Original Sin EE - Review @ Push Square

by Hiddenx, 22:48

Stephen Tailby (Push Square) has reviewed Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition:

Sin-ply divine

PC gamers have been roaming through Divinity: Original Sin since the middle of last year, after a successful Kickstarter campaign and some hefty delays. For these day-one players, it's been yet another long wait for the Enhanced Edition to roll out: an immense - and free - update to the initial release that fleshes out and extends an already large role-playing game. It provides controller support, fully voiced characters, split screen local co-op, a revamped story, and many, many other tweaks that take it to the next level. Now, we console users are getting our first taste of Divinity: Original Sin, with the extra features that the Enhanced Edition adds built in as standard - and what a feast it is.

[...]

Conclusion

A splendid RPG that tests your skills and your brain, Divinity: Original Sin - Enhanced Edition is a challenging, sprawling, and enchanting title from the very start. Our only quibble is a complex UI that can sometimes get a little too busy, but it doesn't take away from the game's many strengths. Not only does it have an impressive combat system and interesting quests, it features a reactive world that you can truly leave your mark on. Add in a winning sense of humour, well thought-out gameplay systems, and a charming aesthetic, and you're left with an RPG that would be a sin to miss.

Score: 9/10 - Excellent

Original Sin EE - A Must Play @ Gamezone

by Hiddenx, 07:56

Gamezone recommends the Enhanced Edition of Divinity: Original Sin:

Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition Review

Last year, both cRPG and Divinity fans were treated to an absolutely stellar experience with Original Sin on PC. The once prominent genre faded into obscurity in the 2000s, but Larian Studios decided to do something about it, and of course, gauge public interest through Kickstarter. Divinity: Original Sin was a fantastic combination of both old and new. It preserved the classic turn-based gameplay that cRPGs were known for, and kept the open ended gameplay of Divinity, while introducing some stellar new companion mechanics, and bringing the once 2D isometric game into a full 3D isometric view, with a fully rotatable camera view.

This year, owners of the original will be getting the Enhanced Version for free while console players will be getting a chance to try out this previously coveted PC-only genre for the first time.

But how does The Original Sin translate to consoles, and is the Enhanced Edition worth checking out?

Let's find out.

*Note: Since we never got around to reviewing The Original Sin when it first came out, we'll be diving into the story as well as the gameplay elements that make this game unique, which would have already been covered in the original review.

[...]

The Verdict

If the previous page wasn't an indicator, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition. Sometimes it certainly pays to wait and in this case, with the crazy amount of tweaks, changes, and updates, Enhanced Edition was an absolute joy to play.

PC players who have already delved into Original Sin get the Enhanced Edition free, which comes with all the new goodies as well, so it's worth revisiting there as well. However, the biggest triumph is that console owners will get to experience this otherwise PC-centric title with fantastically translated controls, stellar voiceovers for all characters, and some gorgeous graphics for good measure.

Don't let Divinity: Original Sin pass you by, especially if you're a fan of long, deep and ultimately enjoyable RPGs. What made reviewing this game even better, was knowing that Divinity 2 successfuly got funded on Kickstarter just under a month ago, meaning that an entirely new adventure awaits next year.

Original Sin EE - Release Day

by Myrthos, 16:50

It probably has not escaped your attention that Divinity: Original Sin Extended Edition is released today.

It’s been over a year in the making, but it's been worth it. Today, we are very proud to deliver to you Divinity: Original Sin - Enhanced Edition!

What makes our Enhanced Edition different from others? Check out our latest home-brewed trailer to find out just how far we went to bring you the ultimate Divinity experience:

loading...

How do I get my copy of Divinity: Original Sin - Enhanced Edition?

If you already purchased the original Divinity: Original Sin, you will receive the Enhanced Edition FREE as a download in your Steam or GOG account. This will appear as a second entry in your library, next to Divinity: Original Sin. Download it and get to playing! (Oh, and spread the word to your friends who didn't try it yet :) )

If you’ve never purchased the game, head over to Steam or GOG and make your purchase!

A thousand changes!

We have a short list & a long list of changes.

The long list contains over 1000 changes distilled from a change-list that contains more than 13000 changes! But since the short list is a bit more readable, we put that one here.

Errrrr... is the Tactician Mode for me?

