Coridden - Dev Update #21

by Hiddenx, 10:41

Couchpotao spotted dev update #21 for Coridden:

Unveiling the Secrets of Aasha: The Story of Coridden

Dev Update #21

Greetings, Shifters!

While Coridden's visuals and smooth multiplayer gameplay may be eye-catching, there's an important layer of the game that's hard to show through screenshots and GIFs. Beneath its visual surface lies a story that weaves together elements of adventure, mystery, and the indomitable spirit of humanity. Let's explore it together!

Coridden's post-apocalyptic narrative is set on a distant planet, where remnants of old human society and technology are scattered across a landscape reminiscent of Earth's Mesozoic Era.

The story takes place many years after a mysterious disaster forced colonists to leave their city and the advanced technology that used to keep them alive. The colonists have since built a new city, learning to adapt and survive in a world where dangerous reptile beasts roam freely.

A group of brave people called the "Scavengers" go into dangerous places to find resources and artifacts that were left behind after a catastrophic event. Our protagonists, the Dayal siblings, become a part of this group after their lives take an unexpected turn when they equip ancient hi-tech devices that grant them extraordinary shapeshifting powers.

King Arthur: Knight's Tale - Review @ RPG Codex

by Hiddenx, 10:37

The RPG Codex checked out King Arthur: Knight's Tale:

RPG Codex Review: King Arthur: Knight's Tale

Back to the Once and Future

The year 2020 saw the success of yet another Kickstarter campaign. This time the people out for free money were the Hungarians of NeocoreGames, known for their cool King Arthur strategy games and a bunch of Diablo clones no one cares about, such as the Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing. The Kickstarter was launched to fund the development of a tactical turn-based RPG in the King Arthur series, titled Knight’s Tale.

As you may have inferred from the previous paragraph, Knight’s Tale immediately drew my attention. King Arthur: The Roleplaying Wargame might be one of my favourite strategy games of all time, and I never quite understood why they dropped the series to develop action RPGs, so merely looking at the various screenshots immediately made me feel at home.

Yet the developers never produced a game of turn-based tactics before, so naturally many people may be wondering whether Knight’s Tale is any good, especially given how easy this is to screw up. Now, two years after release and with a number of major patches applied, it is time to settle these doubts.

[...]

Kneel Before your King

In the end, Knight’s Tale gives us a game that is first and foremost about combat. It’s obvious to me that the primary objective behind its development was to make sure that everything about the combat worked right, with no exceptions or handwaves, and that everything else was ten priority levels under that. Neocore knew precisely what they set out to accomplish and they did it with great success. This game simply knows what it’s about and it sticks to its guns exactly where it matters. Playing something with a focus and vision this clear and well-realised is always a true joy. As far as the genre of ‘Turn-Based RPG Encounters: The Game’ is concerned, Knight’s Tale is definitely one of its highlights. Its secondary or tertiary features may be lacking in some aspects, but that really doesn’t matter when the core gameplay is so well done. The atmosphere and style are also the icing on top that elevate it above many other entries in this genre, which tend to offer just the combat and nothing else really worth noting.

It took me a whopping 100 hours to finish, and frankly speaking, I was somewhat happy when it was over. Primarily because at some point I realised it was taking way too much of my free time, but also because by the end you’re mostly progressing on autopilot with your overpowered heroes, and the fatigue that eventually settles in just makes you look forward to the finish line. That’s why I strongly recommend playing on the hardest difficulty, and maybe even trying the roguelite mode if you’re feeling adventurous. But make no mistake – this is not a game that is best ‘dropped midway’. By quitting early, you’ll be depriving yourself of a significant part of the experience. Technically, there’s also post-endgame content that I think is supposed to be super-challenging, but I never even tried it. I couldn’t really be bothered.

Still, I had a great time with Knight’s Tale. Neocore has already announced a new standalone campaign for it too, which is Roman-themed and about the ‘lost’ IX Legion crawling out of Tartarus to end up in Avalon. It’s unbelievable, but for once I actually have something to look forward to among upcoming RPGs.

