Gauntlet - Review Roundup #3

by Couchpotato, 03:14

Here is the last round of reviews on the internet I will posting for Gauntlet this month.

IncGamers - 8/10

When I first started playing Gauntlet I was in two minds as to whether it would keep me hooked, but I have to concede that I’m now thoroughly enjoying the game. If you love ARPGs and all the character customisation guff that comes with them then Gauntlet is (despite appearances) not really a game for you

RPGamer - 2.5/5

Aside from the lack of story and choice of four character classes, the developer's main attempt for this to feel like a Gauntlet game comes in creating situations where co-op players, most likely strangers on Steam, can annoy and troll.

Escapist Magazine - 3.5/5

Arrowhead made a very true-to-source Gauntlet game, no doubt, but the source is 30 years old, and could use some modern accouterments. Gauntlet is as much fun as it has ever been, but it'll get old fast for those who still remember slogging through the original.

ZTGD - 7/10

Gauntlet isn’t much of a thinking man’s game. Find a class you like and have at it. The Wizard will be the one most people avoid, but even then, with a few other buddies along for the ride, it can be a rather fun time. Single player can get a bit more monotonous, but it is the same for the multiplayer; just having some others to share in the mindless action helps out a lot.

Gauntlet - Review Roundup #2

by Couchpotato, 04:30

Here is the second  batch of reviews this week for the just released Gauntlet Remake.

Eurogamer - 6/10

Sadly, the biggest problem with this whole package may be that Arrowhead has already made a truly great Gauntlet tribute anyway, and it was Magicka. There was a game with the freedom to choose its own first principles, while still having Gauntlet's mean-spirited playfulness baked into it. The difference, I suspect, is between being creatively inspired by the spirit and ethos of a legendary design, and being cast as a kind of well-intentioned caretaker.

Game Trailers - 7.9/10

Gauntlet is an accessible co-op dungeon crawler that's at its best with a group of friends. It may be on the shorter side, but while it lasts it's an unpredictable and memorable experience. Hopefully this is only the first of many steps into the perilous Gauntlet.

Arcade Sushi - 7.5/10

If you want an old-school adventure that will let you hack, slash and steal stuff from your buddies, Gauntlet’s for you. The dungeons may be a bit repetitive and could have more variety, but the fun is there.

Gameinformer - 7/10

There’s definitely a charming old-school spark to this reboot, but without anything beyond the constant monster mashing and levels that seem to blend together, you may find yourself needing excitement badly.

CGM - 7/10

The thing is that, this could be a fun arcade-style homage to the original game and a worthy game in its own right, but its lack of variation kills it. Difficulty increases mean more gold and those with achievement fever might want to collect all the items, cosmetic pieces, and special goals, but they’d have to grind over the same levels to do it.

Gauntlet - Review Roundup

by Couchpotato, 12:27

I found a new batch of reviews this week for the just released Gauntlet HD Remake. The journalist seem to love it, but I found the game to be average at best.

Hardcoregamer - 4.5/5

Gauntlet delivers a fun and challenging dungeon crawling experience that manages to avoid repetitiveness. Although it has some minor launch bugs to work through, they are easily overlooked. The best way to think of the Gauntlet series before this reboot was as an old muscle car. It provided great years with its powerful, uncomplicated nature, but it was little more than a rusty clunker. Much like a jalopy can become a classic, Arrrowhead has beautifully restored Gauntlet to its former glory and made it something you’ll be proud to take a spin in. Ride on, Gauntlet fans.

Invision Community - 4/5

Gauntlet presents players with the ultimate tease; playing alone in a team of four players. Sure, going solo and trying to beat out your teammates will have you getting your hands on the best loot and the most gold, but in a game which has you against waves and waves of enemies, co-operation does not sound so bad does it? One could also just play alone and save himself the hassle of deciding whether to be a good sport or a greedy bastard. Ultimately, like any other game, making it to the end is its real task and accompanied or alone, it will still feel as satisfying as ever.

Brilliantly Epic - No Score

Overall I’d say Gauntlet is a great game that’s simple enough for anyone to jump into and enjoy for several hours even on their own. If you are going to get it on your own I think you should personally try and wait until a deal as £15 although reasonable, you might not get the most out of if your sat their by yourself, however if you do have 1 or 2 mates who are willing to buy it as well (just show them this article it’ll convince them, I swear!) then the asking price is totally justified and definitely worth it.