It could be, but only if you're really comfortable with cRPGs in general, and Divinity: Original Sin in particular. Check out the following interview with Edouard (who worked on the combat design) to discover what Tactician Mode is and how it was created.

Original Sin EE - More Reviews

by Myrthos, 12:49

Here are three more reviews for Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition.

Venturebeat, an ongoing review

Last year’s deep, organic, interactive, and occasionally funny Divinity: Original Sin made PC RPG players very happy, and this year’s Enhanced Edition will definitely do the same. If you haven’t played it yet, snap it up immediately on that platform.

If you’re a console player, you should be aware that a little control wonkiness and some extra, unnecessary difficulty await you.

That said, those problems shouldn’t be enough to scare you away from a tremendous RPG. Even with its faults, Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition offers the best console co-op RPG action this side of Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance II.

The rating for this review will come when I’m done with the story, but the gameplay alone will earn a very high score.

God is a Geek, 8.5

The Enhanced Edition comes with 80,000 lines of spoken dialogue, most of it very well-delivered. Because of this, there’s a vein of black comedy running through Original Sin that often had me chuckling. The musical score is excellent, too, which does wonders for the atmosphere. Character models are bright and highly detailed, while the world is colourful and vibrant, closer in style to Torchlight than Diablo. It’s an engaging and inviting world, only really hamstrung by its unwillingness to hold your hand or offer real guidance.

Thanks to the release of Wasteland 2, Divinity: Original Sin is not quite unique on PS4, but not much comes close. A sprawling, exciting adventure that makes you work for your rewards, Larian’s tactical RPG has tonnes to offer fans of the genre, though newcomers may struggle to get to grips with its more complex systems.

Playstation Lifestyle, 9

If there is one real knock against Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition it’s that the game has way too many difficulty spikes. Players will have to learn to save often, as wandering into the wrong part of a map, or stepping on a trap, can wipe away hours of progress in an instant. Players will have to play cautiously, and save often, if they wish to get through Larian Studios’ excellent RPG.

Ultimately, playing Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition on consoles is a fantastic experience. It may not be the best way to play, as PC still reigns supreme, but it’s a fantastic version of an already great game. If you’re willing to roll the die, and have luck decide your fate, then you’ll have a blast playing through Larian Studios’ update of Divinity: Original Sin.

Original Sin EE - Review @ IGN

by Hiddenx, 08:07

Today is the release day of Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition. IGN has reviewed the game already:

Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition Review

Old-school, pen-and-paper roleplaying from the comfort of your couch.

When IGN reviewed Divinity: Original Sin on PC last year, we gave it a 9 for “Amazing.” Here’s what we had to say:

"Divinity: Original Sin is one of the most rewarding RPGs to come along in years. Its quests and combat compelled me to think hard about my actions and choices, which is more than I usually get to say about contemporary RPGs. Its depth, personality, and combat challenges easily allow it to hold its own against the likes of heavyweights like Dragon Age: Origins."

It was difficult to imagine Original Sin’s old-school complexity working on consoles (read our full review for Divinity: Original Sin for complete details), but Enhanced Edition successfully makes it happen without any sacrifices. Though the same inventory criticisms apply, the highly interactive world of Rivellon and the finely detailed RPG systems therein are completely intact.

[...]

New Pages in the Spellbook

In terms of new content, the biggest addition is the full voicing of pretty much every NPC, which adds a layer of immersion to a world that was already very well-realized. New areas and skills have been added too, and while they’re appreciated, Divinity is already so large and exhaustive these feel more like cherries on top as opposed to a whole new scoop. For instance, the addition of dual wielding as a combat style helps make off-hand weapons more viable, but it isn't exactly a reason to replay if you've already sunk 100 hours into the original.

[...]

The Verdict

If you want the RPG with the most skills, the most stats to consider, and a world that constantly makes meaningful use of every line on your character sheet, there’s nothing else quite like Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition. You can find RPGs that are prettier, more accessible, or less busy, but very few are as dedicated to the true spirit of role-playing as this one is.

Score: 9.0 Amazing

Enhanced Edition brings all the depth and character of Divinity: Original Sin to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
  • + Gamepad controls mapping
  • + Unmatched RPG depth
  • + Split-screen co-op
  • + Fully voiced NPCs
  • - Lots of inventory management

Original Sin EE - Countdown

by Myrthos, 16:57

Just a few days until the release of Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition. In an idential update on both the Original Sin and Original Sin 2 Kickstarter pages we learn about the differences between the original and Enhanced Edition:

loading...