Factions, Falconer, and Warlock | Coming to Last Epoch February 21st

Happy Saturday, Travelers!

For today’s pre-patch blog post, we’re taking a look at information regarding the three headlining features coming on February 21st: Trade Factions, the Warlock, and Falconer!

There have been a lot of new Travelers recently joining us in the final stretch to release, so for today’s post, we’re going to be covering all of the information regarding these three big features.

Item Factions

On January 11th, we released our deep dive into the Item Faction system. Item Factions is our answer to the eternal trade debate. Offering an option to players who want trade as part of their itemization experience, and those who don’t, without splitting the player base, and without being left behind the other.

Unforetold: Witchstone - Update

by Hiddenx, 10:45

Unforetold: Witchstone got a big update:

Community Update #2 - Hotfix details, VOD and more!

Hello Adventurers!

It’s still hard to believe that after working so many years on Unforetold: Witchstone, the game is finally out on Early Access. It’s been a crazy and difficult but fulfilling journey building this sandbox version of a cRPG from scratch. But our work isn’t done yet and we’ve barely scratched the surface of this playground called Kalsundia. As one of the ways to show our gratitude to all the players supporting Unforetold: Witchstone at the very beginning of its Early Access, we’ve been tirelessly working on hotfix updates for the past few weeks.

We’d like to use this opportunity to once again thank everyone who has either bought the game, sent us feedback, reported a bug, talked to us about their experience, made content about the game, wishlisted it, or simply sent words of encouragement. This support means the world to us and helps us get through the more difficult times.

The Big Update

Since the launch of the Unforetold: Witchstone, our team has been scanning our Discord server, the Steam forums, live streams, YouTube videos, and reviews looking for critical areas of improvement. Your comments help us prioritize what features and bug fixes need to be tackled next. As such, we’re very happy to release the fifth and biggest update to date for Unforetold: Witchstone, which Malik and Phil previewed on a Twitch live stream last Friday.

The Black Grimoire: Cursebreaker - The Ghost of Greywall

by Hiddenx, 10:41

The Early Access title The Black Grimoire: Cursebreaker got a major update:

Early Access Update 9 - The Ghost of Greywall

Greetings adventurers!

Today we're excited to bring into the game its single biggest content installation so far - the Dungeons of Greywall! All in all, the windy corridors of this new dungeon span an area larger than Haywind City and come packed with new enemies to fight, new crafting to unlock and ultimately new abilities to learn. There's also a hefty amount of new written content that comes in the form of the single largest quest anywhere in the game, which will guide your journey through the dungeons.

The dungeon's level design features a new set of assets we created to achieve a more unique look that also sets the area apart from other regions in the game. Combined with an ambitiously scoped quest, getting this update together really did take a lot of effort on our part and we're a little delayed from when we hoped to deliver it. But hopefully our efforts also show in the gaming experience the new content delivers.

This time we won't type out detailed patch notes due to the amount and focus on new material, but we will showcase the new content in a devblog format.

Ancestral greetings my humanoid kin, for this Dev Diary I’d like to discuss the process of summoning this DLC to life. Be warned it is an image heavy thread!

Also don't forget to watch our recent Primal Fury Midgame Dev Stream

The art team, specifically the Art Director (me) the Concept Artists along with the Creative Director, are the first to explore the DLC. Through the ideation process of moodboards, keywords and rough sketches we set out by exploring the big questions -

Are we alone in the universe, what mood do we want to convey, what are the visual gaps we want to fill, and what would our players love?

Last Epoch - Healing Hands Skill Tree

by Hiddenx, 10:26

Learn more about healing in Last Epoch:

Healing Hands Skill Tree | Coming to Last Epoch February 21st

Hello Travelers, and welcome to day three of the pre-patch blog posts!

