the ruins of a technologically gifted society. This is a future with a sufficient amount of problems to need a hero.

It is not an open world game. It is based on levels that you open up during the cause of the game, making your game world bigger and bigger. The game features respawns, but it is not entirely clear how this will implemented.

The Surge - Interview with Creative Director Jan Klose

by Hiddenx, 22:19

Gamestar interviewed the Creative Director of Deck 13, Jan Klose, about the recently announced Action RPG The Surge:

loading...

(Video in German)

After Lords of the Fallen Deck 13 wants to make an Action RPG again. This time in a dystopian world 60 years in the future. The world is pretty close to the present world, but several things have gone very wrong. Technology has turned against humankind. You can expect a deep crafting system, exo-suits and action-combat.
Inhabitants of the planet dwell in overpopulated cities where they work together to survive. Social programs have become "saturated" by the aging population and environmental diseases are increasing.