Their thunderclap campaign:

Divinity: Original Sin - Enhanced Edition is arriving in just 6 days, and we're trying to spread the news.

For maximum effect, we've started a Thunderclap Campaign: It's a bit like Kickstarter for social media. We need 200 people to join us and share their voices about the Enhanced Edition. If we get over 200 volunteers then, on October 27th, Thunderclap will blast out timed Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr posts from all of our volunteers, creating one unified tsunami of social media noise.

Help us out and please add your voice to our Thunderclap campaign here! The more people we get playing Divinity: Original Sin - Enhanced Edition, the better and richer our community will be!

How you can get the Enhanced Edition:

If you have Divinity: Original Sin already, then an extra entry (Divinity: Original Sin- Enhanced Edition) will appear in your Steam or GOG libraries. The Enhanced Edition will be listed in addition to the original game, so you can play both. Everyone who bought Divinity: Original Sin on Steam or GOG (and anyone who got a Steam/GOG key from a retail box or Humble Bundle) will get the Enhanced Edition for free.

If you want to get Divinity: Original Sin - Enhanced Edition on console, you can pre-order for PS4 and Xbox One here.

The languages that are supported:

Divinity: Original Sin - Enhanced Edition supports all the languages of the original version: English, French, Italian, German, Russian, and Polish. And we’ve added Spanish support too! In addition, we’d like to thank our community in the Czech Republic for localising the game into Czech for the PC version - díky

And that Linux and Mac versions are coming at some point in time:

Divinity: Original Sin - Enhanced Edition will be out on PC, PS4 and Xbox One on October 27. Mac and Linux will be right on their tail, arriving at the beginning of December as we finalise the ports. We know it's been quite a wait, but it'll be worth it!

"To Whom It May Concern (preferably an imp),

Original Sin EE - Coop Trailer

by Myrthos, 18:11

Focus Home released the console coop trailer today (which offers the same functionality on PC) for Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition.

Divinity: Original Sin - Enhanced Edition: Everything about its online & split-screen cooperative mode on console, in a new trailer!

In a first for current generation consoles, Divinity: Original Sin is bringing splitscreen and online co‑op to RPGs. Larian Studios' multi-award winner RPG (over 150 awards and nominations) RPG unveils all about its cooperative mode with the Co‑op Trailer of its Enhanced Edition, which is planned for release on PlayStation®4 and Xbox One® consoles next month. This new video accompanies the opening of the official website, on which you'll find all relevant information about Divinity: Original Sin - Enhanced Edition!

Explore a deceitfully vibrant world on your own or with a friend, together or independently in the same playthrough. When venturing together, you'll share the same screen-space (with console-comfortable controls and UI!), but move apart when playing locally, and the screen dynamically and seamlessly splits allowing you to explore the entire world apart, without loadings.

Cooperative play adds a whole new dimension to Divinity Original Sin; from the turn-based battles giving prominence to teamplay, to quest resolution, exploration, dialogues, and the critical choices that will shape your adventure. Should you kill the Orc, or the Elf? Or none? Or maybe both? There's always multiple solutions to any given problem in Divinity: Original Sin, and it's up to you - and your friend, when you play in co‑op - to decide how to progress in your epic adventure. Of course, dissension may arise from time to time... don't panic! Divinity: Original Sin incorporates an innovative game mechanic, inspired by a real-life ancestral problem solving remedy... rock-paper-scissors!

For more information about the game, head toward the official website of Divinity Original Sin - Enhanced Edition, which opens its doors today! The website contains every bit of information you want to know about the game and the new features of the Enhanced Edition.

Divinity Original Sin - Enhanced Edition will release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC in October.

RPGWatch Feature - Divinity: Original Sin EE Gamescom Preview

by Myrthos, 23:52

If there is one stop I always make when visiting Gamescom is to visit Larian Studios (when they are there). This time Divinity Original Sin Enhanced Edition was presented on the show by Swen and Thomas using a demo in which they tried to show all the additions and changes in the short time available.