Healing Hands is a skill which has existed in the Paladin tree for quite some time, without being able to be specialized. There’s various reasons we waited to create a tree for this skill, one of the bigger reasons being that we wanted this type of skill to be able to support nodes which help cooperation with other players.

With our release of Last Epoch on February 21st, Healing Hands will finally be getting its long awaited skill tree. While Healing Hands at its core offers a large amount of support, focusing on healing, one should remember that the Paladin is not a back-line player. Healing to a Paladin means more than mending wounds, but also healing the world of its evils. As such, Healing Hands offers a great deal of customization for offensive ability as well, including multiple ways to make it a directly damaging ability.

Healing Hands

As a baseline, Healing hands is an ability which casts a medium sized area of effect which heals all allies, including yourself for an immediate burst, and applies a heal over time for three seconds.

Zoria: Age of Shattering - About the Enemies

by Hiddenx, 08:53

Tiny Trinket Games presents some enemies of Zoria: Age of Shattering:

A glimpse into the Enemies in Zoria

Commanders!

Creating the world can be hard and complicated, but fortunately, to us it was also fun. Today we wanted to offer you a glimpse into the creatures you'll surely encounter while playing Zoria: Age of Shattering. While there is plenty to choose from, with fantasy classics such as skeletons, dragons or ghosts, we picked a bunch that we personally like the most, so it's kind of random.

Let's start with the terrifying Cave Claw Crawlers. As their name suggests, these grotesque creatures dwell in caves and other dark places. Their exoskeleton is a fortress of resilience, blending seamlessly into the darkness, making them masters of stealth and surprise. Armed with large, sharp blades, they are a force to be reckoned with, combining brute force with speed and agility.

Next, we have the Water Elementals. These entities, despite their aquatic namesake, are often found roaming the land. Their origin is a mystery, but it's believed they are born from concentrated magic energy, animating the prevailing element in their vicinity. They are solitary creatures, aggressively engaging in combat when approached. The older they are, the more powerful they become, making every encounter a thrilling challenge.

Then there are the Gargoyles, magical constructs crafted by the wizards of old. At first glance, they may seem like ordinary statues, but get too close, and their true nature is revealed. These ancient guardians are carved from enchanted stone, and their cold, crystalline eyes gleam with an unnatural glow. They are fiercely loyal to their creators, and in battle, they channel their magical essence into devastating attacks.

Last but not least, we have the Ancestor Guardians. These ancient creatures belong to the civilization of the Ancestors. Equipped with powerful weapons and armor, they are highly resilient and capable of dealing extensive damage with their magic attacks. They are sentient beings, capable of communicating in the common tongue, and are best avoided if possible.

Whether you're battling a Water Elemental or sneaking past a Cave Claw Crawler, make sure to stay alert and apply tactics! Now, gear up and prepare - Zoria: Age of Shattering launches on March 7, 2024!

Stay tuned for more updates and get ready for an epic adventure this March! Follow us on Twitter and join our Discord if you haven't already.

Until next time,

Baldur's Gate 3 - Patch 6 now live

by Silver, 22:48

Patch 6 for Baldur's Gate 3 is now live and brings many improvements. The Patch notes do contain spoilers so here are the main features.

Version Number: 4.1.1.4763283

Ah, two days after Valentine’s Day. Cupid has shot his arrows, the chocolates have gone on sale, and the flowers have started to wilt. The perfect time to release a patch!

Patch 6 for Baldur’s Gate 3 launches today, and it’s packed full of quality-of-life improvements, fixes, and a little bit of romance.

On with the show!

Love Is in the Air

Watch out for garlic breath.

We’ve made improvements to locking lips with your chosen romantic partner! All characters now have unique kisses that reflect their personality, with an emphasis on the plural. These kisses are randomised and vary from the incredibly romantic to… uh, a little more intense. Kisses have also been improved for shorter and taller body types, so embrace without delay.

A forehead kiss for tender moments or for when there’s a bit of food stuck to your eyebrow.