Mousenjoypad  -  80/100

Overall, even though Gauntlet’s score defaults to 80, I’d boost the numbers closer to 90 if you enjoy games such as this. It’s a badass COOP hack ‘n’ slash that will surely gain a cult following as time goes by, especially since Arrowhead promised updates and additional content in the upcoming weeks and months. A hearty recommendation from me.

Gauntlet - Review @ Shack News

by Couchpotato, 02:20

Shack News reviewed the recently released Gauntlet, and gave the game a 8/10. They say it's due to being the perfect party game. Here is the final conclusion of the review.

Gauntlet is the perfect party game. It brings people together while tearing them apart. There's fast action that's easy to pick up for more casual players, and a decent selection of relics for players that want to make to experiment with ways to make their character an unstoppable loot grabbing killing machine. The online component could do use some improvement, specifically with the ability to rejoin an ongoing game. Although it isn't as deep as other action role-playing games out there, its simplicity is a big part of its charm. It is the kind of game I find myself trying to talk my friends into playing so that we can confront the hordes, battle giant bosses, and fight over gold.

Gauntlet - Now Available on Steam

by Couchpotato, 01:40

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announces that Gauntlet is now available for purchase , and download on Steam. Here is the new video, and more information.

“This new digital version of Gauntlet innovates on past titles while staying true to the brand’s legendary four-player format,” said David Haddad, Executive Vice President, Publishing Operations, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. “Multiplayer gameplay is at the core of Gauntlet’s appeal and now gamers have the option to play with friends and family locally and online.”

Players select from four classic fantasy-based characters: Warrior, Wizard, Valkyrie, or Elf.  Each character has its own distinctive play style and unique strengths and weaknesses.  Upon selecting a playable character, the gameplay is set within dungeons where the object is to fight through the chambers slaying evil creatures and completing challenges.  An assortment of special items can be located in each dungeon that can restore the player’s health, unlock doors, and shift the odds in the player’s favor with magical relics which can aid the player in surviving longer in the Gauntlet. The enemies are a vast assortment of fantasy-based monsters, including ghosts, grunts, demons, spiders, sorcerers and skeleton warriors.

Players can improve their heroes’ abilities and powers by unlocking achievements called “perks.” Multiple difficulty settings add to the game’s replayability.

“The Gauntlet franchise has always been a great source of inspiration to us and we’re extremely proud to work with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment to bring back this classic,” said Johan Pilestedt, CEO of Arrowhead Game Studios.  “We wanted to create a Gauntlet that was true to the original, with updated visuals and a feature set that resonates with what the original game could have been, had it not been for the technical limitations at the time.”

Gauntlet consists of environments like dusty crypts, dark caves, and fiery dungeons, each with varying styles of gameplay. Some dungeon maps allow players to explore and fight their way through chambers slaying evil creatures, completing challenges and discovering hidden secrets and gold.  In other levels, Death itself chases players through an unpredictable labyrinth. There are also endurance maps where players must defeat waves of monsters to survive.

Gauntlet is rated PEGI 16 for Violence, Blood and Gore, with a setting to disable the game’s gore.

Gauntlet - New Preview Roundup

by Couchpotato, 04:29

I found a few more previews for the new remasted Gauntlet game this week.

Analog Addiction

Gauntlet has always been a more enjoyable franchise with friends, but it has never felt as apparent as it did while playing this early access title. My experience with past titles in the series has been a hybrid of single player and co-op, with both being equally enjoyable experiences. This time around, playing the title solo felt intimidating and was not nearly as enjoyable as it had been in the past (although it did make escaping from Death significantly easier). In order to truly enjoy Gauntlet, it seems you will need to get a group of friends together to tackle the dungeons.

Stevivor

In conclusion this is a enjoyable and addictive arcade dungeon crawler which, I feel, will have a short lifespan. It felt a lot more straight forward and simplistic than the original and I hope the final 8 chapters introduce the varied routes and tough decisions of the original. That said, it's debuting at just $20 so, if you want a decent co-operative game, this is definitely one to keep your eye on.