Divinity: Original Sin was released over a year ago. The game received quite a lot of credits and I suppose sold rather well as Larian Studios decided that they would overhaul the game to make it an even better experience. And they do not only bring this new experience to PC players (those who have the original game get this enhanced edition for free), but also to PS4 and Xbox One. To make it possible to use the game on these consoles quite some changes to the user interaction were needed. However PC players do not need to be alarmed, as long as you do not have a controller plugged into your PC you will be presented an interface for usage with a keyboard and mouse with a familiar look to those who have played the original. But also the PC user interface has been improved to make some of the new features possible. Swen states that the new controller interface works so well that at Larian Studios offices the team generally prefers to play the game with a controller on their PC instead of a keyboard and mouse.

Original Sin EE - October Release Date

by Myrthos, 16:39

Swen told GameReactor that the release date of Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition is scheduled for October and that it is the first release date they probably won't miss.

"Currently we're targeting end of October [for release], says Vincke. It's already very far advanced, all the content is there, all the voice recordings are finally finished took us six months."

Hitting the release date "would be a first for Larian" said Vincke, but he clearly didn't want to jinx it adding "we'll see" at the end.

Original Sin EE - Previews

by Myrthos, 12:49

Gamespot have a video in which Swen and Farhang are interviewed while playing Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition.

The Koalition checked out the game as well.

In the original game, skill progression took a dive after level 12/13. Rebalancing has taken place, keeping players engaged instead of things somewhat stalling until late game. A few other updates, a couple subtle and one not so much, will make things a bit easier and also show that the community has been heard. Previously, turn order was a bit convoluted but now it’ll be on the top of the HUD. You can also examine enemies weaknesses and strengths if your character’s intelligence is high enough. Additionally, dual wielding had been requested many times and is now coming in the enhanced editions. All one-handed weapons will be dual wield eligible.

On top of all this, two new unique characters are added to the campaign and the game will now be fully voiced. Originally, only scarce points of dialogue had accompanying audio. Now, over 88,000 lines have been added to add value to the role-playing experience. The writing for the game was already a strong point and some solid voice acting will be bringing the clever banter right on home.

Original Sin EE - Porting Done Right

by Myrthos, 12:28

HardcoreGamer feels that the way Larian Studios is porting Divinity Original Sin to the console is how it should be done.

Overall, despite the learning curve and arguable setbacks their uncompromising console port entails, Larian Studios has done a great job so far bringing a classical PC-style RPG to the console. In fact, after my time with the game, I would say I almost prefer playing with a controller. Sure, some things get longer to navigate to but when it works, it works well. Many controls are still up in the air too, so some problem controls may not be set in stone just yet. Touting much more content and a new ending, Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition is looking great and better in nearly all ways than the original. I look forward to sinking just as much time, if not more, into it as I did with the old version when Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition comes out for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC/Mac/Linux later this year.

Original Sin EE - Kickstarter Update #69

by Hiddenx, 20:54

Kickstarter update #69:

Larian At E3 & Larian At Home! Bard’s Tale IV & Umbra shoutout!

Ready for E3?
E3 is just around the corner, and we have some big questions to answer. Can we bring an RPG to the console? Can we recreate the same fantastic Original Sin experience if you're relaxing in your living room, holding a controller? Will it still feel as natural as a mouse and keyboard?
Ever since Divinity: Original Sin launched, we've been working hard on the Enhanced Edition to ensure that playing on a console feels as smooth and intuitive as it does on a PC. On top of that, we’ve also been adding plenty of content such as new quests, new puzzles, voices for every character, and a host of other improvements.
Now we're ready to share the results with the world.

You can see the Enhanced Edition in action on the Twitch E3 Show (Monday 15th), or you can drop by the Game Trailers show on Tuesday, the IGN show on Wednesday - to hear every detail about the fantastic new features that the Enhanced Edition brings to Original Sin!

And if you're a member of the media, or an established Youtuber/Twitch streamer, we still have some free time slots to let you experience the Enhanced Edition for yourself! Journalists should contact Tom Ohle of EvolvePR (tom@evolve-pr.com) to book a slot.

We’ll be sharing a lot of Divinity:Original Sin Enhanced Edition news at E3, so if you want to be sure you don’t miss out on anything, follow us on Twitter and Facebook. Rumor has it that images will be released of the behind-the-scenes bacchanal parties at the Larian house!