In addition to improved smooches, we’ve also improved some of our endgame cinematics to better reflect the connection between players and their partners - love truly has been in the air in the office, or perhaps it’s something in our air fresheners.

Every Whittle Helps: New Camp Animations & Improvements

Keep at it, Halsin.

Whilst exploring your campsite, you’ll notice new idle animations for some of your companions. Not everyone enjoys standing around, and these behaviours should help your campsite feel more alive. Though, we wouldn’t interrupt Shadowheart when she’s polishing her spear. In addition, you’ll now be able to dismiss a party member while speaking to the party member you want to replace them with - so no more going back and forth like a Machiavellian party planner!

Improvements and Fixes Galore

Have fun.

Patch 6 isn’t all ambience and canoodling, though. We’ve fixed a deluge of player-reported issues (Shield Bash fans, rejoice!), and made several tweaks and improvements to the game. If you’re playing in Honour Mode, expect a few extra surprises in the form of new Legendary Actions for bosses, and maybe a bit of extra trouble from a certain Mound. Good luck with that one.

We’ve also made some improvements to speaker selection. When dialogue triggers automatically, the game will now try to prioritise your avatar as the main speaker - so your party members should have less main character syndrome when clearly you’re the star of the show.

We continue to work on future updates to Baldur’s Gate 3, with further improvements, fixes, and patches yet to come, but before we dive into the full highlights for Patch 6, a warning about mods! If you experience issues after installing our latest update, please check whether the issue persists with mods uninstalled. Currently, mods aren’t officially supported, so some mods may become temporarily incompatible with new patches and hotfixes. If you continue to have issues after uninstalling all mods (yes, even that one), please reach out to our support team.

Patch 6 will be going live today on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, and will require approximately 150GB of free space to install for those playing on PC and Steam Deck. If you find yourself without the space to install the update, we recommend uninstalling BG3 and then re-downloading the patched version.

We know Mac players will be keen to get hands-on with the latest fixes and improvements, but we’ll have to ask that you sit tight for a little longer while we continue to work on bringing future updates to Mac alongside PC versions. We truly appreciate your patience, and are sorry for the inconvenience. We’ll keep you updated with our progress, so make sure you’re following us on Twitter and Facebook to see when Patch 6 will drop for you!

SPOILERS - Please bear in mind some of the entries below might contain spoilers, proceed at your own risk

Disco Elysium - Expansion cancelled

by Hiddenx, 18:52

Eurogamer reports that the standalone Disco Elysium expansion has been cancelled:

Disco Elysium standalone expansion reportedly cancelled and quarter of staff facing redundancy at ZA/UM

UPDATE: Fresh report adds new testimony from affected staff.

Interviews with two named employees have been published discussing the circumstances behind the current wave of layoffs at the studio, with a third of staff reportedly set to be let go following the cancellation of a Disco Elysium standalone expansion.

In one startling quote, principal writer Dora Klindžić compared joining ZA/UM after its takeover by CEO Ilmar Kompus and his brother-in-law Tõnis Haavel to "being born into Yugoslavia in the '90s: you've just missed the party and now all you get is the bloodshed.

"The last two months of [the cancelled expansion] were rife with crunch, burnout and conflict."

ZA/UM is yet to comment on the report. Eurogamer has separately contacted the studio for more.

Fellow ZA/UM staff member Argo Tuulik, the last remaining writer to have contributed to Disco Elysium, has described how he and other staff affected by the layoffs discovered they were to be let go.

During a video call, the company bosses announced the project's cancellation and layoffs alongside a promise the developer was "nurturing intellectual growth, fostering a strong sense of community with our team". Shortly after, Tuulik said staff being laid off received a letter informing them that they would "have a score assigned to them based on objectively applied selection criteria and the lowest scoring people are gonna go on the chopping board".

Dark Envoy - Patch 1.3

by Hiddenx, 22:05

Henriquejr spotted a new major update for Dark Envoy:

Patch 1.3 is Live!

New challenges, rewards, revamped random dungeons, and much more!