Gamecloud

In comparison to other Gauntlet games, this one will be quite short. The first act makes up one-third of the entire game, which only took me two hours to complete on the normal difficulty. Having said that, if the preview is anything to go by then it’ll be a solid contribution to the series. Its few foibles can be easily forgiven, since they’re not exactly game-breaking and seem almost insignificant compared to how much the game got right. The focus on gameplay over character management should make for some great multiplayer experiences; with the addition of online play, as well, it will make organising 4-player Gauntlet games much easier. It’ll be better too, because I love Gauntlet (this version included) and I love playing it with friends, but Gauntlet should be played for hours on end and people start to smell by that point.

Gauntlet - More E3 Previews

by Couchpotato, 04:25

I found two more previews this week based on a demo of Gauntlet from E3.

RPGFan

I felt like I was watching a new paintjob on a very old concept. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but there wasn't anything truly new or exciting about Gauntlet. It's just Gauntlet. I kept waiting to see something that screamed creativity or at least held my attention above watching axes fly across the screen. There's still a chance that environmental interaction or more complicated bosses lay in wait for would-be adventurers, but for now it would appear that Gauntlet is going to be a fun nostalgic trip for some and a small download experience for others. Here's hoping there's a bit more meat on this particular chicken leg that will come to light upon release.

Gaming Lives

This is probably one of the best remakes I have ever come across in any medium. The guys and gals at Arrowhead must really have loved the original Gauntlet as they have recreated it with a spectacular modern feeling, yet maintained all of the elements that made Gauntlet such a hit back in 1985. I doff my metaphorical hat to them, and thank them wholeheartedly for treating this beloved friend so very gently. They have maintained the very soul of the original Atari classic and that is a rare thing in these modern times. And with that, this elf needs food… badly.

Gauntlet - Preview @ Gamespot

by Couchpotato, 04:33

Gamespot had a chance to play Gauntlet at E3 , and decided to write a new preview.

Like the Gauntlet of old, the demo for this update was much more fun sitting on a couch with friends and competing for health, enemy kills, and gold (even though the money I collected went into a shared pot). But the variety of abilities and combat combos made playing through the small segment of gameplay fun, and the enemy assortment ensured that combat required thought, not just mindless button-mashing.

Gauntlet - Preview @ Eurogamer

by Couchpotato, 05:33

Eurogamer posted a short preview for the new Gauntlet based on a short demo they plated from the games developer Arrowhead Studios.

It's astonishing to play the new Gauntlet and see how wordlessly a team learns to operate together, sending out a few treasure collectors while others shoot from a distance. Beyond that, keys and locks and spawners return. There are never enough keys for all the locks, making for tricky choices, and there's always someone who forgets to head straight for the spawner and lets the room fill with monsters. Sorry about that.

All of this is great, and it's nice to see that Arrowhead's still really working to nail the details - the argument du jour revolves around how friendly fire should work, with the current solution suggesting it should only be turned on for Relics, equippable weapons that you pick up in the dungeons. As far as I'm concerned, though, the thing that makes Gauntlet such an exciting prospect now is the thing that made it such an exciting prospect back in the 1980s: Arrowhead has nailed the skeletal crunch of combat - that magical moment at which blade meets baddie and you feel amazing. This is the heart of Gauntlet. Good to have it back again.

Gauntlet - Preview Roundup

by Couchpotato, 05:00

Here are a few more previews I found this week for the new Gauntlet HD Remake.

Game Revolution

Gauntlet isn't a hard sell, with the love for the action franchise extending back to 1998's Gauntlet Legends, all the way to the coin-op 1985 original that pioneered the use of different classes in a local multiplayer game. Arrowhead's contemporary remake, exclusive to the PC, uses that 1985 game as its guiding light, following some early experimentation. Axel Lindberg, the game's director said what the game is should be immediately clear from just a screenshot .

Digital Trends

Gauntlet isn’t an exact recreation of the original arcade game, nor does it intend to be. It does, however, build off of the beloved original, highlighting the best of the dungeon-crawling classic and reimagining it with the benefit of modern technology. Even if you never played the original, there’s a reason its legacy continues, and the new take on it seems to honor that legacy well.

Destructoid

That's Gauntlet. It may seem incredibly pared-down now, but these are the conventions from the 1985 classic. The remake's set to have a 2014-graphical aesthetic to it, but it's a lot of the same. However, the game isn't a true recreation; it's more Arrowhead's ideal take on it. So, while the content may feel sort of new, nothing's ever really that fresh with Gauntlet. And that's probably just the way that fans would want it.