Can You Travel To Ghent, Belgium?
We only announced Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition a few weeks ago, but we’ve already been inundated with requests from Source Hunters anxious to play right now. And we want to make that happen. So, we’re delighted to invite a few brave testers to our HQ in Ghent, Belgium, to grapple with the game. If you can travel here, we’d love you to come over and try out new our gameplay modes, rewritten story, and brand new quests!

- We will start public playtesting in our Ghent office on the morning of June 29th, and will carry on until July 10th.
- Interested? Just mail playtesting@larian.com with your name, age (18+ only), email address and previous experience with Divinity: Original Sin for a chance to see the Enhanced Edition before anyone else!

- Players must be available for one full day between June 29th and July 10th.

- Players are required to be in the office for a full day, arriving at 10:00 and leaving at 16:00.

- All testing will take place using console controllers.

 A cRPG Bonanza!

June 2nd saw the launch of The Bard’s Tale IV: the latest inXile Kickstarter campaign, which follows on from the immensely successful Wasteland 2 and Torment: Tides of Numenera. A cRPG dungeon crawler that promises dynamic combat, knotty puzzles and fiendish riddles, all set to a gorgeous Gaelic musical accompaniment? Yes please! It’s close to being funded, so why not head over to their Kickstarter page and see if they can tempt you to break open your piggy-banks? Do check out their hot in-engine video too!

But it’s not just Bards and celtic tunes; we wouldn’t be Larian if we weren’t excited by the promise of broken worlds and apocalyptic creatures! Umbra is another isometric cRPG that’s caught our eye, promising fast-paced action, frantic magic, and hordes of enemies to vanquish. With an open world to explore, a crafting system that lets you create unique weapons, and a chance to turn your character into a highly customisable Apocalyptic avatar, we definitely think this is one to watch. You’d better hurry though, their Kickstarter campaign ends in just a few days!

Original Sin EE - Interview @RPS

by Gorath, 23:13

Rock, Paper, Shotgun published an interesting interview with Swen Vincke. They talk about many other things besides the Original Sin Enhanced Edition.

RPS: That’s something that naturally fits with RPGs as a genre. How difficult is it to blend that systemic freedom with a strong narrative though? When I talk to people about Original Sin, we spend more time discussing the mechanics than the characters and events. That’s pretty much the opposite of a Dragon Age conversation.

Vincke: I think that is something we can definitely improve. In Enhanced Edition you’ll find that it’s already better – that was one of the focal points of the work we did there. To strengthen story, put more lore in the background, improve motivation for some characters, including player characters. These are things we could maybe have applied originally but didn’t manage to. Now we have.

There’s still a long road that we can take there and that’s where we’ll be concentrating for the next game. We had two writers for Original Sin and we have seven now. There’s probably an eighth writer coming in which shows where our focus has shifted. A lot of the hires have been made to strengthen our storytelling and worldbuilding.

Original Sin EE - Only English Voice Acting

by Gorath, 23:07

Gamestar.de talked to Larian's Swen Vincke after today's announcement and compiled a short article out of his answers. The most important piece of info (transl.) :

Each dialog will be voice acted, only in English however. Many dialogs have been reworked.

Original Sin - Enhanced Edition Announced

by Myrthos, 12:32

Larian Studios just announced that an Enhanced Edition of Divinity Original Sin is coming our way for PS4, X box One, PC, Mac, Linux and SteamOS.

This isn't just some patch or minor content update to the game you all know and (hopefully) love; it's a whole new experience! With controller support, local co-op with split screen, fully voiced characters, a totally reworked story (with a brand new ending), and much more, we're very proud to finally be able to share what we've crafted here at Larian.

In the update video below, Swen reveals a little more about the fantastic new features you can look forward to in Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition.

loading...

As well as local co-op, split screen and controller support, the Enhanced Edition also features:

  • All characters are now fully voiced by AAA-voice actors
  • New quests, new characters, and new content
  • Entirely new gameplay modes and character builds
  • A heavily rewritten story with a brand new ending
  • Massively reworked visuals and sound effects
  • And much more to be announced in the coming months!

The Enhanced Edition will be free to all who already own Original Sin. Note however that the Enhanced Edition is a different game. It is not an update. The story has been rewritten heavily, which results in save games not being transferable between the two games.