Get ready for an epic update packed with thrilling content! Prepare to tackle new challenges in the Challenge Arena, explore revamped random dungeons, and experience a multitude of improvements across the board. One of the main changes in this update is the shortening and standardization of player ability cast times, ensuring smoother gameplay.

We're committed to making Dark Envoy as close to perfect as possible, so please continue sharing your feedback with us. We appreciate your support and input.

Thank you for being an integral part of this journey!

Should you have any issues in this patch, or want to play through the game with previous balance, you can always continue your journey on the public beta branch “previous_version”.

New Features / Highlights

  • Player ability cast times have been shortened and standardized for greater responsiveness. Most skills will now cast faster and it should no longer be possible to accidentally cancel a skill before it is cast, resulting in a waste of mana and cooldowns.
  • Added 6 new challenges to the Challenge Arena:
Explosions? Explosions! - Face off against waves of explosive drones. Don't let them get too close!
Krannite Troops - Stave off an attack of empowered krannites, whose weapon damage and attack speed have been increased. You can rely on your increased movement speed within the challenge.
Armageddon - Face off against waves of enemies while dodging the constant shelling from above that only affects your party.
Miniboss Showdown - Face off against a selection of minibossess accompanied by their allies.
Boss Showdown I - Face off against the joint forces of Technomancer Atia and a pair of Vault Guardians in this boss rush challenge.
Boss Showdown II- Face off against the joint forces of Technomancer Ragna and the Rogue Agent, followed by Madman and Theran in this boss rush challenge.
  • Introduced new rewards for the challenges, both new and previous ones, including unique items that can only be found there. All rewards have been reset on your current playthroughs so even if you already finished a challenge, you can replay it now to gain the new rewards.
  • Added a new side objective that can now generate on random dungeons - the Ancient Generator that rewards the player only if they successfully protect it against incoming enemies.
  • Added 4 new miniboss units for the Scorpion, Wild Elementals, Manaless and Crazed Robots families that can now spawn on randomly generated dungeons.
  • Added 4 new biomes for randomly generated dungeons: Mountain Pass, Dark Mountain Pass, Caves and Shattered Lands.
  • Overall cutscene and animation polish including a complete overhaul of top down dialogue cameras to minimize issues with view-blocking environment pieces as well as general camera work and atmosphere improvement.
  • Updated run animations on all humanoid characters.

Caribbean Legend - Released

by Hiddenx, 21:40

The open-world RPG Caribbean Legend has been released:

Caribbean Legend

Epic Story

Welcome to the Caribbean in 1654 AD, a place teeming with opportunities and mysteries. Assume the role of Charles de Maure, a young French noble who embarked on a journey to the New World to assist his brother. What initially appeared as a simple family matter quickly evolves into a lifelong adventure. Immerse yourself in the tale of a noble dilettante who rises to become the most influential figure in the Caribbean. Riches, titles, power, and romance – the ultimate booty awaits, and it's up to you to seize it all.

- Embark on a 200-hour-long story.
- Undertake hundreds of quests.
- Experience a historical narrative with a touch of mystique.
- Explore romantic interests and companions.
- Choose from various career options, from general-governor to pirate baron.

New World

The Caribbean Sea – a realm of dozens of islands and cities, a grand archipelago shrouded in mystery and secrets. From the summits of Indian pyramids to the ocean depths, unique rewards, quests, and curiosities await. This open world is your sandbox, and you are free to explore and shape it as you see fit. Your decisions determine where to go, what to do, and with whom.

- Discover dozens of islands and settlements.
- Build your very own colony.
- Explore caves, pyramids, jungles, Indian tribes, and lost cities.
- Visit taverns, brothels, shipyards, churches, forts, and many other points of interest.
- Engage in treasure hunting and gambling.
- Experience dynamic weather and the serene turquoise sea.