Gauntlet - Preview @ GameReactor

by Couchpotato, 04:53

GameReactor is the next site to write a preview of the new Gauntlet HD based on an early demo of the game, and a talk with Game Director Axel Lindberg.

The demo we play is specifically tuned for journalists we're told. It's one of those subtle insults we've learned to live with, taking it in our stride. It's rather easy, and nowhere near as challenging as the proper game. And a Gauntlet game needs to be challenging. Arrowhead knows this and while there are plans for different difficulty settings - the idea is that accomplishing something in Gauntlet should mean something. With great ass tingling comes a great sense of accomplishment, if all ends well.

One great design challenge that presented itself was how to build a game that worked both for the solo player and multiplayer, as drop-in/drop-out was a feature that felt core to the experience. And while it's easy to adjust the number of pressure plates players need to stand on, it's harder to design a level where you have to carry an object from one end of the level to another for both a single player and for a team of four where three players can cover the one carrying the object. They're still toying around with a solution for this problem, and we suggested adding legs to the object if there's only one player. Remains to be seen if that's a solution that will make it into the final game.

We were only shown a small slice of the game with no real way of measuring the scope of the game. We imagine that given the arcade heritage, a session/playthrough isn't necessarily all that long. A sequence of adventure/puzzle levels, procedural levels and boss levels that you can play through with a few friends in an evening or perhaps two. Regardless of this the team is still designing and experimenting with new ideas and with a release pencilled in for this summer, it may seem like things should be locked down more.

Gauntlet - Hands-On Preview @ Ausgamers

by Couchpotato, 05:18

Ausgamers had the chance to play the new Gauntlet HD at GDC 2014, and decided to share their opinion of the game in a new hands-on preview.

Gauntlet is coming back for another go, this time courtesy of publisher Warner Bros and Swedish indie studio Arrowhead with a currently PC exclusive title for both Windows and SteamOS.  At the recent GDC expo in San Francisco, AusGamers man on the ground, Nathan Lawrence had a chance to go hands-on with some couch co-op multiplayer and came away reasonably impressed:

Gauntlet - Preview @ Shack News

by Couchpotato, 06:16

Shack News has posted a preview of Arrowheads modern day HD remake of Gauntlet.

Fans of the original will be familiar with Arrowhead's update. Like in Magicka, the game balances co-op and competitive play, requiring workmanship to defeat the enemy forces, while encouraging roughhousing when fighting for food. For the demo, friendly fire was turned off, but the producer informed us that the final game would have the option to turn it on--something that's likely to lead to some unintentionally hilarious moments.

Along with the atmospheric lighting and level design, the update also adds boss battles that will test your team to its limits. At the conclusion of the demo, a large mummy-like figure arose from his throne, yelling out vigorously before the screen faded to black.

While Gauntlet would be a good fit for consoles, it's currently a PC-only release. By keeping true to its original design, the Gauntlet demo was an entertaining good-hearted dungeon crawl. Well, good-hearted until someone shoots the steak dinner.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced today they will be releasing a modernized action RPG version of Gauntlet this summer on Steam for PC.

Reboot of Arcade Classic Is Lead Game in “WB Games Vault” Made-for-Digital Portfolio

— Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment today announced Gauntlet, a completely modernized action RPG version of the celebrated dungeon crawler, will be available this summer via Steam for PC, offering full support for SteamOS and the upcoming Steam Machines shipping the second half of this year. The game will lead the launch of WB Games Vault, a direct-to-digital portfolio that will deliver paid games based on popular Warner Bros. and Midway brands, plus original IP, across multiple digital networks.

“With Gauntlet we combined the arcade style of the original game with an entirely new look and feature set that includes emergent, local and online four-player gameplay,” said David Haddad, Senior Vice President, Digital Games, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. “Gauntlet will be the first title in the WB Games Vault portfolio, which will provide us with an opportunity to access emerging talent within the game development community and match unique skills and experience with our extensive library of properties.”

Distinctive play styles, procedural dungeons and an impressive art style keep the gameplay fresh.

“To us at Arrowhead, Gauntlet is one of the most defining games from our childhoods, and it’s amazing to be able to work with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment on a brand new version,” said Johan Pilestedt, CEO of Arrowhead Game Studios. “Gauntlet is one of the original and best known video game properties and we are looking forward to creating a fresh, yet true to the original, take on a multiplayer masterpiece.”