At Sea

Owning a warship is a privilege, a symbol of status and luxury. You are among the select few who can afford such grandeur. Begin your journey with a simple sloop and work your way up to commanding a ship of the line or even a fleet of these formidable vessels, ready to plunder cities at your whim. No one will stand in your way. Yet, in moments of tranquility at sea, relish the stunning views, embrace the sense of exploration, or navigate the heart of a storm.

- Command dozens of ships representing the glory of the Age of Sail.
- Customize, paint, upgrade, and repair your vessel.
- Engage in unforgiving yet enjoyable naval combat.
- Experience intense boarding action, from the upper deck to the captain's cabin.
- Collect unique vessels to rule the seas.
- Manage booty distribution, morale, and the threat of mutinies.
- Assemble a formidable team of officers.

On Land

Captains are most vulnerable when they set foot on land. Surviving naval combat can be challenging, but at least you won't face it alone – your crew will have your back. Land battles are different. Bring your companions with you, poison your weapons, study the terrain, craft deadly items, and confront thugs, soldiers, pirates, and rivals head-on.

- Tailor your character's build – become a heavy swordsman, a nimble rogue, a master sharpshooter, or a silver-tongued diplomat.
- Equip yourself and your companions with a wide array of swords, axes, rapiers, armor, muskets, and pistols.
- Craft amulets, ammo, potions, and always be prepared for battle.
- Seek out challenges – the more you fight, the stronger both you and your character become.
- Command military operations from raiding to sieges.

Turn Based Lovers - Innovative Deck Builders

by Hiddenx, 21:34

The Turn Based Lovers present some innovative Deck Builders:

THE MOST INNOVATIVE TURN-BASED DECK BUILDERS

The deck-building genre, particularly the rogue-like deck-builder subgenre, has become tremendously
popular ever since the release of Slay The Spire and the abundance of clones that rushed to capitalize
on its success.

While many deck-builders attempt to clone Slay The Spire’s formula, there are a handful of games
that make an effort to innovate on its gameplay and structure. Of course, not every deck-builder
takes inspiration from Slay The Spire, which itself took inspiration from tabletop games such as
Dominion is extremely reminiscent of the niche indie title Dream Quest.

SLAY THE SPIRE
ACROSS THE OBELISK
MARVEL’S MIDNIGHT SUNS
BENEATH ORESA
GRIFTLANDS
MONSTER TRAIN
COBALT CORE
WILDFROST
INSCRYPTION

[...]

CONCLUSION
Deck-builders have become so popular and release with such frequency that it’s easy to miss the few fresh and innovative experiences that are released every year. However, these games each offer something new and interesting in an over-crowded market.

While it could be argued that games such as Dream Quest and even Dominion (an innovative tabletop deck-builder with a Steam version) are arguably among the most innovative deck-builders out there, these games arguably offer more streamlined experiences for modern audiences.

If there’s a hidden gem deck-building game that didn’t make it to this list,  be sure to let us know on Discord, Twitter, and on our YouTube channel.

Ludus Mortis - Early Access almost done

by Hiddenx, 20:32

Ludos Mortis is close to a full release:

From Early Access to Full Release

The EA is almost done

Hi,

The Early Access period is coming to an end.

Since the EA release (late September 2023), Ludus Mortis has improved in every way: now it has a better User Interface, more contents, and the gameplay is more balanced.

I've released 20+ version of the game in the last 4 months with more than 300 improvements, fixes and new features, so thank you for every precious feedback you gave me.

I will release another update with all the remaining 3 dungeons; this will complete the story arc and bring to conclusion the journey of the gladiators. After this update I will announce the Full release date, that is now really close.

At the same time, I'm probably going to remove the demo from the store: it's really outdated and I think that it doesn't represent anymore the experience of the game (and I honestly I don't have time to update the demo, sorry!)

Thank you again for all your comments and feedback: I think that Ludus Mortis has improved a lot during this period thanks to the community, so please continue to give me your opinion and suggestions, here on the Steam Community HUB or on my Discord Server.

Thanks Farflame!
